Premessa

Bizantino, l’impero Romano e quello Ottomano.

1.1) Sacro Romano Impero in Turchia
L’Impero Romano d’Oriente è conosciuto come l’Impero
Bizantino.

A giugno avevano già

in tribù islamiche.
Costantinopoli, stabilizzando Istanbul come capitale dell’Impero.
commercio in oriente e in molte città europee, come Venezia e
Genova.

flotta Ottomana.

1.4) I Sultani
Erano i
capi militari, politici e sociali.
successore.
Ci sono stati in tutto 36 sultani i quali dominarono l’Impero
Ottomano dal 1299 al 1922.
Essi in ordine cronologico sono stati:
Osman Gazi (1299 – 1326)
Orhan Gazi (1326 – 1360)
Murat I (1360 – 1389)
Yildirim Bayazid I (1389 – 1403)

sultani Ottomani. Nel novembre 1922 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk12,
abolì il sultanato ponendo fine all’Impero Ottomano.

moschee presenti a Istanbul.
realizzò numerose moschee oggi considerate come patrimonio
artistico e culturale della città. Costruì in totale 131 moschee e
altri 200 tipi di edifici.
13 Iznik, città situata all’interno della Turchia.
Adesso vediamo come
richiamare i fedeli.

inglesi, dai francesi, e dagli italiani.
dell’impero Ottomano e i vari territori precedentemente occupati
vennero spartiti.
Terza Repubblica Francese, Unione Sovietica e Stati Uniti),

sottraevano all’ex impero Ottomano circa quattro quinti del suo
territorio.
Questo trattato pose fine definitivamente all’impero
Ottomano.

multinazionali come “McDonald’s”, “Burger King” o “KFC”.

guida di Kemal fossero state minacciate.
funzione anti-sovietica.
dall’altro i comunisti.
vista sociale.
Nel 1984 scoppiò l’insurrezione curda.
I curdi, popolo fiero e combattente, aveva sempre mal

islamico prende sempre più forma all’interno dell’Unione Europea,
causando disordini e paura.
Dinamiche radicali o dinamiche moderate. Movimento sciiti
o movimenti sunniti.

forno o in brodo.
37
• L'Ayran.

(come ultimamente in questi giorni sta accadendo).
senza compromettere i paesi firmatari.
Ogni
migrante proveniente dall’isola Greca verrà registrato, e qualsiasi
richiesta d’aiuto verrà accolta, dovranno invece rimpatriarsi coloro
in parallelo e monitorati congiuntamente su base mensile.

4.1) Relazioni Nato Turchia – Italia
1920 a Sèvres
L’aiuto che Ankara apporta all’interno dell’alleanza
Nordatlantico l'applicazione dell'art. 4 del Trattato di
Washington30. Francia e Germania, insieme a qualche altro Stato
futura adesione turca all'Unione europea potrebbe rappresentare

http://www.liceoitaliano.net

conservatore turco (AKP - Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi; PGS -
tanto a noi!

infra culturale (con i prodotti da esportare o da importare);

5.1) I miei viaggi in Turchia
dell’impero bizantino, poi dell’impero ottomano.
minareti.
L’edificio fu eretto sopra due antiche chiese e inaugurato
dall’imperatore Giustiniano nel 537. Nel XV secolo, gli ottomani la
trasformarono in moschea: minareti, tombe e fontane risalgono a
quel periodo.
celestiale.

49
Nelle sue memorie scrisse:

Roma (i Vespri Efesini dell’88 a.C.).

trionfo a quattro facce.
Memmio e i suoi avi.
Tiberius Celsus Polemaenus, senatore romano e
All’interno vi
Alessandro
Magno restò a bocca aperta guardandolo, oggi possiamo solo
immaginarlo nella sua cornice solitaria e fantasticare.
Pammukale

cospicuo patrimonio culturale, moschee, bazar, caravanserragli e

Introduction
“As long as we do not have the opportunity to better know
Istanbul we do not know anything of ourselves” 36, these are the
words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar37, and this is the starting point for
my thesis.
With its beauty, its history, its culture, Turkey is, in my
opinion, one of the most fascinating place in the world.
I have had the possibility, thanks to the Professor Adriana
Bisirri, to talk about this amazing country, also to demonstrate that
Turkey is not only hate and wars, but it actually hides lots of
priceless secrets, that only a very culturaly passionate person is
capable to look for in a deep way.
My thesis is mainly based on cultural and commercial
relations between Italy and Turkey. Together we can reach a
fundamental balance for huminity’s history.
I am also going to talk about how the Italians had occupied
Istanbul city claiming their homeland in a stranger country. I lived
in Istanbul for six years, thanks to my mother’s work, and I think
that if you do not live in a place you cannot say that you truly know
its history and its culture.
I wish you a pleasent reading.
Size iyi bir okuma diliyorum.

