SR CV 2016 Page 1 of 18 CURRICULUM VITAE OF SHANTI RAMAN Associate Professor Shanti Raman is a Consultant Paediatrician, with sub-specialty training in Community Paediatrics, epidemiology and public health. Her research and teaching interests include health of migrants and refugees, poverty, indigenous child health, child rights and child maltreatment, quality and safety in health, and global maternal, newborn and child health. She is currently the Director of Community Paediatrics -- South Western Sydney, where she is responsible for clinical services in Child Development and Child Protection across the region, providing academic leadership and directing research and training. She is involved with policy development at State, national and international levels promoting a rights-based perspective to child health and population health. Dr Raman maintains a strong interest in global health, provides consultancy services in international maternal, newborn and child health, works on population based research projects in Asia- Pacific and teaches clinical aspects of Child Protection and public health to Paediatricians and health professionals. She has provided policy advice to national governments and global agencies in the Asia-Pacific region in her role at the as the lead in maternal, newborn and child health, Human Resources for Health Knowledge Hub. She is on the Standing Committee of the International Pediatric Association and the Executive Committee of the International Society for Social Pediatrics & Child Health. She is also a member of several working parties for global policy documents in child health and child rights. She has completed a PhD in international maternal and child health at the University of New South Wales- her doctoral dissertation was about socio-cultural factors influencing perinatal health in urban India. Associate Professor Shanti Raman is a Consultant Paediatrician, with sub-specialty training in Community Paediatrics, epidemiology and public health. Achievements:

Set up specific clinics for vulnerable populations in South Western Sydney including for children in out-of home care, indigenous children, children of substance using parents and children of parents with mental illness.

Set up the first paediatric and youth specific refugee health clinics for newly arriving refugees in South Western Sydney.

Led major successful and enduring partnership initiatives, including with Kari Aboriginal Resources Inc, The Benevolent Society and Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation.

Helped produce the district Child Protection Policy and Procedures including clinical practice guidelines for child abuse and neglect, accessible online.

Led major clinical practice improvement strategies including perinatal identification of substance using mothers and their babies in Campbelltown Hospital, clinical assessments of children presenting with physical abuse and/or neglect to frontline clinical services in Sydney and South Western Sydney, review of serious events when child abuse/neglect involved.

Set up collaborative, integrated comprehensive assessment clinics for Aboriginal children in out-of-home-care in Broken Hill and Wilcannia.

Set up a multi-disciplinary child development clinic, partnering with Novita Children’s Services, in Broken Hill, for Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Services.

Feb 2011 – July 2012: Senior Research Fellow-Human Resources for Health Knowledge Hub, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of New South Wales (Part-time consultancy)

Lead for maternal, neonatal and child health projects in Asia Pacific region, funded by AusAID. Managed in-country reproductive and child health projects in Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Laos and Sri Lanka as well as provided strategic advice to AusAID and global partner agencies on human resources and health system issues pertinent to the Asia Pacific region.

Achievements:

Evidence-based policy briefs and discussion documents on health services and health systems planning for reproductive and child health in the Asia-Pacific region.

Developed and implemented Perinatal Mortality Audit systems throughout Fiji, with implications for the Pacific region

Took on leadership role in Australia for the Pacific Society for Reproductive Health

Oct 1998 – Oct 2005: Area Child Health Advisor, Western Sydney Area Health Service (WSAHS), conjoint appointment with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) and affiliated to Sydney University. Responsibilities included strategic planning for Child and Youth Health for WSAHS, coordinating child health services in WSAHS, bringing a public health approach to child and youth health services in WSAHS, liaising

Achievements:

Completed the strategic plan ‘Improving the Health of Children and Youth in Western Sydney, Plan 2010’.

Coordinated the ‘Families First’ strategy for WSAHS, a multi-agency, evidence-based partnership program promoting the wellbeing of children and families in the early years.

Produced a regular Child Health Newsletter for Western Sydney that lists population health initiatives in maternal and child health.

Supervised research projects in community child health, immunisation and public health.

Set up Child and Youth Health services in Daruk Aboriginal Medical Service.

Set up the Health Assessment for Refugee Kids (HARK) Clinic at the CHW.

Employed by BASICS and CARE (India) to provide technical advice and training to the Integrated Nutrition and Health Project. This was a large scale maternal and child health project supported by USAID, delivering an evidence-based early years strategy focusing on community-based newborn care, immunisation and nutrition to a target population of 100 million in eight states in India. Completed a training manual for mid-level health managers and village health workers on community-based newborn care, immunisation and maternal/infant nutrition.
