The laser Raman spectrometerallows scientists to analyze the composition of many solids, liquids, and gases, simply by shining a laser on them. MBARI chemists and engineers worked for years to create a laser-Raman spectrometer that they could use in the deep sea. In this experiment, they are shining the green laser onto a sample of methane hydrate (an ice-like solid containing water and natural gas) about 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) below the ocean surface. Methane hydrate sometimes collects in seafloor sediments, where temperatures are just above freezing and pressures are hundreds of times higher than at the sea surface.

Sampling of the pH inside a single cell through SERS imaging. Mercaptobenzoic acid (pMBA) adsorbed on Au NPs dispersed in the cell is used as sensor. From the intensity ratio of the two Raman bands at 1423 and 1076 cm-1 a pH scale is built. This scale is used to sample the pH in the cell (different colors mean different pH)

Fluorescence amplification for SiO2@Au nanoshell: the fluorophore is indocyanine green, excited at 785nm, and emitting between 800 and 900 nm. Nanoshell are first coated with human serum albuminum and afterwards with the fluorophore.Fluorescence amplification increases steadily as the wavelength of the NP plasmon resonance corresponds to the wavelengths where the fluorophore absorbs and emits.