1) The ancient Istanbul
Allure, mythology, legends and much more, this is Istanbul,
a bridge rich in magic and history, divided into two parts, a
European and Asian one.
Over the centuries Istanbul witnessed many changes, has
been the capital of big and very important empires as the
Byzantine Empire, the Roman Empire and the Ottoman one.
From centuries Turkey is considered the historic and
cultural center of many European civilizations. Just think that the
first human settlements date back to 4500 – 3500 B.C.
The first civilization of this amazing place was the tribe of
Megara, a Greek civilization.
Istanbul was founded around the 660 B.C., conquest from
almost every civilization present in the entire world.
In 300 B.C. with a solemn celebration, it has been given
the name Constantinople thanks to his conqueror Constantine.
With this he gave the start of the dominium of the Byzantine
Empire.
Many Catholic churches were built, which were
transformed in mosques after the decline of the empire.
Today Istanbul is a mixture of civilization, a city
characterized by its harmonious and cordial people.

1.1) The Holy Roman Empire in Turkey
The Roman Empire was one of the most important
civilizations in the history of the whole world. It covered almost 3.6
millions square miles.
In the IV century the Empire was divided into two parts:
The Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire,
which collapsed in the V century.
The Eastern Roman Empire was known as the Byzantine
Empire.
After the death of Alexander, the Great in the II century, the
Romans took control over Asia, ruling it for several centuries.
During this domain in Anatolia38, a new religion has
developed the Christianity. In this period Christians were
persecuted, and settled in Antioquia39.
38 Anatolia, Asian side of Turkey. 39 Antioquia is the capital of the province of Hatay, situated in southern Turkey.

1.2) Siege of Vienna of 1683
In the 1529 under the kingdom of Suleyman I, the
Magnificent, Vienna was besieged with the objective of
conquering the city.
From the month of March, the Turkish were preparing an
attack to the capital of the Asburgos (Vienna).
On July 14, the Turkish reached Vienna and they besieged
the great city.
The Viennese bravely defended it, despite their food
provisioning and the ammunitions had become rather scarce. The
Turkish tried then to pierce the Viennese defenses but their efforts
resulted vain because hindered from the barricades erected by
the people.
At the beginning of that same year on March 31st 1683, the
treaty in Warsaw40 was signed.
40 The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance between the countries of the Sovietic Union, born as opposed to NATO, founded in 1949. The treaty stipulated that the members of the alliance promised to defend each other in case of attack. The pact came to an end on March 31, 1991 and was officially dissolved in a meeting in Prague on July 1 of that year.

66
1.3) Ottoman Empire
In VIII and IX century Turkish nomads tribes, converted to
Islamic tribes. They turned into a significant homestead of the
whole Islamic world and built a life based on religion, a central
administration and a tax system.
This dynasty took his name from Osman41, whom in 1299
had established his dominium, expanding his Empire until the
Byzantine territory in Asia, establishing in 1326 Bursa42 as capital
of Turkey.
After the foundation of the Empire, Turkish militaries begun
a constant and significant expansion.
In fact, in 1354 the ottomans advanced until the Strait of
Dardanelles 43
41 Osman was the founder and the first Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He has fought against the Byzantine Empire, ending the internal commerce trade with Byzantium. 42 Bursa is a city of Turkey situated in the asian part of it. 43 The Strait of Dardanelles is a Strait located between Europe and Asia.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
67
With determination they conquered Hadrianopolis44 in
1361. In 1389 the Kosovo battle was fought, and in 1393 they
conquered the Bulgarian Kingdom.
But this continue expansion was blocked in 1402, when in
Ankara they were defeated by the Tartars.
After this defeat they did not recovered their forces until
1453, under the sultanate of Mehmet II 45 when they conquered
Constantinople, putting Istanbul as capital of the Empire.
This dominium lasted until 1923.
In the years 1366, 1396 and 1444, the Christians sent their
crusades against the Muslim to put an end to this continuing
expansion.
In 1456 the Ottomans had occupied Athens and in 1483
Otranto.
Also the capital of Italy, Rome, seemed to be going to fall
into Islamic hands.
Under the sultanate of Suleyman I46 the Ottoman Empire
arrived to his maximum expansion, with the conquest of the
Balkans region. The Ottomans took also control of the commercial
trade in the East and in many European cities, as Venice and
Genoa.
Consequently, this Empire it developed also in political and
economic issues.
44 Hadrianopolis, today’s Edirne, a city situated at the frontiers between Greece and Bulgaria. 45 Mehmet II, Murat II’s son, conquistador of Constantinople. 46 Suleyman I, Selim I’s son, called Suleyman the magnificent. Suleiman was the conquer of new lands, director of immense possessions, innovator in the field of jurisprudence, patron of the arts and poet himself. Suleiman the Magnificent deserved the epithet, given by the major Western sovereigns, for the great works which he did in favor of the state.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
68
In 1571 in Lepanto, the European fleets won against the
Ottoman fleet. From this moment onwards the Europeans began
to win more and more battles against the Turkish. In 1683 a
second attempt of irruption had been made in Vienna. This signed
the decline of the Ottoman Empire.
The sultans were not capable to face all European fleets,
they were not capable to control the economic system, and the
corruption of the military system did not facilitate the recovery.
In 1911 there was a war against Italy, from which in 1912
the Ottomans were constricted to sign a peace treaty, accepting of
giving the Libyan territory to Italy.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855

