tuttobene’s fifth anniversary! five years ago tuttobene was formed by a group of young designers that joined forces in order to keep costs low and approach a larger audience. and basically this is still the case, as there is a demand for a platform for starting design studios. designers seem to find us easier as tuttobene’s reputation is growing. while making the selection it was clear that the focus on quality became stronger. this shows in our presentation!
FOCUS! is what we do this year, not only on our social or sustainable criteria, but also on what the designers come for: doing business. Thanks to the financial support from the EVD (Dutch Agency for International Business and Cooperation) we have organised a Network Cocktail / Dinner. Specifically invited guests from the design industry will meet the designers in an exclusive setting. Hotel Artemis from Amsterdam will make sure everyone will enjoy a great dinner. Networking is an important element for this presentation and is literally integrated in the design of this newspaper, greatly visualised by the graphic designers Esmée Steur en Loes van Esch.
As you might have noticed, sustainability has become a regular aspect within the design process to deal with, whether it is for legal, idealistic or commercial reasons. It is been spread like a meme*, and as a result the amount of presentations in Milan that promote sustainable design increased. Will the
overall design industry adopt the sustainable trend? Will the commercial interests be still attractive?
What else can you expect at our show this year? • Check out Tuttobene’s underground satellite presentation Focus on Nature in Tuttobene’s wild design jungle, lobby of the Nhow Hotel (see page 53).• Participate for 30 minutes in the SmallSpaceDesignRace design competition (2nd edition) powered by Ahrend (see page 20).• We launch our new design web-shop www.tuttobenedesignshop.com; upload your designs and sell your work worldwide (see page 43).• The Tuttobene Collection expands with a new product: Pit Industry, a glass house designed by Jana Flohr & Frederike Top, the winners of the competition SmallSpaceDesignRace (1st edition) during the Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven (see page 21).
Tuttobene realises the important duty of inspiring the industry with socially, environmentally and commercial sound concepts, whilst functioning as a bridge between young designers and the production and retail industry. Come to Tuttobene’s presentation and see if we succeed!
* A meme is cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that gets transmitted
(like a virus!) verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

tahoua import is a small dutch import organisation that aims at improving the economic situation of its producers and their families in niger. therefore developing the skills of the people in niger as well as introducing elements that go well with European trends has been necessary to ensure an effective and successful partnership. tahoua import gives special support to large groups of women in the north of niger. in addition to pro-ducers in niger, producers in Mali and Burkina-faso are also involved.
in 2008, tahoua import will expand its network to other European countries.
on this paGE: rayon dE solEiltavie offers a unique collection of decorative and functional products, originating from northern niger. a tavie product is made with pas-sion and pride, using the age-old traditional technique of palm leaf weaving. Every tavie product is unique, they are all hand crafted and of the highest quality.crafts are an immensely important
source of income for the touarag tribes of northern niger. accord-ing to the un, niger is a forgot-ten country and the poorest of the world. purchasing a tavie product helps create a better economic situ-ation for the almost 3.000 women who are united in the s.a.a., the local cooperation organising the production. the tavie collection has given them new hope and vitality! all the tavie products are made of young leaves taken from the ‘doum’ palm, a naturally ecological and sustainable material.

carola zee is running her own design company since 2004, developing and producing ceramic products. she is working under her own label but also designs for other labels.
her work in general stands out by her use of graphic decorations in the material and the form of the objects. combining modern production techniques with craftsmanship.
“due to mass production people get an overload on products and gadgets, that follow the
newest hypes, every season. Most consumer articles are cheap and easily replaceable. which leads to more consumption and waste of materials. My personal goal is to create products that are beautiful, unique and can withstand time by giving them personal and exclusive qualities.”
on this paGE: MadE in chinaMade in china (november 2007) is carola’s latest collection and was realised in jingdezhen china. the collection is presented with a book publication, which tells the story of the people behind the
production and shows the way they work. the vases are the end result of this collaboration and show the different techniques typical for this region of china.
Even with the big economical and industrial changes in china at the moment a lot of products here are still produced manually. these products are able to compete with the low prices of machine-produced products because of the low wages the chinese craftsmen get paid. Bycreating this collection carola wants to make consumers aware of the fact that most chinese products
and the people creating them are under valued. through interviews and photographs she shows the amount of work and time that the craftsmen put in to the creation of this collection.

