Marghera e dell’intero Campo trincerato. L’intero complesso
parte austriaca dell’intero Veneto, forte Marghera divenne

A great history
For some time now, fortresses and fortifications have lost
their value in terms of military strategy, acquiring instead
one of testimonials of their past. From the founding of
Venice until 1805 "Malghera" was a thriving village at the
edge of the lagoon. Taverns, inns, hotels and warehouses
characterized the area as one of the most important trading
hub for goods and for people travelling between the city on
the lagoon and the mainland. But its own crucial position (at
the crossroad between the edge of the lagoon and the line
joining Mestre and Venice), forced a military use, and the old
quarter was turned into a grand and, for the time, modern
fortress, able to keep the enemy fire of cannons away from
Venice and to control land access to the city.
At the outbreak of the Republican uprising on March 22,
1848, Forte Marghera was captured by insurgents. As of
June, with the gradual recovery of the Veneto region by the
Austrians, Forte Marghera became for just under a year, until
May 1849, the focus of the Venetian resistance armed
against the troops lead by General Radetzski. Soon after, the
mainland of Mestre became a major military hub in northern
Italy, and was further developed to serve this function.
Since the end of XIX, because of the development of new and
more powerful artillery systems, the fortress defensive ability
became insufficient so it was strengthened building a fortress
system: the entrenched Camp of Mestre.
With the First World War new weaponry, such as aviation,
nullified the defensive capacity of Forte Marghera and the
entrenched Camp. The whole complex was reclaimed as a
storage and logistics facility. Up to 1996 Forte Marghera was
one of the pivots of the army logistics supply system
deployed in the north-east. With the divestiture by the army
of the entire entrenched Camp of Mestre, a long process
began to return to public use an area that, over time, has
acquired the status of property protected for its historical,
architectural and environmental significance.
Forte Marghera spans across the history of the Venetian land
and will continue to be a protagonist.

a pochissimi chilometri dall’Aeroporto Internazionale Marco
Tecnologico. Nelle immediate vicinanze si trovano il Parco

Positioned at the crossing point between Venice and
Mestre, Forte Marghera is at the heart of Mestre
fortifications system (the "entrenched Camp of Mestre").
It is part of the green belt that, based on the project of
the Bosco di Mestre, surrounds the whole Mestre urban area.
It is also centrally positioned in the so-called "Venice
Waterfront", the system of urban redevelopment involving
Porto Marghera on the one hand, and the area of Campalto
and Tessera on the other.
Forte Marghera can be considered the effective barycentre of
the north-east area.
A unique position
The fort is strategically positioned to be a natural link
between mainland and the lagoon. It is accessible by boat
using the canal that connects Mestre to Venice, it is 5 minutes
from the Venice historical center, 2 minutes from the town
of Mestre, and just a few kilometers from Venice Marco
Polo International Airport, the train station and
the highways that reach Mestre from the port of Venice.
The implementation of a SFMR station (the Metropolitan
Regional Rail Service) is on the planning, as well as a foot
& bike bridge connecting the Forte to the university
campus in Via Torino, and to the Vega Science Park.
Nearby is the San Giuliano Park, a sports facility dedicated
to track and field athletics.

Dopo l’annessione al Regno d’Italia
del 1866, il problema di rafforzare
la difesa di Venezia dal lato della
terraferma, fu affrontato con la
predisposizione di una cintura più
esterna di forti realizzati nell’ultimo
decennio del secolo. Si tratta di tre
forti, realizzati secondo il modello
detto di tipo “Tunkler” e costituenti
il primo nucleo del “Campo Trincerato
di Mestre”. A questi primi tre forti,
tra il 1907 e il 1912, se ne
aggiunsero altri sei, e una polveriera.
Oggi, tutti dismessi dalle autorità
militari, ne sono fruibili con varie
modalità ben cinque: i forti Gazzera,
Carpendo, Tron, la polveriera Bazzera
e naturalmente forte Marghera,
il decano del Campo Trincerato
di Mestre.
After te Venice’s annexation to the
Italian Kingdom (1866), the
strengthening of his defence on the
dryland side was realized by the
building of a fortress, belt, buided at
the end of the century: three fortress
“Tunkler” model, the first nucleus of
the “entrenched Camp of Mestre”.
Between 1907 and 1912 other six
forts and a powder magazine was
added. Today they are all abandoned
by the army and five of them are
usable in different ways: Gazzera,
Carpendo, Tron, Bazzera and, of
course, forte Marghera, the dean of

dai francesi e l’altra dagli austriaci.
in muratura portante.

