“Storia d’inverno” è un racconto che parla di miracoli, destini incrociati e dell’antica battaglia tra il bene e il male. Il film segna l’esordio alla regia dello sceneggiatore premio Oscar® Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”) ed è interpretato da Colin Farrell (“Saving Mr. Banks”), Jessica Brown Findlay (la serie televisiva “Downton Abbey”) e il premio Oscar® Russell Crowe (“Il Gladiatore”).

Peter Lake (Farrell) è un abilissimo ladro che non avrebbe mai immaginato di incontrare una donna come la bella Beverly Penn (Brown Findlay) e di innamorarsi perdutamente di lei. Ma il loro amore è un amore sfortunato: lei soffre di una forma mortale di tubercolosi e Peter è minacciato di morte molto più violenta da colui che un tempo era il suo mentore, il demoniaco Pearly Soames (Crowe).  Mentre Peter cerca disperatamente di salvare il suo unico vero amore, combattendo contro il tempo e contro le forze del male, Pearly fa tutto ciò che è in suo potere per ucciderlo. Peter ha bisogno di un miracolo, ma solo il tempo dirà se ne accadrà uno…

Tra gli interpreti del film anche i premi Oscar® Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”), William Hurt (“Il bacio della donna ragno”) e Eva Marie Saint (“Fronte del porto”) e dagli esordienti Ripley Sobo e Mckayla Twiggs (interpreti di “Once” a Broadway).

Goldsman ha anche scritto la sceneggiatura, tratta dal famoso romanzo di Mark Helprin (edito in Italia da Neri Pozza), e prodotto il film con Marc Platt (“Drive”), Michael Tadross (“Sherlock Holmes”) e Tony Allard (“The Baby Dance” di Showtime). I produttori esecutivi sono Kerry Foster e Bruce Berman. Del team creativo dietro le quinte fanno parte il direttore della fotografia cinque volte candidato all’Oscar® Caleb Deschanel (“La Passione di Cristo” “Il Patriota”), la scenografa Naomi Shohan (“Constantine”, “Io sono leggenda”), il costumista Michael Kaplan (“Mission: Impossible – Protocollo Fantasma”, “Star Trek”) e al montaggio Wayne Wahrman (“Io sono leggenda”) e il candidato all’Oscar® Tim Squyres (“Vita di Pi,” “La tigre e il dragone”). LA PRODUZIONE

Tra amore e destino, tra luce e buio,i miracoli possono accadere.

Quando nel 1895 il piccolo Peter Lake comincia il suo viaggio per New York City, non ha neppure una vaga idea di quanto lunga e complicata sarà la sua vita o le altre vite che sfiorerà in un modo davvero straordinario. “La storia mescola la realtà con l’inesplicabile che esiste oltre il mondo che vediamo”, afferma lo sceneggiatore, produttore e per la prima volta regista Akiva Goldsman. “E’ una semplice e chiara narrazione di sentimenti, eppure all’interno di questo mondo reale esiste un mondo di magia dove la gente vive per secoli”.

Per Goldsman, il romanzo di Mark Helprin da cui il film è tratto presentava una sfida cui non ha saputo resistere. “Ho letto Storia d’inverno per la prima volta negli anni ’80 e me ne sono innamorato subito”, ricorda. “E’ difficile lasciar andare le cose che ami, soprattutto se stimolano la tua fantasia in modo così potente”. Goldsman non ha mai dimenticato il romanzo e ha passato anni a pensare come poterlo adattare per il cinema. “Il libro di Mark è corposo, quasi 800 pagine, e nessuna sceneggiatura avrebbe potuto comprendere tutti gli elementi che vi sono presenti, quindi ho lavorato distillando quello che mi aveva emozionato di più, fino a farlo diventare la struttura base della mia scrittura”.

“Akiva è uno dei nostri sceneggiatori di maggior successo”, dice il produttore Marc Platt. “La sua passione per la storia e un evento personale della sua vita lo hanno spinto a lavorare con passione vera all’adattamento fino a farne una cosa sua conservando tutte quelle caratteristiche meravigliose che hanno reso unico il romanzo di Mark”.

“E’ una sequenza molto complessa di avvenimenti - osserva Goldsman - e mentre cercavo di decifrarla, ho subìto una perdita improvvisa. Quando poi ho

ricominciato a scrivere, Storia d’inverno è diventata non qualcosa che amavo, ma la cosa che amavo di più. Dovevo portarla a termine”.

Una volta completata la sceneggiatura, Goldsman aveva chiaro che sarebbe stata l’occasione perfetta per il suo esordio nella regia e che non poteva affidarla a nessuno altro. “Significava tanto per me e mi ero sentito vicino ai personaggi per tanto tempo, capivo così bene i loro sentimenti e dunque sapevo che dovevo essere io a dirigere il film”.

Al centro di “Storia d’inverno” c’è una storia d’amore che attraversa un secolo. “Parla di un innamoramento e di un amore perduto. E’ follemente romantico”, afferma Goldsman. “Il protagonista, Peter Lake, è un uomo affascinante che vive oltre 100 anni perché ama una donna, Beverly Penn. Un amore così forte è qualcosa che credo tutti amiamo immaginare per noi stessi e, quando ho realizzato il film, ho voluto che esprimesse sentimenti ed emozioni più forti, più estreme di quelle della vita reale”.

Colin Farrell, che interpreta Peter, dice: “Se mi chiedete quello che è alla base di una buona storia d’amore rispondo che è quando la gente si perde nell’amore, quando fin dal primo momento in cui si incontrano scoprono gli aspetti migliori di loro stessi alla presenza dell’altra persona. E’ questo che succede a Peter quando incontra Beverly. Immediatamente. I sentimenti che provano trascendono le costrizioni del tempo”.

Il personaggio di Peter Lake è una sorta di anti-eroe. Quando lo conosciamo, nel 1916, è un esperto e abile ladro ed è proprio il modo in cui si guadagna la vita che gli fa conoscere Beverly. Quando si introduce nella residenza del padre di lei a Central Park per svaligiarla, pensa che non ci sia nessuno e invece trova questa bellissima ragazza dai capelli rosso fuoco che oltretutto, con sua grande sorpresa, non è affatto impaurita da lui.

Beverly è interpretata da Jessica Brown Findlay, che si è innamorata della sceneggiatura fin dal primo momento. “Quando ho letto lo script non riuscivo a credere che fosse stata realizzata una storia del genere, raccontata con una sensibilità così magica e che io fossi parte di una cosa così bella”.

Sfortunatamente, quando Peter incontra Beverly lei è gravemente malata e non le resta molto da vivere. Ma questo non è il solo ostacolo che separa i due innamorati. Pearly Soames, un tempo mentore di Peter nel mondo della

malavita e gangster demoniaco, ha come obiettivo dargli una caccia spietata per fargli pagare il suo presunto tradimento.

A interpretare il ruolo del cattivo è Russell Crowe, felice di tornare a lavorare con Goldsman dopo “A Beautiful Mind” e “Cinderella Man”.

“Non capita spesso di avere rapporti importanti come quello tra me e Akiva”, afferma Crowe. “Se ci troviamo a lavorare insieme su un set o scriviamo qualcosa insieme, vediamo emergere lo stesso disegno, la nostra è una delle collaborazioni più creative della mia vita. Questa era una bella sceneggiatura, con personaggi molto ben definiti e tutto ciò di cui c’è bisogno per far vivere una storia era lì sulla pagina, quindi sono stato fortunato ad essere coinvolto in un progetto così interessante con uno dei miei amici”.