1.4) Sultans
The sultans were the absolute rulers of all territory. They
were the political, military and social leaders.
At the beginning of the Ottoman Empire, the succession
went from father to son, but after the XVII century, due to an
internal fight among the sons of the sultan Mehmet II, was
established an ordinance that declared that the sultan himself
could decide, before his death, who was to be his successor.
There have been 36 sultans who dominated the Ottoman
Empire from 1299 to 1922.
They were, in chronological order:
Osman Gazi (1299 – 1326)
Orhan Gazi (1326 – 1360)
Murat I (1360 – 1389)
Yildirim Bayazid I (1389 – 1403)

Beyazid II (1481 – 1512)
Yavuz Selim I (1512 – 1520)
Suleyman I – Suleyman the Great (1520 – 1566)

Many of them had made important reforms for the benefit
of the Empire.
The sultan Mehmed Vahdettin was the last of the dynasty
of Ottoman Sultans. In November 1922 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk47,
abolished the sultanate, putting an end at the Ottoman Empire.
47 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and first President of Turkey. Is considered a hero on a national level, until the point of, on the day of his dead, all citizens stop in all the city, interrupting, at the exact time of the dead, all the activities, for a last regard. He established the National Turkish Movement, his brilliant military campaigns had conducted to the liberation of the country and at the foundation of the Turkish Republic. In every school of the nation there is a representation of Atatürk, venerated as a God.

1.5) The Architecture of the mosques
The Ottomans had left their historical importance above all
in the architecture of the mosques. They have built the majority of
mosques present in Istanbul.
The Ottoman architecture is a synthesis of Mediterranean
architecture and the Middle East one; it is characterized by the
presence of almost two minarets on its structure.
The Haci Özbek, one of the first Ottoman mosques, was
composed by only one big worship hall, covered by one
hemispheric cupola, within inside a porch and one minaret.
It was built in 1333 in Iznik48, and subsequently modified
with the addition of big spaces between the columns.
In the following years, the structure of the mosques has
suffered many changes. Often these mosques were transformed
in orthodox churches, as for the example di Haghia Sophia
mosque, which it has been modified many times.
From this point ahead, the architects begun to build
mosques higher than the oldest one, with one cupola and with
wider spaces inside it.
The most famous architect is Koca Mimar Sinan49, whom
has realized many mosques today considered as cultural and
artistic patrimony of the city. He built 131 mosques and 200 other
types of buildings.
48 Iznik, a city situated in the center of Turkey. 49 Koca Mimar Sinan (1489 - 1588), was a Turkish architect, of Greek origins, was a contemporary of Michelangelo and Palladio. For a period of fifty years, he was responsable for the construction or the supervision of all the Ottoman Empire's most important buildings. More than three hundred structures were credited to his name. Member of the imperial court from 1536, he was appointed chief architect of the empire in 1539 by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. He will remain in charge even under the two successors Selim II and Murad III.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
73
1.6) How is made a mosque?
Not all the mosques are the same, of course the historical
influence behind the nation, had compromised many of them.
In all the city of Istanbul five times a day, it spreads a
sound, now coming from the speaker situated at the top of
minarets, calling the faithful to prayer.
There is the impression that the mosque is only a place
where to pray, but is not. Every Friday, all the faithful gather
together at 1 p.m. and after the pray they listen the Khutba, a
speech given by the imam50. This speech is not as the one
present in the catholic religion a preaching on what it has been
read, but it is a speech on the actual political, social and moral
situation of the country. Now let’s see how a mosque is generally
made on its inside.
50 Imam: the spiritual and moral guide of Islam; is obviously also the person who take care of the mosque.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
74
Every mosque has its particularity, there are those with two
minarets, those with big yards, and each of them is characterized
by his decorations.
Inside of the mosques we will not see any human or animal
images, because the Islam forbids them. In fact, we will not see
any statues or figurative frameworks, but on the contrary the
geometrical and abstracted decorations presents on the walls,
offer a spectacular view.
First of all, let’s talk about what is a minaret.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
75
A minaret is the tower situated at the side of the mosques,
from where five times a day, the muezzin51 recites an invitation
song for calling to the faithful.
For tradition one mosque must to have almost one minaret.
The maximum number of minaret that a mosque can have is of
six, as the Blue Mosque52.
The whole function is concentrated in only one big hall with
in its center the “muezzin Mafil”, a typical platform of big mosques.
51 The muezzin is the person uncharged in calling the faithful to prayer. Nowadays is replaced by speakers situated at the top of the minarets. An invitation song is sing for five times a day in Arabic language.
Allāhu Akbar (God is Great) Ašhadu an lā ilāh illā Allāh (I can confirm that there is not any other God out of the
Great God)
Ašhadu anna Mu ammadan Rasūl Allāh (I can affirm that Muhammad was sent for
God’s decision)
ayya ualā al-salāt (Now its time to pray) ayya ualā l-falā (Now its time to announce the liberty)
Allāhu Akbar (God is Great) Lā ilāh illā Allāh (There is not any other God out of the Great God).
52 The Blue Mosque was the first imperial mosque built in Istanbul after the Süleymaniye Mosque, built forty years before. Its name comes from the 21,043 turquoise ceramic tiles in the walls and in the dome. Walls, columns and arches are covered by tiles from Iznik, decorated in tones ranging from blue to green. The Blue Mosque, which dates from the seventeenth century, it is also the only one that can boast six minarets.

