Try as hard as we did today, the guys did a very good job of trying to keep the race close and present some opportunities. The gradient wind wasn’t very straightforward, it seemed to favour the left hand side, and the opportunity to start on starboard was going to be compromised so we decided to start on port and then tack away on starboard. Things didn’t go as smoothly as we would have liked on the gybes and we won’t be doing the same in the future. Karol Jablonski Helmsman Desafio Espanol 2007 The whole team have been working from the heart. On Tuesday we will try again, we are just very happy that we are still in the competition. It was more about match racing than picking the shifts, we were close and we knew we had to protect the right hand side. It’s not possible to make the right calls every day, this is a game of mistakes and when you manage to survive from your mistakes you get stronger. I think Desafio Espanol has glued as a team and got stronger. All our results have come from close races. We have survived the good and the bad days and that is the sport. We have a great team and a great atmosphere, we are doing a great job. Chris Dickson Skipper BMW Oracle Racing This isn’t the exit we had hoped for and the reason for that is that Luna Rossa have excelled this week. They’ve been quietly building up and clearly getting a lot stronger and out sailed us in many areas on the racecourse. They’ve had great speed upwind, enough speed downwind, started well, got the first wind shifts, made good tactical calls and done a fantastic job so well done to Luna Rossa, a well deserved win. When I look back we didn’t have any glaring weaknesses, or we would have done something about it. We did everything we could do, I thank my team sincerely as they have worked incredibly hard and they are all very disappointed. Nobody did a bad job on our team. Francesco de Angelis, Skipper Luna Rossa Challenge The racing was much harder than the score reflects, we had a gates to go through with the two round robins and a semi-final so we have been taking it step by step, working to the plan on improving the boat and ourselves. The game itself is complicated, each team follows its own path and is full of smart, talented people. You have to be clear of what steps to take and take them at your own speed. A team like BMW Oracle are so strong that when you make one little mistake, they jump all over you. We saw that in the second race of the series and importantly we have learnt our lesson. No matter how big or small the lead, we kept our focus and finished the job off.
