ARGO EN 12845 STANDARDSFIREFIGHTING UNITS
The automatic fi refi ghting unit is designed to operate when water is drawn from one of the fi re hoses of the fi refi ghting system. It should be installed near a water tank with suffi cient capacity for the unit to operate for 30 to 90 minutes or as directed by the local Fire Brigade.
The standard unit comprises:- One or more main pumps driven by electric motors or diesel
engines.- One or more main control panels, for the automatic starting of
each individual pump.- A small electrically driven jockey pump to keep the system
under pressure.
To ensure safe operation it is advisable to use a diesel driven pump whose performance is equal to that of the electrically driven pump or pumps so that the water capacity requested is available even when there is a power failure.
The control panel for the electrically driven pumps consists of: main switch, fuses, stop/start solenoid switch or star/delta starter for motors over 10 kW, thermal overload switch, manual or automatic operation selector switch and operation/fault warning lights.
For diesel driven pumps the automatic control panel comprises:- Electronic device for automatic start.- Battery charger with electronic control and ammeter.- Manual/automatic selector switch with operation/fault
warning lights.- Failure to start alarm.- Hour meter.- Pre-heat system for the engine oil allowing the engine to
develop full power on start up.
The jockey pump keeps the system full of water at a pressure which can be set by the control box. The pump has a pressure switch and pressure vessel, and comes into operation to compensate for small leaks in the system. When one or more fi re hoses are turned on, a pressure switch starts the main electric pump. If more than one electric pump is fi tted, these start up one after the other depending on the pressure drop caused by the use of more and more fi re hoses. If the main electric pump does not start because of a power failure or is out of operation because of breakdown or maintenance, a further pressure drop starts automatically the diesel driven pump. All the units have isolating valves and the manifolds have vibration damping couplings.

ESTRATTO NORMATIVAUNI EN 12845
LH – pericolo lieve: caratterizzata da basso carico d’incendio e bassa combustibilità dei materiali presenti, trattati o stoccati;
- OH1, rischio ordinario gruppo 1 - OH2, rischio ordinario gruppo 2 - OH3, rischio ordinario gruppo 3 - OH4, rischio ordinario gruppo 4
HHP1, processo a rischio alto gruppo 1 HHS1, deposito a rischio alto categoria I HHP2, processo a rischio alto gruppo 2 HHS2, deposito a rischio alto categoria II HHP3, processo a rischio alto gruppo 3 HHS3, deposito a rischio alto categoria III HHP4, processo a rischio alto gruppo 4 HHS4, deposito a rischio alto categoria IV
EXCERPT OF EN 12845STANDARDS
The EN 12845 standards defi ne the requisites and provides the recommendations for the design, installation and maintenance of fi xed fi refi ghting systems realized with “sprinkler” fi re extinguishing systems installed in buildings and industrial settlements. The clients, design engineers, manufacturers, installers, inspectors and public control and surveillance bodies must abide by the EN 12845 standards. The said standards therefore defi ne the standards forfi refi ghting systems as well as for automatic pumps, whichonly form a part of the entire fi refi ghting system. Classifi cation of risk and methods of sizing of sprinkler systemsThe EN 12845 standards divides the residential, commercial and industrial environments to be protected by means of sprinkler systems into three classes, based on the fi re load, and the combustibility of the materials contained in the buildings:
LH – light hazard: characterized by low fi re load and low combustibility of the materials present, handled or stored;
OH – ordinary hazard: characterized by average fi re load and average combustibility of the materials present, handled or stored. This is, in turn, divided into four subgroups:
- OH1, ordinary hazard group 1 - OH2, ordinary hazard group 2 - OH3, ordinary hazard group 3 - OH4, ordinary hazard group 4
HH – high hazard: characterized by high fi re load and high combustibility of the materials present, handled or stored. It is applied in different ways to process plants (HHP) and material storage (HHS); this class is further divided into four subgroups:
HHP1, high hazard process group 1 HHS1, high hazard storage category I HHP2, high hazard process group 2 HHS2, high hazard storage category II HHP3, high hazard process group 3 HHS3, high hazard storage category III HHP4, high hazard process group 4 HHS4, high hazard storage category IV
According to the Standards, sizing of the sprinkler systems can be done according to two methods: - pre-calculation method: it is applied to a plant where the
piping is sized partly by means of hydraulic calculation, and partly on the basis of the guide table given in the Standards.
- complete calculation method: it is applied to a plant where the
piping is entirely sized by means of hydraulic calculation.

NAUTILUS
The NAUTILUS tank fi refi ghting system is suitable for those applications where, in addition to the fi refi ghting unit, water reserves and pumping station are needed for housing the required equipment.
The system consists of a S235JR EN10025-90+A1-93 steel tank, of different capacities, and a pumping station complete with the equipment required by the standards in force, in addition to a ARGO 1E – 2E – 1EM – 1M – 2M series fi refi ghting unit conforming to EN 12845 standards and the relative optional devices. The advantage of this application lies in the complete supply which involves only the realization of the excavation or the platform for positioning the NAUTILUS system and the connections water and electricity mains.
The tank sealing is certifi ed at 1.5 bar.
The NAUTILUS tank fi refi ghting system provides two installation possibilities: on the surface, therefore without the need for excavation, and an underground one, where only excavation is necessary, without any masonry.
Depending on the models, the systems may be with negative suction head or positive suction head.
