C’è una nuova storia che attraversa il paesaggio domestico dei nostri giorni: quella di una geografia per-

cepibile sulle superfici di alcune sculture per l’abitare, sinuose orografie leggibili come vere e proprie alti-

metrie, salti di quota ossigenanti per superare la linearità delle nostre consuetudini, per evitare di abituarsi

alla calma piatta. Una collezione di oggetti per vivere dentro alle case, realmente, respirando con loro, pro-

getti di un catalogo che ha superato il minimalismo per anni visto da tutti come traguardo e unica meta,

e che l’ha trasformato in un momento di felicità epidermica, evitando il monacale e algido nitore che da

qualche lustro primeggiava evidente in quell’orizzonte domestico di cui sopra. Così le superfici di questi

corpi chiamati mobili, con cui da sempre conviviamo, si sono inaspettatamente animate, e sono diventate

pulsanti, quasi cangianti, attraverso un accorto lavorio nel togliere, nel levigare, nell’incidere, arrivando a

corpi dove le parole leggerezza, movimento e ritmo sono ottenute indagando la materia in tutte le sue

caratteristiche: e così il legno è tornato a essere il protagonista di una nuova stagione del design, come era

successo negli anni Cinquanta, tra Mollino e Eames, tra Juhl e De Carli, tra Ponti e Wirkkala, rinnovato rin-

verdito ringiovanito da nuove lavorazioni evidentemente moderne ma dal sapore millenario. Come quella

dell’intagliare sottili fogli di noce canaletto per definire in modo altro i volumi adatti a proteggere le tante

“cose” della nostra vita: accelerazione in forma di contenitore, Riddled, un leggerissimo diamante ligneo,

primato di un progettista con la maiuscola, architetto per antonomasia, sperimentatore puro, Steven Holl.

Come quella dello scavare un multistrato di masselli di essenze diverse (noce, mogano, ciliegio, rovere e

frassino) come di gocce cadute nell’acqua, spettacolo silente di una natura sempre pronta a stupire, da

queste parti tradotta in una panca, Ripples, che è un record vero di una mente realmente geniale, Toyo Ito.

Come quella dell’articolare esili strutture scolpite nel vuoto, disegnate da piani sottili in un gioco di nega-

tivi e positivi: nuovo gioiello in forma di libreria, Sudoku, cruciverba spaziale di un maestro sempre avanti,

Mario Bellini. Come quelle proposte da altri autori, più giovani certo, ma che qui hanno già dimostrato di

poter, e saper, fare bene: Salvatore Indriolo e il caso del già acclamato, e premiato, Diego Vencato.

A new history is being made in the domestic landscape of our day – a geography perceptible on the surfaces

of sculptures for living, sinuous maps of the terrain which can be read like altitude gauges, exhilarating leaps

in elevation that overcome the flat linearity of our routines, to avoid falling into the habit of dead calm. This

collection of objects is designed to live within the home, breathing in one with it. Designs in a catalogue that

have left behind the minimalism that had long been the exclusive objective and destination for many and which

has become an opportunity for new happiness, a departure from the cold and ascetic precision that had pre-

dominated in the home. Now, the surfaces of these objects called furnishings, which have always cohabited with

us, have unexpectedly been given life and have become animated, in some way even chameleonic, through a

careful work of removing, polishing, and cutting away, ending up as bodies where the words lightness, movement

and rhythm are obtained by delving into the material in all of its characteristics. Today, wood has regained its

status as a player in a new season of design, as it had been in the 1950s with Mollino and Eames, with Juhl

and De Carli, with Ponti and Wirkkala, renewed, rejuvenated and revitalized by new methods of processing that

are clearly modern but still hold the essence of tradition. Such as the tradition of inlaying the thinnest sheets

of Canaletto walnut to define anew the objects designed to protect the many “things” of our life. Acceleration

in the form of a container, Riddled, a weightless wooden diamond, raised to new levels by a supremely capable

designer, that quintessential architect and pure experimenter, Steven Holl. Such as the tradition of carving a

piece of multi-layered solid natural wood (in walnut, mahogany, cherry, oak and ash) to resemble drops falling

onto water, a silent spectacle of surprising, awe-inspiring nature, translated here in the bench, Ripples, which is

a real record by a true genius, Toyo Ito. Such as the development of willowy structures carved in space, defined

by slim surfaces in the interplay of negatives and positives: a new jewel in the form of a shelving system, Sudoku,

a spatial crossword by an innovative master, Mario Bellini. Such as the designs created by other young and

emerging designers who have already demonstrated their ability, their knowledge and their expertise - Salvatore

Indriolo and the already acclaimed, and recognized, Diego Vencato.

