This is a close examination of the role that self-motivating corporal punish-ments have played over the students of the Naval Academy in Livorno. The abo-lition of punishments such as going up the mast on the brigantine hulk and run-ning round the yard is, according to the author counter-productive because thealternatives to these methods tend to frustrate the students making themcowardly and aggressive.
