Our spirit is that of contamination: we always try to mix different styles, stories and emotions. It’s extremely important to maintain the relation with local traditions so that the guest, travelling for job, can realize to be in Rome rather than in New York. Our research is focused on living the moment of the architecture, the place, the event, the step. “Designing time” is an interesting and exciting challenge, especially if lived through the eyes of the user. We aim to give our client and its customers the role of an actor, not that of a spectator. Hotels, restaurants, shops, are just a few of the places where we regularly encounter “carpe diem” but does not always leave us with a trace, a memory. Atmosphere, lighting, materials and colours form the basis of our design research for these spaces. We work so our end spectator perceives and interacts with the space that we have built in that moment of transition. CaberlonCaroppi

On the strength of 39 projects for international and independent brand hotels (InterContinental, Marriot, Nh Hotel, Design Hotel, Charme&relax, Resort, etc.) and head offices just opened in Peking, Caberlon Caroppi Studio extends its activity from feasibility studies to master plans, from cost control to concept design, from archi-tecture to interior design through (as in the case of Hotel Watt 13) to coordinated image design: from the logo to the uniform. The latest projects experiment with new hospitality concepts: a new technological, practical and fast 3 star hotel, a Loft Hotel in Milan and a cohousing in Fermo in the Marches Region. The latter is a kind of village where private spaces and common are-as co-exist, such as the gym, club house, chil-dren’s playground-garden and equipped areas.
Our projects focus special attention on interior design and this leads us to emphasise the de-tails, atmospheres and emotions generated by scenarios with which guests must interact. This approach is certainly more orientated towards a figurative artistic trend without, however, over-looking the engineering role that a hospitality consultant must play. Let me explain better: our studio over the last five years has specialised in the design of hospitality facilities - hotels, resorts and spas are just some of the kinds of structure we deal with every day. This means that our role must not only focus on the interior but we must also provide our client with complete support: we must be able to keep within the budget, pro-pose feasible and functional solutions and seek to create a product that ensures a profitable in-vestment. In as much, the engineering aspect must always be borne in mind. Making a mista-ke in one bathroom in a hotel project may also mean replicating the same error in 300. Expe-rience, specialisation and professionalism are the essential ingredients for good work.
04 Introduzione / Introduction

We believe that in our sector the most impor-tant aspect for a hotel project is to start from the “genius loci”: from the relationship with the local area, local traditions and history. In an ef-fort to identify the social-cultural, architectural, language and customs features that characteri-se a place, an environment or a city. her hand, hotels for us are public places that nevertheless retain a private aspect of homes: swimming pool, hamman, spa and fitness centres are just some of the services that contemporary hotels must offer, not only for guests but even through personalised packages for the public, thereby becoming an oasis for relaxation and meetings after a hard day at work. We can therefore as-sume that a hotel is a hybrid building, a public and at the same time private place, an urban and simultaneously a self-referral building, that exalts both comfort and the overall architectural image.
We enjoy working in this sector because our client is a businessman, a person who helps develop new products, new markets or new production methods, and who needs – to ma-ximise his investment - to be surrounded by va-lid consultants capable of turning an idea into a solid and profitable enterprise. A hospitality facility is a complex machine that involves a gre-at many people, both in the design stage and then in management. Continual comparison with different people was and is fundamental for us: from plant technicians through to chefs, from cleaning through to room management. Subsequent follow up of facilities we have de-signed has enabled us to perfect the project in all its parts: continual comparison with mana-gement questions has given us the awareness that a good hospitality project must not neces-sarily only be something visible, “a fine stage”, but must also envisage what goes on behind the backdrops. Designing rooms that can be cleaned in just 18 minutes, seeking to optimi-se resources by studying different work flows, ensuring that the building is ecosustainable or even self sufficient also means designing with management in mind.

In an area of Milan with strong artistic movement, the Watt13
project was born. The restructure presented various difficulties,
like integration of the new rooms within the existing structure.
The planning approach bore this aspect in mind, with solutions
combining strong technological content supported by a
minimalistic and aggressive design, and through exploiting small
structural and furnishing tricks in order “to capture the light”.

La hall, con una superficie di oltre 700
mq è stata resa luminosa e aperta
verso l’esterno attraverso un grande
lucernario, una corte interna e numerose
vetrate; inoltre è stata declinata in vari
ambienti senza intervenire con pareti o
elementi rigidi.
La luce, sia naturale che artificiale,
diventa elemento chiave per dare
identità al luogo.
Talvolta la fonte luminosa è stata
volutamente nascosta per concentrarsi
sull’effetto di luce, in altri casi l’attenzione
si è focalizzata su lampade dalla forte
connotazione e carattere.

has been rendered luminous and opens
onto the outside through a great skylight, an
atrium with many large windows; moreover it
has been divided into several areas without
the intervention of walls or rigid elements.
The light, both natural and artificial, becomes
the key element for giving identity to the place.
Sometimes the source of the light is intentionally
hidden in order to focus the attention on the effect
of the light itself, in other cases the attention
is focused on striking lamps full of character.

dell’industria dell’inizio secolo e pertanto l’edificio principale,
archeologico-industriale.
The building is the site of the historic Muggiani cotton mill
(later the Unione Manifatture), an ancient factory for the
spinning of cotton constructed in 1904 and restored at the
end of the nineties.
The architecture that characterizes the construction is
symbolic of the industry at the beginning of the century and
therefore the main building destined once to the production
of fabrics, has been restored to safeguard these elements of
archaeological manufacturing interest.

percettiva e alta tecnologia.