In this photo we can see the “mihrab” and the “minbar”.
The “mirhab” is an incision on the wall that indicates La
Mecca. This hall is disposed in a way that everyone can see this
incision.
The “minbar” instead is a scale from where the imam every
Friday gives his speech, its khutba.
The sultans had their own space, a private balcony, to be
safe from eventual assassins.
Lastly there is a place from where the imam read the
lectures from the Quran53.
53 The Quran is the holy book of Islam. Even thought the Turkey is a laic country, 90% of the population follow the Quran. It’s a book that contains the God’s words revealed to Muhammad, who had received it by the archangel Gabriel.

Outside the mosque there is a place for the faithful in
where, before entering, they have to wash their selves. They need
to wash their head, their hands and their feet.
It is an important moment, it is the purification of the body
before entering for the prayer, as the sign of the cross with the
holy water for Christians.

2) Turkey in the First and Second World War
In 1915 Turkey, under the control of the Ottoman Empire,
entered the First World War besides Germany. They fought for the
defence of their territory.
The military head Atatürk was sent in 1917 and in 1918 for
fight against the Russian imperial forces, which wanted to take
control over Istanbul. On 30th October of 1918 an armistice was
signed which marked the decline of the empire defeated by the
powers of the triple alliance.
From this moment the English, French, and the Italian,
occupied the whole territory. On 19th May of 1919 the Turkish
Independence War begun. A war sustained by Atatürk to defeat
the sultanate and to set Istanbul a free city. In 1920 a treaty, the
treaty of Sèvres, previously marked the end of the Ottoman
Empire and the division of their territory.
The same year the capital of Turkey was definitely
transferred to Ankara, proclaiming an Independent Turkish
Republic. In the Second World war, Turkey remained neutral but it
remained on the side of the allies (Chinese Republic, United
Kingdom, Third Frances Republic, Soviet Union and United
States) offering its military defence in case of help.

2.1) 1920’s agreement of Sèvres – the beginning of international relations with Turkey
On August 10, 1920 in Sèvres a treaty of peace between
the winning powers of the First World War and the Ottoman
Empire was signed.
It foresaw the territorial division of the whole empire.
The territorial clauses of the treaty were hard and they
subtracted to the ex Ottoman Empire around four fifths of its
territory.
This treaty definitely put an end to the Ottoman Empire.
Turkey therefore had to redefine its bounders inside the
limits of the Anatolian peninsula.
It was deprived of all Arabic countries and of the
sovereignty on the bordering states with the Bosporus and with
the narrow Strait of Dardanelles.
After having won the War of Turkish independence they
were constricted to sign a new accord in Lausanne in 1923.
This is the beginning of the Principle of the International
Relationships with Turkey.

3) Contemporary Turkey
As all contemporary cities, Istanbul has suffered many
changes. With changes it is included the presence of multinational
companies such as “McDonald’s”, “Burger King” or “KFC”.
But before all this Istanbul was a quiet city where the
cooking and a walk with your partner, was the only thing that the
Turkish people cared about. Nowadays this city is the centre of
night life, good cooking, and film scenery’s.
Istanbul with his beauty was the protagonist of many films,
also Italians one.
Ferzan Özpetek54 has been capable to represent in the
best ways, what is today Istanbul.
In my opinion he is the best and the most famous filming
director, it is thanks to him if we can valorise much more what it is
this amazing country.
Turkey is the native site also of Orhan Pamuk55, famous in
the entire world for having received the Prime Nobel for Literature
in 2009.

3.1) Culture and cooking
Atatürk declared once: "Culture is the base of the Turkish
Republic."
Nowadays Istanbul is a non-indifferent mixture of traditions
and cultures. Istanbul is considered as a future European capital
for its culture, its history and its kitchen.
The Turkish cuisine is very similar to the Mediterranean
kitchen. The tastes of the whole world mix with it to create a
unique taste.
The principal’s dishes are:
• The Kebab.
One of the most curious dishes in Istanbul.
It is a kind of roll. There are two types of Kebab, the Kebab
of bovine meat made with meat, salad, tomatoes, potatoes and if
wanted with the onion; and the chicken Kebab.
• The Lahmacun.
Made with spicy meat.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
83
• Köfte
It is a dish that can be cooked on the plate, on the grate,
into the oven. It is served with bread, white rice and potatoes.
There are also some typical drinks as:
• Black tea.
Very famous in the entire world. It is served in the roads
around the city, and it is a form of welcome as for the Italian the
coffee.
• The Turkish Coffee.
Done with the funds of the coffee.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
84
• The Ayran.
It is a very popular drink among the Turkish and it is served
in all the places. It is composed from white yogurt, water and salt.
It is an energetic drink.
• The Rakı
It is a Turkish anise that normally they take after dinner.
The variety of the sweets in Turkey is characterized by two
typical sweets:
• The Baklava.
They are an elaboration of pastries with grinded dry fruits,
commonly the walnuts, spinning pasta with honey or with syrup.
They are normally covered in pistachio, chocolate or other
condiments.
• Lokum.
It is a Turkish dessert made of sugar that is aromatized
with water of roses or with lemon. The composition is gelatinous.

