Tradizions de Gherdëina Le tradizioni della Val Gardena I gardenesi sono un popolo di veri artisti: creatività e ingegnosità sono doti che sono stati donati loro già alla nascita. La curiosità e la voglia di viaggiare hanno portato il popolo montanaro in tutto il mondo, riportando in valle influssi e idee da paesi vicini e lontani. Il linguaggio in Val Gardena non è solamente il ladino, ma anche l’arte: durante le lavorazioni artigianali i gardenesi possono esprimersi e svilupparsi liberamente e dare forma ai propri pensieri – oggi come allora.

Die Traditionen in Gröden Die Grödner sind ein Künstlervolk: Kreativität und Einfallsreichtum wurden ihnen quasi schon in die Wiege gelegt. Neugierde und Reiselust haben die Bergbewohner schon früh in die weite Welt hinaus gebracht, sodass Einflüsse aus verschiedensten Ländern mit ins Tal gebracht wurden. Die Sprache der Grödner ist nicht nur das Ladinische, sondern auch die Kunst: Bei Handwerks-arbeiten können sie sich heute wie schon damals frei entfalten und ihren Gedanken Form und Gestalt verleihen.

Sono famose da secoli in tutto il mondo: le sculture in legno della Val Gardena. Durante i freddi mesi invernali, intere famiglie si dedicavano nei loro soggiorni a scolpire, dando così nuova vita ai pezzi di legno trovati nei boschi circostanti. Quello che all’origine era solo un passatempo, divenne poi un elemento economico di notevole importanza nella piccola valle dolomitica. Al giorno d'oggi, abili artigiani e artisti fanno rivivere questa tradizione, trasformando le loro idee non solo in affascinati sculture tradizionali ma anche in composizioni d'arte moderna.

Weltberühmt sind sie seit Jahrhunderten die Holzschnitzereien aus dem Dolomitental Gröden. Wäh-rend der kalten Wintermonate saßen ganze Familien in ihren warmen Stuben und erzeugten aus kleinen Holzstücken unterschiedliche Figuren, ein Zeitvertreib, der erst später zu einem wichtigen Wirtschaftszweig im Tal wurde. Das handwerkliche Können der Schnitzer ist unverkennbar und bürgt seit jeher von großer Qualität. Die Holzschnitzkunst fasziniert mit traditionellen Werken und mo-dernen Anfertigungen und hat es somit geschafft die kreativen Meisterleistungen dem Lauf der Zeit anzupassen.

The wood carvings from Val Gardena in the Dolomites have been world famous for centuries. During the cold months, whole families breathed new life into little pieces of wood from the surrounding forests in their warm parlours, a pastime that only became an important trade later on. The carpen-ters’ craftsmanship is unmistakeable and has always stood for top quality. The art of wood carving fascinates with its traditional works and modern productions and has therefore managed to adapt the creative masterpieces over the course of time.

Piccole opere d’arte con carattere individuale vengono realizzate dal tornitore Simon Oberbacher. La tornitura del legno è un’arte antichissima, ma per niente antiquata, anzi: attraverso il processo di lavorazione di diverse tipologie di legno, che si distinguono attraverso la loro venatura, la durezza ed il colore, vengono creati oggetti sempre più innovativi. Per la fantasia non ha limiti: ciotole, barattoli e vasi vengono realizzati con grande dedizione, come anche piatti, portacandele e persino paralumi: ogni opera è unica e può raccontare una sua storia.

Kleine Kunstwerke mit individuellem Charakter fertigt Drechsler Simon Oberbacher an. Beim Drech-seln handelt es sich um ein altes Handwerk, das aber keinesfalls altmodisch ist, ganz im Gegenteil: durch die Verwendung verschiedenster Holzarten, die sich in ihrer Maserung, ihrer Härte und Farbe teils stark unterscheiden, wird hier immer wieder Neues und Innovatives erschaffen. Dem Einfalls-reichtum sind keine Grenzen gesetzt: Schalen, Töpfe und Vasen entstehen hier ebenso wie Teller, Blumenübertöpfe und sogar Lampenschirme, jedes Werk ist einmalig und jedes Kunstwerk darf auf eine eigene, unverwechselbare Entstehungsgeschichte zurückblicken.

Wood turner Simon Oberbacher makes little works of art with individual characters. Wood turning is an old craft but definitely not old-fashioned, quite the opposite: by using a whole range of different types of woods that sometimes differ greatly in their grain, hardness and colour, something new and innovative is created time and time again. There are no limits to the imagination: bowls, pots and vases as well as plates, flowerpots and even lampshades are produced here – every work is unique and every work of art can look back on its own distinctive background.