Oltre a Farrell, Brown e Crowe, il cast stellar del film comprende Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt e Eva Marie Saint. Il produttore Michael Tadross afferma: “Tutti adorano Akiva e sono venuti tutti per lavorare con lui. La sua sceneggiatura è una delle più grandi che abbia mai letto e la sua visione era così chiara, il suo entusiasmo così evidente che realizzare il film è stato un piacere per tutti noi”.

Per la prima volta dietro la macchina da presa, Goldsman si è circondato di alcuni delle migliori professionalità del mondo del cinema, tra cui il direttore della fotografia Caleb Deschanel e la scenografa Naomi Shohan, e ha girato il film nella sua città, New York.

Visto l’arco di tempo lungo il quale si dipana la storia e gli elementi fantastici che l’accompagnano, i realizzatori hanno dovuto ricreare lo skyline di New York e i suoi sobborghi per tre diverse epoche: 1895, 1916 e 2014. Fortunatamente la produzione ha girato interamente nella città, che ha fornito location perfette e di grande ispirazione per il regista, così come era stato il romanzo tanti anni prima.

“La mia passione per le fiabe per adulti è reale”, dice Goldsman. “Ho cercato di raccontare la storia perché spero che tutto succeda per una ragione e che la perdita che subisci oggi un giorno forse capirai che ti ha regalato qualcosa. Semplicemente amo le storie che ti portano a credere che va tutto bene nel mondo… che ti fanno capire perché ci sono le stelle nel cielo”.

BEVERLYQual è la cosa più bella che ha rubato?

PETERSto iniziando a credere di non averlo ancora fatto.

Quando era un ragazzo nelle strade di Brooklyn, Peter Lake è stato preso sotto l’ala protettrice di Pearly Soames che gli insegna a rubare. Ma quando lo incontriamo nel 1916, Peter ha capito quanto brutale e crudele sia il suo mentore e decide di lasciare la città e sfuggire così alle sue grinfie.

“Peter non vuole più essere il tipo di ladro che è stato per Pearly, spietato e brutale”, sostiene Goldsman. “Vuole continuare a rubare, penso solo che, in un certo senso, sia più il tipo alla Robin Hood che alla Al Capone. Ma che soprattutto voglia un futuro diverso”.

“L’amore che Beverly e Peter vivono è qualcosa per lui inaspettata”, dice Farrell. “Lui è arrivato in quella casa che credeva vuota per svaligiarla, non per trovare un amore che le forze celesti dell’universo faranno vievere per 100 anni. Il loro amore è così forte che turba le luci e le ombre che manipolano l’esistenza di tutti gli esseri umani sul nostro pianeta - continua l’attore -. E’ molto coinvolgente e diventa una questione di vita o di morte”.

Platt aggiunge: "Peter Lake è finito tra le persone sbagliate ed è cresciuto con una banda di delinquenti che si fanno chiamare gli Short Tails, ma la sua innata bontà lo allontanano a poco a poco da quella gang. Ora, per la prima volta nella sua vita, scopre il vero amore con una donna bellissima che sembra irraggiungibile. Che dipenda dal caso o dal destino, queste due persone si incontrano e si innamorano immediatamente".

Peter non aveva mai pensato a quale fosse il suo scopo nella vita. “Ha sempre combattuto”, dice Farrell. “Ha combattuto contro il sistema sociale, contro la legge e anche contro se stesso. Ma quello che Beverly risveglia in lui e la forza dell’amore che nasce tra loro gli fa scoprire di avere uno scopo straordinario nella vita”.

“Colin è assolutamente perfetto per il ruolo di Peter”, afferma Goldsman.

“Puoi sentire la sua sincerità. E’ sempre pronto e attento, ma, nello stesso tempo, misterioso. E’ bello e fisico e trasmette al personaggio tutte queste qualità”.

Farrell pensa che Peter sia semplicemente “sopraffatto dalla vitalità di Beverly. C’è un’aura di splendore intorno a lei. E il ritratto che ne fa Jessica esprime tutta quella radiosità”.

Goldsman è consapevole che la chimica fra i due protagonisti era un elemento chiave. “Nel libro c’è una notevole differenza di età tra Peter e Beverly. Ma quando vediamo Colin e Jessica insieme sullo schermo non ci si pensa nemmeno perché, anche se lei è più giovane, lui sembra non avere età. Questo è l’aspetto sorprendente di Colin. Lui ha questo potere, ti attira a sé, fa sì che tu ti affidi a lui, vuoi ascoltarlo. E questo è un dono magnifico”.

Comunque non passa molto tempo prima che Peter e Beverly si rendano conto di avere qualcosa in comune: nessuno di loro due ha niente da perdere. “Beverly sa fin da piccola che non avrà molto da vivere - dice Goldsman - e Peter non ha mai amato prima. Improvvisamente si incontrano e da quel momento le cose cambiano”.

“Beverly è giovane, splendida e appassionata”, continua il regista. “E’ pura e non è distratta dal mondo, come una persona che sia sempre vissuta in una torre d’avorio, che in questo caso è un palazzo di Manhattan.

Jessica Brown Findlay, che interpreta il ruolo di Beverly Penn, aggiunge: “Prima di incontrare Peter, la malattia aveva costretto Beverly ad accettare l’idea che tante cose che vivono gli altri, come una storia d’amore, a lei non sarebbero mai state permesse. Ha molto chiara la propria vita e vede le cose con semplicità, perché non ha mai avuto motivo di pensare a lungo termine. Ma poi incontra lui e tutto il resto scompare; niente ha più importanza, se non questo rapporto che è nato tra loro”.

L’attrice ammira la capacità del suo personaggio di capire immediatamente chi è davvero Peter. “Beverly intuisce subito che Peter non è una persona cattiva, anche se fa cose sbagliate. E poi, cosa può farle? Lei sta già morendo. Non avere paura della morte, secondo me, significa che molte cose non la spaventano come probabilmente dovrebbero. Quindi lei è disponibile abbastanza da accoglierlo con calore, non gli dice di andarsene e

rapidamente la loro relazione sboccia, nasce l’amore. Suppongo che lei non possa perdere tempo”.

“C’è qualcosa in Jessie che infonde entusiasmo”, sostiene Goldsman. “E’ l’immagine della grazia ed è adorabile, una combinazione molto rara. Cogli questo aspetto quando sei con lei, poi la inquadri con la macchina da presa e quella macchina la trasforma, sembra che lei stia fluttuando nell’aria di fronte a te. E’ sorprendente. Ha qualcosa di unico”.

Peter e Beverly si innamorano in un mondo in bianco e nero, dove il bene è bene e il male è male. E nessuno è più malvagio di Pearly Soames. “Pearly è quello che ti ritrovi davanti e che osserva come affronti il lato oscuro”, dice Goldsman. “Non è il diavolo, ma lavora per lui. Lui cancella la speranza e i miracoli. Se qualcosa va male, se esiste un punto vulnerabile o la possibilità di cedere alla tentazione, Pearly è lì”.

Per la sua evidente abiezione - la cicatrice sul suo volto è solo un’allusione all’orrore che nasconde dentro di sé - Pearly brama, e ruba, qualsiasi cosa bella, compresa la luce. Incute timore anche ai suoi uomini, che non capiscono chi sia in realtà, ma preferiscono non chiederlo.

