BACK TO THE 305Sophomore forward Shekinah Rachel comes home to Miami for the season- opening contest against the Hurricanes. Rachel prepped at Miami Senior High School where as a junior, she averaged 9.4 PPG and 14.5 RPG while shooting 53% from the field. As a senior, she was a part of a team that went 28-6 overall and a perfect 10-0 in Class 9A District 14.

ELITE ATHLETICISMFreshman Khalela (K.K.) Hayes was the #108 prospect in the class of 2020 per Prospects Nation and was also a McDonald’s All-American nominee. A standout player at Mount Zion High School in Atlanta, Hayes concluded her career with more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 blocks. A standout three-sport athlete, Hayes helped lead the Mount Zion volleyball team to three Georgia State Tournaments while also qualifying for the State Championships in track & field twice.

JADA PERRYFresh off being named to the ASUN All-Conference Preseason team, Perry is poised for a big season. The senior averaged 7.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest in her first season with the program. Her 221 rebounds led the team and were seventh-best in the ASUN last season. Performing at a high level is nothing new to the second-year Dolphin; as a freshman at Tallahassee Community Col-lege, she was part of an NJCAA National Championship team in 2018.

JUCO BUILTJacksonville welcomes a pair of newcomers by way of the Junior College Circuit to Duval this season. DeShari Graham joins the Pod by way of St. Petersburg College, where she averaged 13.4 PPG, including a team-leading 16 PPG last year while dishing out nearly six assists and pulling down six rebounds per game. She scored a season-high 30 points against Florida Southwestern and posted eight games with 20 or more points. Graham started all but two of the 54 games she played in for the Titans.

Shanese Miller comes to JU after spending two seasons at ASA College Brook-lyn. As a sophomore, Miller scored 12.7 PPG and reigned in 7.1 RPG. She turned in a season-best 20 point effort against Cecil College and also had a huge 15-rebound game against Five Towns College. She scored in double-figures 14 times and recorded four double-doubles last season.

GREEN LIGHTIt wasn’t quite an 11th-hour decision, but on Friday it was announced that Hawai’i transfer MaKayla Edwards had been granted an immediate eligibilty waiver by the NCAA and will be able to suit up for the Dolphins this season. The California product appeared in 17 games last season for the Rainbow Warriors, and aver-aged 1.6 PPG and 1.2 RPG while posting a pair of eight-point performances.

#RELENTLESSMore than just a motto for the Dolphins, #RELENTLESS describes the intensity and effort on the floor. JU ranked in the top five of the ASUN in opponent points allowed per game, opponent field goal percentage and opponent three-point field goal percentage, while ranking near the top of the ASUN in several offensive cat-egories, including a league-best 40.8 rebounds per game. A 23-steal day against USC Upstate, overtime wins at Mercer and against Kennesaw State and two different four-game winning streaks highlighted the 2019-20 season.

2019-20 RECAPThe 2019-20 Dolphins posted an 18-12 record overall and a 10-6 mark in the second season of the Darnell Haney era and made their 15th consecutive ASUN Tournament appearance. JU saw win improvments both overall (+4) and in ASUN play (+3) thanks to a deep and experienced team. The ‘Phins trailed only FGCU in points per game last year, averaging 70.8 per night while also ranking in the top five of the ASUN in both field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage. Four different players won ASUN Player of the Week honors during the year and senior Shakayla Nevitt was named Second Team All-ASUN and to the ASUN All-Acadmic sqaud at season’s end.

HISTORIC SWISHER GYMNASIUM, HOME OF THE DOLPHINSSince opening in 1953, Swisher Gynmasium has undergone multiple restorations and renovations in order to provide the best gameday experience for every fan that walks through the doors and for every student athlete that suits up to take the floor.

In 2016 the venue introduced two 18-foot videoboards, mounted on the walls at either end of the court as well as a 40-foot video scorer’s table that sits at center court on the sideline. In 2018, with extensive damage having been done unto the building by Hurricane Irma, a brand-new roof and floor were installed.

With that came a new paint job of the basketball court that included the Athletic Department’s new branding. The locker rooms housed in the building were completely re-done with new layouts, bathrooms, furniture and graphics during this time as well.

The venue currently seats 1,452 people for sporting events with one side being fixed seating and the other side retractable, creating space for multi-purpose events. In addition to sporting events, several concerts have been held at Swisher Gymnasium including appearances by Billy Joel in 1975 and K.C. and the Sunshine Band in 1979. Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson addressed students there in 1963.

Swisher has been the home of the women’s team since the program’s inception in 1999-2000. Since then, the Dolphins has have posted sev-en seasons with 10 or more wins within the walls of Swisher, including a pair of 14-1 seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17, along with a 13-1 mark in 2017-18. Overall, the Dolphins maintain 172-120 record at home all-time, good for a .589 winning percentage.

The venue has seen the Dolphins host the likes of Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Syracuse over the past 21 seasons and has seen countless memorable moments, most recently a come from behind overtime victory over Kennesaw State in February. During the 2016-17 campaign, JU strung together 10 consecutive wins at Swisher, the longest season streak in program history.