Si racconta che persino la regina del Regno Unito Vittoria II° abbia posseduto una bambola garde-nese. Per la prima volta questo popolare giocattolo in legno fu menzionato nel 1680. Gli scultori locali, che oltre a dominare l’arte dell’intaglio erano anche capaci mercanti, spedivano le bamboline da porti olandesi in Inghilterra ed in America. Questo è anche il motivo per cui il giocattolo venne chiamato „Dutch Doll“. La bambola in legno della Val Gardena scomparve poi per decenni, ma grazie alla ricerca e all’impegno di Judith Sotriffer è stata riportata a nuova vita. Oggi, l’appassionata artista produce pezzi preziosi per grandi e piccini.

Sogar die englische Königin Victoria II. soll als Kind eine Grödner Puppe besessen haben. Erstmals wurde dieses beliebte Holzspielzeug um 1680 erwähnt. Die hiesigen Schnitzer, die nicht nur dieses Kunsthandwerk beherrschten, sondern sich auch als tüchtige Kaufleute auszeichneten, versandten die Puppen von den holländischen Häfen aus nach England und Amerika, weshalb das Spielzeug auch „Dutch Doll“ genannt wurde. Nachdem in Gröden jahrzehntelang keine Gliederpuppen mehr geschnitzt wurden, hat Judith Sotriffer dieses Kunsthandwerk neu entdeckt und fertigt als fleißige und leidenschaftliche Puppenmutter kostbare Exemplare für Jung und Alt an.

Even the English Queen Victoria II is supposed to have had a doll from Val Gardena as a child. This popular wooden toy was mentioned for the first time around 1680. Local carvers who not only mas-tered this craft but were also clever merchants, exported the dolls from Dutch ship ports to England and America, which is why the toy was also called the “Dutch Doll”. With jointed dolls no longer having been made in Val Gardena for decades, Judith Sotriffer has now rediscovered this craft and makes precious models for all ages as a hard-working and passionate doll maker.

Non solo le sculture in legno, ma anche i costumi gardenesi sono conosciuti ben oltre i confini. Ven-gono portati in occasione di processioni, di grandi feste religiose e durante sfilate e cortei come att-razione per i villeggianti. Sono caratterizzati da gonne colorate, pizzi bianchissimi e cinture pesanti. In passato ogni costume folcloristico della Val Gardena rivelava lo stato civile e sociale di uomini e donne. Oggi è un gioiello indossato con molta dignità e tanto orgoglio, che rappresenta un elemento essenziale della cultura gardenese.

Nicht nur die Holzschnitzereien, sondern auch die Grödner Trachten sind weit über die Landesgren-zen hinaus bekannt. Bei Festtagen, Prozessionen und Umzügen dürfen die Besucher die wunder-schönen und kostbaren Gewänder, die von bunten Röcken, Spitzen, Litzen und schweren Gürteln gekennzeichnet sind, aus nächster Nähe bewundern. Früher konnte man von der Tracht den gesell-schaftlichen Status ablesen, heutzutage ist sie ein Schmuckstück, die mit Würde und Stolz getragen wird und einen lebendigen Baustein der Grödner Kultur darstellt.

It’s not just the wood carvings but also Val Gardena’s traditional costume that is famous way bey-ond national borders. Visitors can admire the wonderful, sophisticated garments characterised by colourful skirts, lace, braids and heavy belts up close during festivals, parades and processions. You used to be able to tell someone’s social status from the traditional costume, nowadays it is a deco-ration that is a living part of Val Gardena’s culture worn with dignity and pride.

La lavorazione del tombolo ha origini antichissime. Con il termine “tombolo” si indicano sia il merlet-to creato che anche lo strumento usato per realizzarlo. L’attrezzo da lavoro è costituito da tre parti realizzate interamente in legno. I lavori vengono creati con un filo di cotone molto sottile e utilizzan-do degli appositi fogli, sui quali appare il disegno del pizzo. Per svolgere questo delicato lavoro è richiesta molta abilità, precisione e ovviamente tanta pazienza. Oggi vengono prodotti soprattutto tovaglie, pizzi per camice tradizionali e decorazioni per chiese. Oltre a ciò le merlettaie creano cen-trini, lenzuola, abbigliamento e quadri preziosi.

