Currently the Hogh Tech sector represents, in Campania,

an important opportunity to develop and qualify the

landscape, both in terms of acquisition of competen-

cies and also professional growth. The Campania (pro-

ductive) fabric represents a large number of companies

active in this sector (5.081 only in Province of Naples),

growth trends higher than national average.Aerospace could be considered a real asset for the

Campania High Tech, with the presence of almost 130

companies and an industrial components strongly sup-

ported by Universities. This Number make of Campania

Region the fourth in Italy (after Piedmont, Lombardy and

Prices vary enormously butexpect to pay high-season rates at Easter, in summer (fromJune to September) and over the ChristmasNew Yearperiod. As a rough guide reckon on forking out anywherebetween 80 and 300 for a double room in a three-star ho-tel. Unless otherwise stated, prices quot ed are high seasonrates. Dorm rates are typically between 15 and25, often with breakfast included. Many places also offerdinner for around 10. Campers are not well catered for inthe region although there are a couple of decent sites atSorrento. Expect to pay from 5 to 12 per person and 5to 12 to pitch a tent. Agriturismi (farm stays) are becomingincreasingly popular. WALKING TouRS:If you know one thing about Naples, its probably that youdont want to drive here. Ever. Italians will warn you not totake a car into Naples; Neapolitans will tell you (with just

a hint of swagger) that you only need to get used to theroad conditions. But unless youre staying for about 18 yearsyou dont have time to get used to anything. The solution issimple walk.Even walking is not without its hazards. Scooters shoot past, brushing you as they go, parked cars block the pavements, and no car will ever stop at a pedestrian crossing unlessphysically forced to do so. We wish to establish a connection between the city and the Congress, between the Universe andople, between emotions and technology. Naples is the centre of the Mediterranean, it is a city opeworld, it is the point of contact with the other, it is a warm welcome, it is tradition and the futusolid connection between Space and the city, between the earth and the sky, between the sea adestination of human exploration and the planets of the Universe as the new frontier of exploratio

Every day we shall be explorers of emotions, delving into art, scientic research, music, food, narrwondrous story of space mission and human explorations, in the constant and inexorable progressce and technology.

In the perfect balance of tradition and innovation that Naples can provide, ideals of curiosity andtion blur into one single emotion. For ve days we will all become explorers and astronauts. Astronamong us: Space has come to visit, in Naples.

The inspiration that has inspired the exhibiting plan was toobtain light architectural forms made of pneumatic structu-

res, air forms which need a very low pressurization inside.

The most representative examples inspiring our conceptare: the utopian design of New York Buckminster Fuller geo-desic dome and the Job Colombo inated structures. Bothof them are early 70 projects and may be dened as gre -at light pavilion.

Though these structures are made with PVC material, theyhave less environmental impact than the other kind of ma-terials in use in congress exhibiting; Two are the main rea-sons: rstly only one kind of material is used and it will be ea-

sier to dispose of it, secondly it will be easier to recycle it.

Those architectures allow to obtain articial settings, as arti-cial as structures built by men in the space are.

Thus, our approach results in a strong impact inside the cityof Naples urban panorama by means of a light elementthat would not affect the territory nor leave a trace, afterbeing deated.

Mostra dOltremare has international value because it is a

complete urban development project which has not reallychanged since it was built. By enclosing it in walls the buil-ders ensured that the urban integrity of the complex survi-ved almost intact to the present day.The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, acting throu-gh the competent Superintendence, has issued laws andregulations to protect the whole area because of its highurban and historic value. The subject of the rst exhibition was the celebration of theItalian empires glory in northern Africa and the Mediter-

ranean. At the time, this was a common subject amongcountries with colonies and was used to make the popula-tion aware of the cultural, economic and military importan-ce of their countrys colonies and to justify them.

After two years of frenetic preparations and intense work, the site was ofcially inaugurated on 9th May 1940 by KingVittorio Emanuele III. Only a month later Italy entered WorldWar II and the exhibition closed.

There were three aims behind the creation of sucbitious permanent exhibition site in Naples:- to create a highly celebrative site for Italy a

    vernment;

    - to help the economic development of southeconveying the worlds attention to the area, economic activities (and especially tourism);

    - to encourage Naples to expand towards the Cgrei, a particularly beautiful valley between the hlipo, the Camaldoli Hill and the Gulf of Pozzuoli.

The enterprise required considerable planning aring of enormous resources. To guarantee the e

success two new roads and a new railway weretunnels through the hill of Posillipo, thus linking FuoNaples. The cableway between Mostra dOltrePosillipo was built at the same time. The new urban plan of 1937 used some of the down in the 1927 plan, particularly the developmples according to an East-West axis pointing tosea.

The entire Mostra dOltremare/Fuorigrotta project is an im-

portant example of XX century urban planning in Italy; forNaples it was one of the most signicant urban events inmore than a thousand years of history.

One of Mostra dOltremares merits is the modern designof its plan and architecture, instead of the more commondesign used for other world exhibitions of the time; a combi-nation of Art-Deco and picturesque landscape planning(London 1924 -1925; Paris 1925, 1931 and 1937; Chicago1933; New York 1939; San Francisco 1939).

Mostra dOltremares coherent and easily recognizable

spatial planning relies on an orthogonal system in which thespecicity of the main building is clearly visible.

The spatial idea underlying the urban plan was based onsurrounding some of the isolated monumental buildings(Tower of Nations, Mediterranean Theatre, Arena Flegrea,Esedra Fountain, and Ofce Building) with the exhibition pa-vilions, whose structure was not so signicant.

The architectural link between individual buildingrefully studied yet some of them show an unsolvebetween monumentality and usability, technica

and symbolic representation. There are some eclectic but spectacular open aas the monumental entrance and the Esedraother areas are more intimate and impressive, supavilions of the geographic sector (Libya, Italian EAegean Islands, Albania).

Mostra dOltremare was opened as the Triennial Exhibitionof Italian Overseas Lands, on 9th May, 1940. It had beenplanned by the government as a Universal Theme Exhibi-tion, like the Universal Exhibition of Rome Park (later knownas EUR). At the time the facilities were 36 exhibition pavilionsset in green areas, rich in herbs imported from the coloniesItaly had at the time; each pavilion recreated one of theoverseas colonies, in every aspect (habitat, ora, architec-ture).1950 t 1997 uNuSEd ASSETSMostra dOltremare was severely damaged by the WorldWar Two bombing and was rebuilt at the beginning of the

Fifties. The older, damaged buildings were replaced by newones (with a more rational design) which today co-exist inpleasant harmony with the original, surviving buildings. Fromthe Sixties onwards only part of the park was used as anexhibition area. General neglect of the green areas andof some buildings plus the damages caused by using theland for the living quarters of the people made homeless bythe 1980 earthquake, contributed to Mostra dOltremaresgeneral decline. Many buildings and vast areas were notused any more.
