U~a tendenza costante e comune a tutte o (uasi le riviste di fisica le spinge

pii~ o meno all~inflazionc e le Redazioui discuto~w piit o meno perio&icamente

circa ~e co~ttromisure da prendere per arrestarla o almeno contenerla. La ten-

denza i~flazionistica si era mani]estata in ]orma acuta~ anche per (~ II Nuovo

Cimento ~, su~ finite del 1964. A~cuni provvedimenti sono gid stati presi nel-

l'ambito dei poteri redazionali, e hanno avuto un certo ef/etto; tuttavia altri di

maggior respi,ro sott o in corso e riteniamo opportuno renderli noti.

Per quanto possa apparire i~utile desideriamo cominciare col ricordare che nell~Editorhde del 1 ~ .Luglio 1963 si diceva:

~ Un minimo di origiualit5 nel tema della ricerca e nei risultati raggiunti

saran~o condizione essenziale per la pubblicazione degli artico~i. Cos~ il Coral-

taro di Redazione spera di veder scomparire non solo dalle pagine del (( Nuovo

Cimento ~), ma anche dalla pila dei manoscritti ricevuti, quei lavori di fisica teorica che riseuto~w eccessivame~te della moda del mese ; quei lavori di fisica

sperimentale che mostrat~o eccessicamente l~abuso ottuso delle tecniche di rive-

lazione e osservazione pih avanzate e infine (uelle (( Note Tecniche ~) dove la per-

sonalith scie~ttifica dell~autore si mani/esta~ per esempio, nel suggerire u n si-

sterna di circidti pir o metro transistorizzati perfettamente equivalenti nei loro fini e ne~t,e loro prestazioni ad attri gi~ esistenti.

sono tanti e cos~ prolifici, e i l numero dei lavori ~ destinato a crescere, pen-

siamo cite per mantenere una rivista scicntifiea a un. livello decoroso ci si debba

i,~na~zi tutto va~erc di v~t largo eorpo di .Revisori assai severi; disposti a

rifiutare qualche lavoro magari privo di errori, ma pressoch~ inutile anche se non proprio banalv.

Za prassi seguita dalla Direzione ~ quella di sottoporre ogni lavoro al

giudizio di due o pii~ Revisori.

I Revisori italiani sono 98 e in essi si ravvisa una provata competenza.

I Revisori stranieri sono presentemente circa altrettanti; e i loro nomi costi-

tuiscono~ nell~insieme~ una lista di un'autorith difficilmente superabile. Con queste premesse pensiamo di poter affrontare d'ora in avanti la responsabilitd

di qualehe errore che potrebbe derivare da una maggiore severitd di giudizio;

tale pericolo sard compensato da un incremento nella rapidit5 di pubblica-

zione~ da un~accresciuta accuratezza editoriale~ ma specialmente dalla maggiore

fiducia dei lettori nella validit~ culturale dei lavori pubblicati. Noi riteniamo

in]atti che i lettori di una rivista come (( II Nuovo Cimento ~> non vi cerchino

soltanto i lavori del settore in cui ciascuno ~ pile o meno specializzato. Tall

lavori arrivano oggi sul loro tavolo sotto ]orma di <( preprint >b spesso in pochi

giorni o settimane daUa loro stesura e il giudizio dello specialista pub essvre

sufficiente a ]arne una selezione. M a su una rivista come (( I1 Nuovo Cimento ~>~

si aspira altres~ a teggere cib che aiuti a superare l~angustia crescente e spesso

mortificante della specializzazione. E quindi indispensabile dare al lettore la

fiducia che una selezione sia stata compiuta per assecondare e ]avorire anche

questa sua giusta aspirazione culturale.

