This Week’s Events

Dear Parish Family, We are celebrating the Labor Day weekend honoring the Labor Movement and those who work to build our community and provide for their family. While not a part of

the national celebration, it could be a great time to reflect on the work of the Church and our Lord’s call for laborers for the mission. One reasons we have a parish church is to be the place for the laborers, those who are baptized, to gather to refresh and rejuvenate themselves for the work ahead. The Scriptures and the Eucharist we celebrate should be feeding us and helping us to grow as the laborers of our Lord. The Pastoral Council of the parish has been working through the Diocesan Pastoral Plan that was promulgated in May of 2015. The Diocesan Pastoral Plan is an outline and guide for each parish to form their own pastoral plan, to strengthen each parish for the mission of evangelization. Some might see it only as a way to address the reduced number of clergy and to keep parishes open. While that might be a side effect of evangelization and a beneficial side effect at that, it really is about creating strong and health parishes that can truly serve God. We are attempting to implement the pastoral plan with the formation of our parish commissions and setting new sets of goals and objectives. This will be a way to facilitate the involvement of as many people as possible in whatever way might be possible for the various ages, abilities and availabilities of our parishioners. Ideally we work on these things because we are answering the call of our baptismal promise to help Jesus spread the good news of the Gospel. In reality we work on these things because the number of priests to serve our parishes is declining and there are many things lay people can do in parish leadership and ministry. Keep your eyes, ears, hearts and minds attentive and open in the weeks and months to follow. We will be talking about our Parish Commissions and our Parish Pastoral Plan. We will be asking for your involvement or at the very least your support. Wishing you an enjoyable Labor Day, may it be a time of rest, refreshment, and also reflection on the work that our Lord has waiting for us.

Your brother in Christ, Fr. Tom

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE—Today’s Gospel is clear: Commitment to another involves sacrifice. Before we accept a commitment such as marriage or parenting, we must plan carefully like the king in today’s Gospel. These are serious commitments which demand complete self-giving and are not for the faint hearted or selfish.

THE CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a catechetical program for children ages 3-12 years. It started in Rome, Italy in 1954 and has spread throughout the world. It is designed to help children nurture their relationship with Jesus and learn about the Catholic faith in a developmentally appropriate way. It is based on the educational principles of Maria Montessori, Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the spiritual needs of the child. It is a reflective-

based formation process that allows children to grow in their relationship with God within a sensorially rich environment called an atrium. In the atrium children and catechists listen together to the Word of God and reflect on the presence of Jesus in our lives and the life of the Church. If you know of any families who would like to participate in our program, please direct them to our website for more information or have them contact Anne Marie in the church office.

Opening the Door to the Joy of Mercy

Do you ever feel lost or alone? Have you ever felt you were missing something?

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the process of becoming a Catholic. In the RCIA process inquirers enter into an extended time of formation in which they discern and welcome God's invitation to

embrace life in the Catholic Christian community. During this process of initiation a person grows in knowledge of the teachings of the Church, explores the meaning of the Scriptures for daily life, develops

friendships with members of the parish community, learns to pray and worship in the Catholic tradition, and discovers the joy of serving others.

For more information about the RCIA process or to speak to a team member please contact: Roberta Muoio at 330-452-9539 or [email protected].

The door is a liminal space where we move from one place to another. Thus, it is a sign of our conversion, of letting go of our old way of life and entering a new way of life in Christ. Whenever we walk through the Church doors, we remind ourselves that we have been changed to become more like Christ and daily we are

called to change our lives that we may serve others in the name of Christ. Here, we enter into the Church to find and know God’s mercy, love and care. Every need is filled when you walk through the doors. We invite you to come in, you are always

welcome home!

Matthew 8:20

A Little Flower Parish Ministry

Matthew 8:20 is a ministry born out of the Catholic Worker Movement founded by Dorothy Day. Their concern is to serve Christ in the poor and homeless. To this end, volunteers make a hot meal and bring a trailer full of clothing items to the homeless in downtown Canton every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. At the end of this month, Deacon Chris Germak will speak to us about their mission and what they have done to bring dignity to many homeless. In cooperation with Little Flower Parish, we offer this opportunity to serve…

WHAT DOES MERCY DO? MERCY GETS ITS HANDS DIRTY….

We will volunteer with Matthew 8:20 on Friday, Sept. 16 To help feed and clothe the homeless in Downtown

Canton. We need 10 volunteers. Are you called to serve? You can call the office and leave

your name with Kelli or Michele, or you can sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway.