Darnell Haney enters his third season at the helm of the Dolphins, and eighth season overall with the program. During his time in Duval County, Haney has been a part of the program’s first ever ASUN Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, as well as a pair of appearances in the WNIT. His time at Jacksonville began in 2013 as an assistant coach and ahead of the the 2016 season, was elevated to associate head coach by his predecessor Yolett McPhee-McCuin. Since Haney has taken over, the program has continued its success and has defined itself by its “Relentless” personality, relying on length, team defense and athleticism to continue to make strides forward and remain one of the top teams in the ASUN.

2019-20In the Dolphins’ second season under Haney, the team posted a four-win improvement overall and a three-win improvement in ASUN play. The ‘Phins trailed only FGCU in points per game, averag-ing 70.8 per night while also ranking in the top five of the ASUN in both field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage. JUCO transfer Jada Perry ranked in the top 10 in the league in rebounds while freshman Da’Nasia Shaw led the ASUN in three-point field goal percentage at 48%. Four different players won ASUN Player of the Week honors during the year and senior Shakayla Nevitt was named Second Team All-ASUN and als became the first player in program history to land a spot on the ASUN All-Academic team.

2018-19In Haney’s first season as head coach in Jacksonville, the ‘Phins notched a 14-16 record. Led by senior Jasmyn Brown, who was named Second Team All-ASUN, the new-look Dolphins found their rhythm around the beginning of conference play, picking up big wins over FIU and Mercer to conclude non-conference play as part of a three-game winnings streak, and rattled off wins over Liberty, Kennesaw State. JU swept the River City Rumble over crosstown rival UNF to extend the Dolphin’s winning streak in the series to 14, the longest by either team in the series.

2017-18In the 2017-18 season, Jacksonville won a program-best 24 games (24-9), eclipsing the previous record of 23 tied by the previous year’s squad, en route to 16 new program records and a second WNIT trip. The team led the ASUN in 10 different statistical categories, including rebounds and blocked shots. The Dolphins ranked among the nation’s best in offensive rebounds per game (7th), rebound margin (27th), and three-point field goal defense (28.4). Kayla Gordon claimed ASUN DPOY honors and was named All-ASUN First Team, while Jasmyn Brown claimed Second Team ASUN All-Conference honors.

2016-17Ahead of the 2016-17 season, Haney was elevated the to position of associate head coach. The Dolphins followed up their NCAA Tourament season by posting, at the time, a program-best 23-9 mark and made the program’s first ever trip to the WNIT. Sherranda Reddick and Christin Mercer earned spots on the All-ASUN First Team, while Brandi Buie claimed a spot on All-ASUN Second Team.

2015-16In a historic 22-11 season, Haney helped lead the Dolphins to their program’s first ASUN Tournament Championship and first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Led by ASUN Newcomer of the Year Christin Mercer and ASUN All-Freshman Team Honoree Jasmyn Brown, the Dolphins upset perrenial powerhouse FGCU in the championship game and were ranked at or near the top of the league in numerous statistical categories. Sherran-da Reddick was named to the All-ASUN First Team while Mercer joined Briona Brown on the All-ASUN Second Team.

2014-15The 2014-15 season saw the Dolphins post a 12-17 mark and post two separate three-game winning streak and sweep the River City Rumble against UNF in addition to sweeping the season series with Kennesaw State. Kayla Gordon was named the top freshman in the ASUN and joined Brandi Buie on the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Sherranda Reddick was among the top scorers in the ASUN at 14 PPG while Gordon shot better than 50% from the field.

2013-14In Haney’s first season as an assistant coach under Yolett McPhee-McCuin, Jacksonville posted a 13-17 record and a 10-8 ledger in ASUN play. JU posted a season-best five-game winning streak to open league play in January. Queen Alford was named to the All-ASUN Second Team while Sher-randa Reddick was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Reddick was among the ASUN leaders in three-point percentage (39.2%) while Alford ranked among the top scorers in the league at 13 PPG.

Jones High SchoolHaney posted two stints at Jones High School in Orlando. During his most recent tenure from 2010-13, Haney turned Jones High School’s girls’ basketball into a powerhouse program in Florida as its head coach. A three-time FACA Coach of the Year, Haney developed several Division I players, while also leading the program to a pair of district titles and state Final Four appearances. From 2006-09, Haney served as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach to the legendary Jerry Howard, where he developed 11 eventual collegiate athletes, three of whom are now playing profes-sionally.

South Lake High SchoolIn between his stints at Jones High, Haney was hired as the head coach for boys basketball at South Lake High School in Groveland, Fla. for the 2009-10 school year. That season he helped the Eagles post a 10-win season in the school’s first year transitioning from Class 4A to Class 6A and facing some of the top prep competition in the state of Florida.

PersonalA 2004 graduate of Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, Haney also holds a Master of Science in Athletic Administration from Nova Southeastern University (2010). He attended Miami Southridge Senior High School, where he was a three-year basketball letterman and team captain. He and his wife, Aaliyah, reside in Jacksonville with their three children, Imani, Caleb, and Avery.