_Per cib che riguarda il tempo medio intercorrente Ira ricezione e pubbli-

cazione ~ ]orse superfluo dire chv i provvedimenti presi via via per ridurlo

sensibilmente non sono risultati sufficienti, i n particolare non si ~ potuto

n~ si pub aumentare il lavoro dei tievisori~ gih anche troppo impegnati nella

loro generosa collaborazione con la Itedazione. _Per ]ortuna il numero dei

Revisori ~ in continuo aumento grazie a quegli scienziati dei _Paesi europei

ed extraeuropei che tanto amichevotmente reagiscono alle nostre sollecitazioni;

a tutti loro rinnoviamo qui le espressioni della nostra viva gratitudine.

Za loro sempre piie numerosa partecipazione non solo contribuirh a una

progressiva riduzione del tempo di pubblicazione, ma - - e cib ha per noi

un valore molto maggiore - - accentuerd sempre pile it carattere internazio-

nale del Nuovo Cimento.

Una componente secondaria~ ma non trascurabile nel provocare ritardi,

spesso notevoli quanto deprecabili, risiede nella ]requentv trascuratezza grafica

dei manoscritti.

La t~edazione rinnova la preghiera a tutti gli autori di redigere i loro

lavori attenendosi alle norme che saranno pubblicate sul numero 48 del (( Bol-

lettino della S.I. tz. ~> e i cui punti essenziali sono stampati nella terza pa-

gina di copertina di ogni ]ascicolo. Seguendo questa linea la Redazione ha

anche deciso di non mandate agli autori per la correzione le bozze delle .Let-

tere in corso di pubblicazione.

Dobbiamo avvertire abbonati e lettori the col volume X L sard introdotta per (~ II .Nuovo Cime~to ~ una variazione editoriale di un certo rilievo.

Essa consiste neIl'iniziare, a partire dal primo fascicolo del volume X L

la pubblicazione di due serie distinte di volumi: una sezione A~ dove saranno

convogliati tutti i lavori di fisica the si ocvupano di particelle elementari

(teorici e sperimentali e ~ualunque siano le tecniche e i mezzi usati), e una

sezione B dove verranno raccolti lavori riguardanti, indipendente,mente dalle

tecniche usate, gli altri campi della fisica.

Questo voler separare la fisica delle particelle elementari dal resto ~ moti-

vato dal desiderio di aumentare la maneggevolezza dei volumi e insieme, con

una suddivisione di compiti, la speditezza del lavoro redazionale.

.La decisione ha quindi origini d'indole pratica ed ~ stata presa anche con

una certa preoccupazione perch~ non dovrebbe accentuare la gid eccessiva

specializzazione delle ricerche fisiche.

~ i natura pratica sono anche le ragioni che hanno indotto a concentrare

in una parte (parte A) i lavori di un solo settore, quetlo delle particvlIe

elementari. Cib si ~ reso necessario per il rapporto t r a i l numero dei lavori di

questo settore e quello dei rimanenti che vengono inviati al (~ Nuovo Cimento ~.

Noi speriamo tuttavia the questa decisione non dispiaccia ai cultori di

altri campi della fisica diversi da ~uello delle partieelle elementari, in quanto

essi potranno trovare qui articoli riguardanti una linea di ricerche oggi ]orse

un po' troppo di moda, ma dove di tanto in tanto un nuovo risultato speri-

mentale sorprendente, o una nuova sintesi capace d'investire intrinsecamente

e con le sue conseguenze tutta la filosofia naturale, saranno di compenso alle

numerose (( variazioni su un tema .. ~) a essi gid sostanzialmente noto.

Ci auguriamo quindi che ~uesta nostra decisione sar5 bene accolta dai

lettori, anche se richiederd qualche cambiamento helle modalit5 di abbonamento

di cui ~ data notizia nel prospetto inserito in questo ]ascicolo.

nelle nostre pile vive speranze che nei prossimi anni (( 1l 2~uovo Cimento ~)

si aRermi sempre piit come esempio di rivista intercontinentale piit che inter-

nazionale, nella quale insieme alla piit assoluta assenza di ogni tendenza,

anche riposta, di sciovinismo scientifico, siano attenuati gli aspetti, cultu-

ralmente assai deleteri, del~a eccessiva specializzazione nel eampo delle disci- pline fisiche.

