MAY SEMESTER 2010HMEF5103 - QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
ASSIGNMENT (50%)
Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to select, use and justify research tools appropriate for qualitative data collection
and analysis.
The Task: Submit a 15-20 page PILOT STUDY REPORT based on about a
week of fieldwork.
Note the following:
1. Your pilot study should be planned and carried out systematically, following the tasks presented under Topic 1 through Topic 7 of the
Course Guide for this course.
2. Your pilot study must be carried out in an educational setting, i.e. a
situation involving the teaching, learning, curriculum OR assessment
of a topic or subject.3. The study should be carried out within seven days. This means that
you should visit your chosen research site and collect data severaltimes over a period of one week, though not necessarily everyday.
4. Qualitative data using two or more methods must be collected and
analysed. Transcripts of selected data must be included in the final
report.
Structure
of Pilot
Study
Report
The assignment will be divided into two parts; proposal and final report.
The first part, the proposal, is to be submitted on the second or third
seminar, and the final report is due on the fourth seminar.
PART 1: Proposal due on the second or third seminar. (5 marks)
Your proposal should contain:
1.
TITLE- Title of your project and at least ONE reason for choosing the
proposed topic.
2. RESEARCH QUESTION(S)
- Propose at least TWO research questions.3. SETTING
- Suggest the location or the place where you plan to do the study, and your RATIONALE for choosing the setting.
4. SAMPLE
- List the respondent(s) who will be your sample for the study and
how many.
5. DATA COLLECTION METHOD - Suggest TWO data collection methods you plan to use.

ASSIGNMENT HMEF5103
2
Please get your facilitators comment and his/her approval before going
for your fieldwork. This is very important to ensure that your
methodology, selected participant(s) and instrument(s) can provide youwith the data you need to answer your research question(s).
PART 2 : Report due on the fourth seminar (45 marks)
Structure
of Pilot
Study
Report
Your report should contain:
1.0 INTRODUCTION (15 marks)
1.1 An opening paragraph describing original purpose, initial
question or questions and what you hoped to achieve throughthis study. You may start with the background of the study
where you will describe briefly your research areas of interest.
1.2 Then describe in detail your research areas of interest. The
purpose is to provide your facilitator with an idea about the
study which you plan to do and current situation in terms of
what has been done, and what you know. You may also include
a summary of a few researches that have been published aboutthe particular topic that you plan to study.
Followed by detail description on your research problem, research
objectives and research questions.
1.3 Research problem : Describe the original purpose of the study
by explaining why you want to do this research. You must have
a reason or research problems pertaining to the area of interest
that leads you to do the research.
1.4 Research objectives: Describe the purpose of the study by
explaining what you hope to discover at the end of the study.
1.5 Research questions: From the research objectives, come up
with your research question(s). You must make sure that your
questions are researchable, manageable and can be done within
the seven days of fieldwork as stated above.
1.6 Significance of the study : Write what you expect to get from
this study and how the findings could help improve or solve theissues mentioned in your research problem. You may also want
to include information on why this study is of relevance.

of Pilot
Study
Report
2.0 METHODOLOGY (15 marks)
2.1 You can start by describing the setting, i.e the location of the
study.
2.2 Followed by a detailed description of how you select your
participants for the study, how many and how often you plan to
meet with the participants. Justify the selection of participants.
i.e. the participants/students/ teachers, their academic or socio-economic background, history of your interactions with the
participants.
2.3 Provide a detail description and justification for at least two data
collection methods you plan to employ, e.g. interviews,
participant observation, stimulated recall, written protocols, documents, photographs. Justify why you choose these
methods and the instruments you plan to use to collect your
data.
Attach a copy of your research instrument together with the
report.
2.4 Fieldwork experience - Describe your personal daily encounter
with your participants while doing your fieldwork, i.e. any
problems encountered, changes made (if any), reflection,
describe your participants and the settings, mistakes made (ifany), lessons learnt.
2.5 Discuss and justify the way all the different forms of data weretriangulated, as well as reasons why the data collected took
different form(s) (such as transcripts from interviews, fieldnotes or scores from test.) Discuss the limitations of these
methods.
2.6 Data analysis: a step-by-sep description of what you did in the
process of reading, processing, and presenting data in order to
answer your research questions and to understand participants
views or actions. Describe the coding scheme you employed,
and how these codes were refined into categories.
2.7 You should transcribe and submit a 45-60 minutes of interaction
for analysis. Transcripts may be from audio/video recordings of
interviews or classroom interaction between a teacher and
students or feedback to written work from a teacher or peer.
Transcripts with the codes should be included in the Reportas an Appendix.

2.8 An important part of the analysis is establishing objectivity: youshould clearly describe how reliability and validity were
achieved. The analysis should be devoid of subjectivity, and
you should demonstrate how this was ensured during dataanalysis.
2.9 You may also describe how your research questions changed or
evolved or were refined after this process, or how your initialhunches about the setting changed as a result of the analysis.
Remember that the research process is as important as the
product of the research.
3.0FINDINGS (10 marks)
3.1 Findings and interpretation of data present your findingsbased on your data. Refrain from making your own
assumptions. Present your findings, message or argument under
categories that emerged from the data. These can be
substantiated with vignettes or stories or metaphors illustrating
participants' views.
3.2 Present the findings in a way that the reader/facilitator
understands the everyday events in the life of the participants.
4.0CONCLUSIONS (5 marks)
4.1 Conclusion - Be original and creative with your closing
paragraph. For example, you could compare your findings with
other related research, giving your opinion based on your
knowledge/experience and/or whether the findings meet your
expectation.
4.2 Based on your conclusion, write simple yet workable
suggestions on how the study area or topic may be extended and
how limitations in the pilot study may be addressed in a futurestudy.
Submit the assignment on the fourth or fifth seminar.
Assessment: Marks will be given to original work, in particular, work that
demonstrates rigour and depth. Your Pilot Study Report should showvery clearly that you have understood and used methods consistent
with qualitative research. Here is a list of criteria that will be used for
marking your Pilot Study Report.
