introduction

Today, more than ever before, operators in the tourist accommodations sector feel the need to improveand upgrade the offer of services provided, matching them to the expectations and behaviour of Ita-lian and foreign clientele, with the objective of directing their preferences to those geographic areasable to guarantee the best qualitative standards.

The voluntary quality brands, in this context, represent a major tool for the promotion of those facili-ties which are able to pay proper attention to the care of clients, both as to dinner service and to theambient and reception services, even in their smallest details.

The Chamber of Commerce of Brescia has, for some years, through the "Italian Hospitality brand," pro-moted hotels, restaurants and farm tourism of the province who have met these objectives, in orderto foster growth in terms of qualitative standards and, at the same time, to offer to those who use themadvantages in terms of quality assurance and facility of choice.

With the Hospitality Guide of the Province of Brescia, made in collaboration with ISNART, we intendto present to an attentive and demanding public an extraordinary tourist offer covering our territory, rich in landscape and historical/cultural resources, equipped with modern sport facilities, for leisureand recreation and, especially, with accommodation facilities able to offer reception services absolu-tely of an international level.

introduzione

Brescia is located in an area of level terrain, protected to the north by hills, at theconfluence of three valleys: Valle Camonica, Valle Trompia and Valle Sabbia. The capital is surrounded by a vast province that stretches from Lake Iseowith the Franciacorta hills, from Lake Garda and the lowlands to the TonalePass, and to the border with Trentino. The city is the custodian of a wealth of history and art that spans an ex-tended period of time: its origins can be traced back to the Bronze Age, whena Celtic-Ligurian tribe settled on the Cidneo hills, but its importance wasdemonstrated when it became the capital of Cenomani, around the fourthand fifth centuries BC.In the second century BC, the Romans came into contact with the localpopulation, and in 49 BC, with Julius Caesar, Brescia became part of theRoman empire. The remains of ancient Brixia are to be found in the vast archaeological parkat the foot of the Cidneo hills and include Capitolium (Capitoline Temple)erected on the wishes of Emperor Vespasian, the Forum (the vast forumsquare) and the Theatre, an imposing building presently being restored.Since June 2011 the whole area is inscribed in the World Heritage List, inrange of the project “Italia Langobardarum: Power and cult centers 568-774 A.C.). To the same project also belongs the “monastic complex of SanSalvatore e Santa Giulia”, founded by the Lombard King Desderio, whichhouses in the Museo della Città that is situated in the ancient monasticcomplex founded by the Lombard king Desiderius and dedicated to SanSalvatore and Santa Giulia. The building is articulated around cloisters andchurches of different eras: the Lombard Church of San Salvatore, the Corodelle Monache [Nun’s Choir](mid-fifteenth century) entirely frescoed byvarious artists including Floriano Ferramola and Paolo da Caylina theYounger; Santa Maria in Solarium (second half of the twelfth century) whichhouses the famous Croce di Desiderio [Cross of Desire] and the Churchof Santa Giulia, now used as conference centre. The expository journey is witness to the history of the Brescian commu-nity, from prehistoric to Venetian. The section devoted to Roman times ex-hibits highly valued items, such as the portraits of emperors in gildedbronze and the famous statue of Vittoria Alata [Winged Victory] which be-came the symbol of the city, interesting funerary and the important remainsof the dome of Ortaglia (by the rich wall and paving decorations). The LateMiddle Ages section reminds us of the presence in Brescia of the Lombardsand Franks.

Also important is thegraphics section that documents the history of European engraving fromthe fifteenth century to the present. On the Cidneo hills rises that which came to be named the Castello [Castle],one of the vastest of fortified complexes of northern Italy, with towers, ramparts, courtyards, buildings, drawbridges and cellars constructed indifferent periods. Around the medieval nucleus, composed of the Torredella Mirabella [Mirabella Tower], by the powerful Mastio Visconteo andof the drawbridge, the Venetians built the circular towers and the impos-ing ramparts. The Castello is now set up as a public park, surrounded bygardens, and is home to the Museo delle armi antiche [Museum of an-cient weapons] Luigi Marzoli and the Museo del [Museum of the]Risorgimento. In the Middle Ages the civil and religious centre of the town moved fromthe Forum to the square now named after the Brescian Pope Paolo VI, also