Une tendence constante, commune 5 toutes ou presque toutes les revues de physique, les pousse plus ou moins vivement ~ ~inflation et les Rddactions discutent plus ou moins pdriodiquement les mesures h prendre pour arrdter ou au moins contenir l~avalanehe. C'est ainsi qu~au Conseil de Prdsidence de la Socidtd Italienne de Physique on discute sur les moyens d'env~iguer la

tende,~we 5 l~inflation qui aussi pour le (~ Nuovo Cimento ~> s~est mani#stde aigiie vers la fin de 196g.

Quelques rem~des ont dtd ddj5 pris par la rddaction else mdme et ont dd]h eu quelques e#ets; toute]ois d'autres mesures de plus grande envergure sont en cours d~adoption et il nous para~t utile de les /aire conna~tre.

Bien quail puisse appara~tre inutile~ nous voulons commencer par rap- peler que dans l'Editorial du ler Juillet 1963 nous disions: " Un min imum d~originalitd dans le sujet de la recherche et des rdsultats obtenus sera une condition essentieZle pour la publication. " On demande aussi que les articles soient dcrits clairement et avec ordre et comprennent toutes les informations (ou les rdfdrences) ndcdssaires pour la

comprdhension m~me de la part de physiciens non strictement spdcialisds dans le su# t du travail".

Lcs articles soumis au Comitd de Rddaction pour dtre publids dans le (~ Nuovo

Cimento ~) sont nombreux; plus de mille par an. Un nombre si dlevd de travaux

examiner a pour consdquence une large disparitd de jugements avee une

considdrable probabilitd d'erreurs; mais aujourd'hui les physiciens sont si

nombreux et si prolifiques que le hombre de travaux est partant destind (~ tou~ours s'aceror et nous pensons que pour maintenir une revue scientifique d u n niveau acceptable il ]aut avant tout pouvoir disposer d'un vaste corps de rdviseurs, disposals ~ accepter le risque de rd]user par]ois un article gdnial afin d'dliminer une masse de travaux qui tout en dtant ]ormalement corrects

sont presque inutiles pour ne pas dire banals.

La pratique suivie par la Direction est de soumettre chaque article an

jugement d'au moins deux rdviseurs.

Les r~viseurs italie~s so~t 98 dont la compdtence est indiscutable. Les

rdviseurs dtrangers sont d peu pros en mdme nombre, et leurs noms ]orment

un palmar~s d'une autoritd difficilement surpassable. La Direction est certaine

de pouvoir leur accorder sa pleine confiance. Cela dit, nous pensons de

pouvoir affronter dordnavant la responsabilitd de quelques graves erreurs qui

pourraient ddriver d'une plus grande sdvdritd de jugement. Ce danger sera lar-

gement compens~ par l'augmentation de la rapiditg de publication, par une

plus grande attention dditoriale, mais spdcialement par la plus grande con-

fiance des lecteurs dans la validitd culturelle des articles publids.

Nous pensons en ]ait que les lecteurs d'une revue comme <(I1 Nuovo

Cimento )> n'y cherehent pas seulement les travaux du secteur clans lequel

chacun d'eux est plus ou moins spdcialisd. Zes travaux leurs arrivent sous forme

de preprint, souvent apr~s peu de jours ou semaines de leur compilation et le

jugement du spgcialiste pent suffire h en ]aire une sglection. Dans une revue

comme (~ I I Nuovo Cimento >) on aspire aussi bien ~ lire quelque chose qui

puisse aider 5 dvader de la restriction croissante et par/ois mortifiante de la

spdcialisation. I1 est surtout indispensable de donner au lecteur la sensation

qu'une sdlection a gtd faite pour satisfaire sa juste aspiration culturelle.

