ROCCO BUSINESS AWARDS 2015 3

President’s Welcome

The decision making process was, as it always is, incredibly tough, with the quality of applications yet again of a very high standard. The volume of applications this year reached a new ROCCO high of over 110. Congratulations to everyone who entered as you all had a positive story to share. For those of you who did not make the shortlist, we hope you will try again next year. I wish to thank all the 34 judges who gave up their time to judge the entries and to attend the presentations from the shortlisted companies. The judging process is intense and the contribution of these volunteers is invaluable. In addition I wish to thank all our sponsors for their support, as without

it the ROCCO’s would not be possible. Our sponsors in common with your Chamber are genuinely committed to the promotion of Business excellence in Renfrewshire. The ROCCO’s is a night of celebration, so please enjoy yourself and let’s collectively celebrate the contribution we have all made in helping Renfrewshire grow & prosper.

Audrey Cumberford, President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce

On behalf of the Board of directors, management and staff, welcome to the ROCCO’s 2015, the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

We are here tonight to celebrate business excellence in Renfrewshire, with the ROCCO’s: the annual business awards of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, now in their 12th year. Of the many events we hold each year, this is our premier event and the largest business black tie dinner in Renfrewshire. Companies know that by gaining recognition for their hard work they can further benefit their business. Winning a ROCCO is a great achievement.

Principal Sponsor’s Welcome

Housing, education, health, welfare and general support for our soldiers, sailors, air personnel and marines is essential. Across Scotland that support is provided, without exception, by supportive local authorities and health boards.

Alongside that covenant we need the business world. Our reservists, cadet adult volunteers, veterans and spouses will all, at some stage in their life, work with a wide variety of companies across the United Kingdom. It is vital for them, defence and the wider community that a good working relationship exists.

It is a huge privilege for us to be here amongst you tonight and to sponsor this years ROCCO awards. British commerce produces some of the best leaders and entrepreneurs in the world and clearly some of those being recognised tonight will go on to much greater things as their businesses grow & prosper.

We hope that you all have an enjoyable evening and wish every member of the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce success in the future.

Defence Relationship Management.

Your Armed Forces are undergoing considerable change, in order to address the challenges, the United Kingdom faces both now and in the future. We are very aware that we can only succeed, in partnership with the society that we seek to defend.

Audrey Cumberford, Chamber President with Colin Vooght, Regional SaBRE Campaign Director

Host & Entertainment

- Fred MacAulay

Fred MacAulay has been entertaining the people of Scotland, and further afield, for nearly three decades. Leaving the business world where he had worked as an Accountant and Company Secretary he found fame as a comedian and has enjoyed success on stage, radio and television. Numerous appearances on television panel shows such as Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week and QI alongside radio comedy shows including The Newsquiz, Just A Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue established Fred as one of the most sought after comedians in the UK. Still remembered fondly for his television chat show series with Ally McCoist, Fred will shortly complete an extensive tour of England with his show "TwentyFifteen" and will be back on the road in the UK in 2016 with his Live stand-up show. It's been a big year for Fred, moving on from Radio after nearly 18 years, but he's delighted to be back hosting the ROCCO Awards. Said Fred " I'm delighted." :)

Hoolahan SlidesHoolahan Guitar Slides provides solutions for amateur and professional guitar players. The guitar slide developed by Phil Hoolahan is the only full length slide that completely gives you the freedom of all four fingers plus be able to play slide at will without any adjustment. After creating the perfect guitar slide Hoolahan Guitar Slides has developed Hoolatune, the only mechanical patent protected alternate tuning system that supersedes all its expensive rivals. As a guitarist Phil loved the idea of being able to switch between standard tuning and open G tuning. With all other products the time delay between dialling in the tuning and waiting on the machine head motors to digitally tune the guitar is too long especially playing live when it can’t be changed. Hoolatune solves this problem with instant switching between tunings. According to the Yamaha market report “Accelerating Growth of Musical Instruments Business” (Nov, 2010), the guitar and drum market is estimated at £1.8 billion. More ground breaking products are in development.

