acceso, spento.
nzione all’ascolto.
sonore, figure indecidibili,
a volte persino tratti p
aesaggistici.
cceso/spento".
Varie ragioni balzano all'occhio seguendo i fe
no acustico, portandosi dietro
scolto: no images! U
o, risolto in questi u
ltimi anni soprattu
tto sui to
ni del tragico
o su quelli del grotte
sco.
Infine, da parte nostra
, vorremmo porre
stival. Dopo aver in
unico contesto, ancor meno in Ita
lia.
Occupandosi Netmage di 'm
oving images di ric
erca' ma, in
fondo, soprattutto
di multip
ercettività, la
formula dell'e
dizione 04
e media scanditi in tempi:
-Primo tempo: il
live media floor, e
sito della ricerca effettu
ata tramite il b
ando internazionale (quest’anno sono stati circa duecento i p
rogetti arriv
ati), necessario
e media, nella Sala Borsa;
-Secondo tempo: la meridiana, fr
utto di una selezione effettu
ata da osservazioni dirette dall'e
quipe del festival, n
ecessaria per fornire un "p
anorama"
aperto a 360 gradi, s
empre nella Sala Borsa;
etmage 04.
Buoni ascolti, buone visioni, b
uone esplorazioni
on, off.
Darker in the ro
oms .. Perhaps a greater concentra
tion on listening.
It might seem stra
nge that a festival, dedicated to electro
nic images, decides to even put fo
rward a T.V. set/monitor w
ith its screen turned off.
How do you perceive visions that are created in the form of sound spaces, in
describable forms, at tim
es even landscapes.
Observing the short but consolidated and by now internationally recognised tra
dition of vj’in
g and of live media, th
is year we have chosen to give an account of a
further d
imension of live media, showing the mechanism of th
e live event in
both its faces, “o
n” and “o
ff”.
Various reasons stand out following the phenomena and the emergence of c
ontemporaneousness.
A series of authors have moved progressively from the visual to
the acoustic terrain, bringing with them an approach that le
ts us still make out a spatial and
concrete attitude, w
hich often shows itself in
a radicalism of listening: in
other words, no im
ages! A radicalism that perhaps is not necessary for those who have
always dealt with sounds (m
usic), but im
portant as the curators’ proposal fo
r the public of N
etmage and their expectations.
This drift in disciplinary sliding in the research of some authors is accompanied by its
opposite cycle – from sound to the visible – practised by many. A
little lik
e
breaking audio/visible unity, that overloading of th
e perceptive senses, defined in these last years above all by tra
gic and grotesque tones.
Finally, on our p
art, we would lik
e to propose the conditions for a furth
er evolution of the festival. A
fter having starte
d out on production,
above that of pure hospitality,
Netmage is heading towards even still greater g
rowth in its dialogue with the invited authors,
in some cases being called back even from the distance of m
any years.
This continuity and deepening has pushed us to a greater articulation of th
e possibilities of liv
e media: it has given ris
e to the need to give reference, to constru
ct
possible stories (of genre, of paths, of creative and receptive modalities), to
propose experiences not as exotic, but rather a
s having rarely been presented
together in a one unique context, s
till less so in Ita
ly.
As Netmage is about 'moving im
ages of research’ but, a
t heart, above all
of multi-
perceptibility, th
e formula for editio
n 04 could not be more varied and distinct.
The programme is unorthodox and non lin
ear in its
sites, time, convergence of stile
.
The alternating of “on/off”
contains a series of proposals for live media whose perfo
rmance components explore the relationship with the space of execution,
without the need to force on anybody the typical te
rms of post-m
odernity (synesthesic, virtual, in
teractive…etc., etc.).
The festival programme is made up of a series of live media, punctuated rh
ythmically in time:
-First part: the liv
e media floor, th
e outcome of research carrie
d out through an international competitio
n (this year about 200 programmes have arriv
ed),
necessary to attempt to
gather and present unpublished ideas in area of live media, in
the Sala Borsa;
-Second part: the meridiana, th
e result of a selection carrie
d out by directly observing the festival team, necessary to furnish a “p
anorama”
open to a 360 degree view, again in the Sala Borsa;
-Third part: special events, at th
e Cassero and at Raum, th
at complement the programme of th
e Meridiana with live
perform
ances whose lack of homogeneity contributes without doubt in
raising the level of uncerta
inty or, alternatively,
the clarity of th
e design under the management of N
etmage 04.
Good listening, good viewing, good exploration.