Pour ce qui a trait au temps moyen s'dcoulant entre la rdception dee

travaux et leur publication il est peut-gtre surperflu de dire que les disposi-

tions successivement adoptdes pour l'abrdger sensiblement se sont demontrdes

insuffisantes. E n particulier on n'a pas p u c t on ne peut pas augmenter le

trawdl des rdviseurs, dej5 trop pris par leur gdndreuse collaboration avec la

rddaction. C'est hereux que le nombre des rdviseurs soil toujours croissant grdce aux savants des pays europdens et extraeuropdens qui rdagissent d nos

solicitations de fa~on si amiable. Nous leur renouvelons ici les expressions

de notre plus vive grate;rude. Leur participation, toujours plus nombreuse,

non seulement contribuera 5 la rdduction du temps de publication, mais

- - et nous estimo~s cette consequence de la plus grande importance - - ]era

ressortir plus vivement le caract~re inter natiot~al de (( I1 _~uovo Cimento ~).

Un motif secondaire, mais non trascurable qui provo~ue des retards

souvent notables ainsi que ddprdcables, est ~a mauvaise prdsentation graphique des manuscrits.

vaux aux r~gles qui sero~tt publides dans le no. 48 du (( Bollettino della S . L P . )>

et dont les plus essentielles sont imprimdes ~t la troisikme page de la couver-

lure des ]ascicules. Suivant cette pe,t~sde la rddaction a ddeidd de ne plus

envoyer aux anteurs les dprenves des Lettres ~ la Rddaction.

X EDITORIAL

Elle consiste clans la publication 5 partir du premier ]ascicule du Volume X L de deux sdries distinctes de volumes; une section A~ dans laquelle seront compris tousles articles thdoriques et expdrimentaux, quelle que soient les techniques et les moyens employds~ s~occupant de partieules dldmentaires et une section B qui eontiendra tousles autres travaux.

Cette sdparation de Za physique des partieules dldmentaires du reste n'est pas seulement motivde par la ndcessitd de rendre les volumes plus maniables~ et d~augmenter~ par un division des tdches~ la rapiditd du travail de la rddac- tion. La ddcision obdit partant 5 des considdrations pratiques et a dtd prise avec quelques prdoeeupations parce qu~elle ne devrait pas aecentuer ta spd- ciaTisation ddjd excessive des recherohes do physique. La concentration darts une section (A) des travaux d'un seul secteur~ celui des partieules eTdmentaires~ est exigde essentiellement par le hombre des travaux de ce secteur par rapport au nombre des autres articles soumis au (( s Cimento ~). •ous eroyons toute]ois que cette ddcision ne doive pas ddplaire aux spdeialistes des autres domaines de la physique paree q&ils pourront trouver dans la section A des articles concernant une ligne de reeherches~ aujourd~hui peut-dtre trop la mode~ mais ou ils pourront par]ois trouver un nouveau rdsultat expdrimen- tal surprenant ou une nouvelle synth~se, capable de porter intrins~quement et par ses consequences sur route la phylosophie naturelle; et ee sera une com- pensation pour les nombreuses (~ variations sur le th~me... ~) qui leurs est substantiel~ement 1amilier.

Nous souhaitons pourtant que notre ddeision soit bien acueiUie par nos lecteurs~ bien quelle exigera quelques variations dans les modalitds des abon- nements~ qui sont exposdes dans le prospectus insdrd dans ce cahier.

Nous espdrons vivement qu'au tours des prochaines anndes (( IS Nuovo Cimento ~) s~affirmera toujours davantage comme une revue intercontinentale plut6t qu~internationale~ clans laquelle~ avee la plus absolue absence d'e chaque ]orme de ehauvinisme svientifique~ l~universalitd des sciences physiques dans le cadre de la culture de notre temps soit toujours plus dvidente.

A. constant trend common to all, or nearly all, journals of physics, drives

them more or less to inflation and the Editorial Boards argue periodically

on the steps to be taken to stop or at least contain it. So, also the Italian Physical 5~ociety in the last session of its Board of Directors has discussed the

measures to be taken to stem the inflationistic tendency which at the end of 196• has earnestly menaced also (( IZ Nuovo Cimento ~.

Some measures have been already taken by the Publication Office and have had some erects; but other more important ones have been decided and we think it advisable to make them known.