Finalists The Paisley Daily Express has been serving the Renfrewshire community since 1874.

Over the decades, the paper has been through countless changes and seen politicians, council leaders and provosts come and go - but we are still here.

The Express has, proudly, always been seen as a champion of the community it serves and its journalists have never shied away from taking on tough subjects.

Over time, we have campaigned for changes in knife crime sentencing, teamed up with the NHS on an award-winning campaign to encourage people to stop smoking and also took a great risk with our shop-a-dealer anti-drugs initiative.

We also devoted great resources to helping St Vincent’s Hospice, in Howwood, aiming to raise £1million in a calendar year - and, very proudly, succeeded.

As well as tackling the big issues of the day, our job is to supply people with the information they need on issues ... no matter how small.

Our readers are the most important people to us and we are always happy to investigate any genuine concerns they raise, support their charity efforts and send our photographer to their community events.

Currently, times are tough for newspapers and we at the Express feel we have adapted well to social media, online content and changing technology without losing sight of the fact that our readers must come first.

We are honoured to sponsor the Rocco Award for Renfrewshire’s Favourite Business and to be more involved in Renfrewshire’s highly-respected annual business Oscars.

Cheryl McEvoy, Editor, Paisley Daily

ROCCO Award for Family Business of the Year

18 ROCCO BUSINESS AWARDS 2015

FinalistsThe Malcolm Group is arguably one of the UK’s leading providers of third-party logistics, construction and vehicle maintenance services.

Originating as a family-owned business in the Renfrewshire area back in the 1920’s, it’s safe to say The Group’s operations have grown substantially.

From its beginnings with assets of only a single horse and cart used to transport coal around the Johnstone area, not only has The Group expanded in terms of the services offered but also in its scale of operations which are now throughout the whole of the UK.

It was the hard work and strategic investment in vehicles, plant and depots by Donald Malcolm that brought the business to what we know today.

Starting life as a private company, The Group went on to enjoy forty-five successful years in the ‘public’ domain before ownership was once again with the Malcolm family.

Today, the company is run by Donald’s two sons, Andrew and Walter, who along with their team of 2,000 staff continue to

see the business grow and develop.

Over the years, The Group has achieved much success and remains a forward-thinking organisation throughout its divisions but is proud to have preserved its heritage, in maintaining a personalised and hands-on management approach which is unique to any family-run business.

The destination that is intu Braehead brings people, jobs and wealth to Renfrewshire.

It is more than just a shopping centre, as since it was opened in 1999, has acted as a catalyst for the creation of one of Scotland’s top leisure attractions with Soar at intu Braehead; retail, park, new homes, hotels, office premises and business space.

The benefit to the local economy is £146 million every year with intu Braehead bringing 6,780 direct jobs - nine per cent of everyone employed in Renfrewshire – paying £88 million in wages every year.

This money - The intu Braehead Pound – can then be spent by the wage earners throughout Renfrewshire, supporting other shops and businesses in towns and villages locally. The regeneration of the River Clyde from King George V Dock to the Renfrew Ferry that we see now was sparked by intu Braehead and the huge private investment that has gone into creating such a retail, leisure, residential and business destination.

In the past 15 years we have seen huge economic growth, all this on land that was once derelict and unused. intu Braehead is a success story for Renfrewshire having created a mixed-use development that attracts millions of people to the area every year. What goes on at intu Braehead is the giant magnet for people from outside Renfrewshire that other towns and villages locally can feed off by providing complementary attractions in retail and leisure.

The Kintyre Base is a local authority alternative education provision established in 1995, based within Linwood High School for young people from across Renfrewshire who have additional support needs specifically social and emotional needs.

The base offers a secure nurturing environment with small group teaching and support to encourage attendance and re engagement in education. The young people who attend the Kintyre Base (currently 15) also take part in an outdoor education programme; activities like climbing, hiking & canoeing positively reinforce their ability to achieve success and cope in situations they are unfamiliar and help develop their independence. These activities promote employability skills like cooperation and team work which they have missed by being out of mainstream school. Additional funding will enable purchase of much needed new outdoor kit, clothing and help with travel costs.