3.1.1) “Cookietravel”: the meeting of two passions
https://cookietravel.wordpress.com/
This is my blog created with the platform of “WordPress56”,
made for a University exam.
Passionate for cooking coming from all around the world, I
have posted all kind of recipes with the principal objective to show
at people the culinary richness of several countries.
In this blog I also talk about current news among the world.
The last news that I want to let you know is about last year
Barilla57 Championship, won by a Turkish chef who has Italians
origins.
Every year the Barilla organizes a Championship among
the best chef coming from the entire world, and the one who wins
is the one who puts more passion in making pasta.
He is Daniel Evangelista and he represented in the best
way the Italian pasta all over the World.

4) Turkey candidate as a EU’s member state
Turkey since years had immediately showed interest to
enter the European Union and its institutions.
But the Europeans distrusted enormously Turkey, not only
because they did not understood what is the motivation for such
interest, but also because the whole Europe had the fear and
continuous still today to having fear, that the entrance in EU would
have brought a state of perennial alert because of the continuous
struggles with the Kurdish people (as lately in these days is
happening).
Turkey does not give up and every year it tries to convince
the members of the European Union that it could belong to the UE
without jeopardizing the member states.
There was a meeting with the EU on the 18 March of 2016,
to especially face the urgent case of migrant.
Turkey and the EU have declared to want to continue to
intensify the measures against the traffickers of migrants and they
have welcomed with favor the start of the activity of the NATO in
the Aegean Sea.
But they are aware that further necessary efforts have to
be rapid and decisive to set limit to this immense traffic of human
beings.
Therefore, Turkey will adopt the necessary measures, with
the purpose to guarantee a connection with the Greek islands and
to facilitate in this way the correct operation of precedents
accords.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
87
Every migrant coming from Greek will be recorded and any
application of help will be welcomed, those people who don't
formalize this question instead will have to repatriate.
If these accords do not satisfy the objective to put an end
to the irregular migration and the number of the repatriations, it
will be superior of the number of migrants the mechanism in
matter will be re-examined.
Turkey will adopt any necessary measure to avoid irregular
entrances in Europe and it will collaborate with the member’s
states for the correct attainment of this objective.
Besides the theme of the immigration they have spoken of
the abolition of the obligation of vistas for Turkish citizens, an
important footstep for the same EU.
Also the EU and his members States will collaborate with
Turkey to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria, in such way
to set the local population and the refugees to live in zones more
secure.
All these aspects of these accords will jointly be brought
ahead in parallel and monitored on monthly base.

4.1) NATO’s relations between Turkey and Italy
The first approaches of relationships with Turkey happened
in 1952, when was actualized what had been signed in 1920 in
Sèvres.
The help that Ankara brings inside the alliance is being
appreciated from the U.S. citizens.
During the whole Cold War Turkish-American relationships
they have developed an alliance inside the same alliance.
The negative implications for Turkey of this divergence
between Americans and Europeans have come to the light in
2003, when the Turkish Government has asked to the Nor
Atlántico Council, the application of the art. 4 of the Essay of
Washington58.
France and Germany, together with some other State
member, opposed to the application, strengthening to the eyes of
the Turkish the value of the relationships with the United States.
Nevertheless, in the war against the terrorism the alliance could
assume a new global role, which could be sustained both from the
Europeans and from the Americans. Turkey could contribute to
this new role with its great abilities in the intelligence and to
participate in operations of peace and reconstruction post-conflict.
From this point of view, the future Turkish adhesion to the
European Union could represent a unifying factor of the alliance.
58 Article 4: The parties will be consulted every time that the territorial integrity, the political independence or the security of one of those points will be in danger.

5) My experience lasted six years Thanks to my mother’s job, I have had the possibility and
the fortune to live and to achieve my studies of secondary school
in one, to my opinion, of the most beautiful places in the world.
A country rich in culture, a mixture made of people coming
from the whole world.
During my six years of permanence I have frequented the
National Middle school and the Italian High school I.M.I. where I
have achieved the secondary diploma.
htttp://liceoitaliano.net
Six years are not so many, but they are not even little.
They are enough to understand the culture of a population. As
soon as I have just arrived in Turkey, I just needed to say that I
was Italian and immediately they would venerate me as if I were a
God.
Here the Italian have played an important role beginning
from the First World war, making so many things for this country;
just think that one of the characteristic attractions in Istanbul is the
Tower of Galata, tower built by the people coming from Genoa in
1348, turned today into a Folklorist typical restaurant.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855

Turkey is purely a muslin country but the beautiful thing of
this nation it is that in there live, without any problem, also people
of other religions as the Catholic or the Hebrews.
Being a Catholic, every Sunday I would go to Saint Antony
from Padua Basilica, situated on the Istiklal59 where there were
celebrated at least four masses a day (two in Italian and two in
local language, Turkish).
It is beautiful to know that you can practice your own
religion without nobody judging you, as in many countries it
happens. Unfortunately, nowadays Turkey is not passing a
59 Istiklal Caddesi, Independence Avenue is the main street of Istanbul, as Via del Corso in Roma; It is one of the most popular street of Istanbul in Turkey, attended by about three million people a day. Situated in the historic district of Beyoğlu, it is an elegant pedestrian area long about three kilometers, which is overlooked by all kinds of shops, cinemas, theaters, bars, pubs, night clubs with live music, cake shops, Italian ice creamer and restaurants.