My work represents a world where simplicity sets the tone and a clear communication appears to the users, both in form and function.
Blaowww is mainly working on self-initiated projects; projects concerning furniture and other interior products.
although the designs seem to come from a child’s world, my interior products are developed for adults; products that are inspired by graphic digital images. simplicity and humor, results in a world where there’s room for your own imagination.
on this paGE: trEE sEatErthis chair is inspired by a graphic digital image of a small tree. the height of this object will invite you to sit on it.

design is about objects and peoples feelings. i love it when someone sees my design and smiles, it’s that simple! there is many ways to make others smile, design is my way!it is for me a way of giving a little bit of ‘love’, this while studying form, structure and meaning of objects.
then there is the modest desire to express some positive ethical values with some designs. designing a chair will not create worldwide peace, but there is definitely some ‘space’ to communicate ethical values and even political ideas.
i like this space, and will explore it. using the insight that the light and the serious matters go hand in hand in life.
on this paGE: happy laMpshi, we are happy lamps, we light up your space, and maybe your heart! people love them, their moods are lifted. no seriously guys, that is thething. Making people feel good is giving something. the very fundament of being social. though the lamps are not especially eco-friendly, they are certainly not especially unfriendly.

lidewij: studio for graphics, anima-tion and product design.
the designs are characterised by implicity and contain a spot of humour.rixxt: studio for concepts and product design. the designs are often inspired by graphic design and crafts. they are fresh, tactile and playful.

Editorial
just imagine: you live in holland, a country in the middle of Europe known for its clouds and rainy weather. But you designed a spectacular bed with an integrated cooling system, which ensures a sensational cool sleeping experience without the usual energy-consuming air conditioner.
It is a perfect solution for environment-conscious consumers in countries with a warm climate. People in such countries -a lot of them in the Spanish-speaking areas of the world- are a great potential market and an interesting business opportunity. How can we bring the two together?
FLOOV Visionary Design, launched during the month of Dutch Design in March 2008, is a Madrid based online publication (www.floov.net) that wants to form a bridge between the non-Spanish-speaking with the Spanish-speaking world for products and ideas that promote sustainable design. How? Through articles, presentations and events it wants to link experts and leaders of the governmental, educational and business sectors on the one hand and the creative industry on the other. Many initiatives are developed in one part of the world, while there is a demand in inter-esting markets in Spain and Latin America.
FLOOV founder-director Luis Bohorquez: FLOOV Visionary Design promotes a new kind of thinking in the creative process. Why? “Today, people want the environmental impact to be important in the way products are designed. For instance, they want to have information about the kind of materials that are used and what the impact can be on their health as well as on the environment.” And that means of course that the design process also has to take into account to control the social impact of the way the product is produced, distributed and sold. “I think a visionary designer needs to commit himself from the very beginning, to create a new generation of products that have their benefits for the environment and promote wellness and satisfaction with economic value and sustainable justice for the global society.”
Bohorquez wants to direct FLOOV at design students and researchers in a broad field: from architecture to industrial_graphic_interior design, crafts and engineering. He also wants to make Floov Visionary Design a platform for professionals and experts in all areas of design, r&D and business. “I believe in exchanging knowledge and experience as the only way to cre-ate new business opportunities with a sustainable approach.”
The website offers its content for free. The design of the web is fresh, clear, direct and collaborative to benefit the participants. “We hope to attract visionary experts and researchers, design academics and business man as well as governmental institutions to participate as providers of content or as sponsors. Also, we offer our platform to students to present their projects or to cooperate doing graphic content. This network of international contacts will be useful for everyone who promotes the value of innovation and visionary design.”
Bohorquez: “Don’t wait for the future; Visionary Design starts today.”

designing starts from an atmo-sphere, a history, a material or a technique. design, pure and honest. fragile but strong in character forms the distinct signature noticeable in all designs. the focus lies on the purpose, the applicability of the object and the visual enrichment in form. fare trade and proper design are no conflicting values. the studio supports different development projects. for this purpose the foun-dation design 4 development was founded in december 2007. the studio, specialises in custom-made designs and produces the home labels Celia Suzanne Sluijter and Xo+; objects with an aim.