Russell Crowe, osservando questi elementi dal punto di vista del suo personaggio, dice: “Secondo Pearly, lui ha salvato quel ragazzo da una vita miserabile, gli ha insegnato un mestiere, rubare, il che gli ha permesso di vivere, poi Peter ha deciso di non aver più bisogno di Pearly; pensa di potersela cavare da solo. Poiché Pearly ha dedicato tanto tempo a sviluppare l’abilità e il talento di Peter, ora prova risentimento. Non è il tipo che cerca di affrontare l’argomento per chiarire le divergenze, per lui o se non sei con me sei contro di me, quindi deve morire”.

“Ho scritto il personaggio di Pearly per Russell”, dice Goldsman. “Abbiamo lavorato molto insieme e conosciamo i ritmi l’uno dell’altro. Lui è uno dei più grandi attori del nostro tempo. Si trasforma, è una di quelle rare combinazioni di star del cinema e caratterista, nel senso più vero del termine”.

“Pearly Soames è un diavolo di personaggio”, dice Crowe. “Ho iniziato a pensare ‘Quanto posso rendere immorale questo momento?’. Interpretarlo ha significato per me divertirmi un po’. E Akiva mi ha circondato di attori di cui amo il lavoro e di cui ho apprezzato moltissimo la compagnia”.

Farrell è stato molto felice della possibilità d trovarsi fianco a fianco con Crowe. “E’ stato bello lavorare con Russell. Lui è incredibilmente preparato e rilassato durante le riprese. Quando arriva sul set ha già fatto tutto il lavoro, infonde respiro e movimento, e poi è attendo all’ultimo dettaglio”.

“Mi sono divertito molto a lavorare con Colin”, dice Crowe. “E’ molto concentrato nel far emergere tutte le caratteristiche del suo personaggio e ha lavorato duramente sull’aspetto fisico per imparare a cavalcare bene. Fa sempre effetto vedere una persona così dedita al lavoro. Ed era sereno e a suo agio ogni giorno”.

Goldsman ha apprezzato molto anche il modo in cui i due protagonisti maschili si sono preparati per la sequenza che li ha visti affrontarsi. “Ancora prima che iniziassimo a girare, durante le prove, pensavo ‘certo loro due sono molto diversi da me, io sarei già finito in ospedale’”, dice ridendo. “La lotta era una sorta di danza di cui dovevano imparare i passi e poi arrivare a ripeterli, come se non avessero mai fatto altro nella vita. E’ formidabile quello che quei due sono stati capaci di fare con i loro pugni”.

La loro guerra trascende gli anni perché Pearly insegue Peter fin nel nuovo secolo, dove incontra la madre single Virginia Gamely, interpretata da Jennifer Connelly, un’altra veterana dei film di Goldsman.

“Io ho accettato soprattutto per Akiva”, dice Connelly. “Siamo amici da oltre dieci anni e sento parlare di questo progetto da sempre. E’ un film molto importante per lui, quindi quando è riuscito a realizzarlo è stato un onore per farne parte”. Connelly ricorda il suo primo giorno di riprese. “E’ un progetto molto ambizioso, ma lui l’ha immaginato in ogni suo aspetto e quindi aveva una lucidità straordinaria sul set”.

“Virginia è il personaggio più simile a noi tutti ed è lei che porta il film nel mondo reale”, afferma Goldsman. “Jenny non solo è una delle donne più belle e ricche di talento del mondo, ma è anche una madre incredibile ed è questo aspetto che mostra nel film. Lei ha quell’aria materna e sincera di cui avevamo assolutamente bisogno”.

Al fianco di Connelly, nel ruolo della figlia Abby, l’esordiente Ripley Sobo, e un’altra giovane che appare sullo schermo per la prima volta, Mckayla Twiggs, che interpreta la sorella minore di Beverly, Willa. “C’è qualcosa in Mckayla, il

modo in cui ti guarda, possiede una saggezza sorprendente per una ragazzina della sua età”, dice Goldsman. “E Ripley è stata grande, non poteva essere più dolce e gentile e poi ha lavorato con grande impegno. Sono state tutte e due una vera scoperta”.

Per interpretare Isaac Penn, il padre di Beverly e Willa, Goldsman ha voluto William Hurt. “La recitazione di William è così ricca di sfumature, complessa e profonda”, dice. “Il suo non è un ruolo di primo piano, ma lui ha dato il massimo. E’ un vero punto fermo e noi eravamo emozionati per la sua presenza”.

Altri grandi talenti che i realizzatori hanno avuto la fortuna di avere in ruoli piccoli, ma decisivi, sono Eva Marie Saint, Graham Greene e Matt Bomer.

Per Platt il merito di aver attirato un cast stellare di questa portata è dello sceneggiatore/regista del film. “Siamo riusciti ad avere con noi tutti questi attori di grande talento per due motivi, uno, ovviamente, è legato ai personaggi del romanzo che Akiva ha nella sua sceneggiatura. L’altro è che, conoscendo la mole del suo lavoro come produttore e scrittore, hanno volute cogliere l’opportunità di essere con Akiva nel suo esordio come regista”.

PEARLYIl vostro è quell’amore che scalda e illumina il mondo,

l’amore che può salvarla.

Nel girare “Storia d’inverno”, Goldsman e il suo team di creativi hanno dovuto affrontare la sfida di radicare una storia fantastica nel mondo reale. Per Naomi Shohan e Caleb Deschanel, rispettivamente scenografa e direttore della fotografia, ha significato cogliere l’essenza di ciascun periodo storico per il pubblico di oggi. Ha significato anche usare location, set e luci e caratterizzarli per ogni personaggio. Per le scene di Beverly, Deschanel ha progettato luci che indugiassero e fluttuassero intorno a lei, per esaltarne le caratteristiche eteree. Nello stesso modo le luci hanno accompagnato il personaggio di Peter.

“Nel romanzo di Mark, la luce è un personaggio che non indica il bene o il male”, dice Goldman. “E’ solo forza. Anche Beverly dice che siamo tutti messi in contatto dalla luce e questa idea si concretizza nel film in termini di gamma di colori, luce naturale e, in post produzione, con gli effetti visivi. Abbiamo

introdotto l’uso di bagliori che appaiono quando interviene la magia; è solo un modo di suggerire che forse c’è più di quanto riusciamo a vedere. La mia teoria era che anche se i personaggi non possono vedere la magia nella scena, la macchina da presa può”.

Come regista esordiente, Goldsman è stato felice di poter avere al suo fianco uno dei migliori direttori della fotografia del mondo del cinema. “Quando ci siamo incontrati, gli ho detto solo ‘posso spiegarti come voglio che appaia questa scena’. E lui mi ha risposto ‘è tutto quello di cui ho bisogno’. Ed è stato perfetto”.

Il team non ha usato solo la luce, ma anche le ombre per evocare il male che caratterizza il personaggio di Pearly Soames. Shohan ha progettato il suo ambiente con toni molto cupi, con un tocco noir. Per le scene in cui Pearly incontra un personaggio chiamato The Judge nei suoi appartamenti sotto il Ponte di Brooklyn, la squadra di Shohan ha costruito dei doccioni attorno a una piattaforma che riflette l’acqua, con l’idea di creare una sorta di inferi. “E’ un luogo sotterraneo che è molto, molto profondo e solo i prescelti possono accedervi, nelle viscere della città”, spiega la scenografa.