beautiful moment (especially for the tourism), the internal
struggles against the Kurdish people and against people of the
social conservative political party (AKP - Adalet ve Kalkınma
Partisi; JDP – Justice and Development party), are shaving to the
ground this magnificent country. To mine despite also me during
some demonstrations of first May, or in other recurrences, I had to
hide in that small underground restaurants, "to escape" from the
threats of excited (if so can be called) people who created
disorder.
Now imagine everything broadly amplified for an internal
struggle that goes back to many years ago, almost at the
beginnings of the 1800. Every day is not easy to hear that Turkey
is taken of assault and that especially there are innocent victims,
now the fear is even to meet a Turkish person in Rome’s road, I
have heard people say: "I hope that the idea of burst in air does
not come to his mind"; it is really here the point, the ignorance of
the people. Not all the countries are equal, and it never needs to
make of a grass only one bundle. Unfortunately, I believe that
nobody can put an end to these internal wars, (as it was the case
of the Russians against the Chechens) but having fear of a
population is the ugliest thing that can be done.
We can give so much to them, as they can give so much to
us! Two patrimonies of inestimable value that together can make
so many things for the history of the humanity!
Just think that according to the institute of Italian
Commerce in Turkey there are thousands of Italian tourists a year.
There are people as me that has come for job and then has
remained there, there are instead people that it simply goes for

discovering the oriental charm, they also go for starting to initialize
a cultural relationship (with the products to export or to import);
BUT ALL OF US ARE FED UP WITH SEEING EVERY
TIME THESE SCENES MADE OF WARS AND HATE. TURKEY
IS NOT ONLY THIS.
It had been the six most beautiful years of my life and I suggest to
everybody to go to visit once in your life this splendid country.

5.1) My travels in Turkey
During my six years of permanence in Turkey I have been
able to visit a lot of Turkish cities.
Let’s start from the first one: Istanbul.
Istanbul is surely one of the most beautiful cities in the
world for the natural location, and for the wealth of the historical
and artistic patrimony. Point of meeting between two continents
separate only from a bridge, it is a mixture of cultures where so
many different styles of life meet. A city in continuous expansion,
the official population is little superior to the 9 million, but the real
number is certainly higher.
It was founded in the VII century B.C. in a defensive site
naturally protected, from which the commerce could be checked
on the Bosphorus.
For sixteen centuries it was a great capital, at first of the
Byzantine Empire, then of the Ottoman Empire.
Who visits Istanbul for the first time will get struck in seeing
the elevated number of mosques: from the imposing dome
buildings that hack in the sky, to the small mosques of the
provinces of the city that would pass unnoticed if it were not for
their minarets.
A lot of them rose up as churches and subsequently
transformed into mosques for the Islamic cult, after the Ottoman
conquest. The stateliest mosques had become national
monuments and there are not center of religious functions
anymore.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855

Haghia Sophia60 is a notable example of ancient Byzantine
architecture and one of the greatest churches in the world.
Together with the Blue Mosque they are the two principal
monuments in Istanbul, situated one in front of the other in a zone
rich of gardens known as Sultanahmet square.
Its name derives from the sultan Ahmet I, that had leaded
the foundation of the Blue Mosque.
"The church of holy wisdom", Haghia Sophia, is one of the
greatest architectural work in the world. With more than 1400
years to the shoulders, it testifies the refinement of the Byzantine
capital of the VI century, besides practicing a strong influence on
the architecture of the following centuries.
The building was erected above two ancient churches and
inaugurated by the emperor Justinian in the 537. In the XV
century, the Ottomans had turned it into a mosque: minarets,
graves and fountains go up to that period.
Projected as terrestrial mirror of the skies, the inside of
Haghia Sophia succeeds in transmitting a real celestial feeling.
Let's leave to the shoulders this magnificent mosque and
let’s go to see the mythical Blue Mosque.
It takes the name from the tiles of Iznik in blue prevalence,
which decorates the inside. It is one of the most famous religious
buildings of the world. It reaches its maximum shine when
illuminated at night, with the minarets surrounded by the gulls. It
was erected between 1609 and the 1616.
60 The Hagia Sophia, Ayasofya, the Divine Wisdom, is a basilica, as well as one of the main monuments of Istanbul. It was Christian cathedral until 1453, and greek-orthodox patriarchal seat, then a mosque, and finally a museum since 1935. Known for its giant dome, apex of Byzantine architecture, was completed in 537.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
95
Another imposing monument is the Tower of Galata.
It is the characteristic outline, is a round tower high 62
meters. It was erected in 1348 by people coming from Genoa.
During the Ottoman period the building was a tower of control, but
it was subsequently used for tourist purposes. The last two floors
are busy from a restaurant that the evening offers typical
performances of Turkish people.
Edirne
Situated on the river Tunca near the border with Greece,
Edirne is a university provincial city that holds one of the most
known monuments of Turkey, the Selimiye mosque.
As it attests this amazing building, historically Edirne was
very important. This city goes up to the 125 A.C. when the
emperor Adriano unified two small cities to form Adrianople. For
almost one century Edirne was the Ottoman capital.
It was built by the architect Koca Mimar Sinan, the most
famous architect, which realized 131 mosques and other 200
types of buildings. Today these mosques are considered as
artistic and cultural patrimony of the city. The complex includes an
educational system that today host the Museum of Turkish and
Islamic arts, a school and the Kavaflar, a covered bazaar.
The mosque was commissioned by Selim II61; it was
initiated in 1569 and completed in 1575, one year after his death.
It was the work of which Sinan went prouder.
In his memories wrote: 61 Selim II, Suleyman I’s son.

