STEWARDSHIP & MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

02

In today’s gospel reading the Twelve hear Jesus speak these words: “whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” This is the first time Matthew mentions the word “cross” in his gospel, and it is not in direct reference to Jesus’ crucifixion but as a prerequisite to following him. Good stewards recognize that the call to discipleship requires them to “take up the cross” and align their goals in life and their fate with that of Jesus, that is, with suffering, opposition, resistance and even death. Reflect this week on the crosses you need to take up daily in order to comprehend the way of Jesus Christ.

a sad goodbye !

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our head sac-ristan, Brad Thomasee. Brad has served Our Lady of Fatima Parish in various ministries for many years under the pastor-ship of Msgr. Sigur, Msgr. Green, Msgr. Provost (now Bishop Provost) and Fr. Russo. He began his ministry in 1988 as a lector and Eu-charistic Minister. Given his extensive knowledge of liturgy, Brad was asked by Msgr. Green to become head sacristan, a position which has come to in-clude the training of all altar servers, lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. Brad will begin his new du-ties as sacristan at St. Anne in Youngsville on July 1. In Brad’s own words: “I have enjoyed 32 wonderful and spirit filled years at Our Lady of Fatima. Even though I won’t physically be at Fatima, my heart will remain with it’s wonderful parishioners and former clergy. Thank all of you who have helped me grow in my vocation as sacristan. You have truly become a family to me. God bless and love you and your beautiful families. You will always be in my heart and in my prayers!”

We all experience the temptations of the Devil who tries to divert us from the path to eternal life. People who know “how to overcome these temptations immerse themselves in the immense Being of God as in an ocean of grace, strength and love; they penetrate the divine secrets with heightened clarity, and understand them even though they cannot understand them fully.” * Generous self-giving identifies us with the holiness of God. God takes us to Himself and fills us with His gifts. Sister Lúcia calls this an ennoblement of the person with the “virtue of God.” Saint Paul speaks about this ennoblement in 1 Corinthians 2:9-12: No eye has seen, no ear has heard what God has prepared for those who love Him. God gives us the gift of His Spirit to understand the gifts that the Lord has given us. (See Matthew 11:26-27.) When God communicates Himself, “such communication requires faithful correspondence on the part of the person who receives it.” Sister Lúcia writes that our sanctification comes through “natural human, moral and physical reactions …, in imitation of Christ who felt and who suffered for love of the Father.” God’s grace builds, perfects, and enhances our natural gifts such as free will, our feelings, and our own personality. Temptations from pride, from the Devil, the flesh, or the world likewise help in our sanctification because victory is ours “by the help of grace, after the example of Jesus Christ who, in spite of being the Holy of Holies, was also tempted.” Such difficult trials may agitate our weak human nature. Yet if we fight courageously, we can sanctify ourselves “and become, for God, a true praise of his glory….” (Colossians 1:10-12). Thus, since we have been chosen by God for holiness, let us endeavor to respond to the call with the best of ourselves, for our own personal growth and for the benefit of all. This is what St Paul urges us to do…. [Romans 12:6-8.]” By using the good gifts that God gives us, “our holiness develops in the love that we owe to God and to our neighbour; we purify ourselves and become worthy of eternal life, since love is the essence of all true holiness [1 John 5:2-4.]”

Can there be anyone who feels like asking: ‘But why must we be saints?’ The Apostle St. Paul gives us the answer in the following marvelous words: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us. For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fulness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him, according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will, we who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Eph 1:3-14) For this we were chosen, and for this we must become saints to be the praise of the glory of God and to share in this same glory which we receive from Him as a grace.

the angel of Fatima and the eucharist

the third visit: the eucharist & the “most holy trinity”

The Blessed Sacrament is the key to the third visit of the Angel. Once again he appeared to the children while they were out in the hills busy tend-ing their sheep. Still, they had found time to say their rosary and recite the Angel’s prayer. What more could he have to tell them? He had already taught them how to pray and express their love in sacrifice. They had been most generous in their prayers and many sacrifices. But who can exceed God in generosity? Everything God both gives and takes from us in this life is or-dered to that perfect gift of Himself, which we first savor in the Blessed Sac-rament. So let us focus upon the Lord’s invitation to perfect union with Him-self in the Eucharist through the ministry of the Angel. When the Angel appeared to them at the Loca do Cabeco he was “holding a chalice in his hands, with a host above it from which some drops of blood were falling into the Sacred vessel.” The Angel left the chalice and host suspended in the air, and prostrated himself upon the ground with the children and prayed the following prayer with them three times: Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer you the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the out-rages, sacrileges and indifference with which He Himself is offended. And through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners. Amen. The Angel then rose, and taking the host he gave it to Lucia, and to Jacinta and Francisco he gave the contents of the chalice, saying as he did so: “Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.” Then he prostrated himself once more with the children and repeated the prayer to the Most Holy Trinity three times, then disappeared. Just as the first prayer, “My God I believe” summarizes the whole of the law and the prophets in as much as it gives us in prayer form the perfect expression of the love of God and neighbor, so does this new prayer, “Most Holy Trinity” resume for us the complete revelation of the New Testament. This consists in the revelation of the Most Blessed Trinity and God’s plan for redemption of mankind through the crucifixion and death of the Son of God made Man. His death is made daily present to us anew in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and in Holy Communion. The Blessed Mother, His and ours, is the mediatrix of all graces. These two prayers, then, sum up the essential doctrine of the Old and the New Testament; they are essentially bib-lical in content. The prayer to the Most Holy Trinity is a most fitting preparation for receiving Holy Communion and a most fitting thanksgiving afterwards. The sacraments of Christ efficaciously produce grace in all those who receive them with the proper disposition. This disposition is greater and lesser among souls according to their cooperation with grace. The lesser cooperation of certain souls explains why years of Holy Communion are incapable of leading many souls to holiness: they do not prepare and dispose themselves properly for this coming of Christ into their souls. If we would pray this prayer or words and thoughts similar to it togeth-er with our Guardian Angel, we would surely benefit more from our Holy Communions. If we would pray for others, then more abundant graces would help them to respond more generously to Christ’s sacraments. How sad it is that for many souls, holy communion is over once they have swallowed the host. Ra-ther than conversing intimately with Christ in their hearts, they gawk around the Church, look at their watches and race to the parking lot as soon as mass is over. Here too the Angel instructs us to offer fitting thanksgiving to God. Traditionally, we are encouraged to offer at least 15 minutes in thanksgiving. St. Al-phonsus de Ligouri recommended an hour of thanksgiving after mass for priests. Clearly, this is the most precious time of our day, when we have God, Jesus Christ, wholly to ourselves in a ʻprivate audience.ʼ If souls fail to take advantage of His Eucharistic presence in their heart, it is scarcely to be believed that they will de-velop any fervor in their love of God on other occasions.

