Brief description of the software HAVE PHUN

Free multiplatform (Windows, Linux, OSX), in Italian, a simulatingphysics playground explaining the laws of Physics with a selection of

tools to draw and animate realistic or fantastic machines.Phun, in which the word “fun” is combined with Physics was developed in

a Swedish university as a thesis for a master course and is anapplication for creating 2D simulations of physics. It has a cartoony feelto it and is simple and fun to use. You can design anything, from a brick

falling from above to a kite conveyor belt.The software offers a series of simple drawing tools and many others to

be discovered while playing.Thanks to the simulator, rotating pins can be easily set inside any shape,objects can be pasted together and shapes can be liquefied inside others

(by simulating the action of liquids).

To make physics fun. Even though Phun certainly can do "falling bricks"it can also do a lot more.To promote interest in science and technology among kids, youth,

students and most likely adults too...A high level of interactivity and a simple and efficient interface that

encourages creativity and exploration (this is why 2D was chosen over

3D) rather than efficiency and usage patterns influenced by the toolTo enable learning using a constructionist approach, pretty much likeNetlogo for complex systems

To use fast and stable cutting-edge methods for multi-physics simulationand solvers (i.e. Phun is also used for testing and developing new

simulation methods and to produce scientific results)

Future work will include lots of added functionality and optimization, on-line repositories of simulation components and scenes.

This free open-source, cross-platform 2D physics simulator, makes youwant to pick up blocks, or maybe crayons, and learn more about the way

things fall and move under pressure and concepts of restitution andfriction.

For example, three little sticks, two wheels and a pulley can be turnedinto an engine; two rotating blades can bring water to a mill; two

suspended chains can hold up free-falling objects, towers of bricks cansupport a structure or collapse to the ground. Personalised colours and

scenes can be added to the page

Interface

The interface is made of several panels and the menus supply tools andcontrols.

The Phun page is a screen with 27 buttons on it. The top bar is the menubar, and gives access to open other bars and controls. The bar

underneath that bar, is the sim control bar. As the name suggests, itcontrols the simulation (starting, stopping, undo, redo, etc...) Then

there's another bar, which is called the tool bar that displays the sketchtool, brush tool, box tool etc.. to use for creating the simulation (e.g. to

build a brick tower and then make it collapse)

Style

The cartoon style makes it easy also for the youngest, even if thecomplexity of some controls could present more than one problem for those who are not old enough to conceive and organise a working

machine.In this case, parents could help by drawing the scenes, starting from a

few simple constructions to be then demolished to more complex

simulations. Operating an engine is not difficult (from the menu oneselects a pin and decides the engine speed), but making it work inside amore complex structure is another story.

Just like Crayon Physics and Soup Toys, with Phun it is easy to inventinfinite planes, wheels, chains, objects and automatic or manual engines.

Let’s go!

When getting started with Phun for the first time, one must remember

that objects fall downwards owing to gravity. Therefore, if you want todraw/invent a structure, either appropriate supports should be built or avirtual screen should fix to the sky all that is not supposed to move, while

the animation should be put on “pause”, otherwise the shapes wouldinevitably fall downwards producing quite a lot of frustration.

Once the scenes have been fixed the simulation and animation may

continue.