Il suo studio di New York è attivo dal 1976 e ha una succursale a Beijing per la realizzazione del Linked Hybrid. He started his New York based office in 1976, which has now a branch in Beijing, where the Linked Hybrid is being built. Steven Holl won numerous awards, such as the European Hotel Design Award for the Loisium cen-tre in Langenlois (Austria) and the AIA 2007 Institute Honor Award for the Art School of the Iowa University. In 2001, Time Magazine declared him America’s Best Architect. He teaches at the Columbia University and is the author of many books.

Una architettura effimera che riprende gli ultimi pro-getti architettonici di Toyo Ito, come il Relaxation Park di Torrevieja, in Spagna: una grande onda dolce e flessuosa, che ha conqui-stato tutti, e dopo il primo allestimento al Salone del 2005, è diventata set fotografico, padiglione per mostre a Pordenone e a Pescara fino a diventare scenografico ingresso di un edificio a Shangai. E non è ancora finita…

An ephemeral architecture similar to some of Toyo Ito’s recent projects, such as the Relaxation Park in Torrevieja, Spain: a big, delicate and flexible wave that captu-red everybody’s attention. After the first installation at the Salone (Milan 2005) it has become a shooting set, an exhibition pavilion in Pordenone and Pescara and finally a scenographical entrance to a building in Shanghai. And still, it is not over yet…

Il Compasso d’Oro è un riconoscimento nato nel ’54 su iniziativa della Rinascente per premiare l’eccellenza nel campo del design. Oggi viene conferi-to dall’ADI, l’Associazione per il Disegno Industriale. Horm ha collezionato diversi successi, come le Segnalazioni dei tavoli Tola (il ‘papà’ di Astor) e Wow!, del letto Sottiletto e del packaging del tavo-lino Take, e l’assegnazione del Compasso d’Oro alle istruzioni di montaggio e alla panca Ripples.

The Compasso d’Oro is a prize created in 1954 by Rinascente, with the aim of rewarding excel-lence in the design field. Nowadays it is given by ADI, Associazione per il Disegno Industriale. Horm received various awards, such as the Segnalazioni for the Tola (the ‘father’ of Astor) and Wow! tables, the Sottiletto bed and the packaging of the Take small table, and the Compasso d’Oro for the Ripples bench as well as one for the assembly instruction.

Tokyo Opera City Gallery hosted the architect’s first solo exhibition in Japan. Horm sponsored the event and during the inauguration, with the help of a master craftsman, showed the important role hand made production plays in the reali-zation of the Ripples bench, winner of the Compasso d’Oro ADI in 2004.

A volte le ispirazioni arri-vano all’improvviso. È il caso di Leon, realizzato da Luciano Marson dopo aver visto una installa-zione di Leon Tarasewicz alla Biennale di Venezia. L’artista crea in orizzon-tale una serie di ‘campi arati’ che cambiano aspet-to al variare l’angolo di visuale. Lo stesso succede guardando il contenitore, grazie alla manualità con cui i listelli di legno sono abbinati tra loro.

Sometimes inspiration comes suddenly. Leon is a perfect example: it was designed by Luciano Marson after seeing an installation by Leon Tarasewicz at the Venice Biennale. The artist creates horizontal plowed fields that change depending on the point of view. The same happens when you look at the furniture piece, thanks to the craftsmanship with which the wood pieces are combined together.

Half Egyptian and half English. He lives and works in New York. He already designed more than 2500 products: objects, furniture, lighting and pieces for art and fashion. Some of them are part of the permanent collection of 14 museums. As an architect and inte-rior designer he realized the Semiramis Hotel in Athens and the Morimoto restau-rant in Philadelphia. The Tide cupboard and the Blend wardrobe have been selec-ted by the ADI Design Index 2007.