Klöppeln ist eine im 16. Jahrhundert entstandene Handarbeitstechnik, bei der mittels Klöppel, das sind spindelförmige, aus Holz gefertigte Spulen und dem daran aufgewickelten Garn verschiedenste Spitzen angefertigt werden. Fingerbeweglichkeit ist hier durchaus gefragt, denn beim Drehen und Kreuzen huschen die Fäden sehr rasch und geschickt über die Mustervorlage. Heutzutage verzieren geklöppelte Spitzen vor allem Tischdecken, Dirndlblusen und Kirchentücher. Darüber hinaus können bei der kreativen Geduldsarbeit auch wertvolle Deckchen, Schals, Kleider und gar Kunstkreationen entstehen.

Lace-making is an ancient craft where a whole range of different lace is produced using spindle-shaped wooden bobbins and the yarn wound up on them. Dexterous fingers are definitely called for here as the threads have to very skilfully dart over the pattern sample when turning and cros-sing. Bobbin lace mainly decorate table cloth, Dirndl blouses and church sheets nowadays. Precious blankets, scarves, dresses and even artistic paintings can also be made with this creative labour of patience.

Il costume delle giovani ragazze, che porta il nome di „ghërlanda spiza“, è un vero gioiello amatis-simo e senza eguali nell’arco alpino. I mercanti gardenesi, che giravano il mondo già molti secoli fa, al loro ritorno, regalavano a moglie e figlie pietre pregiate come coralli e graniti. In occasione delle grandi feste, i gioielli venivano e vengono indossati dalle donne. La coroncina, caratteristica delle ragazze nubili, è particolarmente preziosa. Ancora oggi è prodotta meticolosamente a mano ed è ricca di perle, pietre preziose e nastri dorati.

Die Jungmädchentracht „ghërlanda spiza“ ist ein einzigartiges Schmuckstück, welches im gesam-ten Alpenraum wahrhaftig ihresgleichen sucht. Als die tüchtigen Grödner Kaufleute von ihren Rei-sen nach Hause zurück kehrten, brachten diese ihren daheim gebliebenen Ehefrauen und Töchtern als Geschenke edle Korallen und Granitsteine mit. Diese wurden und werden bei Festanlässen als Schmuckstücke getragen. Das kunstvoll gearbeitete Krönchen als Kopfaufsatz der Jungferntracht ist besonders wertvoll: auch heute noch wird es in minuziöser Handarbeit gefertigt und ist reich an Perlen, Edelsteinen und Goldbändern.

The “ghërlanda spiza” young girl’s traditional costume is a very special gem that is truly unparalleled in the entire alpine region. Val Gardena’s smart merchants used to bring back fine corals and garnet gems from their business trips for their women at home, these were worn with great joy by their daughters and wives on special occasions. The artistic little crown is particularly precious as the head wear for the young girl’s traditional costume: it is still produced by hand in minute detail today and has lots of pearls, gemstones and gold bands.

Quando i gardenesi parlano tra di loro, la loro lingua è il ladino. Si tratta di una lingua molto anti-ca, che si affermò probabilmente già nel I. secolo d. C. Anche se spesso viene ritenuta un dialetto, in verità è una vera e propria lingua. Risale ai tempi quando i romani sotto il condottiero Druso s’insediarono nella regione alpina: dalla fusione dell’antica cultura celtica-retica con quella dei ro-mani nacque il Ladino. Circa il 90% della popolazione gardenese appartiene a questo gruppo lingu-istico: è la prova che il ladino è tuttora uno dei capisaldi della cultura locale.

Die Grödner sprechen unter sich Ladinisch, eine sehr alte Sprache, die sich während des ersten Jahrhunderts n. Chr. gebildet hat. Wenngleich man meinen könnte, es sei ein Dialekt, so wird bei näherem Zuhören bald klar, dass es sich um eine eigenständige Sprache handelt. Entstanden ist sie, als die Römer unter dem Feldherrn Drusus den Alpenraum besiedelten und sich die rätische mit der römischen Sprache vermischte. Dass etwa 90% der Grödner Bevölkerung dieser Sprachgruppe an-gehört ist Beweis dafür, dass sie nach wie vor eines der Herzstücke der heimischen Kultur darstellt.

The people of Val Gardena speak Ladin among themselves, a very old language that was formed during the first century AD. Although you might think it is a dialect is soon becomes clear when you listen a bit closer that it is a totally independent language. It came about when the Romans occupied the alpine region under commander Druso and the Raetian language mixed with the Roman langua-ge. The fact that roughly 90% of Val Gardena’s population belongs to this language group is proof that it is still at the heart of the local culture.