A~though it may seem useless, we wish to begin by remembering that in the Editorial of Ju ly 1st 1963 we said: " -4 certain min imum of originality

in the subject of the research as well as in the results achieved will be an essen- tial condition for publication. The Editorial Board hopes that, as a result~ the

~olTowing types of articles will disappear, not only from the pages of (( i l ~Vuovo Cimento )~ but also from the pile of the received manuscripts: theoretical papers that show the stamp of the latest fashionable subject; experimental papers with a marked tendency to misuse the most advanced techniques of detection and

observation, and (( Technical ~Votes ~ which over-reflect the author's scientific personality, e.g. by recommending a more or less transistorized circuit system~ the results and performance of which do not in any way di#er from or surpass those already in existence.

" The Editorial Board will require that the articles be written in a clear

and orderly fashion and that they include a~l the information necessary to ren- der them intelligible to readers who have not specialized in the subject matter ".

The papers which are submitted to the Editorial Board for publication in (~ I1 Nuovo Cimento ~) are many~ more than thousand a year. Such a high

number of papers to be appraised fosters a large Gaussian of judgements together with a considerable probability of errors; at present, however~ that

physicists are so many and so prolific, and the number of papers is con-

tinuously growing, we think that to keep a scientific journal at a decent level

one must in first place dispose o] a larg~ star] of very severe Reviewers~ who

are willing to accept the risk of sometimes refusing a paper of genius in order

to refuse a mass of eventually very correct but useless and commonplace papers.

The practice followed by the Direction is to submit every paper to the judgement of two or more Reviewers.

The Italian Reviewers are 98 and are assuredly competent. The 2'oreign Reviewers are about the same number and their names ]orm a list o] an indisputable authority. The Direction thinks they all deserve undeniably absolute credit.

$~ollowing this line o] thought we think to be able to take Item now on the responsibility o] some errors which might stem ]rom a greater severity o] judgement; this danger will be largely extenuated by a gain in publication speed, by a growing accuracy in publication, but principally by the greater confidence o] the readers in the cultural value o~ the papers published.

We think indeed that the readers o] a journal like (( I1 Nuo'vo Cimento )) look in it not only ]or works on the subjects in which they are more or less specialized. These they receive in ]orm o] preprints, o]ten within a [ew days or weeks Item their drawing up, and the judgement o] the specialist may suffice to select among them. In a journal like (( I1 Nuovo Cimento ~) one wishes as weT1 to find papers which allow to overcome the growing and some- times morti]ying distress o] specialization. I t is there]ore essential to give the reader confidence that a selection has been made to ]avour this justified cultural aim.

As to the average time elapsing ]rom the submission of the papers to their publication, it is perhaps useless to say that the measures successively taken to shorten it substantially have not proved sufficient. I n particular it is not possible to increase the task o] the Reviewers, who are already too heavily overburdened by their generous collaboration with the _Publishing Office. Happily their number is continuously growing thanks to European and Extraeuropean scientists who ]riendly answer our urging quests; we are glad to renew here to all of them the expressions of our deep gratitude. Their ever growing collaboration will not only contribute to a progressive reduction o] publication time but--which in our eyes has much greater desert--ever more accentuate the international character o/ (( I1 Nuovo Cimento ~).

_4 secondary but not negligible cause o] o]~en notable and depTorab~e delays is the ]requent graphic neglect o] the manuscripts.

The _Publication Board begs the authors to prepare papers they intend to submit to (( I1 Nuovo Cimento ~) ]ollowing the rules which shall be printed in No. 48 o] the (( Bollettino della S.I .F. ~)~ and the most important o] which are published on the third cover page o] each issue. $'ollowing these lines the _Publication Board has decided to publish directly the Letters to Editor sending no more galleys to Authors.

With Volume X L a modification o] some relevance will be introduced in (~ I1 Nuovo Cimento ~).