Uno dei set più fiabeschi è la tenda sul tetto dove dorme Beverly. Malata di tubercolosi, lei è sempre febbricitante e trova un po’ di sollievo solo stando all’aria aperta. “Abbiamo esaminato tanti tipi di tende”, ricorda Shohan, “ma fortunatamente per noi in epoca vittoriana andavano di moda il Marocco, l’Africa orientale e l’Asia. Allora abbiamo studiato alcuni dipinti dell’epoca che ritraevano quelle aree in modo romantico. Il padre di Beverly, Isaac Penn, è un uomo di mondo e sicuramente avrebbe seguito la moda del tempo. La tenda per la sua amata figlia doveva essere la più bella, ma le doveva fornire anche tutto il comfort possibile per la sua breve vita”.

“Naomi è una vera artista”, dice Goldsman. “E’ andata oltre le mie aspettative in ogni ambientazione”.

“Storia d’inverno” è stato girato in tutti i cinque distretti di New York. “L’aspetto interessante e forse unico di New York, sia nel film che nella realtà, è che ciò che esisteva agli inizi del XX secolo esiste ancora oggi”, osserva Platt. “L’architettura, i parchi, sono stati testimoni del percorso della città e dei suoi abitanti. La struttura è la stessa e noi abbiamo girato in luoghi molto familiari,

come Brooklyn, come Red Hook, dove le strade sono ancora pavimentate di ciottoli, e gli edifici sono gli stessi da 100 anni, basta metterci davanti i veicoli del tempo e ci ritroviamo nel 1915. Le facciate sono rimaste uguali, ma gli interni sono stati trasformati in bellissimi loft e in gallerie, parte integrante del mondo vivace e attuale della Brooklyn odierna. E il nostro film coglie tutto questo”.

Shohan e il suo team hanno usato quello che New York aveva da offrire come edifici storici, riuscendo a mescolare la sensibilità vittoriana con gli elementi insoliti che la storia richiedeva. Ad esempio, location storiche come l’edificio delle Beaux Arts di Lower Manhattan, Surrogate’s Courthouse, è diventato il Mouquins, un grande ristorante dove è ambientata la scena in cui Peter e Beverly danzano. Il nascondiglio di Peter, nel sottotetto del Grand Central Terminal, era una libera interpretazione del vero sottotetto del Terminal, dove non è stato possibile girare. Per creare il punto di vista di Peter dal suo nascondiglio, il team di Deschanel ha agganciato una macchina da presa a un pallone che poteva essere controllato e ottenere così l’immagine di ciò che avrebbe visto Peter da una porticina (immaginaria).

Una vasta galleria d’arte di Red Hook, con i suoi mattoni a vista e le grandi finestre, è stata usata per gli interni del magazzino di Pearly Soames, che Shohan ha modificato a seconda del periodo storico.

Altri luoghi caratteristici usati per le riprese sono stati Lyndhurst Castle a Tarrytown, che ha fornito gli interni della residenza della famiglia Penn a Central Park. L’edificio di stile Gothic Revival, venne progettato nel 1838 ed ha ospitato l’ex sindaco di New York City William Paulding, il commerciante George Merritt, e il tycoon delle ferrovie Jay Gould. Gli esterni di casa Penn sono stati girati alla Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. La casa di campagna della famiglia, Coheeries, è stata girata a Coe Hall, a Old Westbury.

Appaiono poi South Street Seaport, DUMBO, Prospect Park, City Hall Park, Central Park, Calvary Cemetery nel Queens, e il Caumsett State Historic Park di Lloyd Harbor. Goldsman aveva sperato di poter girare sul Ponte di Brooklyn, ma, a causa della temperature andata sotto lo zero, non è stato possibile. Così una porzione di ponte è stata ricostruita in teatro a Oyster Bay, con il blue screen per cogliere lo skyline della città.

“Adoro girare film a New York”, ammette il regista. “Sono cresciuto lì e sono convinto che il luogo in cui giri influisce non solo sulle location o l’estetica, ma anche sul tono della piéce e l’umore delle persone con cui stai lavorando. Secondo me, New York è davvero una presenza forte in un film, nel senso che modifica ciò che appare sullo schermo. Noi abbiamo voluto tante location reali per presentare la vera New York”.

Colin Farrell è d’accordo. “Con i suoi otto milioni di abitanti di tutte le razze e di tutte le religioni, la città è il perfetto esempio di come sia possibile per gli esseri umani vivere insieme. E’ un’isola che potrebbe affogare nell’Atlantico sotto il peso di così tanti conflitti e invece la gente vive in pace. Credo che sia uno degli elementi dell’amore, l’idea di coesistere in armonia. Beverly viene da una famiglia di aristocratici eruditi che emanano cultura e dignità, mentre Peter è l’opposto. In questo senso New York appare come lo sfondo perfetto”.

L’idea di andare avanti malgrado i problemi si è affacciata nei primi giorni di lavoro, quando la produzione ha dovuto affrontare un grosso ostacolo, l’uragano Sandy. Michael Tadross ricorda: “Abbiamo avuto Sandy. Abbiamo avuto una tempesta di vento che soffiava a 85-miglia all’ora. Abbiamo avuto il blizzard. E allora? Bisogna andare avanti e basta”.

“Durante l’uragano molte strutture sono state travolte e le abbiamo perdute”, ricorda Goldsman. Le fabbriche sono state occupate da FEMA per la gente rimasta senza casa. Non si sapeva cosa sarebbe successo, ma questa è New York. Lentamente siamo tornati alla vita normale”.

Tadross rivela che la produzione ha contribuito in tutti i modi per dare aiuto, ad esempio donando il legname da costruzione dei set per ricostruire le case di Breezy Point. “Abbiamo contribuito per quanto potevamo, come avremmo potuto fare altrimenti?”

Ti sta bene quel vestito.

PETERTu… sei incredibilmente bella.

Per vestire gli attori, Goldsman si è rivolto al suo vecchio amico Michael Kaplan. “Michael ha un senso estetico impressionante. È anche testardo e ostinato e spero di non dover mai fare un film senza di lui,” dice il regista ridendo.

Kaplan ha vestito Peter Lake con abiti che si adattassero allo stile di vita della sua professione, semplici, dark; non esiste cappotto che si possa trascinare durante una fuga. Beverly non indossa mai il cappotto, nonostante il fatto che tutti gli altri intorno a lei lo portino, la febbre continua la costringe a indossare solo tessuti leggeri, luminosi, estivi.

“Vediamo Beverly uscire di casa in un dicembre nevoso senza cappotto, né guanti, né sciarpa. Akiva è dell’ idea che lo spettatore debba essere in grado di vedere attraverso i vestiti e sentire che c’è solo uno strato sottile, in modo da entrare in empatia con la sua condizione”.

Kaplan ha basato il look di Pearly Soames sullo stile dei gangster del ventesimo secolo. “Quando disegnavo i costumi per Pearly ho fatto ricerche su Diamond Jim Brady. Un dandy, proprio il tipo di personaggio cui pensavo per gli abiti di Russell, bei tessuti di lusso, camicie fatte a mano, abiti di lana e cappotti. Non indossa mai lo stesso cappotto due volte”.

“Michael capisce veramente gli attori,” dice Goldsman. “Ricordo un incontro con lui e Russell e Russell diceva che Pearly si muove come uno squalo, e improvvisamente spuntarono i tessuti per creare quegli eleganti vestiti di pelle di squalo”.

