Ciao Robert! Da dove vieni? La domanda ci sorge spontanea visto che ti abbiamo conosciuto grazie ad un

libro di matrimoni ambientati in Grecia ma sappiamo che collabori con la Dutch Creations!

Immagino tu mi abbia posto la domanda perché la Dutch Creation è una famosa compagnia olandese...

beh, in realtà sono anch’io olandese, ma da dieci anni vivo in Grecia dove lavoro, e se richiedono la mia

collaborazione vado anche in altri paesi.

R o b e r t K o e n e Robert Koene è un floral designer prodigioso, poco dopo aver visto il suo libro Wedding Stories, ci siamo detti: “Bingo, abbiamo trovato il prossimo Floral Stars!”. I suoi lavori sono puliti, ricercati e studiati nei minimi parti-colari. Oltretutto Robert è un ragazzo simpatico, volonteroso ed estrema-mente disponibile che è riuscito subito a conquistare la nostra fiducia.

Hello Robert! Where are you from? The question naturally arises as we know you through a book of weddings

which are set in Greece, but we also know that you collaborate with Dutch Creations!

I imagine you have asked me why Dutch Creation is a famous Dutch company ... well, actually I am also Dutch,

but in the last 10 years I have been living in Greece which is where I have mostly been working. Of course I do also

work in other countries even though I have been residing here for many years.

Robert Koen is a prodigious floral designer , shortly after seeing his book Wed-ding Stories, we said: “Bingo, we have found the next Floral Stars!” His work is clean, refined and researched in detail. Besides, Robert is a nice guy, very willing and very accomodating that he immediately succeeded in gaining our trust.

Come mai hai scelto la Grecia per ambientare il tuo libro “Wedding Stories”? Ami

quel paese per la cultura e i meravigliosi scenari naturali oppure è stato un caso

dettato da conoscenze di lavoro?

Nonostante abiti in Grecia ormai da un decennio, posso assicurarti che i paesaggi sono

di una bellezza disarmante e continuano ad affascinarmi tutt’ora. A certe cose non

si riesce ad abituarsi! Ci sono dei luoghi unici, come ad esempio l’isola di Santorini...

uno scenario ideale per il mio libro. Ho la fortuna di lavorare in un paese bellissimo

ed estremamente ricco culturalmente, quindi la scelta di ambientare qui il mio libro

è stata dettata principalmente per la bellezza innata dei luoghi. Le conoscenze di

lavoro ovviamente sono forti e radicate, ma non hanno influito sulla mia scelta.

Vedo di buon occhio la scelta di sviluppare i matrimoni in diversi contesti a

seconda della locazione delle chiese: rurale, storico, “isolano”... etc. Deve essere

stata dura organizzare tutti quei servizi fotografici, la logistica dei fiori, trovare le

location... Come hai fatto a realizzare tutto ciò?

La parte più impegnativa è stata la ricerca e la scelta dei luoghi, dei paesaggi che

hanno fatto da sfondo. Questa parte è stata realizzata grazie alla collaborazione

della mia stilista Anna Maria Barouh e l’editore Stamoulis. Per quanto riguarda la

disponibilità dei fiori non ho riscontrato grandi problemi, sono riuscito a seguire da

solo questa parte del lavoro, visto che già in passato mi ero occupato molte volte

dell’organizzazione di grandi matrimoni.

Hai trovato le location in base ai progetti

oppure hai fatto i progetti in base alla

location?

Se trovi il luogo giusto il lavoro parte da

solo, lavori per concetto e ti lasci ispirare dal

luogo per le realizzazioni. Ci sono località in

Grecia in grado di lasciarti senza fiato: la loro

profonda bellezza mi ha tanto sedotto che

mi sono sentito rapire dal loro splendore sin

dal primo sguardo.

Have you found the locations in the projects

or have you done projects on the basis of the

location?

If you find the right place, the work completes

all on its own on the work alone, work for the

concept and let the place inspire you for the

arrangements. There are places in Greece

capable of leaving you breathless: their deep

beauty has seduced me so much that I felt

kidnapped by their glory from the very first

glance.

Why did you choose Greece as the setting to your book “wedding Stories”? Is it

because you love that country for its culture and beautiful natural scenery or was it

dictated by knowledge of work?

Despite I’m living in Greece over the past decade, I can assure you that the scenery is of

disarming beauty and continues to fascinate even today. Certain things are difficult to

get used to! There are some unique places like the island of Santorini ... an ideal setting for

my book. I am fortunate to work in a beautiful and very culturally rich country therefore

the choice to set my book here was dictated mainly by the innate beauty of the place.