In terms of logic of industrial archeology the art deco inspiration is the natural consequence of a desire to enhance the value of a structure and its historical-architectural features, and to recreate those atmospheres and moods that are inherent to it. The front façade’s wide windows reveal the dramatic chandelier that spans the hotel’s four floors, the leather-clad rooms in the hall and the first-floor lounge overlooking the reception area, the custom-made wood furnishings and the arti-stic embellishments in the rooms. All were chosen to enhance the relationship between form and function, perceptive fascination and high techno-logy.”

This project is the result of a careful interpretation of architecture, the place and its history; a fusion of genius loci and contemporaneity, design and technology. For us, it is urther evidence that each project indeed has its own story to tell.

categorie superiori.

21Hotel & Resort Loft Hotel Ripamonti Milano
The loft is an open forum with no internal divisions, essential in its architectural lines and where the industrial remains in the forms of the supporting structures on sight, sometimes even exhibited, together with plant networks.Living in a loft is a state of mind, produced by love for space, but also for the air and the light does not necessarily mean that the spaces are large: rather it means that the spaces are valued at most so it seems, sometimes, larger than they actually are.

About ten kilometres from the capital’s historic
centre, the Pisana Palace has a strategic position.
From three years has undergone to a challenging
total renovation project in stages without ever
closing the structure receptive.
The great Hall takes inspiration by the fact that the
hotel gravitates around the airport and that, in addition
to passengers has always hosted the crews Alitalia,
so we decided to guide the guest through a sort
of landing strip. It is an almost compulsory journey
made up of a highly cinematic wooden band, which
accompanies to the reception, turns on himself and
returns.
l’albergo gravita intorno all’aereoporto e che, oltre
ritorna indietro.

some arabesque combinations, signs of a past
history and enduring influences. The colours and
the materials are local, revamped. The design
alternates between fragments of history and
modern tastes. The project has been developed in
collaboration with the architect Franco Caputo.
passata e influenze subite. I colori e i materiali sono
quelli locali, rivisti in chiave moderna.
l’arch. Franco Caputo.

fortemente comunicativi e scenografici.
Negli ambienti prevalentemente chiari e minimal
emergono degli elementi che conferiscono
riconoscibilità e carattere: nella hall i due
imponenti banconi bar e reception in legno
laccato nero e oro, e nelle camere il decoro
”tatuaggio” delle pareti.
The hotel rises within an important architectural
multifunctional complex service center “Il vulcano
buono” (The Good Volcano) of Renzo Piano
which, because of the layout of the spaces
represents a point of meeting and a cultural
centre.
Because of this, the necessity arises to design
spaces which are not only faithful to the Holiday
Inn brand, but are people friendly and have a
striking visual effect.
In these mainly light and minimal areas there
emerges elements which confer familiarity and
character: in the hall there are two imposing
bar counters and a reception in black and gold
lacqured wood, and in the rooms “tattooed”
walls.

The objective was to create a structure capable of
guaranteeing a comfortable stay, even for longer periods of
time: a different way of creating a welcoming atmosphere
either for a day or for an entire year, offering comfort and
warmth in a private atmosphere without compromising
traditional hotel services; a place capable of evoking a
domestic atmosphere in which the guest is able to feel at
home everywhere.

innanzi tutto, sull’aspetto immagine-

sulla terrazza e all’interno dell’abitazione.

The architectural language is the result of contamination of the lo-
cal tradition of baked brick and contemporary ways of living that
does not give up comfort, pleasantness of the landscape, energy
conservation and the preservation of the landscape. The large win-
dows bring in direct communication with the home relaxing lan-
dscape outside, sliding the brise soleil offer valuable assistance
in maintaining a good microclimate on the terrace and inside the
house. The attention to detail and elegance of orthogonal lines are
the characters that distinguish the architecture Hill.

The future of industrial products lies in customisation: turning an
industrial product into a unique object. An example is the Fiat 500
with more than 500,000 possible combinations.
This is precisely what happens in our projects: the first objective
is always to try and create unique settings, in harmony with archi-
tecture and the place; the second is to complete the first through
furnishings, lighting and finishes that help narrate the project,
whereby their characteristics ensure personality and exclusivity.
Attention to detail (as a legend of architecture, Mies van der
Rohe, said “God is in the details”) is the fundamental condition
for the success of the project. Nothing must be overlooked.
This gives rise to the Requirement of almost always involving per-
sonalised or specifically designed accessories. If the product is
successful, it may happen that it moves from the hotel to a com-
pany, thereby becoming an industrial product. But this in no way
means that the product is part of future projects. Respect for the
place and the project are always our first priority. Every project
has its own history.