celia launched the tapis jardin col-lection in 2005 in co-operation with nepal. the carpet production with a fair focus was a new way of think-ing in ‘design‘ carpets. the production company was founded and built up by a tibetan refuge and is now in its second gen-eration. the collection is support-ing fair business improvement and the awareness of old techniques and natural materials. the business improvement has a social and pov-erty alleviation target.

studio Mdfd, develops multi-func-tional furniture that can be adapted to our ever-changing needs. people change, tastes change, and in the wake of this change most furniture is replaced, but in this process a lot of resources are wasted. that’s why studio Mdfd offers flexible furni-ture designs, which can be modified according to changing lifestyles. the core structure of the furniture remains intact, while the general look and feel of a piece can be modified endlessly.
studio Mdfd furniture will last a lifetime of change. it is this unique design characteristic which makes studio Mdfd a sustainable design practice.
on this paGE: dEKastdeKast is a modular shelving system, which can be designed and assem-bled according to your personal taste and specific needs. deKast offers the possibility to display and combine a wide range of rich and decorative fabrics. studio Mdfd
provides a growing collection of exclusive fabrics for use on the front panels of deKast.
the structure of the deKast shelving system is made from high quality, long lasting plywood. fabrics such as cotton and wool are the basic materials used to give deKast its unique finish.deKast appeals to our creativity. deKast invites its owner to change its look, simply by altering the composition of the structure, and
replacing the fabric mounted front panels. this creates a strong rela-tionship between deKast and its user. a product that is made to last a lifetime without ever looking dated is a truly sustainable product.

Studio VonK &janneKe hooyManstudio petra Vonk produces innovative fabric design for interior and fashion. our specialty is the synthesis of innovation and tradition in knitted fabrics.
janneke hooyman operates in a wide range of fields, from jewellery design up to interior design. the key of their activities is a conceptual approach to all projects: a great story is the starting point.
the recently established cooperation Vonk-hooymans exists next to our activities as textile designer and product-interior designer. our expertise is united in this project which will be the starting point for a whole new range of products, examining the possibilities of knits in product design.
on this paGE: poofstretch your knits to the max!4 layers of knitted fabric shape the
pillows into this poof.fabrics are used in a totally different manner they were originally meant for. delicate mohair combined with high-tech knitted elastics hooked to a robust steel base.
the design combines both natural and high-tech materials and is produced in the netherlands which will result in reviving the local craft of knitting. we would like to make use of the remaining textile industry
to produce and develop new utilisations in knitting, to retain and further explore this know-ledge.

dutch designer christien Meindertsma (1980) lives and works in rotterdam. under her own label flocKs she designs clothes as well as interior objects – cardigans knitted from the wool of a single sheep and rugs from a whole flock. her latest project is a photo book called piG 05049, a catalogue showing all the products that are made from a single pig; from por-celain to bullets, from shampoo to
washing powder. she has a great interest in reconnecting end products to their raw materials.
on this paGE: urchin‘urchin’ is a hand-knitted woolen pouf, carrying an id tag showing the breed of sheep that provided the wool. the urchin pouf will be presented in a ‘flock’ of various sizes and colors.the urchins are part of a collection
of products entitled flocKs. the main interest of flocKs is to show the origin of raw materials that are used as well as producing products as locally as possible. all flocKs products come with a passport showing a photograph of the sort of animal the product came from as well as information about where it was made. for example, the crossbred sheep that provide for the urchin wool graze in open fields in
new zealand. once the sheep are shorn the wool is exported to the netherlands where it is spun, dyed and hand-knitted.

Britta teleman studied traditional product design at central saint Martins in london, but soon found her way into a more concept-based design via internships with front and droog design. she takes her starting points in themes or statements, such as ‘taboo’, ‘contour’ or ‘babies are accessories’. sustainability is a given factor in everything she does.
on this paGE: and My BaBy GoEs so wEll with it!‘and my baby goes so well with it!’ is a lightweight Moses basket for when the baby is still too small for a bed. in response to the growing trend of sustainable parenting, all materials are renewable, recycled or organic and come together in a stylish product.the starting point for this project
was to make a sustainable product for babies. Because baby products are becoming like status symbols, and parents want to show off their environmental awareness, this needs to show in the product. i believe that the shorter the life of the product, the smaller the ecological footprint should be.a Moses basket is only needed for a few months, and should therefore
be made as environmentally friendly as possible. as it comes flat-packed, transports are minimised too.

