Se ne ricava la sen-sazione di orizzonti primigeni e fantastici, come nell’opera The tree of life.

E siamo infine all’ampia produzione recente.

How much art is the fruit of a watchful job and how much of a creative inspiration, is an an-cient discussion. Undoubtedly art is born from an impulse to represent, to say as well as to say, to translate into a work ones own intuitions. How-ever, it’s difficult to say how much of what is rea-lized is the settling of gazes, ideas, techniques, and how much is an authentic invention. The fact is that in the work, and especially in the one of a fluid register as it is the informal one, art appears both as technique and miracle, gift of art and ex-perience of the artist who translates, interprets in that sign that is together abstraction and con-creteness, one’s own gaze and one’s own world. Such reflection can introduce Antonella Botticel-li’s art. Maddalonese by adoption with Beneven-tian roots, despite being driven by an intuitive sensibility, she has always significantly aimed to express through her work, not just her state of mind but also an existential content. As in the in-formal tradition, in fact, she pursues in the sign and in the material, not just an evocative ability that escapes a design elaboration but, also an in-terpretative lucidity and even a perspective that is also a visionary content horizon; so, the work becomes at the same time watchful immersion in the pictorial matter and self-reflection. Sev-eral times the artist has mentioned to me places and contexts she aims to outline in her paintings,

as futuristic cities and contaminated natures. In-deed, in a certain period, the image of a world in danger, especially from the environmental pro-file, has been the leit motiv of her production.

However, in general, the condition of her art is to listen, to experiment functional to the visual outcome and to the outcome in relation to a per-sonal warning of the spaces of ulteriority that the image provides to the artist himself. It should al-so be said that, since 2010 the artist has made si-gnificant variations of her language, moving from a score that was more instinctive and entrusted to the sign other than to the color, to the begin-ning of the second decade of the year 2000 with works at times very interesting, as “Innocenza”, of 2011, in which on the grey background, lays a light and clear shape, like a breath, that however, determines a perspective tension between back-ground and foreground and at the same time a feeling of silent levity, which is matched on the left of the painting by an undefined form, like a staircase or a box, that on the other hand under-lines and makes the composition more concrete and almost symbolic.

Or like “Blue”, of 2012, in which a slight grid of chromatic signs on a velvety blue background evokes an intimate, light, musical dimension. The first period was followed, between 2014 and 2016, by a more typically informal and materi-

al production oriented to define more elaborated contexts, often characterized by circular move-ments with thickening and rarefactions of the material, almost always monochrome, in black or brown, filled in white backgrounds and with tarry effects that still annex, as coming from the inside, suggestive reflections of golden light, in which the author grafts traces of color with a pre-cise symbolic connotation.

The most interesting works of the last years are an “Untitled”of 2016, characterized by a circu-lar sign in the foreground and another one, al-most extemporaneous, that joins it and is like a pendant of a red strip at the top on right side of the work; another “Untitled” unique among the works of this period, characterized by segments that thicken into a dense, fibrous and some-times hollow chromatic mass, with denser color strands; and yet a beautiful “Untitled” 2016, in which the chromatic mass unfolds in a softer and brighter score, with light hues, brown on white and with golden effect on an also clear back-ground, but, on which are placed in parallel, on the right side below, two red signs that stand out vertically evoking a wound. In 2018 works with an absolutely new slant ensued.

The shapeless material is still present but bright and labyrinthine sign paths radiate from it, like tracks placed as a grid on a magmatic color back-ground. One gets the feeling of primeval and fan-tastic horizons as in the work “The three of life”. This works are followed by a series of singular works, characterized by a circular shape, still ma-teric or even detected and in metal, that config-ures a more symbolic dimension.

The circle is geometry, an oculus in which we almost configure variously characterized, variou-sly allusive space, swinging between the white of a pure material and the transparent and degrad-ing relief of a sort of crater funnel or a cosmic space. A series of works on paper characterized by a more polished material, with leaning planes, internal spaces and reflections of deep color that get dispersed in the foreground, characterizes the 2019, that ends with a unique research on new ef-fects that evoke woods and rough surfaces on an intense red background.

