Fundamental activity
to provide attractive, long-term funding to support excellent investigators and their research teams to pursue ground-breaking, high-gain/ high-risk research.
Research funded by the ERC is expected to lead to advances at the frontiers of knowledge and to set a clear and inspirational target for frontier research across Europe.
Pathfinding Europe's technological future
"Future and emerging technologies shall support collaborative research in order to extend Europe’s capacity for advanced and paradigm-changing innovation. It shall foster scientific collaboration across disciplines on radically new, high-risk ideas and accelerate development of the most promising emerging areas of science and technology as well as the Union wide structuring of the corresponding scientific communities."
FET in Horizon2020

Research fields are freely chosen by the applicants, except:
• research activity aiming at human cloning for reproductive purposes
• research activity intended to modify the genetic heritage of human beings which could make such changes heritable
• research activities intended to create human embryos solely for the purpose of research or for the purpose of stem cell procurement, including by means of somatic cell nuclear transfer
• areas of research covered by the EURATOM Treaty
[Bottom-up approach]
[Mobility rule]
At the time of the relevant deadline for submission of proposals, or recruitment/secondment by the host organisation, depending on the action, researchers shall not have resided or carried out their main activity (work , studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
Industrial leadership
Why:
• Strategic investments in key technologies (e.g. advanced manufacturing, micro-electronics) underpin innovation across existing and emerging sectors
• Europe needs to attract more private investment in research and innovation
• Europe needs more innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to create growth and jobs

What are the KETs?Key Enabling Technologies
The Commission defines KETs as “knowledgeintensive and associated with high R&D intensity, rapid innovation cycles, high capital expenditureand highly skilled employment. They enableprocess, goods and service innovation throughoutthe economy and are of systemic relevance. Theyare multidisciplinary, cutting across manytechnology areas with a trend towardsconvergence and integration. KETs can assisttechnology leaders in other fields to capitalise ontheir research efforts”

• Access to Risk Finance - Under the 'Industrial Leadership' pillar, this specificobjective will help companies and other types of organisation engaged inresearch and innovation (R&I) to gain easier access, via financial instruments,to loans, guarantees, counter-guarantees and hybrid, mezzanine and equityfinance.
• Innovation in SMEs - Horizon 2020 actively supports SMEs by providing bothdirect financial support, and indirect support to increase their innovationcapacity. 'Innovation in SMEs' aims at creating a bridge between the core ofthe framework programme - support to research, development and innovationprojects - and the creation of a favourable ecosystem for SME innovation andgrowth.
Industrial Leadership/2
Societal challenges
Why:
• Concerns of citizens and society/EU policy objectives (climate, environment, energy, transport, etc) cannot be achieved without innovation
• Breakthrough solutions come from multi-disciplinary collaborations, including social sciences & humanities
• Promising solutions need to be tested, demonstrated and scaled up