The knowledge of work is of course strong and well founded, but has not influenced my

choice.

Having a good eye for developing weddings in different contexts depending on the

location of the churches: rural, historic, “islander” ... etc... It must have been hard to

organize all those photo shoots, the logistics for the flowers, find the location etc ...

How did you achieve this? How long did it take to achieve it?

The hardest part was the research and selection of places and landscapes that have

made up the background. This part has been realized thanks to the collaboration of my

designer Anna Maria Barouh and the editor Stamoulis. Regarding the arrangement of

flowers, I have not encountered major problems, I managed to do this part of the work

by myself considering that in the past I had already addressed the organization of large

weddings many times before.

with the wine museum in the background, a mythical

island wedding in Santorini, an exotic cosy wedding

by the beach, a wedding story by the temple at

Sounion, a Christmas wedding with a warm family

atmosphere in the natural setting of Pilio. The book

will be accompanied by a “making of” DVD, presenting

the places and the materials used for their decoration.

Both the book and the step-by-step DVD will become

a source of inspiration for fl orists, stylists, wedding

planners, marrying couples and fl ower lovers.

Che fi nalità ha il Libro “Wedding Stories”? Catalogo per ispirare gli sposi o

manuale per fl oral designer e wedding planner?

Credo che tutti i fi oristi sognino di fare un libro sui propri lavori perché si ha la

consapevolezza che le proprie opere non dureranno per sempre. È un bel modo

di presentare sé stessi. L’idea è stata quella di fare un libro sui matrimoni nelle

diverse località, abbinando un colore ad ognuna di esse. Oltre a rappresentare

un sorta di biglietto da visita per i miei lavori, credo che questo libro possa

anche essere uno strumento utile a chiunque voglia trovare qualcosa di

interessante, che sia un’idea, una tecnica, una composizione fl oreale.

Hai un negozio di fi ori o sei free lance?

Dalla scorsa estate gestisco con Anna Maria Barouh, la mia stilista, project ma-

nager e coordinatrice di Wedding Stories, un uffi cio-eventi chiamato Pink Bub-

bles dove off riamo consulenza ai clienti per decorazioni con fi ori ed altri ele-

menti distintivi. Anna Maria ha collaborato con me alla realizzazione del libro

“Wedding Stories” e non appena questo progetto ha preso vita siamo giunti

alla conclusione di formare un team in grado di off rire un servizio completo a

chiunque volesse improntare il proprio matrimonio nello stile del libro. Il no-

stro uffi cio è a Kiffi sia, una zona in cui vivono persone benestanti, così da poter

essere vicini al target che solitamente usufruisce del nostro servizio e abbiamo

un grande laboratorio nelle vicinanze dove le nostre creazioni prendono vita.

What is the purpose of the book “Wedding Stories”? A Catalog to inspire future

brides or a manual for fl oral designers and wedding planners?

I believe that all fl orists dream of doing a book on their work because they have

the knowledge that their work will not last forever. It is a great way of presenting

themselves. The idea was to do a book on weddings in diff erent locations, matching

a color to each of them. Apart from being a sort of calling card for my work I believe

that this book can also be a useful tool to anyone who wants to fi nd something

interesting, be it an idea, a technique, a fl oral composition.

Do you have a fl ower shop or do you freelance?

Since last summer I run an event company called Pink Bubbles with Anna Maria

Barouh, stylist and project manager and coordinator of Wedding Stories, where

we off er consulting advice to customers for decorations with fl owers and other di-

stinctive elements. Anna Maria has worked with me regarding the realization of

the book “Wedding Stories”, and as soon as this project took the life we came to

the conclusion to form a team which is able to off er a complete service to anyone

wanting to imprint their wedding in the style of a book. Our offi ce is in Kiffi sia, an

area where rich people live so we can be close to the target which usually uses our

service and we have a large laboratory in the vicinity where our creations come to

life.

Quanto spazio off ri alle relazioni pubbliche? Pensi sia importante pubblicizzarsi a do-

vere oppure lasci che sia il “passaparola” a presentarti?

