The archaeological site of Herculaneum is located on the
Bay of Naples, in the shadow of the volcano Vesuvius
which caused its destruction in the eruption of AD 79.
Herculaneum in the first century AD was a thriving city
which enjoyed the social and trade network that flourished
in the Campanian region at that time, with links to the entire Roman world. Although Herculaneum
was not the largest or most important town in the region it did enjoy the presence of Roman citizens
of high rank, a secure port, good fishing, and intensive cultivation of vines and oil. When Vesuvius
erupted in AD 79, it destroyed the city and the surrounding area ìncluding Pompeii, Stabiae and O-
plontis. Unlike Pompeii, which was covered by lapilli (light volcanic stones), Herculaneum was de-
stroyed when a cloud of hot gas hit the city at a speed of 70 km per hour and at a temperature of cir-
ca 400’C. The city was then alternately hit by pyroclastic surges and flows (hot gases with rock
fragments), was ultimately buried under 9-21 m of volcanic material.
Herculaneum was rediscovered in 1709 and subsequent escavations, explored the site by tunnel,
largely with the aim of obtaining marble, statues and frescoes. lt was in 1780 that the excavations
were abandoned in favour of the easier working conditions at Pompeii. Open-air excavations dld
not really get underway until 1927-1958 under Amedeo Maiuri, who was responsible for excavating
most of the site that can be seen today. The extraordinary nature of Herculaneum’s volcanic burial
allowed the preservation of the Roman buildings and their contents including metals, wood, human
remains, foodstuffs arid other organic materials. 1 CASA DI ARITIDE

The eruption of
Vesuvius in AD 79
During the erup-
tion of Vesuvius
on August 24th in
AD 79, Hercula-
neum, a small city
situated between
Vesuvius and the
sea, was buried
not by ashes and
lapilli, but by a
mass of volcanic
material.
The discovery of
Herculaneum
Herculaneum was
discovered by
chance in 1709,
while a farmer was
digging a well. Sys-
tematic excavations
by tunnel were con-
ducted in 1738 by
order of King
Charles III of Bour-
bon.
The Gymnasium
The magnificent
Gymnasium is a
vast rectangular
area, occupying
an entire insula
of the town,
where a lots of
sports took
place.

The House of
the Telephus Re-
lief.
It is one of the
largest and rich-
est houses in
the south site of
the city. A mar-
ble relief depict-
ing the myth of
Telephus was
found here and
so the house
was named after
it.
The House of
the Large
Doorway
The large door-
way, after
which this
house was
named, is cer-
tainly the most
beautiful one
in Hercula-
neum.
The Samnite
House
It is the best ex-
ample of Samnite
architecture, from
the beautiful en-
trance in tuff
blocks, with Corin-
thian capitals and
a dentil cornice.

The House of
the Mosaic
Atrium
It is one of the
most beauti-
ful of the
town’s sea-
front houses
with a view of
the whole bay
and the is-
lands
The House of
Neptune and
Amphitrite
It belonged to
a rich mer-
chant. From
the entrance of
the house a
large wall mo-
saic depicting
the sea-god
Neptune and
his wife Amphi-
trite can be
Argos’s house
It is the most
beautiful aristo-
cratic building in
the town and
was named after
a fresco repre-
senting Io
guarded by Argos
which once
decorated the
hall of the perys-
tile.

The House of the
Wooden Partition
The most interest-
ing feature of this
large house is the
carbonized wooden
partition that would
have allowed the
tablinum to be
closed off from the
atrium when private
meetings were held.
The Suburban Baths
In the suburban
area, outside the city
walls along the sea-
front, there are the
Suburban Baths
which were one of
the most recent
buildings to be con-
structed before the
AD 79 eruption and
allowed the Romans
to bathe in luxurious
surroundings.
The view from the ar-
chaeological site
At the entrance of the
archaeological site our
attention is caught by
a wonderful view: the
ancient city which lies
buried under the mod-
ern city. Above them
both we can see on
the two volcanic
peaks: Vesuvius on the
right and Somma on
the left.

… i vestiti...
Gli uomini indossano, di-rettamente sulla pelle,
una corta tunica. In occa-
sioni importanti indossano
sopra la tunica la “toga”,
manto di lana molto am-pio. Anche le donne usano
la tunica e, sopra la stola,
per uscire aggiungono
mantello detto pallio.
...I giochi nell’antica Herculaneum...
I bambini giocavano
piano inclinato. Le bambine giocavano con le bambole “pupa”. Per strada i monelli giocavano a Palla
(pila) o a Trottola (turbo).
Giochiamo

delle noci e

Our city contains a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many other architec-tural treasures. It is vital that the young generations know about their local
heritage because only by learn-ing about it, can they come to love and care for it. We hope this will lead to respect for what our ancestors have left us so that we can use it to build a bright future and not lose the traces of our past. The children that were involved in this pro-ject have taught us to look at the wealth of features in our city’s marvellous archaeological site. Through their brief expla-nations the children take us by hand and using our imagination they take us back to ancient
times and we smell the sea, laurel and myrtle. This magazine is the result of an in-depth learning programme developed with school pupils from different year groups that focused on the historical treasures of our city. The children have shown great enthusiasm for deepening their understanding of their heritage and have agreed to become “Young Heritage Ambassadors” for
their city whose sustainable development is linked to our cultural resources.
