Aloha La Pietra ‘Ohana,

Each school year, La Pietra seeks to cultivate the practice of kahiau, a selfless generosity of spirit and service to others, as a way of life. Our Annual Report honors this tradition of kahiau by recognizing the remarkable generosity of the many dedicated families, alumnae, friends and community partners who support this vision.

It is with deeply felt appreciation and gratitude that we extend a genuine mahalo nui loa to each of you for your support during the 2013-14 fiscal year. We are overwhelmed by what our enthusiastic and talented ‘ohana can accomplish when we leverage our collective energy towards a common goal. This report highlights more than the sum and total of our community’s monetary gifts and the school’s fundraising success. It also confirms your steadfast belief in La Pietra’s mission to guide our girls toward a life of achievement.

We concluded another year of milestones in 2013-2014! La Pietra students continued to thrive in our unique, girl-centered learning environment where they find their own unique voice and their confidence soars! They made full use of the outstanding college preparatory curriculum offering nearly 20 Advanced Placement courses, and pursued opportunities in leadership in the school’s extra curricular activities including student council, community service clubs, peer leadership, delegate programs, and competitive ILH team sports.

The many achievements of La Pietra’s students were recognized far beyond the walls of our beautiful campus. 100 percent of the class of 2014 were accepted to four-year colleges with a total 150 college acceptances and they garnered more than 7.4 million dollars in merit scholarships; the most of any class to date! The future continues to look bright for our next generation of graduates as La Pietra welcomes over 100 college admissions representatives each year to meet in person with our students.

Building upon the success of our recent classroom renovations, the newly designed space is being used even more creatively by our faculty who are employing teaching modalities guided by the most recent research on the ways that girls learn best! The classroom transformation project was made possible by gifts from foundations and individual donors, including a lead gift from Trustee, Lauran Bromley, a major donor and alumna from the class of 1976. Thank you once again to all of you who contributed to this wonderful project.

The names in this year’s Annual Report honor those who donated to La Pietra and helped us achieve our goals. We are proud that we had 100 percent participation from our Board of Trustees and Faculty/Staff in our annual fund campaign. Current parent support of the annual fund campaign grows stronger each year, and we continue to create a culture of philanthropy that paves the way for giving back to the school for future generations. No matter at what level, we are immensely grateful for all gifts, large and small, to the annual fund. Not only do donations to the annual fund help to “bridge the gap” to cover the difference between the tuition charged and the actual cost of educating each student; these contributions also demonstrate the unwavering support of our school by our own La Pietra ‘ohana.

PARENT FACULTY ASSOCIATION (PFA) REPORT

The officers of the PFA for 2013-2014 were: Karen Sebastian, President; Alison Anterocruz, Vice President/Treasurer; and Jan Fried, Secretary.

The Parent Faculty Association strives to connect and strengthen our La Pietra ‘ohana through hosting special events during the school year and holding monthly meetings to keep parents informed of activities and programs going on in the classroom and at the school. We welcome and appreciate the enthusiastic support of all our wonderful parents and count on them to make these esprit de corps building events and relationships a part of our La Pietra community.

Dedicated parents came together this year to carry on longstanding traditions that everyone at our school has come to know and love. Through countless volunteer hours of service and cheerful giving, they sustained the ever-popular monthly Lunch by Moms (and Dads!) event where parent volunteers make a delicious meal for the whole school to enjoy together, as well as our end-of-term Final Exam Breakfasts that give test takers a great start on those busy days. Additionally, thanks to our wonderful PFA volunteers, the class of 2014 was honored with a gorgeous graduation reception in the fountain courtyard after their commencement ceremony on the Great Lawn.

For our La Pietra families, featured events included the annual Mother/Daughter “Hats Off ” Celebration and the Father/Daughter Event. We assisted in La Pietra’s community outreach by hosting Special Guest Day, a wonderful interactive experience for Oahu public schools’ special needs students. We also provided hospitality and refreshments for prospective students and their families at Admissions Open House events. The annual PFA “Fun”raiser was held to garner funds to support our association and various grade level activities.

Our volunteers were also part of successful major fundraising efforts here at La Pietra with Sunset Jazz, the Annual Fund campaign, “Plant a Seed for Your Daughter’s Future”, and HOOPLA, our largest yearly fundraiser for the financial assistance program. These collaborative efforts deepened our ohana’s connection to La Pietra and strengthened ties to the school that will last far into the future!

On behalf of the PFA officers, thank you for supporting the Parent Faculty Association with your gifts of time, talent and treasure.

Mahalo Nui Loa!

The faculty and staff gifts send a strong message to our community that our La Pietra ‘ohana believes in and stand behind the school’s vision, commitment, and belief. La Pietra is proud to announce that 100% of faculty and staff made a donation to the annual fund during the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

La Pietra’s Special EventsLa Pietra’s two flagship special events, HOOPLA and Sunset Jazz, set fundraising records. Mahalo to our supporters, donors, and volunteers who helped to make these magical evenings so successful.

HOOPLA 2014 – Dancing Queen, a disco night

For decades HOOPLA has been one of the premier fundraising events in Honolulu. HOOPLA was one of the first to incorporate an auction into its event and was also the first to use electronic bidding for all facets of the program. All proceeds from HOOPLA support La Pietra’s financial aid program, which provides tuition assistance for families who would not otherwise be able to attend our school.