I membri della gang di Pearly sono chiamati Short Tails e i loro abiti ricordano l’abbigliamento indossato da una vera banda con lo stesso nome che Kaplan ha scoperto durante le sue ricerche. “Non indossano cappotti, tutti hanno quelle giacche nei toni del nero e carbone, e tutti indossano una bombetta nera. È la loro uniforme”.

La prima metà del film è ambientata nel secolo scorso, la seconda è invece ambientata ai giorni nostri. Kaplan era particolarmente interessato a

ricreare il look dei primi anni del novecento, anche se era una sfida. “Gli abiti femminili dei primi decenni del secolo erano bellissimi, ma i vestiti da sera erano molto delicati e ne sono rimasti pochi, perché il tessuto era fragile. È stato veramente difficile mettere insieme i cento abiti da sera necessari per le comparse che ballavano durante la festa di Capodanno. Gli uomini indossavano la marsina e il cilindro e le signore abiti di velluto e seta con pellicce e accessori e gioielli vintage”, dice. “Volevamo mostrare gli abiti eleganti di quel periodo e la ricchezza dell’ambiente in cui viveva la famiglia Penn”.

Goldsman voleva che lo stile del film fosse lo stesso per i due periodi storici e suggerire così l’idea che passato e presente fossero in qualche modo intercambiabili.

In linea con queste indicazioni, il supervisore degli effetti visivi Richard Hollander precisa: “Abbiamo due tipi di effetti in questo film: la riproduzione storica della New York del 1895 e del 1916 e gli elementi magici della storia. Per la riproduzione storica lo scopo era creare effetti invisibili per far immergere gli spettatori in quel luogo e in quel tempo. E poiché Akiva voleva mantenere più realismo possibile, i momenti magici sono delicati quando li presentiamo e poi diventano visivamente più forti col procedere della storia”.

BEVERLYC’è una grande festa da ballo e tutti noi abbiamo la nostra parte.

E quando abbiamo finito qui, dopo una o mille vite, saliamo in cielo e diventiamo stelle.

“Uno dei temi principali della storia è che tutti noi abbiamo un destino, abbiamo un miracolo dentro ed è per una persona sola”, racconta Goldsman. “Quando inizi a capirlo, l’universo ti aiuta con gli spiriti guida, o angeli custodi, uno dei quali è un cavallo bianco o un cane bianco. Nel film ci sono due Angeli Custodi. Uno è Cecil Mature, interpretato da Maurice Jones, che sembra seguire Peter per tutto il tempo. L’altro è Athansor, il cavallo bianco di Peter. Credo che per quelli di noi che hanno letto il libro, lui sia una delle cose che colpiscono di più l’immaginazione. E’ bello, regale, intelligente, ma non completamente antropomorfo, non ha attributi umani sebbene ami chiaramente Peter. C’è

qualcosa di importante in Peter, qualcosa che riguarda la sua capacità di compiere il suo destino, e questo cavallo, questo angelo, arriva per aiutarlo”.

Con l’assistenza degli istruttori Rex Peterson e Cari Swanson, la produzione ha addestrato quattro stupendi cavalli andalusi per la parte di Athansor, che sono stati sottoposti a otto settimane di addestramento e ce n’erano almeno due per ogni sequenza. Il cavallo numero uno, Listo, un animale molto tranquillo, ha lavorato con Colin Farrel in tutte le scene in cui Peter e Athansor sono insieme.“Listo è un cavallo straordinario con cui lavorare e da cavalcare. Ha potenza, freni potenti e uno sterzo ABS”, dice sorridendo Farrel.

Goldsman ammette, “Non ne so molto di cavalli, ma adoro quel cavallo; è un animale speciale. E’ intelligente e docile, e ora capisco perché la gente si affezioni tanto a loro”. E sull’interazione fra gli attori umani e i loro colleghi a quattro zampe Goldsman dice: “Russell e Colin sono dei veri cavallerizzi, quindi non hanno avuto problemi nelle scene con i cavalli. Erano perfettamente a loro agio”.

I cavalli hanno anche lavorato con la squadra degli effetti speciali per alcuni movimenti di fronte al green screen usato in molte scene. Mentre i cavalli reali eseguono gran parte delle azioni nel film, la squadra degli effetti speciali usava immagini computerizzate per ricreare la natura surreale di alcune scene.

PETERE’ possibile amare tanto qualcuno

da impedirgli di morire?

L’elemento finale di “Storia d’inverno” è stata la colonna sonora, composta da Hans Zimmer e Rupert Gregson-Williams. Goldsman definisce la musica che hanno creato “follemente romantica, perfettamente evocativa delle relazioni fra i personaggi. Penso che sia semplicemente geniale”.

Platt è d’accordo. “Eravamo entusiasti che fossero Hans e Rupert a comporre la musica per il film. Hanno veramente trovato la pienezza, il senso epico del tempo e del destino, e il romanticismo che è al centro della storia, l’azione, la magia, tutti elementi che si fondono in questa avventura incantata”.

“Nel cuore di ‘Storia d’inverno’ c’è il vero amore,” conclude Goldsman. “Per tutte le sue infinite possibilità e delusioni, è questa emozione che viviamo per tutta la vita. É la nostra speranza d’amore vero, o la nostra memoria di un amore vero, che ci rende umani. Ho cercato di raccontare questa storia al di fuori della mia speranza - o della mia fede cieca – che tutto accade per una ragione, che tutto è collegato, e non importa cosa oggi potremmo perdere, un giorno capiremo il bene immenso che ne trarremo da qualche parte nel mondo”.

COLIN FARRELL (Peter Lake) won a Golden Globe Award in 2009 for his role in “In Bruges” and recently reteamed with its director, Martin McDonough, for “Seven Psychopaths.” He can currently be seen in “Saving Mr. Banks,” with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, a behind-the-scenes look at how the enduring children’s film “Mary Poppins” came to be. He recently wrapped the film adaptation of “Miss Julie,” starring opposite Jessica Chastain. The film is directed by Liv Ullmann, based on the 1888 play by Swedish playwright August Strindberg.

JESSICA BROWN FINDLAY (Beverly Penn) will soon be seen in Andrew Levitas’ dramatic comedy “Lullaby,” alongside Amy Adams, Garett Hedlund, Richard Jenkins and Terrence Howard, as well as Lone Scherfig’s upcoming film “Posh,” based on the London stage play of the same name and also starring Max Irons, Douglas Booth and Sam Claflin. “Posh” follows students at Oxford University as they join the infamous Riot Club, where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening. Brown Findlay is currently filming the eagerly awaited screen adaptation of the Mary Shelley horror classic Frankenstein, in which she stars alongside James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, under the direction of Paul McGuigan.

Brown Findlay began her career as a dancer, training with the National Youth Ballet, and was asked at the age of 15 to dance with the Kirov at the Royal Opera House in London for a summer season. It was after this, during her time of study on a Fine Art course at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College, that she began acting classes.

She made her film debut in the coming-of-age drama “Albatross,” directed by British director Niall MacCormick. In the film, Brown Findlay played the lead role of Emilia, a headstrong teenager with writing ambitions, opposite Sebastian Koch, Julia Ormond and Felicity Jones. Following its premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2011, the film received fantastic reviews, with Brown Findlay being singled out for her stunning performance and later earning nominations in the Best Newcomer categories at both the 2012 British Independent Film Awards and the Evening Standard Film Awards.

