Big and bold, VANNI’s collection of sunglasses for the new season continues to surprise with a touch of VANNIty: check them out and try them on for size.

The brand famous for its exclusive acetates and unequivocal style has decided to play with fire and launch a very idiosyncratic collection, setting alight our unique designs with the famous acetates.

VANNI’s rebel soul comes alive in the new RASTER collection flaunting large shapes and acetates available in 5 colour variations. The layering of different patterns has driven the design of this collection: edgy and original.

Shapes are ultra feminine, large ephemeral butterflies that make their presence felt, or chunky rectangles edged with sophisticated geometric detail.

It isn’t officially a world capital but it will be, if

only for a year. The destination of our World

Tour is the Italian city of Matera, which has

been selected from over 21 other Italian cities

to become “European City of Culture 2019”.

We have chosen to dedicate our VANNI

magazine in this incredible small city because

we believe it really is an extraordinary place

that deserves a visit and evokes a strong

emotional response.

Imagine arriving in Bari by train or plane and

then renting a car or taking a bus to Matera,

travelling through the heart of Basilicata until

recently not on the tourist map. Suddenly

the landscape opens up to reveal a breath-

taking collection of cave dwellings carved

into the rock face. To one side, this stone

age community perched on the edge of

a precipitous cliff, to the other, the green

and sloping Mediterranean landscape of

the Murgia plateau. Hundreds of houses

gouged out of the limestone, some humble,

some with impressive 15th and 16th century

facades. The boulders or “sassi” demark

certain boundaries and neighbourhoods of

this unique town that has been and continues

to be inhabited by human beings since the

stone age.

As we arrived in the city at 11pm and took in the

spectacle of this incredible primitive city we

were lost for words. It was like travelling back

in time with its silent and empty streets and

the soft glow of the lanterns in the moonlight

creating a biblical setting perfumed by wild

thyme.

To experience the city is to get lost in its streets

after to listening to its incredible history that

has had moments of both illumination and

darkness: from stories of medieval splendour

to its total disgrace in the 1950s due to

appalling living conditions and then to its

rebirth as a Unesco World Heritage Site, and

now as European Capital of Culture.

Some brief travel tips.

A good starting point is the casa Noha of FAI, (http://www.visitfai.it/casanoha/) a fully

immersive high tech and cultural experience

that uses rare documents to tell the story of

the reconstruction of the city from different

perspectives: architecture, art, archaeology

and cinema history. Explore the Sasso Baresano and Caveoso, (amazing view

from the San Pietro Church) and the heart of

the Civita with its magnificent Cathedral. A

must the cliffside churches, chiese rupestri, (above all Santa Maria di Idris) gouged from

the rocks and adorned with cave paintings.

The Cisterna del Palombaro takes you

back in time and demonstrates the ingenious

solutions that local inhabitants used to combat

constant water shortages. Also worth doing is

dedicating half to day to exploring the valley

of the Murgia plateau and dare to take the

Tibetan bridge that crosses the Gravina river.

There is a huge selection of accommodation,

hotels and B&Bs in the cave dwellings to suit

all budgets. For real luxury and life experience

try the Sextantio (www.sextantio.it), individual

sumptuous cave dwellings. Also the hotel Corte San Pietro (www.cortesanpientro.it)

and Le Monacelle (www.lemonacelle.com),

simple and clean but in a breath-taking

location.

Take an aperitivo at the Ridola Caffè in Via Ridola and watch the evening promenade

or have an artisanal ice-cream at “I Vizi degli

Angeli”. Try the delicious sandwichs at “da

Arturo” in Piazza del Sedile, or stroll down le Beccherie to enjoy local craft shops and

stop for a drink.

For shopping look into “elisa&janna”, in piazza

del Sedile for hand made jewellery and

discover all the new range of VANNI eyewear

in the new optical shop “Smalti e colori” a

short distance from the piazza.

If you want to enjoy Matera from your sofa

at home, the city appears in numerous films:

Pasolini’s 1964 “Vangelo secondo Matteo”

and Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”

among others. Now shooting in Matera is

the new Hollywood production of “Wonder

Woman” where we witnessed, the first

clapperboard and “lights, camera, action”!

The VANNI Magazine has to date taken us to different locations that have a creative story to tell. We have been to the circus, an art fair, a confectionary factory and to Radio Capital in Rome. Our last edition was truly special, printed in tabloid format and immortalizing the 2015 collection of the Turin brand with the spectacular backdrop of the Venaria Reale Palace, the magnificent historical monument at the gates of Turin.Our tradition for the magazine is to involve the people that work everyday in these different locations as models, having fun as they pose for their close-up in VANNI glasses. For 2016 we are taking you, as you may guess, to the European Capital of Culture 2019: Matera, the oldest city in the world, an “underground city”, that has been and continues to be populated by human beings since the Stone Age. Kristina Ti’s dresses for the 2016/2017 Autumn/Winter Season are “OPEN”, inspired by birds in flight, a romantic ultra feminine style. Delicate voluminous fabrics in subtle colours were accompanied by VANNI eyewear, exclusive acetates and metals in white and mother of pearl with a touch of blue and a hint of dangerous black.

GREEN LIGHT FOR THE VANNI YOUNG ART SEASON 2016VANNI and the young art: a season full of events. On 27th May the Autofocus/VANNI Project Space inaugurated the exhibition of Francecso Pergolesi, winning artist of the Autofocus Prize for Photography at The Others in 2015. His work was selected by the panel of judges; Lorenza Bravetta, Mario Calabresi and Roberta Pagani. The exhibition (which includes an installation designed specifically for the space) presents a timeless and nostalgic visual narrative of landscapes and people inextricably linked with the artist’s childhood.Simultaneously we are kicking off the 8th edition of AUTOFOCUS, inviting entries to VANNI’s international competi-tion dedicated to young European artists and creative talent with the support of GAI. This year we are extending the project and doubling the creative categories. As well as our existing awards for best visual art and best performance art, we are adding awards for best video and best photography.Competition entries are welcome in any artistic media, genre or technical application.