Il progetto
[The User] è nel 1998. L’architetto
riferim
ento sulle nuove tecnologie. L’utilizzo del ru
more di fondo, come materia prim
a della loro ricerca, è il
frutto
sottoprodotti d
ell’esistenza. [T
he User] passa al setaccio l’u
niverso dei rumori d
el banale quotidiano per
trarne grani di signific
ato.
[The User] realizza opere audio-video complesse, che esplorano le relazioni fr
a umanità e tecnologie
attraverso le fig
ure dell’obsolescenza e di re
sistenza al progresso.
Fra i progetti p
iù recenti è ‘Silophone’, u
na complessa operazione tra architettu

usica e nuove
tecnologie realizzata a partire da uno stra
ordinario reperto di archeologia industria
le di Montre

trasform

composizione di [The User] i

[The User] impongono ai ru

The project [The User] h
as been set in 1988. The architect Thomas McIntosh and the composer E
mmanuel
Madan, have decided to maintain a 15 year time gap fro
m the present, in order to
offer the smallest possible
reference to new technology. The use of background noise, as the raw material of th
eir research, is
the result
of a study on the banal aspects of the human conditio
n and on its being artic
ulated into under-products of
existence . [The User] h
as been given the task of passing the universe through a sieve of banal, everyday
noises in order to extra
ct the grains of tr
uth from them.
[The User] produces complex audio-video works, w
hich explore the relationship between humanity and
technology through the figure of obsolescence and resistance to progress.
One of their m
ore recent projects is ‘Silophone’. This is a complex work lying between architecture, art,
music
and new technology. It w
as produced starting fro
m an extraordinary piece of in
dustrial archeology in
Montreal, S
ilo no. 5, which had been tra
nsformed into an exceptional in
strument, if
not other than for it
s
dimensions and could be played on, live, fr
om remote locations (by using the telephone and the web).
Out of this project, w
hich covers a crucial icon of C
anadian industrial history,
has come ‘abandon’, a [The
User] compositio
n in collaboration
with the artist S
téphane Claude and released on CD by Asphodel.
’Simphonie pour imprim
ants matricielles’ is
the perform
ance they are presenting at Netmage

g point from a piece of archeological offic
e equipment, the needle printer. F
or
this event it has been tra
nsformed into musical in
struments for an astonishing perfo
rmance.
[The User] imposes a new order to
the noises produced by the printer,
according to a musical structure.
The two artis
ts’ live perfo
rmance is being made, using a net of 12 computers, directed in turn by a
further P
C, acting as the orchestra conductor. F
rom this comes a rhythmical score of
analogical sound, which comes close to the most successful experim
ents of concrete
and minimal techno.
The perform
ance was released on CD by Staalplat and Asphodel in 2002.
The live perfo

time nationally at N

workshop
Netmage 2004 is centring its
afternoon workshop programme on a series of productive examples, which we
think will be of great in
terest to the Ita
lian public . They are the V2 Org. and fro
m the festival, Director’s cut
and Soundtoy.
These case studies are very different fr
om each other. The fir
st, is about th
e more than 10 year experience of
the Rotterdam based organization, V2, in
developing initiatives lin
ked to electronic research at th
e
international level. T
he second example is about the creation of a multim
edia project, Director’s cut, w
hich is
a DVD born from the minds of R
echenzentrum. The third example, Soundtoy, i
s about a productive platform
and experimental in
teractive game, born in London’s Studio Tonne and presented together with the
experiences of the French label Bip_HOp.
These examples allow us to observe different paths of re
search and are premised on origins and applicative
outcomes. In any case they are centre
d on different m
odalities, but each im
plying interdisciplinary exchange,
i.e. the close interaction between the worlds of visual and sound production, and have proven themselves as
concrete examples of distributive ‘m
ultimedia product’ d
evelopment.
V2 (NL)
sala borsa workshop
‘Institute for th
e Unstable Media’, is the name used by this Dutch organisation, born in the fir
st half of th
e
80’s, in an epoch when to be interested in the aesthetics of te
chnology was something very much reserved for
only a handful of people.
Their name is perhaps one of th
e most fitting definitio
ns that might be found in this terra
in. It is a conception
of instability
that defines its own fie
ld, starting not fr
om an object but from the configuration of a phase,
which is able to decide whether or n
ot a technology, which by its
elf is nothing, w
ould be able to be hybridised
through anthropological or social use and in what time scales, w
ays and contexts; and then to leave them
behind ...
V2 is therefore a research institute, w
here the organization of events supports the publishing work, th
e
organisation of workshops and meetings and the theoretical fo
rmulation. This is something which would be
rather diffic
ult to fin
d here, in our te
rritory.
V2 had represented for years the preferred means of
communication across the ocean (Atlantic) fo
r a great number of re
search studies, between Europe and the
Americas, though not all w
ere necessarily hi-te
ch. This is something very Dutch, where the absence of any
large scale production imperative and the presence of a decidedly anomalous institu
tional system, has
allowed the existence of an extremely open approach to geography and levels of cultural appreciation.
The presence of V2 at Netmage 2004 alludes to future development potential. C
ertainly tuning in on
some studies relative to the setting up of perceptive and reactive environments, th
at would
have sense being investigated in the short term
, years away from the tri
umph of thought
trial, a
ll is stated in advance but w
ith scarce results.