Brown Findlay is perhaps best known for her role as the convention-defying, politically engaged youngest daughter, Lady Sybil Crawley, in the phenomenally popular ITV period drama “Downton Abbey,” from Oscar®-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes. In 2013, the superb cast, including Dame Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville, won the Screen Actors Guild Award® for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

JENNIFER CONNELLY (Virginia Gamely) continues to prove her versatility as an actress with each new project she undertakes.  She received an Academy Award® as well as Golden Globe, BAFTA, AFI and Broadcast Film Critics Awards for her performance in Ron Howard’s “A Beautiful Mind.”

She was most recently seen in “Stuck in Love,” written and directed by Josh Boone, with Greg Kinnear, Kristen Bell, and Lily Collins. Her upcoming films include the Claudia Llosa-directed “Aloft,” premiering at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, and this March’s “Noah,” from Darren Aronofsky, alongside Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson and Logan Lerman. WILLIAM HURT (Isaac Penn) has, throughout his career, garnered a reputation as a performer as facile in film and television as he is on stage. He was recently seen in A&E’s “Bonnie and Clyde” and the Science Channel’s movie “The Challenger Disaster.” Hurt will also soon be seen in the upcoming feature “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.”

Hurt made his film debut in the science-fiction feature “Altered States,” for which he received his first Golden Globe Award nomination. He later went on to earn an Academy Award® and a BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Luis Molina in “Kiss of the Spiderwoman.” His performances in “Children of a Lesser God,” “Broadcast News” and “A History of Violence” also earned him another three Academy Award® nominations.

Hurt’s roles in HBO’s “Too Big to Fail” and on FX’s “Damages” both earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

On stage, Hurt has been seen in the Public Theatre’s productions of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Henry V.” He has done multiple productions for the Circle Theatre, including “Hamlet,” “Mary Stuart,” “Fifth of July” and “My Life.” Hurt’s portrayal of Eddie in the Broadway production of David Rabe’s “Hurlyburly” earned him a Tony Award nomination.

EVA MARIE SAINT (Adult Willa) is that rare phenomenon, an actress whose career in films, television and stage has spanned more than 60 years.  She began her distinguished film career opposite Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront,” for which she was honored with an Academy Award®.  She went on to star in several other memorable movies, including “North by Northwest,” “A Hatful of Rain,” “That Certain Feeling,” “Raintree County,” “Exodus,” “All Fall Down,” “The Russians Are Coming! The actress grew up in Delmar, New York and attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio, planning to become a school teacher.  Trying out for a school play on a dare, she won the leading role and changed the direction of her life.  The university has honored her with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree and renamed its main campus theatre The Eva Marie Saint Theatre.

Upon graduation from Bowling Green, she went to New York City and studied at The American Theatre Wing and with Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio.  She went to Broadway in “The Trip to Bountiful,” receiving the Drama Critics Award and Outer-Circle Critics Award for her performance.  Director Elia Kazan saw her in the play and cast her in “On the Waterfront.”

Launching her career during the golden age of live television, Saint was Emmy-nominated for several memorable TV presentations. Her first Emmy Award nomination was for an episode of the Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse.  She sang the role of Emily in the live TV musical adaptation of Thorton Wilder’s Our Town, with Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman, winning another Emmy nomination.  Her third Emmy nod came for the miniseries “How the West Was Won,” and a fourth for the Hallmark Hall Of Fame presentation of “Taxi.”  In 1990, on her fifth Emmy nomination, she won the coveted award for the miniseries “People Like Us.”

Her many other TV appearances include playing Cybill Shepherd’s mother on the “Moonlighting” series; the “Titanic” TV movie; “Time to Say Goodbye”; “Fatal Vision”; “When Hell Was in Session”; “The Last Days of Patton”; “The Achille-Lauro Affair”; “A Year in the Life”; “The Best Little Girl in the World”; “After Jimmy”; “My Antonia”; and “Open House.”  She also starred in four memorable holiday specials: “A Christmas to Remember”; “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”; “Breaking Home Ties”; and “Papa’s Angels.”  She also has been a recurring character in the animated series “The Legend of Korra.”  The iconic actress was a presenter at the 81st Annual Academy Awards in 2009.

In addition to “The Trip to Bountiful,” she starred on the New York stage in “The Lincoln Mask” and “Duet for One,” and on major stages across America.  She also co-starred with Henry Fonda in “First Monday In October” in Chicago and Los Angeles, and starred in “Summer and Smoke” and “Desire Under the Elms” at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.  Other plays she starred in include “The Rainmaker”; “Candida”; “Winesburg, Ohio”; “The Fatal Weakness”; and “The Country Girl,” for which she received the L.A. Dramalogue Award.  She also co-starred in a production of “Death of a Salesman,” with Judd Hirsch. 

Saint and her husband, director Jeffrey Hayden, produced a critically acclaimed production of August Wilson’s “Fences,” directed by Hayden, at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles in Summer 2006.  The couple regularly performs A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters,” as well as an evening of Willa Cather’s “On the Divide,” in theatres around the country. Saint and Hayden also produced the PBS television documentaries “Primary Colors: The Story of Corita,” which she narrated, and “Children in America’s Schools,” with Bill Moyers, for which they won an Emmy.

Among her many charitable works, Saint has been a longtime supporter of the Motion Picture and Television Fund and the Epilepsy Foundation of Los Angeles.  She was an early proponent of making cars cell-phone-free and created and distributed her own bumper sticker: Get Off The Phone Or Get Off The Road.  In addition, she serves on the Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowship Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Saint has been married to Jeffrey Hayden for 62 years, and they have two children, Darrell and Laurette.  This, in turn, has brought them three grandchildren, Tyler Dean, Molly Jo, and Eli, their best work so far.

RUSSELL CROWE (Pearly Soames) is an Academy Award® winner who is regarded as one of the finest actors of our time. The year prior, Crowe had gained his first Oscar® nomination for his portrayal of tobacco company whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand in Michael Mann’s fact-based drama “The Insider.” He was also named Best Actor by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Broadcast Film Critics Association, National Society of Film Critics and National Board of Review, and garnered Golden Globe, BAFTA Award and SAG Award® nominations.

Crowe’s masterful portrayal of Nobel Prize winner John Forbes Nash, Jr. in Ron Howard’s “A Beautiful Mind” brought him his third Oscar® nomination, as well as his third consecutive Critics’ Choice Award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association. He also won Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG® Awards, and several other critics groups’ Best Actor Awards. Reuniting with Howard in 2005, Crowe earned Golden Globe and SAG Award® nominations, and won an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award, for his portrayal of Jim Braddock in “Cinderella Man.”

Crowe most recently starred as Jor-El, Superman’s father, in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel”; as Inspector Javert in Tom Hooper’s acclaimed screen adaptation of the beloved musical “Les Miserables”; and as Mayor Hostetler in Allen Hughes’ “Broken City.” He will soon be seen in the title role of Darren Aronofsky’s epic “Noah,” and is currently in production on his directorial debut, “The Water Diviner,” in which he also stars.

Born in New Zealand, Crowe was raised in Australia, where he was first honored for his work on the big screen and began gaining international attention. He was recognized for three consecutive years by the AFI, starting in 1990, when he was nominated for Best Actor for “The Crossing.” In 1991, he won the AFI’s Best Supporting Actor Award for “Proof.” The following year, he received Best Actor Awards from the AFI and the Australian Film Critics for his performance in “Romper Stomper.” Additionally, the 1993 Seattle International Film Festival named him Best Actor for his work in both “Romper Stomper” and “Hammers Over the Anvil.”

