CourseContent• PRACTICAL PART – 100 hours taught by a mother-tongueEnglish instructor.The students will attend 100-hour classes of GeneralEnglish (the schedule is available on the website). Theobjective will be to reach the B2 level of the CommonEuropean Framework of Reference for Languages for allabilities: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Asyllabus will be available online.

• THEORETICAL PART – 20 hours taught by the professor.The students will attend the lectures which focus onFunctional Linguistics and, in particular, FunctionalGrammar.

Methodology

• The PRACTICAL PART includes practical lessonstaught by a mother-tongue English instructor,from October to May with no interruption. InJanuary and February students will attendthese classes once or twice a week to keeppracticing. Mid-term assessments will beorganised.

• The THEORETICAL PART includes lessonstaught by the professor and seminars. Mid-term assessments will be organised.

Assessment

The final exam will include both a WRITTENEXAM and an ORAL EXAM, aiming at assessing,alternatively, the students’ acquisition of theEnglish Language at the B2 level of theCommon European Framework of Reference forLanguages, and Functional Linguistics.

Thewrittenexam• The written exam, divided into 3 parts, will evaluate the linguistic

competences foreseen in the B2 level of the Common EuropeanFramework of Reference for Languages. It will include: a ListeningComprehension test and a Multiple Choice test, both in the lab, and aReading Comprehension test, in one of the rooms.

• The aim of the written exam is to assess the students’ skills tounderstand the language spoken by native speakers from the UK, theUSA and Australia, but also by non-native speakers, who speak Englishas a Lingua Franca. Issues and content will be both of general andspecialised English, with a special reference to the internationaluniversity world. Grammar and lexis will be evaluated as well. The thirdpart of the written test will assess the students’ skills in understandingdifferent text types and topics, sentence transformation and word-formation.

• The students will be allowed to skip the written test if they holdrecently obtained international certifications (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge,etc.). Minimum level: B2. Also a Language Centre certification.

Theoralexam• The oral exam will require the students to discussin English the issues on Functional Linguisticsdealt with during the 20-hour lectures.

• The students will have to prepare the analysis ofa text of any type, showing that they haveacquired the right terminology and concepts, andthat they can apply them to practical cases.

• For those students who will regularly attend thelectures, the final mark will be made up of mid-term assessments as well, and of the practicalwork carried out in class, which will be evaluated.

• Attending lectures and classes is not compulsory but ishighly recommended. Moreover, only those studentswho will regularly attend the lectures, will be entitledto take the mid-term assessments. Lectures and classeswill take place both in rooms and labs. Lab classes willbe an integral part of the course, both in terms ofattendance and preparation.