I t consists to begin, with the first issue o] Vol. XL , the publication o] two distinct series o] volumes: a Section A, which shall contain all papers dealing with elementary particles (~heoretical and experimental ones, whatever the

techniques and means used) and a Section B containing all the other papers. This division is not only suggested by the wish to have handier volumes,

and to further by the subdivision of tasks the speed el the publication. The decision has therefor~ been taken on practical grounds and not with-

out some hesitation as it is not intended to emphasize the still excessive spe-

cialization of physical research. To concentrate in a single Section (Section A) papers on a single topic,

that el elementary particles~ becomes necessary in view el the ratio of the papers on this matter which are submitted for publication to those sent to (( II iVuovo

Cimento ~) which are dealing with other questions. We are however of the opinion that this decision should not displease the adepts of other realms of

physics, as they may find here papers dealing with a line el research, which today is perhaps too much the fashion, but where once and. again th6y may find some new surprising experimental results or a new synthesis which

may be able to invest intrinsically and by its consequences the whole of the

natural philosophy and shall compensate the numerous ((variations on a theme... ~ they substantially already know.

We hope therefore that our decision will be welcomed by the readers, even

though it will call for some changes in the subscription rules, which are reported in the leaflet inserted in this issue.

I t is our dearest hope that in the next years (( l l ~Vuovo Cimen~o ~) shall ~ver more grow an example of an intercontinental more than international jour- nal in which, together with the absolute absence of every form of even hidden

scientific chauvinism~ the universatity of the physicaZ science in the frame of today's culture may be ever clearer and manifest.

Alle, oder /ast alte, physika~ischen Zeitschri]ten neigen stetig zur Inflation und die Schri#leitungen beraten mehr oder weniger periodiseh i~ber die Marl- nahmen um die Inflation au#uheben oder mindestens zu m~fligen. So auch im _Priisidenzrat des <( IYuovo Cimento ~) wird seit einiger Zeit besprochen was am besten zu tun sei um die inflationistische Tendenz einzuddmmen, die Ende 1964 beim <~ Nuovo Cimento ~ sich bemarkbar gemacht hatte.

Einlge Maflnahmen sind sehon seitens der Redaktion getroffen worden und haben gewisse Wirkung gehabt; nicht~destoweniger andere und wich- tigere Anderungen sind im Gang und wir denken es zweckm~flig dar~ber zu berichten.

Obschon es i~berfli~ssig erscheinen mag, woTlen wir daran erinnern, daft wir im Editorial des 1. Jul i 1963 sehrieben: " Ein Minimum an Urspri~ng- lichkeit im Gegenstand der Untersuehung und der erreiehten Ergebnisse ist die wesentliche Bedingung zur Ver6ffentlichung. Dadureh hofft die Redaktion nieht nur aus den Seiten des (( Nuovo Cimento ~) sondern aueh aus dem Stofl der eingereichten Manuskripte #ne theoretischen Arbeiten versehwinden zu sehen, die yon der Mode des Monats zu stark beeinfluflt erscheinen; jene Arbeiten aus der Experimentalphysik die den s tump#n Miflbraueh der ]ortgesehrittensten Enthi~llungs- und Beobaehtungstechnik zeigen und endlich #ne (( Technischen Noten ~ in denen die wissenseha]tliehe _Pers6nlichkeit des Vet]assets sich z.B. dutch den Vorsehlag yon mehr oder weniger transisto- risierten Stromkreisen offenbart~ die in ihren Zwecken und ihren Zeistungen anderen schon verwendeten vSllig gleichwertig sind.

Die Auswertung einer so bedeutenden AnzaM yon Au#iitzen bodingt eine ebenso- grofle Anzahl versehiedener Urteile und zugleich eine grofle Wahrscheinlich- keit yon Irrti~mern. I n der Praxis wird jede eingereichte Arbeit dem Urteil mindestens zweier

Revisoren, ~enterstellt.

~ i e Italienischen Recisoren sind 98 und alle yon erprobtvr J~achkenntnis.