Crowe made his American film debut in 1995 in Sam Raimi’s Western “The Quick and the Dead.” He went on to earn acclaim for his role in Curtis Hanson’s crime drama “L.A. Confidential.” His early film credits also include “Mystery, Alaska,” “Heaven’s Burning,” “Virtuosity,” “The Sum of Us,” “For the Moment,” “Love in Limbo,” “The Silver Brumby,” “The Efficiency Expert” and “Prisoners of the Sun.”

MCKAYLA TWIGGS (Little Willa) began singing at age two and acting at five. At six-and-one-half, she was scouted by a talent manager onstage at a local theatre group.

She made her Broadway debut at just seven, when she landed the role of Ivanka in the original production of “Once,” the Tony Award-winning musical. She got her big break in film just a few months later when she was cast as Little Willa in Akiva Goldsman’s “Winter’s Tale.” She will soon appear in the upcoming season of the hit television series “Orange is the New Black,” and has also performed in several commercials and voiceovers. Her love of singing and performing on stage has brought her back to Broadway, where she will play Little Cosette in the acclaimed new production of “Les Misérables” this March.

Twiggs was born on September 28, 2004 in New York City. She has a younger sister, Lyla. Her father, Matthew, is a photographer and her mother, Tanya, a former commercial actress and model. When she isn’t singing, acting, or dancing, she enjoys playing piano, reading and drawing. She also has a passion for gymnastics and ice skating.

RIPLEY SOBO (Abby) is a spunky 10-year-old from upstate New York. She made her Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning musical “Once,” and is currently on stage in the title role of the Broadway hit “Matilda the Musical.”

Sobo has appeared in countless television commercials and has lent her voice to various animated series and radio spots. She was also chosen to be the face of the vampire poster image for John Tiffany and Steven Hoggett’s production of “Let the Right One In” at the National Theatre of Scotland, and now in London’s West End.

Her many interests include working with macabre stage make-up and observing surgeries in her children’s veterinary class.

Raised in Brooklyn Heights, New York, Goldsman received his bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University, and attended the graduate fiction writing program at New York University. His feature writing credits include “Silent Fall,” “The Client,” “Batman Forever,” “A Time to Kill,” “PracticalMagic,” “I, Robot,” “Cinderella Man,” “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels and Demons.”

MARK HELPRIN (Author) belongs to no literary school, movement, tendency, or trend. His three collections of short stories (A Dove of the East and Other Stories, Ellis Island and Other Stories, and The Pacific and Other Stories), six novels (Refiner’s Fire, Winter’s Tale, A Soldier of the Great War, Memoir From Antproof Case, Freddy and Fredericka and In Sunlight and In Shadow), and three children’s books (Swan Lake, A City in Winter and The Veil of Snows, all illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg), speak eloquently for themselves and are remarkable throughout for the sustained beauty and power of their language. And Helprin’s academic training, military service, decades of journalism, and involvement in politics and statesmanship as an obligation of citizenship, although secondary at best, have gained some attention nonetheless.

Born in 1947, Helprin was raised on the Hudson and in the British West Indies. After receiving degrees from Harvard College and Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, he did postgraduate work at the University of Oxford, Princeton and Columbia. He has served in the British Merchant Navy, the Israeli infantry and the Israeli Air Force.

He was published in The New Yorker for almost a quarter of a century, and his stories and essays on politics and aesthetics appear in The Atlantic Monthly, The New Criterion, The Wall Street Journal, Commentary, The New York Times, The National Review, American Heritage, Forbes ASAP and many other publications here and abroad. 

As Senior Fellow of the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy, Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, Member of the Council on Foreign Relations,  former Guggenheim Fellow and Senior Fellow of the Hudson Institute, and Adviser on Defense and Foreign Relations to presidential candidate Robert Dole, he has been awarded the National Jewish Book Award, the Prix de Rome, the 2006 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award, and the 2010 Salvatori Prize in the American Founding, among other prizes.

MARC PLATT (Producer) stands among the few producers who have successfully bridged the worlds of theatre, film and television. His projects have

Platt’s most recent film is “2 Guns,” starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. Nine companies are now playing worldwide, including Broadway, London, a UK tour, Japan, Korea, Mexico City, Manila and two North American tours. Future companies include a return to Australia. Platt is producing the forthcoming original Broadway musical “If/Then,” starring Idina Menzel. He also produced the Broadway debut of “Three Days of Rain,” starring Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper; Matthew Bourne’s ballet “Edward Scissorhands,” for which he won his second Drama Desk Award; and the recent revival of “Pal Joey,” starring Stockard Channing.

In television, Platt won the Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries for “Empire Falls” (HBO), starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Ed Harris, Helen Hunt and Philip Seymour Hoffman. He produced the comedies “Arthur” and “Cop Out,” and served as executive producer on Guy Ritchie’s action-adventure mystery “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and on the Will Smith hits “I Am Legend,” a sci-fi action thriller, and the comedy “Hitch.”

Tadross served as Senior Vice President of Feature Production at Paramount Pictures from 1991 to 1994. During this time, he oversaw such films as “Forrest Gump,” “The Naked Gun,” “The Firm,” “Clear and Present Danger,” the “Wayne’s World” franchise, “Searching for Bobby Fischer,” “Beverly Hills Cop III,” “Blue Chips,” “Coneheads” and “Sliver.”

He also worked as a unit production manager/first assistant director on such films as “Coming to America,” “Black Rain,” “Ghost,” “Trading Places,” “Masquerade,” “Cocktail” and “Death Wish 3,” as well as numerous miniseries and movies of the week.

Tadross was born and raised in Brooklyn. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Wagner College, and was an award-winning photojournalist before starting his film career as a camera trainee and assistant film editor.

TONY ALLARD (Producer) thought he had successfully retired from the film and television production industries when he and partners Matthew O’Connor and Tom Rowe sold their Pacific Motion Pictures Corp—one of Canada’s most successful production company in the 1990s—many years ago.  But, when Akiva Goldsman inquired about taking over Allard’s rights to author Mark Helprin’s Winter’s Tale, Allard felt that if anyone could translate the acclaimed novel into a feature film, Acadmey Award® winner Goldsman could.

Today, Allard resides in West Vancouver with his wife, Kim, and focuses on real estate investing, their two sons and a growing pack of Newfoundland dogs.

KERRY FOSTER (Executive Producer) is an executive with Chernin Entertainment.  Her latest release is the box office and critical hit “Lone Survivor,” starring Mark Wahlberg under the direction of Peter Berg. 

Previously, Foster was the President of Production for Weed Road Pictures, where she worked alongside Akiva Goldsman.  Under the Weed Road banner, she produced “The Losers,” starring Idris Elba and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and director Doug Liman’s real-life CIA drama “Fair Game,” starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.

Foster began her entertainment career working at Creative Artists Agency, before segueing into film production as an executive at USA Films.  She later joined Pandemonium Productions, where she served as an associate producer on the 2005 horror thriller “Dark Water,” starring Jennifer Connelly under the direction of Walter Salles.

BRUCE BERMAN (Executive Producer) is Chairman and CEO of Village Roadshow Pictures. The company has a successful joint partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures to co-produce a wide range of motion pictures, with all films distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Berman got his start in the motion picture business working with Jack Valenti at the MPAA while attending Georgetown Law School in Washington, DC. After earning his law degree, he landed a job at Casablanca Films in 1978. Moving to Universal, he worked his way up to a production Vice President in 1982.

