My decision to run for theseat of Drysdale in the2012 Northern Territoryelection was largelybased on wanting to helpPalmerston restore itssense of community. As part of enjoying acomfortable and vibrantsociety, people need to feelsafe and secure, whetherat home, work, or out andabout in our community.

The Country LiberalsGovernment is determinedto reduce crime througha number of measures. Iam delighted to report thatover the last 12 months, some important laws havebeen passed that helpaddress the need for a safercommunity.

The Country Liberals havehad numerous Bills relatedto law and order passthrough parliament. Below,I have provided a snapshotof some the major laws tocome into effect.

Criminal Code Amendment(Assaults on Workers) Bill2012This Bill makes it an explicitoffence for assaulting aworker whilst he or she is

Law and Orderworking in the performanceof their duties. Whetheryou are a nurse, teacher, orshopkeeper, it is importantthat people can go to workand know that there is a

specic law deterring peoplefrom assaulting them.

Serious Sex Offenders Bill2013After a serious sex offenderserves their original sentence, they may still pose a seriousdanger to the community. ThisBill allows for the continued

detention or supervisedrelease of such people, ifcontinued management bydetention or supervision ofthe offender is warranted afterthey have served their originalsentence.

    Alcohol MandatoryTreatment Bill 2013

This Bill provides for themandatory assessment, treatment and managementof persons who are misusing

alcohol. For a decade,Labor pretended thatalcohol was not an issuein our community and theylet the problem get outof hand. This Bill meansproblem drinkers nally havea chance to change thecourse of their life.

Alcohol Protection OrdersBill 2013This is another law designedto reduce crime and anti-social behaviour associated

with alcohol misuse.Essentially, this Bill allowspolice to issue a personwith an Alcohol ProtectionOrder (APO) if they havecommitted an offencethat carries a term ofimprisonment of more than6 months. If someone hasbeen issued an APO, theycannot consume or possessalcohol, and they must notenter licensed premises.

    The NT Government

continues to plan for thegrowth of Palmerston, with the pouring ofthe concrete slab forPalmerstons $5 millionChild and Family Centre(CFC).Minister for Education PeterChandler said Palmerstonwas chosen as the urbanlocation because it is theTerritorys fastest growingregion with many youngfamilies in need of improvedservices.

Norbuilt Pty Ltd have beencontracted to deliver theproject and it is on scheduleto be completed in June thisyear, which is an excitingprospect for Palmerstonfamilies.

Big progress for PalmerstonChild and Family Centre

With sales in the suburbof Johnston two yearsahead of schedule and thenal stages of Zuccoli tobe released this year, thedemand for services is onlygoing to grow.

The centre will have anindigenous focus and boostcapacity across the region.

Family-orientated serviceswill be offered, including50 childcare places, maternal and child health, child health checks andvaccinations.

There has been widespreadconsultation with thecommunity which hasidentied a number of keythemes relating to well-being, empowerment and

    independence for families

which I believe this centrecan deliver.

Consultation also identieda need for creating solidfamily foundations includingmeeting basic needs rst, developing life skills such asgood nutrition and providinga place for family play

opportunities.50 extra childcare placeswill be welcomed by thecommunity as securing childcare places is somethingmany families battle with.

A public tender to manageand operate the centrewill be put out prior to thecompletion of construction;all interested parties areencouraged to apply.