Il contatto a voce è molto importante perchè grazie a questo puoi avere un rapporto

diretto con lo sposo e la sposa e capire al meglio quali sono le loro necessità e le loro

aspettative. La pubblicità serve solo a far circolare il tuo nome e nulla più, mentre il pas-

saparola è uno strumento importante perché se un tuo cliente decide di parlare di te a

qualcun altro signifi ca che è rimasto soddisfatto del tuo lavoro e questa appunto è la

cosa che veramente conta.

How much space do you leave to public relations? Do you think advertising is important

or do you think you are known by “word of mouth”?

Contact by word of mouth is very important because thanks to this you can have a direct

relationship with the bride and groom and understand better what their needs and their

expectations are. Advertising serves only to circulate your name and nothing more, where

word of mouth is an important instrument because if your client decides to talk about you to

someone else it means that they have been satisfi ed with your work and this is precisely the

thing that really counts.

Trovi tu i tuoi clienti o sono loro a trovare te?

Molti dei miei clienti mi trovano attraverso i miei libri, il sito inter-

net o attraverso il contatto diretto con i clienti per cui ho fatto qual-

che lavoro.

A quanti anni hai iniziato la tua formazione floreale? È il sogno di

una vita oppure un “amore tardivo”?

È stato un amore tardivo. Volevo far parte del settore dell’espor-

tazione dei fiori perché allora mio padre gestiva una compagnia

in Olanda che si occupava di questo. Successivamente ho iniziato

la scuola per fioristi prendendo l’indirizzo di floricoltura e design

floreale ma inizialmente non ero interessato... l’interesse è venuto

molti anni dopo. Pensa che la prima composizione l’ho fatta a scuo-

la all’età di sedici anni!

Do you find your clients, or do your clients find you?

Many of my clients find me through my books, the website or through

direct contact with customers for whom I worked.

At what age did you start your floral training? Is it the dream of a

lifetime or a “late love”?

It was a late love. I wanted to be part of the flower exporting industry

as my father then ran a company in Holland that dealt with this as-

pect. Then I started school for florists taking the address of flowers and

floral design but I was not initially interested... the interest come many

years later. I think that the first composition I did in school was at the

age of sixteen!

Nella tua infanzia vivevi in un ambiente naturale, campagna, mare, montagna, oppure in città? Fare il fiorista ti serve a mantenere un

contatto con la natura in un mondo ormai troppo artificiale?

Sono cresciuto in città e questo ti permette di apprezzare di più la campagna. È molto importante mantenere rapporti con la natura perché il

suo potere è forte ed è in grado di lasciare la sua impronta dentro di noi. Comunque è altrettanto importante riuscire a sentirla anche quando

ti trovi a camminare in una città o, sei costretto per motivi di lavoro o altro, a restare lontano dalla sua bellezza.

Come reputi sia oggigiorno il rapporto tra uomo e natura? Cosa possono fare i fioristi per far riavvicinare le persone all’arte floreale?

Purtroppo il rapporto tra uomo e natura sta sbiadendo sempre più. È un dato di fatto, è un passo sbagliato che non riusciamo a smettere di

fare. Il nostro compito come fioristi è quello di riuscire, attraverso il nostro lavoro, a riportare le persone a ritrovare sia la propria natura che

il contatto con il mondo naturale. Capire le esigenze ed i gusti dei clienti significa dar loro qualcosa che possano apprezzare veramente e

questo è un buon modo per farli riavvicinare alla natura e alle cose meravigliose che è in grado di offrirci.

In un’intervista apparsa su una rivista russa ho letto che secondo te bisognerebbe lavorare e concentrarsi sulla durata dei fiori recisi

perché alcuni clienti si lamentano che durano troppo poco... Non pensi che i fiori siano paragonabili al cibo, nel senso che uno va al ri-

storante, mangia bene, spende 40, 50 o 100 euro, non gli resta niente in mano, ma comunque è contento per la qualità delle pietanze di

cui si è cibato... Non vedi in fiori nello stesso modo?

Certo, io credo che i fioristi non siano solo venditori di fiori ma soprattutto di sogni e di atmosfere. Ovviamente è giusto garantire al cliente

la massima qualità ed un tempo di durata adeguato alle proprie esigenze. Sicuramente dopo qualche giorno si troverà come hai detto tu

con “niente in mano”, ma come ho già detto prima il potere dei fiori va oltre la loro durata, sono per l’appunto paragonabili ai sogni: quando

facciamo un bel sogno questo magari dura pochi minuti e svanisce al nostro risveglio, ma se è stato particolarmente bello ed intenso il suo

ricordo ci scuote, da positività alla giornata e rimane in noi.