In 1984, Berman joined Warner Bros. as a production Vice President, and was promoted to Senior Vice President of Production four years later. He was appointed President of Theatrical Production in September 1989, and in 1991 was named to the post of President of Worldwide Theatrical Production, which he held through May 1996.  Under his aegis, Warner Bros. Pictures produced and distributed such films as “Presumed Innocent,” “GoodFellas,” “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” the Oscar®-winning Best Picture “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Batman Forever,” “Under Siege,” “Malcolm X,” “The Bodyguard,” “JFK,” “The Fugitive,” “Dave,” “Disclosure,” “The Pelican Brief,” “Outbreak,” “The Client,” “A Time to Kill,” and “Twister.”

In May of 1996, Berman started Plan B Entertainment, an independent motion picture company at Warner Bros. Pictures. He was named Chairman and CEO of Village Roadshow Pictures in February 1998.

CALEB DESCHANEL (Director of Photography) is a five-time Academy Award® nominee, for his work on “The Passion of the Christ,” “Fly Away Home,” “The Natural,” “The Right Stuff” and “The Patriot,” the latter of which also earned him an American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement. His photography for “The Black Stallion” stunned audiences with its beauty, and brought him a BAFTA nomination. In addition, he received the National Society of Film Critics Award for cinematography in 1979 for his work on both “The Black Stallion” and “Being There.”

Deschanel’s other credits include “Anna and the King,” “The Hunted,” “Message in a Bottle,” “Hope Floats,” “More American Graffiti,” “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” “The Slugger’s Wife,” “It Could Happen to You,” “National

Treasure,” “Killshot,” “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “My Sister’s Keeper,” and “Dream House.” He most recently photographed “Jack Reacher” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.”

His credits as a director include “The Escape Artist,” “Crusoe” and a number of short films. His short film “Trains” won the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival, and the short “Valley Forge” has been shown around the world by the United States Information Agency. He also directed several episodes of the television series “Twin Peaks,” “Law & Order: Trial by Jury” and “Bones.”

Deschanel graduated from Johns Hopkins University and studied at the University of Southern California Film School and the American Film Institute before interning with cinematographer Gordon Willis. Deschanel began his career in commercials, short subjects and documentaries.

NAOMI SHOHAN (Production Designer) has previously worked with “Winter’s Tale” director Akiva Goldsman on the films “I Am Legend” and “Constantine,” both of which were written and produced by Goldsman and directed by Francis Lawrence. She received BAFTA and Art Directors Guild Award nominations for her designs in the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “American Beauty,” directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening, and an Art Directors’ Guild nomination for her design of “The Lovely Bones,” Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s bestselling novel.

Most recently, Shohan designed the upcoming “Equalizer,” starring Denzel Washington, for director Antoine Fuqua, for whom she also designed “Training Day,” starring Washington and Ethan Hawke; “Tears of the Sun,” starring Bruce Willis; and “The Replacement Killers.”

Her other credits include “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” a Jerry Bruckheimer production directed by Jon Turtletaub; “Sweet November”; “Playing God”; “Feeling Minnesota”; “Must Love Dogs”; and “Zebrahead,” directed by Anthony Drazan.

In addition to her work in feature films, Shohan has designed sets for such made-for-television films as “The Miraculous Year,” which was directed by

WAYNE WAHRMAN (Editor) has collaborated with producer Akiva Goldsman twice before, on the box office hit “I Am Legend,” starring Will Smith, and the action thriller “Constantine, both directed by Francis Lawrence.            His credits include the Robert Zemeckis produced sci-fi family film “Mars Needs Moms,” directed by Simon Wells, and Scott Derrickson’s sci-fi thriller “the Day the Earth Stood Still.”  Wahrman has also collaborated with Steven Zaillian on all three features the filmmaker has directed to date: “All the King’s Men,” “A Civil Action” and “Searching for Bobby Fischer.”          In addition, Wahrman edited both “Charlie’s Angels” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” directed by McG, as well as the World war II submarine drama “U-571.” Among his other film credits are “The Time Machine,” “The Education of Little Tree,” “2 Days in the Valley” and “The Last of the Mohicans.”

Wahrman was raised in Richmond, Virginia, and earned a degree in motion picture production from UCLA, where one of his student projects received the Jim Morrison Award for Best Film.

TIM SQUYRES (Editor) has edited 12 films for director Ang Lee, including his most recent, “Life of Pi,” which garnered Squyres Academy Award®, BAFTA Award, American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Award and Broadcast Film Critics Association Award nominations. He also cut Lee’s “Pushing Hands”; “The Wedding Banquet”; “Eat Drink Man Woman”; “Sense and Sensibility”; “The Ice Storm”; “Ride with the Devil”; the short “Chosen” (part of the “The Hire” series of BMW Internet short features starring Clive Owen)”; “The Hulk”; “Lust, Caution”; “Taking Woodstock”; and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” for which Squyres earned an Academy Award®, BAFTA Award, Hong Kong Film Award and Eddie Award nominations, as well as Taiwan’s Golden Horse Award. He was again an Eddie Award nominee for his work on Robert Altman’s Academy Award-winning “Gosford Park,” which also earned Squyres an American Film Institute (AFI) Award nomination.

He also edited television documentaries for Bill Moyers, including “What Can We Do About Violence?” and “Moyers on Addiction: Close to Home,” as well as docs for Michael Moore, ESPN, and VH1, and also television commercials and music videos.

MICHAEL KAPLAN (Costume Designer) won a BAFTA Award for his costume designs for Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking futuristic drama “Blade Runner.” He set off a fashion trend for an entire generation with his costume designs for his next film, Adrian Lyne’s “Flashdance.”

Kaplan most recently designed the costumes for J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch, and Brad Bird’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” starring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner. Kaplan reunited with director Ridley Scott to design the costumes for “Matchstick Men.” In addition, he has been the costume designer of choice for director David Fincher on the films “Panic Room,” “Fight Club,” “The Game” and “Se7en,” and for Michael Bay on “Pearl Harbor” and “Armageddon.” Kaplan also designed the costumes for such films as Edward Norton’s directorial debut “Keeping the Faith,” Harold Becker’s “Malice,” Jeremiah Chechik’s “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” and Taylor Hackford’s “Against All Odds.”

Kaplan’s costume designs will next be seen in J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated “Star Wars: Episode VII,” the next chapter in George Lucas’s blockbuster sci-fi franchise.

HANS ZIMMER (Composer) has scored more than 100 films, which have, combined, grossed over 22 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. He has been honored with an Academy Award®, two Golden Globes®, three Grammys®, an American Music Award, and a Tony® Award. In 2003, ASCAP presented him with the prestigious Henry Mancini award for Lifetime Achievement for his impressive and influential body of work. He also received his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2010.

Some of his most recent works include Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave”; Ron Howard’s “Rush”; Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel”; History Channel’s miniseries “The Bible”; the Christopher Nolan-directed films “Inception,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises”; and Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” Upcoming titles include “Son of God,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar.”

RUPERT GREGSON-WILLIAMS (Composer) is an award-winning British film score composer. Educated at St. John’s College choir school in Cambridge, and at Lancing College, he is a former member of Hans Zimmer’s Media Ventures team of composers.

His filmography includes “Hotel Rwanda,” for which he was awarded the European Film Composer Award, “Over the Hedge,” “Bee Movie,” “Zookeeper,” “Made of Honor,” “Bedtime Stories” and many others. He has a long-term working relationship with Adam Sandler and composes for all his movies.