Esempi molto diversi tr

terzo

In ogni caso incentrate su diffe

che implicano lo scambio interdisciplinare, la

‘Institute for th

ottotito
decisamente a pochi.

workshop e convegni, all’e

produttivo massific

zionale decisamente anomalo, consentono l’esistenza

ays.
For Netmage Otolab have developed a videomoog with three independent and synchronized consoles, in
continuity with the "quarte
tto.swf" p
roject presented at the last editio
n of Netmage.
This was an audio-visual multi-
score and integrated interaction between the audio and the video events.
The videomoog has been planned and constructed working prevalently in subtra
ction
with respect to the infinite possibiliti
es of its configuration.
Each console generates a visual and sound layer that can be used with independent m
odalities
or mixed with what is
being generated by the other consoles.
Each console also has a monitor and an independent acoustic sound source.
The total mix is then projected onto a fourth
monitor or screen and the audio is spread between
the three sound sources.
The importa
nt aspect of this project is
the audio/video integration in real time.
The interaction between the people using the installation, the human and experiential game component, t
he
construction and the choice of th
e analogical gives a more manual vision
of a manageable and directly applicable technology.
The audio-visual flow remains uninterru
pted from the opening moments
of the installation to its
closure.
The users, alternating at the contro
l consoles, put themselves into the flo
w and modify
it continually,
allowing the public to be a player in a real and tru
e
audio-visual jam session.

l’interfa

La possibilità che elementi v

partitura automaticamente eseguita dal computer, la
facilità e l’a

i lavori, d
ltimi anni, in
scrivendosi in quella sottile
frontiera che separa lo
strumento (il
software) dall’a
tto del suo utiliz
zo (il suonare) come momenti o
rmai fa

di un unico indistinguibile.
La sua attualizazione in form

pensando che originariamente il terre

Has been developed by Studio Tonne and distributed by the French label BiP_Hop. Soundtoy is a softw
are package that allows the use of
a visual interfa
ce to arrange sound elements in a way which comes very close to composing music.
Studio Tonne invited some musicians (Hakan Lidbo, Scanner, S
i-Cut-D
B..) to use their s
oftware and the Soundtoy collection CD is the
result of th
is series of experiments. The CD represents one of th
e best examples in recent years of interactive soundgames, m
ultimedia
projects for personal platfo
rms.
It certa
inly makes up part of a conspicuous, th
ough not extensive series of experiments in constru
cting hybrids which stand between the
game interface (th
e videogame), the softw
are, and the multimedia work.
The possibility that th
e visual elements will corre
spond to sounds and that their p
lacement in space will a
llow the computer to
automatically arrange a musical score, has in effect a certa
in charm that consists in the definitio
n of a musical process that is
compositional, p
articipative, open and constantly changing, given the ease and absolute intuitiv
eness of the ‘c
ompositional’ p
rocess.
Effectively it is a form
of ‘realization’, m
aybe the most understandable even for those fro
m outside the field. It
is a leading factor in sound
and visual production born out of the electro
nic and digital revolution. The idea of a process as a never ending, perennial m
utation, that
is dominated by the concept of version rather than by that of a work.
An idea which has a long 20th century development history behind it, startin
g from the great m
odernist project that w
as serialism, which
was decidedly inside of an electro-acoustic paradigm. It
has made an name for itself in
the last few years, in
scribing itself in
that thin
divide that separates the instrument (t
he software) fr
om the act of using it (the playing ) a
s moments by now making up part of an
indistinguishable whole.
It’s appearance in the form
of a game is a theme that criss- crosses Netmage 2004’s programme in various ways. It
shouldn’t make us
turn up our noses to think that originally the terra
in of games was the very same for many religious and cultural practices. There are
traces of th
is in many languages (to play), th

In this work the themes of jealousy and betra

re-assemblage of the lover’s im
age, have been developed in an extreme context, i.
e. old age and the blissful, physical decline of th
e two
main characters. The study for the ageing of th

iconic and at the

both the premise and the counterpart of th

following a trail o

and at the very end of th

For Fanny & Alexander th

Mylicon/EN is a duo experimenting with alternative form

Visually, the renewed use of analogical sources and the peculiarity

Think of all sound material as mouldable, in
a three dimensional space which includes among its variables the
material elements constituting the lis
tening space, i.e.: th
e walls, sound system, and the public. A real plus,
with respect to virtu
al three dimensionality
as defined by a strict in

This is the type of approach used by Richard Chartier, a
model for a certa
in type of research where the sound
is created, starting fro
m components which are in some ways concrete, though in extre
me mediation with the
equipment used.
A sound treated with a sculptured integrity
, as if it w

specificity of th

soaked by the physicality of th

focus the concentration and
bring the mind to bear on very precise aspects of th

This composition is to be preform

asyntotic process of composition – that develops over th

Starting fro
m the 90’s, when Chartie
r’s research path would start from an aesthetic of th
e audible, on the near
silent character of sound obtained in its
pure state of energy. This is a physical phenomenon, often put in
pieces at very low volumes, in head phones rather th

Tietchens is Köner’s mentor, and is considered one of th

Active since the 1960’s, he has specialised in sound recording and is obsessed by the idea of pushing forward the
