Per chi non avesse avuto ancora l’opportunità di ammirare le opere

di John Stezaker, il primo impatto potrebbe forse risultare sconcertante

e semplicistico, mentre geniale è invece il concetto di fondo che le ha

generate e che tuttora e a pieno diritto le mantiene in auge, nella più alta

considerazione delle collezioni e del mercato dell’arte mondiale, anche grazie

all’accostamento con gli Young British Artists. Questa celata conflittualità

tra i due estremi del processo creativo: la genialità dell’idea di partenza

e l’apparente semplicità dell’opera finita, è in realtà l’unica via concessa

allo spettatore delle opere di John Stezaker per tentare di affrontare una

sua lettura, per tentare di scoprire l’indiscutibile fascino di queste immagini

disturbanti.

Sviluppatasi negli ultimi quarant’anni, l’opera di Stezaker ha ovviamente

beneficiato della fotografia e del suo impiego attraverso il collage,

seguendo quel percorso tortuoso e spesso interrotto che da Tristan Tzara

passa per le ri-scoperte in psicologia delle teorie sulla percezione visiva

della Gestalt e dello Strutturalismo, fino agli esperimenti di Brion Gysin e

di William Burroughs con la tecnica (anche fotografica) del cut-up, in un

incameramento e in una saturazione costante di concetti e linguaggi fin

dal principio subordinati alla sua personalissima ricerca estetica. Le opere

create da John Stezaker utilizzando vecchie fotografie in bianco e nero

di star hollywoodiane e fotografie a

colori più attuali di paesaggi, scorci

architettonici, icone religiose e

immagini della pubblicità, funzionano

come un vero e proprio innesto

botanico, frutto di due immagini

completamente diverse, in un forzato

trapianto di un’immagine sull’altra,

senza però che questo intervento

arrivi mai ad una sua sintesi, ad una

fusione delle due distinte forme in una

nuova, drastica disarmonia estetica.

Prima di tutto Stezaker ci impone,

con le sue combinazioni, coi suoi

innesti, di indagare questa nuova

figura, di cercare in essa tutte quelle corrispondenze di linee e di forme che

seducono la nostra mente in un fallimentare gioco, prima di estrazione e

poi di ricostruzione dell’immagine dominante, senza però consentirci mai di

venirne a capo in maniera chiara e definitiva, rimandando continuamente il

processo di identificazione a causa della sua ridondante ambiguità.

Di fronte a questi improbabili soggetti, a questi inediti ritratti, si è travolti

dalla necessità psicologica di ripercorrerne i tratti, le fantomatiche linee

guida, di seguirne i contorni alla disperata ricerca di una ricostruzione

possibile, di una nuova identità il cui fallimento aprioristico risiede appunto

in questa assenza di connotati continui data dalla sovrapposizione o dalla

sezione che va a discapito di un’immagine come dell’altra. Il tutto si gioca

in una sottile linea di confine che è il bordo della figura sovrapposta, una

linea invisibile, praticamente inesistente per l’occhio, se non fosse invece

l’ “attimo” esatto in cui avviene questa mancata sintesi, in cui confluiscono

e si scaricano nei loro rispettivi e assenti margini le occasioni di continuità,

ma soprattutto di discontinuità della forma. E’ proprio in questo tentativo di

incontro sommerso e invisibile delle due parti che sprofonda inesorabilmente

la nostra in-capacità percettiva, spinta da quel processo inconscio di ricerca

e sintesi in maniera forzata e automatica, che ad un certo punto abbandona

e riemerge improvvisamente senza aver afferrato il suo oggetto-soggetto.

La frustrante sensazione dell’inafferrabilità nei confronti dell’immagine

dominante, intesa allora come significante, azzera e ripristina ogni volta in

maniera automatica il processo di lettura delle opere di John Stezaker in

un circolo vizioso che non trova alcuna via d’uscita nell’ingenua formula:

interpretazione = comprensibilità, riducendo all’inutilità lo sforzo continuamente

fatto per carpirne la chiave di lettura. Una frustrante dimensione di impotente

cecità in cui la soluzione non è mai data dall’immaginazione, perché questa

viene svilita a priori in una arbitrarietà priva di appigli col soggetto, che fino

all’ultima analisi conserva imperturbato il suo totale mistero.