prayer for hurricane season O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We

live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Fa-ther. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true

spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Jewish Talmudic student. Pharisee. Tent-maker by trade. Saul the Jew hated and perse-cuted Christians as heretical, even as-sisting at the ston-ing of Saint Ste-phen the Martyr. On his way to Damas-cus, Syria, to arrest another group of faithful, he was knocked to the ground, struck blind by a heavenly light, and given the message that in persecuting Christians, he was persecuting Christ. The experience had a pro-found spiritual effect on him, caus-ing his conversion to Christianity. He was baptized, changed his name to Paul to reflect his new per-sona, and began travelling, preach-ing and teaching. His letters to the churches he help found form a large percentage of the New Testa-ment. Knew and worked with many of the earliest saints and fathers of the Church. Martyr. Entered the Franciscan University at Palma, Spain at age 15, and joined the Order at age 17, taking the name Junipero after the friend of Saint Francis. Ordained in 1737, and taught philosophy and theolo-gy at the Lullian University. In 1749, Serra was sent to the missionary territories of the

west of North America. A mos-quito bite he re-ceived early in his trip to the New World left one leg swollen; this and his asthma made walking a painful process for the rest of his life. In 1768 he took over missions in the Mexi-can provinces of Lower and Upper California, missions the Jesuits were forced to abandon by order of King Charles III. A tireless worker, Serra was largely responsible for the foundation and spread of the Church on the West Coast of the United States. Founded twenty-one missions, converted thousands of Native Americans, and trained many of them in European meth-ods of agriculture, cattle husband-ry, and crafts. Dedicated religious and missionary, penitent and aus-tere in all areas of his life. Blessed Junipero Serra is the namesake of the Serra Club, an international Catholic organization dedicated to the promotion of vo-cations, and the support of semi-narians and religious novices. Apostle. He was ready to die with Jesus when Christ went to Jerusa-lem, but is best remem-bered for doubting the Resurrec-tion until allowed to touch Christ’s wounds. Preached in Parthia, Per-sia and India, though he was so re-luctant to start the mission that he had to be taken into slavery by a merchant headed that way. He eventually gave in to God’s will, was freed, and planted the new Church over a wide area. He formed many parishes and built many churches along the way. An old tradition says that Thomas baptized the wise men from the Nativity into Christi-anity. His symbol is the builder’s square; there are several stories that explain it • he built a palace for King Gudu-

phara in India • he built the first church in India

with his own hands • it is representative building a

strong spiritual foundation as he had complete faith in Christ (though initially less in the Res-urrection

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 28, 2020

When we were baptized, we were baptized into Christ’s death. Take a moment to ponder these profound words. We were baptized into death. In every sense of the word, we are asked to die. This is not just about our final death but about daily deaths due to inconvenience, discomfort, pain, loss, or others’ needs. This is an in-credible epiphany given the way we very often approach our lives. We do everything to avoid death, let alone encounter it! Many avoid pain, discomfort, inconvenience, uneasiness, change, interference, and suffering of any kind. We put a lot of energy into finding the easiest and least inconvenient way through many things. Even holding the door open for a stranger or saying hello to someone in the store can be major undertakings. We are called to die. One of the biggest wake-up calls we can have is realizing that life is not about us! There are millions of other people sharing life on this planet with whom I have a relationship. Does my life celebrate those relationships? The most distracting question we can ask is, “What do I want to do?” The more focused, faith-filled question is, “What do I need to do?” What I need to do may not be what I want to do. However, ask-ing this question more frequently will teach us how to more purposefully and intentionally live so we can be a life giving vessel for others. When we learn to live more sacrificially, to put the needs of others before our own, and to not always seek our own self-interest, we become aware of what baptism into Christ’s death is really all about. These are the roots of virtue and the seedbed for justice, tolerance, solidarity, love, and peace. Learning how to accept all the “small deaths” and sacrifices life calls us to teaches us how to approach our fi-nal death. All deaths ask us to empty ourselves into something or someone else. Whether we empty ourselves into the heart and soul of another human being or empty ourselves into God at the moment of our final death, new life is always received and nurtured. A heart that exclusively seeks its own interest is a heart that is closed to love. A heart that pours itself out to others and is content with being emptied is a heart that has been touched by and open to mercy. It is a heart that overflows with joy. ©LPi
