VOIDING (AND BOWEL) ABNORMALITIES IN CHILDREN WITH UTI
J Urol 2011 May
Hong YK
Urodynamic abnormalities in toilet trained children with primary vesicoureteral reflux.
Numerous studies have shown that uncorrected voiding disorders will
negatively impact spontaneous resolution rates of reflux, increase the risk
of developing UTIs, and increase the chances of surgical failure for VUR
…stringent evaluation for voiding and bowel dysfunction. The
evaluation is based upon an accurate history and physical examination
supplemented by ultrasound and noninvasive uroflowmetry.
NON-SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF PEDIATRIC UTI
World J Urol. 2011 May 26.
Yang SS, Chiang IN
Advances in non-surgical treatments for urinary tract infections in children.
• behavioral modification (timed voiding and adequate fluids intake)
• nutrient supplements (breast milk, cranberry, probiotics, and vitamin A)
• biofeedback
• anticholinergics (for reducing intravesical pressure)
• alpha-blockers (in dysfunctional voiding and neurogenic bladder)
• intermittent catheterization (for children with large PVR)
MANAGEMENT OF FUNCTIONAL CONSTIPATION IN
CHILDREN WITH LUTS
J Urol 2013 Jan 9
Burgers RE et al
Management of functional constipation in children with lower urinary tract symptoms;
Report from the Standardization Committee of the International Children's Continence
Society.
..don't wait on treating constipation in kids with LUTS..
Pediatric urologists frequently report symptoms of constipation in up
to 50% of children seen for LUTS
Our recommendation is to merely assume that all patients who
present with LUTS are constipated.

APPROCCIO AI BAMBINI CON IVU
1. Gli esami non invasivi devono essere considerati la prima scelta in età
pediatrica
2. Forte correlazione tra minzione disfunzionale e della stipsi cronica
(Dysfunctional elimination syndrome)
3. Approccio multidisciplinare utile a Pediatra, Nefrologo, Radiologo e Urologo.
4. La profilassi antibiotica deve essere valutata attentamente

MISURE COLLATERALI PER LA PREVENZIONE DELLE IVU
1. Aumentare l’intake di liquidi
2. Corretta “igiene minzionale” (normale frequenza)
3. Trattare regolarmente la costipazione