La figura dominante è dunque in queste opere il mancato prodotto,

perfetto e difettoso allo stesso tempo, di sovrapposizioni apparentemente

casuali di immagini diverse in tutto e per tutto, qui fattesi sovra-impressioni, il

cui “principio attivo” ci è del tutto ignoto, ma il cui effetto collaterale principale

è quello di imporci comunque sia una disturbante anomalia estetica e

anatomica, e di costringerci in seconda istanza ad uno sforzo percettivo

per arrivare a considerarla una nuova immagine, una nuova sembianza che

nulla ha a che vedere con la metamorfosi o con il concetto comune di

mostruosità.

La ricerca di Stezaker non ruota attorno alla elaborazione di un nuovo

concetto di mostruosità o di deformità; la scoperta di fatto che invece risulta

evidente nelle sue opere, soprattutto nei cicli: Mask, Marriage e Shadow, è

che la mostruosità esiste in potenza su ciascun volto, che l’accostamento,

anche simmetrico, di due volti diversi genera automaticamente una

figura nuova dai tratti mostruosi perché irriconoscibili e psicologicamente

inaccettabili.

Non ci troviamo di fronte ad una mostruosità naturale causata

dalla deformità, né di fronte ad una mostruosità di pura fantasia, né

alla combinazione in chiave estetica di entrambe, ma di fronte ad una

sommersa mostruosità parallela, appartenente cioè a entrambe le figure

della composizione, perché già in potenza in ciascuna di esse, ma mai

fusa, sintetizzata se fosse anche dallo spettatore più intraprendente, in un

unico, riconoscibile “mostro”, perché proiettate entrambe all’infinito nella

loro normale figurazione, sovrapposte ma ben distinte l’una dall’altra.

La necessità dunque di una seconda lettura in chiave interpretativa e

allegorica delle opere di John Stezaker è alla fine l’unico approdo certo

in questo complicato gioco di controsensi estetici e psicologici, il cui

scopo: svelare o confondere, ci è dato solo e soltanto dalla nostra volontà

interpretativa e non da interventi espliciti in chiave di lettura da parte

dell’artista che, eclissato ogni più ottimistico tentativo di impadronirsi di

una formula di partenza con la quale sopraffare questo sprofondante

controsenso, costringe la nostra capacità di astrazione a perdurare nei

confronti di un’immagine che per noi si è fatta ormai pura ragione.

Nato nel 1949 a Rochester, è un

fotografo e artista inglese. I suoi lavori

sono surreali e spesso usa come tecnica

il collage attraverso cui crea opere

interessanti al limite con la Pop art.

Julian Stallabrass disse di lui “Il

contrasto che è nel cuore dei suoi lavori

non è tra la rappresentazione e la realtà,

ma tra gli elementi primitivi della cultura

popolare, e la visione ironica e cosciente

delle immagini post-moderno”.

Il suo lavoro re-esamina le varie

relazioni per l’immagine fotografica:

come documento della verità,

memoria, simbolo della cultura

moderna. Nei suoi collage, Stezaker appropria di immagini trovate in libri,

riviste, cartoline e li usa come ‘ready made’. Attraverso i suoi accostamenti

eleganti, Stezaker adotta i contenuti e i contesti delle immagini originali

per esprimere la sua visione arguta e pungente. Nella sua serie intitolata

“Marriage” Stezaker si concentra sul concetto di ritrattistica, sia come

genere artistico storico e identità pubblica. Usando scatti di classiche stelle

del cinema, Stezaker fonde e sovrappone volti famosi, creando ‘icone’ ibride

che dissociano il familiare, per creare sensazioni perturbanti. Accoppiando

identità maschili e femminili in un

unico personaggio, Stezaker punta

ad un’armonia sconnessa, dove la

disgiunzione della differenza integra

e toglie tutto nello stesso momento.

Nelle sue immagini correlate, le

personalità (e le nostre idealizzazioni

di loro) diventano accessorie e vuote,

reso abbiette attraverso i loro difetti

ingranditi e dalla lotta per il loro

predominio visivo.

Usando immagini dell’era d’oro

di Hollywood, temporalmente e

concettualmente Stezaker si impegna

nel suo interesse per il Surrealismo.

Poste nel contesto contemporaneo, i suoi ritratti conservano la loro aura

di fascino, nel contempo invece operano come esotiche ‘artefatti’ di una

cultura obsoleta. I ritratti di Stezaker celebrano il grottesco, rendendo la

storia d’amore con il modernismo altrettanto interessante e perversa.