Did you live in a natural environment when you were growing up (coun-

try, sea, mountains) or in a city? To be a florist, do you need to maintain a

contact with nature in a world that is unfortunately too artificial?

I grew up in a city and consequently growing up in a city offers you the

chance to appreciate the open country a little more. It is very important

to maintain relationships with nature because her power is strong and

she is able to leave her mark inside every one of us. However it is equally

important to hear her even when you’re walking in a city or, you are for-

ced to for reasons of work or otherwise, to stay far from her beauty.

How would you consider today’s relationship between man and natu-

re? What can florists do to bring people closer to floral art?

Unfortunately, the relationship between man and nature is fading more

and more. As a matter of fact, it is a wrong step that we cannot seem to

stop doing. Our job as florists is to be able, through our work, to bring

people to regain their nature and that of the contact with the natural

world. Understanding the needs and tastes of clients means giving them

something they can truly appreciate and this is a good way to reconnect

them to nature and the wonderful things that she can offer us.

In an interview you did for a Russian magazine I read that it is your

opinion that you should work and concentrate on the life of cut flowers

because some customers complain that they do not last long... Do not

you think that flowers are comparable to food, in the sense that one

goes to a restaurant, eats well, spends 40, 50 or 100 Euro, leaves emp-

ty handed, but is happy for the quality of food that he ate... I do you

not see flowers in the same way?

Sure, I believe that florists are not only sellers of flowers but above all are

sellers of dreams and atmospheres. Of course it is right to guarantee the

customer the highest quality and an appropriate time period to their nee-

ds. Sure it happens that after a few days you will find, as you put it with

“nothing in hand, but as I said before the power of flowers goes beyond

the duration, and are in fact comparable to the Dream: When we have

a beautiful dream that maybe lasts a few minutes and vanishes in our

awakening, but if it was particularly beautiful and intense its memory

shakes us, positively through the day and remains with us.

Una gran bella metafora! Nel tuo stile c’è abbondanza o

sobrietà? Prediligi le decorazioni che ti circondano di fiori

in modo barocco o lo stile minimalista?

Mi piace lavorare con una consistente quantità di fiori. Na-

turalmente penso anche che una composizione minimali-

sta che utilizza solo pochi fiori possa essere fantastica, ma

che non sia adeguata a livello commerciale.

Che nome daresti al tuo stile?

Io lavoro sempre con il massimo rispetto nei confronti della

natura e nel modo più pulito e naturale possibile. Utilizzo

sopratutto elementi naturali, senza far ricorso ad elementi

distintivi o che non rispecchiano la mia idea di pulizia e

naturalezza. Come definirei il mio stile? “Naturale”, credo sia

proprio questo l’aggettivo più adeguato.

In your style, would you say there is abundance or sobriety?

Does your style prefer the decorations that surround you

with flowers in a baroque style or is your style, the style of

a minimalist?

I enjoy working with a large quantity of flowers. Of course I also

think that a minimalist composition that uses only a few flowers

can be wonderful, but that is not appropriate in business.

What name would you give to your style?

I always work with the utmost respect for nature and in the

cleanest and most natural way possible. Above all using mainly

natural elements, without recourse to distinctive elements

which do not reflect my idea of cleanliness and naturalness.

How to describe my style? “Natural”, I think this is the most

appropriate adjective.

Quali sono i tuoi fiori preferiti e perché?

Mi piacciono molto le Phalaenopsis e le Vanda - a chi non piacciono?

- ma solitamente preferisco le piante verdi.

Hai altri progetti editoriali in mente?

Sono impegnato nella realizzazione di diversi matrimoni per questa

estate e mi sto occupando della loro organizzazione, della ricerca

dei quantitativi necessari, ecc. Oltre a questo sto preparando un

piccolo libro in lingua greca che spiega le composizioni passo dopo

passo e spero, durante l’estate, di realizzare un matrimonio per un

libro che conterrà i lavori di altri designer floreali di tutto il mondo.

What are your favorite flowers, and why?

I like a lot Phalaenopsis Vanda – who does not like them? - rare Flowers,

but usually I prefer the green plants.

Do you have another project in mind?

I am committed to the realization and achievement of several weddings

for this summer and I’m busy with their organization, research of the

required and necessary quantities, etc. Besides this I am preparing a

small book in the Greek language which explains the compositions

step by step and I hope, during the summer to realize a wedding for

a book that includes the work of other floral designers from around

the world.