96
"With the help of Allah and the favor of the sultan Selim
Khan, I have succeeded in building a six cubits deeper dome
Haghia Sophia62"
The city is also known for another motivation: the annual
championship of struggle of Kirkpinar63.
It takes place every year; it is an event known in the whole
Turkey and is combined to a week of celebrations. Before the
competition the fighters wear leather trousers to the knee, and
they are anointed from head to toe with diluted olive’s oil.
Subsequently the teacher of ceremonies, the “cazgir”, invites them
to take part to a parade in which they march in military style
among the field, accompanied from a drum and from an oboe to
an only reed. The clashes can last up to two hours and they
include long periods of silent concentration alternated by attempts
to throw down to the ground the adversary.
Ephesus
Ancient city of Lidia. Colony of ions, risen on the Asian
coast, on the river Caistro in a place already frequented in
Mycenae age as the recent excavations has shown. It is to
enumerate among the richest and populous cities of the ancient
world; it was country of greatest philosophers. It developed
especially in Hellenistic and Roman age, when it became chief
town of the province of Asia; it was also center of the active
Christian community to the preaching of S. Paul and S. John the
Apostol, which the tradition wants that he has been buried here. 62 Quote of the architector Mimar Sinan present in his elaborate of his memories. 63 The struggke of Kirkpinar is a typical turkish fight, it is held in the city of Edirne from many ages to now.

The legend wants that the city has been founded around
the I millennium B.C. from ionic populations that abandoned their
earth because of to advance of the you Gild: Androkles was
driven here until from a fish, as it had been aforesaid him from the
oracle.
Ephesus hold the temple of Artemide, considered one of
the seven wonder of the world, becoming a center of religious cult
of great faithful call.
The goddess Artemide was venerated here in her dresses
of symbol of the fertility since remote times. It attracted masses of
pilgrims and believers, with an economic advantage for the city.
The Greek Artemide replaced the Cybele of Anatolia,
mother of all of this that is created. It was during the Roman
domination that an imposing and sumptuous temple was erected,
so beautiful to be enumerated among the Seven Wonder of the
ancient world. Alexander the Macedonian stayed struck by his
beauty, it conquered it without hit hurting it, after his death the
control passed to its believer lieutenant Lisimaco.
Ephesus became the most important among the cities of
the Provinces of Asia here the most violent revolts happened
against the power of Rome. It was an important center for the
Christians of Asia: the apostle Paul sojourned here and the legend
wants that in the woods around Ephesus viewed Maria assisted
by Saint John. Ephesus was also the center of the Ecumenical
Council of the 431 B.C. Despite the attempt of Tiberio and Adriano
to arrest the closing of the natural port, the city was condemned to
a slow decline.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855
98
The city was planned by the architect Ippodamo of Mileto
with an urban plan that foresaw a chessboard position of the
principal streets.
Continuing along the road that forms the backbone of the
urban center of the ancient Ephesus, on the right it opens the
small and well preserved fan of stone of the Odeon, or small
theater, dug in the sides of the hill “Panayir Dagÿi”: it could have
hold 1400 spectators and was employed as the place of reunion
of the city suggestion.
Close to the Odeon, always on the same side of the street,
it was showed the Prytaneion, the town hall of Ephesus, in front of
which there is the fountain of Pollion, overhung by a slender arc in
marble.
A little more forward it is admired a plate of triangular
marble that was set on the pavement of the fountain.
It deals with an intact work of the II century B.C. and its
splendid bas-reliefs reproduces a winged goddess, the Nikè
Greek symbol of the Victory.
Behind to the road there is the area of the Domitian temple
with two gorgeous erect columns and united by a lintel that it
holds up another pair of it similar to caryatids. The vastness of the
foundations of this temple gives us the measure of those that had
to be its proportions.
Continuing along the beautiful paved road of marble the
amazing we will get in the street of the Curtis. The name comes
from an order of priests of the goddess Artemide, called for the
note Curtis.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855

We are about to enter the elegant Ephesus, in where there
were found the house of important people and the neuralgic public
buildings for the administration of the city. The first one that we
meet on the right is the monument of Mimeo: it has the aspect of
an arc of triumph with four faces.
On each of the four sides there are niches and blocks of
marble with beautiful bas-reliefs that represent the patrician
Mimeo and its ancestors. Between the monument of Mimeo and
the fountain of Trajan there are the rests of an arc of triumph.
The fountain of Trajan has been put gather together with a
lot of passion and accuracy but many pieces are missing, in fact
of the colossus statue of the emperor, only remains an enormous
marmoreal foot that leans on the planet Earth or on a round
sphere perfectly.
More forward raised the ruins of an isolate in where, with
every probability, there was a public brothel. The attribution of
such unequivocal role is based on incontestable tests: a
representative fresco retracts a winking dame, a little statue of
Priapus in the full of his exuberances taken from the well of the
mansion and, on the threshold, the imprint of a direct foot toward
the inside of the house. Never mind the fresh water that comes
out of a fountain situated in the yard of this building is pleasant in
the summer heat.
Returning back at the end of the street of the Curtis, there
is the monstrosity Library of Celsius that acts as a closing scene
and as a background.
The face of the building is an absolute architectural
harmony, model and paradigm of classical lines.
Giorgia Giannetti “Turkey: Digging into Mith, History and Art” Matricola n. 1855