Die Ausl~indischen Itevisore~ sind unge]iihr in gleicher Zahl und ihre .Namen

bilden eine Liste yon, uni~bertof[enem Ansehen. Ih~en allen dcnkt die Direk-

tion ihr volles Vertraue~t schenken zu kSn~en. M i t diesen Voraussetzungen

denken wi t yon nun an jene atwh schwere Irrti~mer verantworten zu di~rfen,

die aus strengeren Urteilsricbtlinien ]olgen k6wnten; diese Ge]ahr wird durch

raschere VerSf/entlicbu~g, dutch erh6hte Genauigkeit im ~ruck , aber beson-

ders durch das gr6flere Vertrauen der Zeser auf den kulturell Wert der

W i r sind in der Tat der Meinu~g, daft die Leser einer Zeitschrift wie

(~ I1 Nuovo Cimento ~) darin nicht nur die Arbeiten des Gebiets in dent ~eder

mehr oder weniger spezialisiert ist finden sollen. ~iese Arbeiten gelangett auf

seinem Tisch als Preprints, o/t einige Tage, oder Wochen, nach ihrere Ver]as-

sung und das Urteil des tZachmannes mag g,~i~gen um eine Auslese zu mache~.

Au] einer Zeitschrift wie ~II Nuo~,o Cimento ~) wi~nscht man aber das zu

lesen, das hilft die wachsende und oft demi~tigende Einsehriinkung der Spezia-

lisierung zu i~berwinden. Es ist deshalb unentbehrlich dem Leser die Gewifiheit

zu verleihen, daft eine Au.~.wtdd getro)~en worden ist um auch dieses berechtigte

kulturelle Bediir]nis zu be]riedigen.

Was die durehsehnillliehe Zeit anbela~gt die t'on der Ankun]t zur Ver6]-

Mit Band X L wird im (( Nuovo Cimento ~) eine wichtige .dnderung einge- ]i~hrt werden.

Sie besteht darin, mit dem ersten HeJt yon Band X L die VerSf[entlichung yon zwei verschiedenen Serien Bdnde: ein Teil A in welehem alle Arbeiten {theoretische und experimentage, welehe auch die verwendeten .Mittel und Technik seien) erseheinen werden, die sich auJ Elementarteilchen beziehen; und ein Teil B welches alle andere Arbeiten enthalten wird.

J)iese Trennung der Physik der Elementarteilchen yore Ubrigen ist nicht

n u t dureh den Wunsch bedingt die ]tandlichkeit der B~inde zu erh6hen, und zugleich dutch die Teilung der Au]gaben die Arbeit der Redaktion zu beschleu-

nigem. Der Entschlufi beruht mithin auJ praktischen Gri~nden, und wurde auch mit einigen Bedenken gefaflt, in der Be]~rchtung die schon i~bergrofle Spezialisierung der physikalischen t~orschung welter au/ die Spitze zu treiben. Uberdies wird jeder I, eser Arbeiten aus Gebieten leichter finden, die, obschon dem eigenen Jremd, ihm ein besonderes Interesse bieten sollten.

Die Konzentration in einem einzigen Tell (A) der Arbeiten aus einem einzigen Gebiet, das der Elementarteilchen, ist hauptsiichTich durch das Ver- hiiltnis bedingt das zwisehen der Anzahl der Arbeiten aus diesem Gebiet zu der

Anzahl der ~brigen die dem (( Nuovo Cimento ~ unterstellt werden besteht. W i t

glauben jedenfalls, daft unser Entschlufl d~n Anhiingern anderer Gebiete der Physik nicht mifi]allen wird, da sie hier Arbeiten finden kSnnen die sich au[ eine Porschungslinie beziehen die heute vielleicht zu modisch ist, aber in denen

hie und da ein neues i~berraschende Resultat oder eine neue Synthese zu finden sein wird, die im stande sind an und J~r sich und mit ihren ~olgen die ganze nat~rliche Phylosophie zu beeinflussen und eine Entsch~idigung ]~r die zahl- reichen (( Variationen i~bere ein Thema... ~ das ihnen wesent~ich schon bekannt
