ssia has actively negotiated and financed the

uilding of the railway between North and Southea. The plan is to reopen the Vladivostok-ongyang section (currently suspended) and offer aect freight route from Seoul to Moscow. This mayr be expanded to carry passenger traffic too.

und 30 per cent of Russian exports travel on the line.

Rudolf Nureyev was born on the Trans-Siberian

near Irkutsk in Siberia, while his mother Farida wastravelling to Vladivostok, where his father Hamat,a Red Army political commissar was stationed.

The Trans-Siberian is longer than the Great Wallof China and US Route 66

The original Trans-Siberian railway was built from

Moscow to Vladivostok on the orders of TsarAlexander III.

At 9,216 km (Moscow-Vladivostok) it is the longestdirect rail route in the world, and entirely withinRussia. The Moscow-Beijing route is shorter,at 9001 km.

The route to Vladivostok was built between 1

1916. The first rivet was ceremonially hammhome by thefuture Nicholas II, the last Tsar. Ucommunist rule he would later be placed undHouse Arrest as a prisoner on board the Trans

The train carries about 20,000 containers perto Europe.

s, we know our trip names are sometimesit over-the-top, but when youre dealingh the largest country on earth (Russia), thegest railway (the Trans-Sib), the biggest lakeikal), the biggest desert (the Gobi) well,en else would superlatives be more apt?

d this is the trip which has it all!e purposely sat down to try to work everygle side trip and exotic activity into onependous itinerary and this is it!ou think of the Trans-Sib as a necklacejewels, stretching from Europe to Asia,n this is the Crown Jewels!

u came on the trip for the train but whatmains afterwards is interactive content withmote communities located far away from the

road, whose lives still remain little changedthe progress it brought.

If you think of the Trans-Sibas a necklace of jewels,

stretching from Europe to Asia, then this is the Crown Jewels!

ryones heard of Outer Mongolia.Inner Mongolia? The names come

m Imperial China. When they conqueredngolia they realised ruling it would be

possible. So the grassland part nearest tojing (the Inner part) they ruled like the restChina, but they gave up once the Gobi washe way, and the Outer part was ruledmartial law. Outer Mongolia is now theependent country of Mongolia - one ofworlds least-visited.

e outstanding feature of this trip, howeverell, except for Lake Baikal, which we haventout!) is Huhehot, the Inner Mongolianital simultaneously a part of China, yet

The trip:Heres a Trans-Sib itinerary that surprised evenus with its success! At its heart is one of ourclassic Mongolia programs and places wherethe majority of the population continue to liveas herders, living in gers (the wood-framedcamel-felt tent) and tending their animals.

As a counterbalance to Mongolias poise andtranquillity, this trip includes a two-day mini-expedition to the last remaining Soviet gulag, not far from Perm. Gulags were always builtin remote areas (obviously) and we leverage

double value by heading into the uninhabitedUrals and returning by raft.

This isnt frenzied white-water, but a leisurelyfloat down the Usva, through amazing sceneryinaccessible by road with camping alongthe way, as youre miles from any inhabitedlocations in the middle of the Ural Mountains!

It starts in Moscow and ends injing so you get the full experience of theond-largest city in Europe and the pulsatingitement of Asias new Olympic city.

eres no Siberian city more emblemic thanutsk and its also the gateway to Lake Baikal.way of complete contrast, the other side-trip

Naadam is the most giganticfestival on the Mongolian calendar -sports-fixture, social event, andfestive feast rolled into one. It falls

just once per year, and crowdsflock from all over the country -so we've roped-off places inhotels and trains in readiness. It's a festival untainted by big-business blandness, but our localteam will work to get you throughthe mayhem to all of the events!

(The events happen simultaneouslyin different places - we aim to getyou to the highlights of each, plus some time to soak-up theatmosphere). Mongolian wrestling, traditional steppe archery (clout-shooting), and horse-racing arethe star events, along with theGrand Parade. Mongolia closes-down for the three days of Naadam,so we've planned our festiveprogramme around that, includingsightseeing timed to catch thingswhen they're open. You canexpect to meet other clients onthis once-only Trans-Sib itinerary.

Lake Baikal in Summer (or snowmobiles innter). And theres always a little shot of vodkahand to warm you up!

s itinerary is neatly balanced, spreading theee en-route side trips quite evenly throughoutjourney, so that you dont have long

broken sections on board the trainl, they might be long in British terms butyre just the twinkling of an eye here!

The Trans-Mongolian rail route takes in theTrans-Siberian (the Trans-Sib, remember, is thepart between the Ural Mountains and Ulan-Uday only... one of the great misunderstoodelements of this rail route!) and then divessouthwards to catch Ulaanbaatar along theway to Beijing.

It was the rail route which built Ulaanbaataras we know it today before the railway, theMongolian capital wasnt even fixed in oneplace, but followed the Royal Court and its

retinue in ger tents around a calendar route ofMongolias Buddhist monasteries. The mostimportant of the monasteries, Gandantegchinlen(or just Gandan in everyday speech) waswhere the Royal Court spent the long, snow-bound winters, and a ger encampment becamesettled around the Gandan the settlement ofUrga (not really a city in the modern sense the sunscorched pasture of Mongolia couldntsupport cities that remained in one placefor long). In fact when Mongolian heroSukhebaatar wanted to enlist Lenins help inoverthrowing the Chinese, he had to ride toMoscow by horse in person (his heroic ridetook just seven days and nights) to do so.The USSR built a railway to its new Asianally (the second country in the world to jointhe great experiment in socialism) a railroute which still links up the three capitalsof Moscow, Ulaanbaatar and Beijing.

This route is ideal for those who have limitedtime but still want to take the rail route andsee something of Mongolia along the way.Ulaanbaatar makes a charming contrast to thehuge megapolises that frame the ends of the

route being around one-tenth the size ofBeijing or Moscow.

The trip:here anyone whose mental picture of Russianns isnt shaped by Strelnikovs train roaringt in the snow, flags flying? If theres one

m famous in the West about Russia, itsctor Zhivago. Yet few realise the Nobelze-winning work was based on a soviet-eranned novel by poet Boris Pasternak.

e majority of the action of the book takesce on and along the Trans-Siberian Railroad.

th this trip weve taken the standardns-Siberian routing and switched the centrenterest round to Perm (a major halt in the

als). This city is the novels setting. Pasternakmself lived in the city for a while and most of

books locations are real places well showu on the city tour.

r trip then heads for Mongolia and finallyBeijing.

The trip:This is the one for the real train fans straightthrough from Moscow to Beijing non-stop, viaManchuria the longest international train

journey in the world (although Moscow-Vladivostok, which isnt international, is stilllonger!). This is more of a land cruise on rails, and although none of the stops are longer thantwenty minutes, you still sense the way thatEurope slowly ebbs into Asia, rather than anabrupt change that happens at a border.

The Trans-Manchurian is the original rail routing

to China, built once again by Russian merchantswho saw the commercial prospects for areliable and fast way of moving Asian goods toEurope for the retail industry (which, strangely,is exactly the way the Russian Government nowviews the future of the Trans-Siberian as air-freight becomes more expensive and discreditedon environmental grounds). The route alsoplayed an important role in the final days of theChinese Empire, as China fractured into two the communists in Beijing, with the Empireand a Japanese-financed rival Governmentin Manchuria.