VALLE SABBIA AND LAGO D'IDRO

Criss-crossed by the Chiese River and wholly mountainous, the valley extendstowards the Trentino. Gavardo has a quaint centre with old houses thatoverlook the Chiese River. To visit is the archaeological museum thatcontains impor tant vestiges of the past in these areas and nearbyLake Garda. For centuries the valley was enlivened by the ar t of carv-ing which skilled craftsmen have handed down from father to son. Themost famous dynasty is that of the Pialorsi di Levrange, known as the"Boscaì" which, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, left theirmasterpieces in the Parishes of Idro, Bione, Livemmo, Casto and Bagolino.Lago d’Idro, or Eridio, at 370mt. above sea level, is the highest in Lom-bardy and combines the charm of the mountain with that of a lake mir-rors. Its basin, of a narrow and elongated shape, opens into the ChieseRiver, marking the upper limit of the Valle Sabbia. The waters are deep, the banks are sometimes rocky and sometimessmall, gently sloping beaches. Equipped for every kind of sport, it is idealfor sailing and windsurfing. There are campsites and resor ts on its banks, alternating with typicalvillages with excellent accommodation facilities. At Idro, the Parish ofSan Michele and the Church of Santa Maria at Undas are worth a visit.Anfo, located along the left bank of the lake, is also known for theRocca, an extraordinary fifteenth century military compound, which, rebuiltseveral times and abandoned for a while, is today open to the public.Bagolino, in the valley of the river Caffaro and in the center of a basinabout 800 meters above sea level, is one of the most characteristic ofthe area, a resor t for both winter and summer holidays (star ting pointfor the ski resor ts of Gaver and Maniva and for beautiful hikes).

The Brescia "Lowlands," made fer tile by the Oglio, Mella, Chiese Riversand by the springs, has been intensively cultivated since the Middle Ageswhen monks star ted land reclamations everywhere. The land contributed to the fortunes of powerful feudal families who builtvillas and castles: the Gambara at Pralboino and Verolanuova, the Mar-tinengo at Padernello in the territory of Borgo San Giacomo, at Vil-lachiara and Barco in the territory of Orzinuovi, the Lechi at Calvisanoand at Montirone, the Fenaroli at Seniga. Notable also are the castles of Meano in Corzano and Pontevico. In thecountryside, large farms stand silhouetted, and you can see the rows

Brescia dishes are tied to the land and thus vary depending on their cha-racteristics.The spit, a tasty mixture of roast meats, served with polenta and ac-companied by a good red wine, is perhaps the most famous dish of thisprovince. Other typical main course are uccellini scappati (pork rolls),Brescia kid, beef with Rovato oil, snails, fried frogs and bose, hare stew, mushrooms, venison, taragna or tiragna polenta. Then there are the first courses: the casonsei or casoncelli (ravioli),tripe, the Malfatti (Spinach dumplings), the mareconde (bread dumplingsin broth), “dir ty” soup (with giblets). The waters of the Brescia lakes are for swimming, they are clean, andthere are numerous varieties of fish to be caught. On Lake Garda whi-tefish, pike and perch are cooked; baked stuffed tench, served with po-lenta, is the typical Clusane d’Iseo dish, while chub and sun-dried sar-dines are typical of Montisola; perch is traditionally served in restaurants

of Lake Idro. Cheese production in the province of Brescia is surprisingfor its diversity and price. The Brescia plain farms produce the famousGrana Padano. Bagoss, produced in Bagolino and of a strong mountainflavor, is considered the finest cheese in the district. In the Valle Ca-monica, Rosa Camuna, Cadolet, Silter and Fatulì (smoked goat cheese)are produced. Typical of the Garda alpine hills is the soft Tremosinecheese, from the area of the Valvestino Tombea, excellent as those ofupper Valle Trompia. Robiolas, stracchinos, chevres and many othercheeses complement the rich Brescia dairy tradition. Adjectives abound to define the production and winemaking traditionof Brescia, now known and appreciated worldwide. There are three keyareas of production, which many “Wine Roads” accompany: that ofFranciacor ta, the Garda Wine and Dine and that of the Colli Longobardi(Brescia and areas south of the city). Of par ticular renown is the “Fran-ciacorta DOCG,” defined as Italian champagne. There are also many fa-mous d.o.c. Terre di Franciacor ta Red and White wines. The wines ofLake Garda, whether from the Valtenesi or from the lower lake areGarda Red and Superior Garda, Groppello, San Martino della Battaglia,Lugana and Chiaretto. In the hills, near Brescia, Botticino and Cellaticaare produced. Red from Capriano del Colle completes the panorama. Olive cultivation on the province of Brescia is the most nor thern of Eu-rope. The extra virgin oil produced in the hills that surround Garda andIseo lakes, characterised by its low acidity, is considered among thebest in Italy and has the Protected Designation of Origin.Among desserts, we remember the Bossolà (a Christmas sweet), theSpongada (typical of Valle Camonica) and Brescia biscuits.A typical Brescia custom is drinking Pirlo, an aperitif made from whitewine, Aperol or Campari, and a splash of soda.
