Wrangler Adopts New Foam-Dyeing Technology to Save Billions of Liters of Water by Emily Goldman

Posted on November 15, 2017 in News, Sustainability

Indigo Mill Designs (IMD) debuted a foam-dyeing technology, IndigoZero, for denim at the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute of Texas Tech University Tuesday. Denim brands served as early investors for the technology, including Wrangler, Lee and the Walmart Foundation.

IndigoZero purports to reduce overall water and energy usage by more than 90 percent. The foam-dyeing process is also designed to reduce chemical usage while producing equal, or even better, dye quality compared to the typical dye processes. The new technology allows mills to make smaller quantities than the traditional dyeing processes, allowing for waste reduction and smaller fabric runs.

Though both sustainable and cost effective, it was previously difficult to implement for denim because when exposed to oxygen in the air, the dye would affect the classic blue color.

“A large fabric mill uses millions of gallons of water every day to dye denim,” said Sudhakar Puvvada, who leads denim innovation work for Wrangler and Lee’s Global Innovation Center and served as an advisor to IMD. “IMD’s innovation can greatly reduce that amount and cut the energy needed for dyeing and wastewater treatment.”

The technology will be first implemented by Wrangler and Lee suppliers in the U.S. and Mexico, and then rolled out to facilities around the world.

“Wrangler advanced the commercialization of this technology because we believe it has the potential to dramatically improve the environmental impact of our industry and help us achieve our brand goals for water conservation,” said Wrangler Brand President Tom Waldron.

Wrangler projects that if the technology is implemented only by Wrangler and Lee fabric suppliers in the Americas, 8 billion liters of water will be conserved annually, equalling the amount of water used by 70,000 Americans each year. Once adopted by Wrangler and Lee suppliers globally, the impact will more than double.

Gap Advances Fulfillment Operations with Kindred Robots by Genevieve Scarano

Posted on November 14, 2017 in News, Technology

While AI continues to take supply chains to new levels, Gap is stepping up its

fulfillment game with a new fleet of robots.

Kindred, a Canada and U.S.-based robotics startup, is working with Gap and other

major retailers to test Kindred Sort—a warehouse robot—in its fulfillment centers

nationwide.

Developed for use in e-commerce fulfillment centers and retail distribution centers,

Kindred Sort works with fulfillment center employees to quickly put together orders

from batch-picked items. The robot works like an arcade machine claw and can pick

up, bar code scan and sort 250 to 400 times per hour to speed up outbound fulfillment,

inbound receiving, order assembly and store replenishment. Kindred Sort could help

retailers alleviate pressures like labor shortages, online sales growth and supply chain

technology issues.

Major retailers, including Gap, are already piloting Kindred at their fulfillment centers.

Kindred previously signed Gap as a trial customer and the retailer has been testing the

bots at one of its Tennessee-based warehouses, Fortune reported. Gap is reportedly

using the robots to process actual orders and help human staff separate apparel items,

including jeans and shirts, for delivery.

Kindred, which has offices in San-Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver, is having its staff

remotely aid Gap in training the robots’ software for automated operations in the

Tennessee center. Built by Fanuc, a Japanese robotics company, Kindred Sorts’ arm

is powered by Kindred’s custom software. Using the software, Kindred’s employees

control the robots and each time a Kindred employee moves the robotic arm to pick up

a product, the software records the data, so Kindred Sort can eventually operate

without human help. Reinforcement learning and deep learning, AI technologies, also

help the robot remember which items to pick up more gently and learn the location of

their designated drop-off spots.

Kindred’s partnership with Gap follows its recent financial funding. On Oct. 24,

Kindred announced that it raised $28 million in Series B funding led by Tencent, a

China-based internet company, and additional funding from Eclipse Ventures and First

Round Capital—bringing total funding to $44 million. The funding will support the

continued research and development of Kindred’s robots, including Kindred Sort and

enable Kindred to accelerate human-like intelligence in multiple industries.

Tunisia holds forum to attract investment Source: Xinhua| 2017-11-10 13:47:55| Editor: Liu

TUNIS, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- A forum that gathered about 1,500 international investors, entrepreneurs and project promoters was kicked off here Thursday, aiming to help the North African country attract more investment. "Our strong message to foreign investors, through this event, is the fact that Tunisia will remain an attractive economic destination with high competitiveness capabilities," said Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed at the opening ceremony of the "Tunisia Investment 2017" Forum. According to Chahed, Tunisia doubled its growth in one year from 1 percent in 2016 to almost 2.3 percent so far and the growth in 2018 is expected to reach 3 percent. Foreign investments increased by 7 percent during the first 10 months of this year, he added. Tunisian Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Zied Laadhari said certain industrial sectors have great potential for investment, highlighting manufacturing industries, automotive components, aeronautics, pharmaceutical industries, agro-industry, mechanical and electrical industries, and textile-clothing. "We are betting on other sectors including tourism, renewable energy, information and communication technologies. In this context, Tunisia offers significant potential for investors especially in the private sector," Laadhari told Xinhua. "Among the projects envisaged by the Tunisian government in the next five years: a highway that will connect the north with the west-center of Tunisia, inter-provincial express roads, modernization and reconstruction of the rail transport network," said Ridha Saidi, adviser to Chahed