Experimenta o campo is an artis-tic residence that seeks the devel-opment of new designs for artisans of different crafts, from weaving to basketry or tin work, in order to develop their material offer and its economic value.
on this paGE: hot pot BasE towEllinen is a traditional noble towel material that breaks with the conventional by allowing a hot kitchen pot to come to the noble dinner ceremony.this design is manufactured with
a traditional loom in a sustainable handmade process by female artisans. it makes use of handmade linen and felt, both natural mate-rials and transformed in a sustain-able manufacturing process with the objective of developing of the traditional arts and crafts.

studiofriso finds the adaptation of a product just as important as it’s function, appearance and cleverness. the product never goes without a user and it’s perceptions, or a surrounding and it’s conditions. all these elements change rapidly under the influence of each other and make sure new products can be born.
on this paGE: MonochroME sturdythe Monochrome sturdy is made of two aluminum sand cast parts. it is intended for the chair to look more faded by the oxidation pro-cess, which, over time, will take place naturally.Monochromes is a collection for out- en indoor use, inspired by garden furniture surrounding
coffee kiosks in parks. it uses an oxidisation process to give the product its distinctive color and to preserve the metal from corroding.when used outside the patina will be an ongoing process resulting in a slow change of color and appearance. Monochromes are made by a single material, a single technique and ‘finished-to-age’ in a single color.

Stephan SieperMannstephan siepermann graduated at the design academy Eindhoven in 2005. he started his own studio in utrecht (the netherlands) where he creates furniture concepts and interior products. searching for new applications, constructions and images he works with a variety of materials and techniques.
on this paGE: lEaft’ wall laMpan atmospheric wall lamp using cast plastic leafs mounted to the wall in a branch shape. available with a different quantity of leaves.the work of stephan siepermann can be often described as a surprising transformation of the used materials. he uses to upgrade common or unusual materials
and parts into high-end furniture components. By this he tries to keep them away from the cycles of re-cycling and down-cycling, the so called out-cycling.

design as a tool to tackle social and environmental degradation in public square, Milan.
Several public meeting areas in Milan are witnessing social and environmental degradation. It is a common problem for many metropolis. The Colonne di San Lorenzo is one of such areas situated in Corso di Porta Ticinese in Milan; it has a strategic position that is easy to reach. The area is a fashionable place where pubs, bars and restaurants surround a roman monument consisting of ten columns in front of the Basilica di San Lorenzo.
In June last year the social and environmental degradation reached a critical point. The area residents complained about the hundreds of beverage bottles and glasses left and broken. The city mayor decided to implement several experimental measures to support the residents and protect the monumental site. For example; after 9:00 pm from the 6th of June to 31st of July all pubs and bars in the area were only allowed to sell drinks in plastic cups. Another measure involved closing the whole monumental area with metal barriers from 7:00 pm until 7:00 am. Unfortunately, the mayor’s measures failed. Instead of resolving the problem frequent visitors to the area retaliated, organising several specific protests against the mayor’s decisions.
“Beer Bottles nei luoghi pubblici” is an international design competition with the objective of developing independent creative solutions for the problem. All stakeholders representative of the phases in the product’s life cycle should form part of the solution. This includes; bars, pubs, beverages local tradesmen, beverages street traders, area residents, and the groups of consumers. The design problem should be resolved from a sustainable point of view. Designers are asked to develop creative solutions considering both minor environmental impact and major social appreciation and satisfaction. All submitted projects will be included and discussed in a research report and published on the competition website www.o2italia.org.
The research and design competition are a collaboration between O2 Italia, the local Italian group of O2 global Network and Co-Creando, a research and design consultancy based in Milan. The Design competition will be launched in April as part of ‘System reload’ an event that will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of O2 global Network. This event will occur during Milan Design Week in the Nhow Hotel in Via Tortona 35, with the jury members are experts in social and environmental sustainability. The winner of the competition will be offered a free exhibition space and all the travel and journey expenses required to participate in Milan Design Week 2009.