And finally we are at the large recent produc-tion. An initial experimentation of works, still on paper, introduces the artist to a more signic painting in which she retrieves the past expe-rience and, in particular, her informal scores, with a generally warmer chromaticism and si-gnage paths in which ones can read both the re-covery of a sort of graffiti, or at least a tension to sign minimalism, and more narrative clues with shapes and even figures that unfold in freedom, on the thread of an intimate dreamed vision. The sign is sometimes overlapped to the background, intertwined with it or, sometimes, emerges from it with evocative woodcut effects. However, even in the final production, the underlying figure of Botticelli’s art remains, the one of an expres-sion that aspires to be direct and at the same time watchful, clearly composed, even thematically interpreted. Signs that on the other hand testify the commitment and seriousness of the artist and especially her inspired vocation.

Come potresti definirti?

ANTONELLA BOTTICELLI, AN ARTISTAND HER INNER WORLD

By Elide Apice

Antonella Botticelli is a sensitive soul, attentive to what surrounds her and able to transfuse it in her art-works. When was the artistic passion born in you?

Since ever, as far as I can remember! Since when I was just a little girl I’ve always had a pencil in my hand to meet what, over time, I realized to be my real need to draw, to create something.

When have you started believing to be “an artist”?

Mah, to tell you the truth I’ve started to believe in myself and in my possibilities when I understood that the people around me, who somehow got in touch with my artworks, appreciated my job encouraging me to con-tinue. Before then I didn’t believe in what I was doing just because for me it was completely natural to put what I used to feel inside onto paper or sheet, and then on canvas. I was not looking for art, art got into me. Antonella Botticelli tells us about her difficult beginnings in her family:Not that they didn’t believe in me, but my parents had dreamed of a completely different kind of professional path. So, to make them accept me as an “artistic expression” was not easy until they understood that the artistic world was “my” world and my future.

When was your first opening to the outside?

I can remember that day very well. It was in 2010 and, for the first time, I took part to an arts collection exhi-bition held at Castel dell’ Ovo in Naples. A wonderful experience whose emotions will always be kept in my heart. That was the time I really started to believe in myself and I felt I could continue along this path that is neither easy nor granted.

How could you define yourself?

I was born as a visual artist but, before long, I realised I couldn’t find in the figurative art the strenght I was feeling inside. Afterwards, I approached to the informal art and, using the material and the spatulas, I’ve started to express all the strenght I had inside, the pathos I felt in my soul and that I needed to express.

What is the physical place and the place of the soul where you work better?

The place of the soul is the spirituality which combines with solitude. When I work I need to be alone with myself and with my soul. I don’t like to be watched by someone while I use colours and spatulas because I need to recharge myself. I usually think about a subject and then I let it settle imagining solutions, thinking about the technique, working on the sketches. Everything happens in my physical place, “the room of my own”, to say that in Virginia Woolf style, which is my studio, almost a sacred place for my art.

Who is your art addressed to? What is its message?

What I express is addressed to a wide public. I try to transmit my witness about the life we are living, nature and the world that surrounds us. Informal art is not easy to understand. I believe that who approaches my artistic world is endowed with a strength sensitivity and I also believe that through our own sensitivity, we can recognize the artist’s one and consequently be able to explore our own soul.

Not just painting in your artistic expressions, what else do you make?

Not only canvases of course, even though the work on canvas is prominent among the other forms of art. I can find a great motivation also using other materials like paper, for example, but most of all, I love sculpture: I really like strength expressed through hands that shape the material.

What kind of job are you working at right now?

At the moment I’m dealing with the realization of my artworks catalogue so I’m a bit in stasis. A stasis that coincides with this new situation of post Covid freedom. During the Covid-19 emergency lockdown I worked a lot making artworks that were the outcome of the anguish I felt inside. I also donated one of them for the Istituto Pascale of Naples fundraising.

Antonella Botticelli was born in Benevento in 1971. Raised artistically under the guidance of the grand-master Crescenzo del Vecchio, after the figurative beginning she comes to an informal painting of strong materical and visionary feature. “Her art, in balance between visionariness and abstraction, possesses a sign full of energy, characterized by strong tonal contrasts. It’s within this tense and sometimes dramatic register that the artist pursues her own existential dimension marked by a strong psychological reflection.”
