especially dandelions that can have a 1 taproot.
Simply pulling the weed oten results in the
taproot being ractured allowing it to re-grow.
A weed extractor is a clever tool head that can be
attached to a multi-change handle then simply
pushed into the ground, twisted and pulled out,
the weed with root will be removed with this easy
action. A weeding knie can also be used on tough
weeds with the ootrest providing extra leverage.
Mowing
Spring time is when most gardeners turn to their lawn to begin the regular task o mowing. WOLF-Gartenoer a selection o power tools to help keep your lawn tidy throughout the growing season. In addition to the busy mowing season, it is the work in Autumn time that is most benefcial to producinga healthy thick green lawn. It is during September/October when you should examine your lawn to decidewhat action needs to be taken to remove thatch and to aerate the soil.
Thatching
Thatch is a fbrous layer which orms on the surace o many lawns. When this layer is an inch or more inthickness a semi-waterproo layer is created which prevents the water owing into the soil and to the roots.In Autumn the eects are more serious as the thatch prevents the thickening o the tur and creates aconstant wet organic blanket which sits on top o the grass and encourages disease.
To prevent the ormation o thatch, regular raking and brushing will removethe debris that builds up to create the problem. The key time or de-thatchingis Autumn; use a rake to gather leaves and other debris o the grass. You canuse a lawn rake to break up small amounts o thatch but occasionally i it isvery thick you will need to scariy instead. Youcan manually scariy using a multi-changemoss removal rake tool head which will bite intothe lawn to lit up the thatch. Alternatively, i youhave a large lawn an electric scarifer will be very
eective in removing the organic matter quickly. Ater de-thatching, a lawn canlook bad temporarily but will recover rapidly with new shoots growing toproduce a thickened healthier lawn in Spring.
Aeration
Aerating is another task that can be required annually, particularly in clay soils and high impacted ground.The key beneft to aeration is to loosen compacted soils to allow the grass roots to penetrate deeper intothe soil making them stronger and more resilient to the eects o drought and disease. A roller mossremoval multi-change head opens the soil and pulls out small plugs allowing the nutrients, water and airto be absorbed into the soil essential or grass growth. Choosing Pruners
There are so many pruners how do you know which one to use?
Well, like loppers that all depends on the cutting job in hand, is it
trimming new stems or tougher woodier growth.
Bypass pruners work on a scissor like cutting action with one blade
bypassing the other. They are ideal or cutting growth which is younger
(up to 2 years old) as they provide a very clean cut, essential or
maintaining a healthy plant or shrub. Little pressure is required in
pruning o this nature so the pruners themselves are light in weight.
Bypass pruners can still be used on older cuttings but a little more
eort will be required by the user.
For older thicker stems it is best to use an anvil pruner which will reduce
the strain on the wrist and hand. With anvil pruners the blade closes
against a soter metal on the lower jaw, this does not produce such a
clean cut as a bypass pruner which is why it is not suited to young stemsbut more to older wood where the cleanliness o the cut is not so
important. Always consider the density o the wood you are cutting and
ensure you have the right tool or the job, you may want to upgrade the
cutting tool to avoid unnecessary strain on the hand.
Choosing Loppers
A simple rule or choosing the right lopper is bypass or younger branches and
anvil or hardier or dead wood. It is especially important to ensure you use the
right tool or the job when cutting greener branches as the bypass lopper allows
or a more accurate cut without crushing the branch.
Be sure that the lopper will be able to make one clean cut, otherwise you cause
multiple wounds to the branch that can attract insects or disease more quickly.
The longer the handles the more leverage you will have when cutting, making
it easier to achieve a clean cut. Telescopic handles are available in the
WOLF-Garten range to reach taller bushes.
Other aspects to consider when choosing your lopper is a good non slip hand
grip, light in weight or easy manoeuvrability and the cutting diameter to ensure
it is suitable or the branches you will be tackling. It is also advisable to have a
tree saw available when cutting a branch in case it becomes too difcult or
the lopper, you can view our multi-change tree care on page 18 or more
inormation on alternative cutting products.