Tiberius Celsius Polyamines, Roman senator and
proconsul of Asia in the 107 B.C., had a devoted child, Julius
Tiberius Aquila, that, at the death of his father, he wanted to erect
a monument in his honor.
In fact, was erected a library that perpetrated the memory
of the proconsul: it was a gift to the culture of the whole citizens
and it guarded the sarcophagus of the dead father. Among the
general amazement, during the excavations in 1904, the burial
(included skeleton) of Celsius was founded. The face of the library
reassumes all of its artistic value in the perfect harmony of the
proportions contained by thin nervous systems of columns. To the
inside there was a great room with niches to put in its inside the
rolls of the manuscripts.
Overcome the library of Celsius, the road changes name
and becomes the street of the Marbles.
To the left the great market there was with porticos and
shops; at the end, here it is the well exceptionally preserved
theater, with sixty-six staircases for 25.000 spectators.
From here it begins the street Arcadian or street of the port,
wide 11 meters and long 500, paved in marble and embellished
by colonnades, on which leaned out the shops. It was one of the
most famous monumental streets of the antiquity: from the theater
of the city it conducted up to the port.
It seems that Cleopatra, reaching Anthony that was in
Ephesus, had not lost the occasion to make an uproarious entry in
the city, something with which surprise the Ephesians. In fact, the
procession that brought her in city center from the ship was so
pompous, and the exhibition of wealth of the sovereign was such

that aroused rumors that lasted centuries. Today, there isn’t any
more trace. The Artemisia is constituted by the only column
survivor of the splendid temple devoted to the goddess Artemide.
It is all of what remains, besides the delimitation of the
foundations, of one of the Seven Wonder of the ancient world: a
forest of columns and a height of 17 meters. Alexander the great
astonished looking at it, we can only imagine today in his solitary
frame and to have day-dream.
Pammukale
Does it seem a montage it is not true?! But believe it or not,
these are the spectacular terraces of white travertine of
Pamukkale.
They form when the water of the warm sources, flowing
down for the slant free carbonic anhydride, leaves deposits of
calcium. White's layers carbonate of calcium, that have formed
some steps on the highland, had been called Pamukkale (cotton
castle). They are of real natural thermal waters. The water of
Pamukkale is pure, drinkable and light. The continuous flow of

Bursa
Bursa was the capital of the Ottoman Empire among the
1326 and 1365. It is one of the tourist places more visited, not
only for its conspicuous cultural patrimony, mosques, bazaar,
caravanserais and mausoleums, but also for its natural beauties.
Situated in an amazing position. Between fertile orchards of the
Uludağ Mountain, that with its deep forests it dominates the
inhabited area. It is also called “Bursa the Green one."
It is so called just for this symbiosis with the vegetation that
penetrates among the house forming luxuriant gardens. It is also
one of the most important centres for the winter Olympic Games
of the country. The climate is typical Turkish: in summer hardly the
temperature goes up to 30° Celsius and the winter is fresh and
rainy (in January / February it can also snow).
One of the most important mosques here in Bursa it is the
Yeşil Cami or the green mosque the most famous religious
building in the city. It was commissioned by Mehmet I in 1412, but
it remained incomplete until his death in the 1421. Nevertheless, it
is the most beautiful Ottoman mosque built before the conquest of
Constantinople. A unique mosque in its kind, shining of tiles from
the elaborate sketches created with the technique of the “cuerda
seca”. The tiles are painted in green, blue and yellow, with gold
threads added after the cooking. Bursa is also note for its
productions of silk. It is obligatory a visit inside the factory of silk
and to the bazaar.

llevaron muchas iglesias Cristianes.

73 Suleyman I, hijo de Selim I, llamado Suleyman el magnifico.

Osman Gazi (1299 – 1326)
Orhan Gazi (1326 – 1360)
Murat I (1360 – 1389)
Yildirim Bayazid I (1389 – 1403)
Celebi Mehmet I (1403 – 1421)
Murat II (1421 – 1444 y 1446 – 1451)
Fatih Mehmet II (1444 – 1446 y 1451 – 1481)
Beyazid II (1481 – 1512)
Yavuz Selim I (1512 – 1520)
Suleyman I – Suleyman el magnifico (1520 – 1566)

Entonces no veremos

tradición y culturas no indiferente.

https://cookietravel.wordpress.com/

Educación Superior, entre un instituto Italiano (I.M.I), donde he
conseguido respectivamente el Graduado en Educación
Secundaria y el Diploma de Bachiller.
http://www.liceoitaliano.net

político conservador turco, (AKP – Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi;

nunca le venga a ellos la mala idea de hacerse estallar en el aire”;
los productos destinados a la exportación y a la importación);
