Condition Y our Car for the Holidays E verybody depends on the family car during the big holiday season.

Better have it in top shape. . Thanksg"iving ushers in the season when the car is sore!y needed for

the unending round of activities-dinners, parties, and those import11nt affairs at church or school-for the kias. ·

It 's also the time of year when you'll face more glaring headlights as night traffic increases; when sudden spells of nasty weather g laze highways a nd lower visibility. ·

A n a c ci de n t, of course, can dampen holiday spirits; so can engine trouble. Remember, the· season to be jolly can sour if the family bus balks just before cur

tain time of the ki<!s' play or leaves you stranded in the midst of nowhere after that late party. · Engine neglect is never a bargain, especially when ·a

few dollars òf good service will offset a starting failure or highway breakdown. And winter oil and grease p!us a set of chains in t he t runk are not enough. VVindshield wipers, brakes, carburetor, battery, ignition and spark plugs rate criticai inspection.

Here's a check list for your mechanic-or you, if you're the mechanical type:

Ignition. VVorn parts or faulty adjustment can result in a lot of trouble including hard starting, serious 1oss of power a nd poor f uel consumption. If distributor points are badly p itted, invest in new <1nes a nd install a new condensar t oo before it becomes a weak link in t he system, Remember to check ali wires; crack ed or worn insulation can cause a serious loss o.f voltage.

Spark Plugs. Give- them special attention. Champion Spark Plug engineers r eport that millions ot dollars worth of f uel is wastea annually because seventy per cent of t he nation's cars are r unning with p!ugs t hat need either cleaning or replacing.

If your plugs haven't been serviced in the last 3,000 or 4,000 miles have them cleaned; if you've more than 10,000 ·miles o n them, better replace them. Cleaned or new plugs help restare eng ine zip- a big factor when you need quick power response in an emergency on a hill or traffic pocket.

Battery. Cold weather is tough an it. Failure to hold a charge m ight mean faulty generator adjustment or trouble in the voltage regulator or s tarting motor, Or perhaps your battery is old, t ired and rates retirement.

Brakes. Inspect linings, cylinders, fluid lines or cables for wear, t ear or leaks. Peak efficiency may be r estored with a few minor adjustments but if a shop brake job is needed, don't procrastinate. Good brake_s ·a r e vita! in any season.

Carburetor. T inker not if you're unexperienced. · However, if you have the know- · how, c l ean, check a nd adjust the a utomatic choke and if the carburetor has seen long, hard work, get r id of interior gum and dirt. Don't forget the air cleaner which, if clogged with dirt, can "richen up" the air-fuel mixture a nd foul plugs quickly. Clean i t.

Windshield Wipers. They may work fine in the rain but may slow down to u selessness under extra burdens of ice and snow. Better find out now. Sluggish wipers are really dangerous when bad weath.:' er shrinks visibility.

Perhaps the most valuable win· ter car advice is "slow down."

Don't beat time with the gas pedal when you start a cold engine. Spend a few minutes letting it warm gradually and save future r epair bills.

Hold down your speed after a cold snap a lthough everything seems dry and clear. Under a h ighway over pass may be some unseen sheet ice that could ·mess u p both you and your hoUday plans.

FIRST Series E Bonds begin earning interest after only 6 months. They earn 3% inter· est compounded semiannually when held to maturity. They reach full maturity value earlier (9 years 8 month ) and the inter· est they pay is now bigger at the start.

SECOND Every Series E Bond you own can new go on earning interest for lO more years after it reaches the originai maturity datewithout your lifting a finger!

THIRD During the 10-year e:xtension period, every 4nmatured bond earns a t the new, higher inlere$t rate (average 3% compounded semiannually).

FOURTH H you want to be paid the interest your bonds are earning every six months, or if you want to invest more than the present $20,000 limit .for E Bonds, ask at your bank about the new Series rf, J and K Defense Bonds that pay 2.76% interest!