groene hondenthe ‘Groene honden, jong ontwerp’ foundation is a platform that has been established by recently gradu-ated designers. the ‘Groene honden’ (Green dogs) joined forces to gener-ate exposure for new dutch design. this platform aims to reintroduce creativity and playfulness into the dutch design community by ques-tioning all existing boundaries of ‘design’. the strength of the ‘Groene honden, jong ontwerp’ foundation lies in their interdisciplinary collaboration. sharing knowledge and experience makes it possible to achieve higher goals. the foundation is involved in a wide range of activities; from designing new products and orga-nizing exhibitions to expose young design, to organizing lectures and design tours.

in the search for a stage for his enormous fantasy and enthusiasm, the dutch architect/designer sander Bokkinga started in 2006 with Bok.. Bok. is fascinating and wondering himself about the existing world around him.Because of that Bok. is using existing traditional products and materials to design new surprising functional objects. the new objects are mainly meant as furniture and accessoirie for interior and exterior use.
on this paGE: BoK.hosEpipE furniturEBoK.hosEpipE furniture is a furniture concept made of old and new hosepipes. the first series contains a chair, a floor-lamp and a stool. Each object is handmade by Bok. the furniture is for interior and exterior use. and the water can still going through the objects! a water-cooled chair! Bok. wants to make the world nicer and little better. sustainability and
social responsibility are important components of the Bok.vision. Bok. wants to make the world aware of the beautiful things around us by using or reusing existing products or materials in a different, smarter and funnier way. Bok. wants to stop the race of better and more. quality instead of quantity. the new objects are always functional, not complex, with durable pure materials and easy to recycle or reuse. all Bok.
objects are produced in holland by Bok. or in cooperation with local factories.

alon alex groSSin my work i aim to combine technology and sustainability, which allow for the creation of objects and devices that highlight new possibilities and harbor new technologies. the goal is to use these object to pass on a story, so the viewers can open up and appreciate alternative ecological and technological ideas. this in turn will influence and per-haps change their perception of ecological problems that affect our environment.
on this paGE: autoMatEd dEw/rain collEctor flour for doMEstic usEa technological based object, which allows a sustainable automated process to collect dew/rain drops relying on information that is being gathered by censors or being pulled out from the world wide web via network connection. the device could be positioned next to a window, rooftop or in the garden.fog harvesting and dew collection are ancient methods for producing
drinking water. in an era where natural resources like pure drinking water are becoming scarce in many undeveloped countries, the role of design becomes important to pass on ecological and economical ideas that could hopefully contribute for finding solutions for water short-ages. By presenting the fog and dew collector devices i strive to raise awareness to alternative production possibilities for water in areas where water supply is limited or doesn’t exist either because of
weather conditions or because the lack of suitable funds to supply drinking water.

KrEjci stands for strong, urban, high quality design with an attitude. an attitude that is asking you to think, that is encouraging you to question what we are used to. an attitude that wants you to talk back!
on this paGE: taKashitakashi is the latest design of a shoulder bag from the classic tubus collection of KrEjci, an elegant, easy to use bag with a simple design. it is made from old bicycle inner tubes and felt.
the bags are made from recycled material in small social workplaces in warsaw/poland and Berlin/Germany.

elena KhurtoVai am interested in the emotional meaning of things, i create new images that provoke thinking about the value of the contemporary environment and the way people use it. My general subject is to question how people relate to design.
on this paGE: conVErsation cupstwo connected cups enhance the moment of interaction between two friends. you can’t drink at the same moment; you must first wait for your friend to have a drink. there are versions for left handed, right handed and mixed couples.conversation cups provoke
interaction, interactive experience is a new important function.
it’s goal is to introduce under-standings of our relationships and bring back common values for things like respect and taking care of each other instead of fulfilling never-ending desire of consumerism.

eVelienwith the main focus on interior and furniture design, Evelien designs the antique of the future. inspired by the old cabinet-makers she combines quality materials and construction to create products that will exist for another hundred year.
respecting the work of nature while combining this with surprising solutions.
on this paGE: sEcrEtairEthis secretaire is a reaction to the inefficient use of materials in the
furniture industry. without any loss of wood this secretaire is cut out of a single piece of oak wood.
this piece of furniture is because of its efficient use of materials highly environmentally conscious.
