When technology reduces to a minimum the steps of the production process.
When the distance between thought and object is whittled down.
When creative inspiration need no longer be dependant on the perverse laws of large scale marketing.
That will be a great day for creativity and design.

Primo atto
Controlla, ingrandisce, spazializza.
A poco a poco, decimo dopo decimo,
polvere, la cosa appare come un cuore ben formato. Basta una finitura, un tocco finale e la virtualità diventa realtà. Cosa fatta;
pronta per l’uso.
Quarto atto
Copie
numerate, prove d’artista, tirature limitate.

First act
The designer, following his own personal train of thought comes up with a 3D file. He bores with his mouse into the hidden
mysteries of the imagined form. Using his keyboard he accompanies the projects’ perspective angles. He visualises,
consolidates, rectifies contours and thickness. He double checks, enlarges, adds the third dimension. Then reduces and
perfects the document in total freedom. And when all the formal values add up to the desired result, a simple click saves all
the algorithms of a potential object that is to all intents and purposes made.
Second act
A OneOff technician checks all the mathematical functions, verifies that all parameters are consistent, makes sure that the
virtual object is well made, much like the kiln expert who weighs up a jar before committing it to the hardening fire. Start!
A digital arm, carrying out the files’ instructions to the letter, begins consolidating a fractional layer of chalk powder with
a micro fine jet of water that slides over the contours identified by the onboard computer. Layer by layer, tenth by tenth, the
object grows and the substance, ennobled by the genius of man, gradually takes shape within the powder that envelopes it,
like an ephemeral matrix.
So, just like with geological time, where fractal wind and bad weather shape the sedimentary rock.
Just as the archaeologist discovers the traces of civilisation buried beneath the sand.
Just as Pompei came back to light after centuries of resting beneath the ashes.
So out of the dust grows a real object, solid, concrete, formally perfect, willed and tempered, ready to be bought or used.
Third act
The matrix of all possible shapes is cracked open. The force of gravity and the bristles brush off the excess and lo, amid the
dust, the thing appears, like a fully developed heart. All that is required are the finishing touches and what was virtual is
now real. A finished object, ready for use..
Fourth act
A desire to purchase sparks the need for ownership. Seeing it is wanting it. It is unique, but the series is potentially infinite.
And there is one other great advantage. The numbers need not be calculated in advance
There will only be copies to match the number of potential owners, and to create a unique, one-off piece, one just has to
erase the file.
Numbered copies, artist mock ups, limited editions.
The object is already imbued with the essence of the collector’s item.
Such creative freedom can only be found in a few traditional crafts, where the craft itself is the art.
The carver, the potter, the goldsmith, the glass-blower, the ceramist, the blacksmith, the engraver.
Digital technology revives the artistic stance whereby only the creator decides, of his own accord, whether the outcome is
of an acceptable quality, by his or her satisfaction or dissatisfaction, without having to submit to the complex rhetoric of
industrial processes.
Thus the central role of the production process is re-established. The creator takes full responsibility for the work without
losing his soul in the complex maze of company guidelines: that are fragmentary, often determined by perverse criteria,
irrational and dominated by the fear of numbers.

Io e
l’oggetto dice l’autore. Io e l’oggetto può dire il compratore vantando quella unicità di relazione che solo i pezzi unici hanno;
The strength of this venture promoted by 20 young designers in collaboration with Oneoff lies in its freedom from industrial
or even production constraints with regard to form.
This is how the objects on show in In dust we trust were created.
Forty practical objects that resonate like the first 40 words of a new formal vocabulary which, over time, may point to the
originality, the poetry, the function, the extravagance, the risk but also of the simplicity, the sweetness and the purity of
objects that come to light without the guilty feelings that the marketing of large and small series carry with them.
One and that’s all. Or one hundred thousand in a given time, a very human, personal time. Free from production constraints,
the object can once again entertain a personal relationship not only with its creator, but also with whoever wishes to enjoy
its graces. Me and the object the designer says. While the buyer can also say me and the object, boasting the unique
relationship that only unique pieces can establish; within the dust where matter comes to life and takes shape.
A true project because it is fuelled by ideas and courage.
A nice surprise.
A venture that looks ahead, into the future.

Print uses micro fine surfaces to create new effects with candlelight. This object is a perfectly smooth rounded lantern. The eggshell thin surface becomes
illuminated by candlelight and appears to have a pattern printed onto its surface as the light passes through its shell. The tactile quality and material beauty of
this object creates a more romantic way to enjoy the sensuality of light. When at times modern civilisation seems to forget the past nuances that light can create.

OneOffOneOffOneOffOneOffOneOff
In parallelo all’attività principale OneOff sviluppa il proprio know-how relativamente a materiali, tecniche e processi innovativi
OneOff was first established in Milan in 2002 as a rapid prototype production service specialised in the manufacture of
models, functional prototypes and architectural models geared primarily for the design and architectural sectors.
The workshop produces the models, the prototypes and the plastic models using a combination of extremely innovative RP
technological methods together with traditional mechanical and engineering techniques, all of which are available in
house and supported by extremely up to date information technology systems.
Besides OneOff’s main activity, the company is also involved in developing its own know-how in relation to materials,
techniques and innovative processes with the aim of providing support and advice to its client.
The company staff, that works very much as a team, is made up of young designers, engineers, architects with a high level
of training and an excellent understanding of CAD 3D systems, as well as working experience in craft and artisan workshops.
As part of the company’s research and development, OneOff is exploring the possibilities offered by a new production
process that exploits rapid prototyping techniques for the creation of finished products (not just as far as the prototype
stage). OneOff is evaluating the feasibility of this process by means of experiments involving a variety of different materials
and innovative technologies.
The idea behind this new process is:
An extremely rapid and flexible production process, that requires no advance stocking, seeing as production is linked
directly to demand. A process ideally suited for online sales with no geographical limitation nor transfer costs given that
the 3D file may be sent and produced locally by an affiliated centre,
Designer freedom, as all intermediate production steps are removed and the design constraints are reduced to a minimum,
A radical change in production approach as there is no negotiation between designer and consumer, the product exists if
and when someone wants it.