Una mostra negli spazi di Material Connexion per presentare l’innovativo materiale che Horm uti-lizza per alcuni dei suoi prodotti, come i mobili disegnati da Steven Holl e da Diego Vencato. Un sandwich di legno di soli 2,2 mm di spessore, il cui strato centrale funziona da cerniera, consentendo la progettazione di mini architetture scultoree dalla grande pulizia formale.

An exhibition in the Material Connexion space presented the innovative material that Horm is using for some of their products, such as the furniture pieces designed by Steven Holl and Diego Vencato. It is a wooden sandwich that is only 2,2 mm thick, whose inner layer works as hinge, allowing the opportunity to design sculp-tural architecture on a small scale, creating an impressive formal simplicity.

Charlotte, la poltrona in midollino che Mario Botta ha disegnato come omag-gio a Charlotte, moglie dello scrittore svizzero Friedrich Durrenmatt, è stata spesso utilizzata per integrare allestimenti di mostre ed eventi, come la personale di Alvaro Siza in Basilica Palladiana a Vicenza, la mostra su Gianfranco Ferroni al Gamec di Bergamo, e ‘Tiziano. Ultimo atto’ a Palazzo Crepadona di Belluno. Una presenza di grande effetto scenogra-fico.

Charlotte, the wicker arm-chair that Mario Botta designed as a homage to Charlotte, the widow of the Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt, has been widely used to complete exhibitions and event installations, such as the Alvaro Siza solo exhi-bition in Basilica Palladiana (Vicenza), the Gianfranco Ferroni one at the Gamec in Bergamo and ‘Tiziano. A spontaneously born initia-tive, created to collect funds for the ‘Schools for Africa’ Unicef project. An event that involved the company, the showrooms, some friends that ended up as partners and Mario Bellini, who toge-ther with a special edition of Sudoku bookcase (300 pieces in nerobianco wood and mirror laminated wood) designed a small bag in mir-roring leather dressed with nerobianco wood.

Il lungo tunnel che col-lega i padiglioni della fiera è stato pensato da Toyo Ito come un fiume che trasporta persone e cose da un luogo all’atro, tanto da usare cementi di diverse tonalità di azzur-ro per dare la sensazione dell’acqua in movimento. È possibile sostare grazie alle panche Ripples, nella versione standard e in una speciale curvata, entram-be perfette per l’uso in ambienti pubblici.

The long tunnel that con-nects the fair pavilions has been thought by Toyo Ito as a river that moves people and things from one place to another. He reinforced the sensation of flowing water using different tones of blue to color the concrete. It is also possible to rest, thanks to Ripples benches, in the standard or curved version, both perfect for the public space use.

Una mostra itinerante ide-ata da Abacoarchitettura per presentare il lavoro dell’architetto come desi-gner. Una attività che lo impegna da pochi anni e che inizialmente lo ha visto lavorare solo con aziende italiane, del cali-bro di Alessi, Cletomunari, Driade, Electrolux, Rotaliana. E naturalmente Horm. Nell’allestimento, oltre ai prodotti, sono stati usati gli stand proget-tati per il Salone di Milano nel 2004 e nel 2005. La mostra è stata a Santiago del Cile, Pescara, Vicenza, Gent e Pordenone.

Ideated by Abacoarchitettura, this itinerant exhibition displayed the progression of ideas of the architect as a designer. An activity that star-ted few years ago and that at the beginning was related only with Italian companies such as Alessi, Cletomunari, Driade, Electrolux, Rotaliana and, obviously, Horm. In the installation, not only the pro-ducts were shown, but also the booths designed for the Milan Salone in 2004 and 2005. The exhibition has been held in Santiago del Chile, Pescara, Vicenza, Gent and Pordenone.

La biblioteca progettata da Toyo Ito è composta da una serie di archi disposti lungo linee curve, pensa-ti per dividere lo spazio senza impedire la circola-zione dei flussi e la perce-zione globale dell’edificio. Le sedie Cherish, nella versione grezza, ben si integrano con gli arredi progettati o scelti dall’ar-chitetto per rendere le diverse zone confortevoli per lo studio e la consul-tazione.

The library designed by Toyo Ito is made of a series of arches arranged along cur-ved lines, ideally designed to divide the space without avoi-ding the circulation of people and the global perception of the building. The Cherish chairs, in the raw version, are perfectly integrated with the furniture designed or chosen by the architect in order to create comfortable areas for studying or consulting the books.