A great legacy
Forte Marghera is formed by an outer ring of four bastions
that encloses a central area, also composed of four bastions,
protected in turn sideways by two counterguards, all
surrounded by a double moat, one internal and one
external, which directly take the waters from the lagoon.
Towards Mestre, in the so-called attack front, there are three
rivelins – fortifications of a triangular shape – detached from
the main building of a few hundred meters, and defended
by moats, now covered, designed to increase the defensive
capacity, but above all to make possible the raids against the
besiegers, clear testimony of the several defense needs that
were required over time.
The most significant buildings still present in the fortress are
the two French barracks (1805-1814), located on the front
near the dock. They are two-storey structures, with elements
made of Istria stone. In the small central area there are also
two gunpowder houses, located in the rear of the bastions
facing Mestre, with barrel roof, and finishing in Istria stone.
A cement tripartite two-storey building, called Palmanova, was
build between the two world wars, large warehouses in brick
bearing and wooden roof, and a modest two-storey building in
masonry of little relevance, complete the settlement.
It shall be noticed, in the external wall, the presence of a
structure built over the sixteenth century bridge, of which
the three arches remain noticeable, and the nineteenth
century stables with bearing walls. At each bastion, on the
shoe, is a gunpowder house with stone entry. Four Italian
barracks, built around 1880, with very thick walls, reinforced
roof, and a rounded side toward the bastion, with loopholes.
One of these houses the Museo del Forte.
There are many buildings of various sizes including another
Palmanova, historically dating in the period between the
two world wars, used, until recently, as warehouses, offices,
workshops and military housing.

come sinora sperimentato dalle numerose associazioni

The recovery and the opening of Forte Marghera to the
city, strongly contributes to the urban redevelopment of
this amphibian and bipolar city. Indeed, both Venice and
Mestre find their natural meeting point, rich in historical
and environmental significance. It is also a place that has
become an important supply of green areas. Additionally,
it is a place that can offer unique opportunities to engage
in activities related to leisure, sport, and culture, as so far
experienced by the several organizations that have
realized artistic productions, performances, promotion of

culture and sport events linked to the natural environment
and to the lagoon.
Finally, Forte Marghera, which was the center from which
grew the creation of the entrenched Camp of Mestre, must
be the engine of the recovery and reclaiming process.
Strongly emerges the true nature of the civil service that the
Forte will play, not just as a natural oasis, a monument, and
a crossroad between the mainland and the lagoon. Forte
Marghera is a key element in the rehabilitation of this
territory and its cultural identity.

Forte Marghera, having lost its value in terms of military
strategy, is now acquiring role of testimony of our past.
At the same time, the value of its strategic location
has increased.
A complete restoration and reclaim of the complex requires
the participation of organizations that can contribute
significantly, both financially and with their specific
activities. It is a great opportunity for companies that
derive a benefit from setting in such a prestigious place,
creating worth in harmony with the unique nature of the
place, in close relationship with the two cities, the city of
art and the “new city”, and with the socio-economic
context in which it is located.
The site has all the characteristics to host a variety of
purposes, and to become a cultural and touristic center
capable of integrating, by putting them closer, the cultural
production of the city of art, and the activities of the
mainland. Lastly, by playing a leading role in the
redevelopment of the territory. The Administration of the
City of Venice is working on procedures to arrange a
managing organization of the Fortress. An organization
capable of creating, with the involvement of a large cluster
of individuals, organizations and businesses, the conditions
for the restoration and maintenance of the complex, the
development of production and consumption of culture, with
an comprehensive understanding of protection and
conservation, and of budgetary constraints, in order to
ensure benefits to the community and to the investors.
A unique opportunity to invest
