Per rispondere alle loro specifiche esigenze, i capi Devold® furono da subito concepiti per resistere alla pioggia, al cattivo tempo e per essere impiegati in ogni momento di vita e lavoro a contatto con la natura.

Ole Andreas Devold, il fondatore dell’azienda, era un esperto tessitore, specializzato nella manifattura di capi in lana, erede di una tradizione familiare nata nel 1760 e trasmessa con passione nel corso degli anni attraverso generazioni di artigiani. Fin dal principio egli capì che qualità ed innovazione sarebbero stati i fattori chiave per il successo dei suoi prodotti. Since 1853, Devold® has taken its inspiration for functionality from nature in Norway and from the demands made by the elements .

Our first customers were fishermen and other workers whose work took place in the harsh climate along the Norwegian coast. In order to meet their demands, the garments had to withstand rain and bad weather, and they had to be suitable for all kinds of work and activity.

Our founder, Ole Andreas Devold, was an expert in textile manufactu-ring, where wool was the raw material. His family had worked with the manufacture of clothing since the 1760s. All of the accumulated knowledge has been passed down to generations of professional crafts-men since that time.

Ole Andreas was a visionary and a knowledgeable man. He realized ear-ly on that quality and innovation were important if the business were to succeed.

Today we are proud that Devold® has kept the company heritage alive for more than 160 years. We are still manufacturing woollen clothing of the best quality, and our headquarters are still in Langevåg, where we have been based since 1868.

The clothing is designed and developed in Norway, and manufactured in our own factory in Lithuania, Europe. We spin our own yarn, do all the knitting, dyeing and sewing. That the factory is located so close to Norway makes it easier for us to check each step in the manufacturing process and gives us more flexibility in relation to product delivery.

La qualità è molto importante per Devold®. Ciò che rende unico un prodotto Devold® è il fatto che l’azienda possiede e controlla tutte le fasi del processo di produzione. Dal punto di vista dei controlli Devold® ha uno dei regimi più severi del settore; controllo infatti la materia prima al momento dell’acquisto, prima e dopo la filatura, nel processo di maglieria e tessitura, durante e dopo la tintura e la cucitura.

Per la tintura dei capi Devold® utilizza coloranti reattivi biodegradabili e privi di metalli pesanti. Il controllo qualità è quindi uno di dei punti di forza per Devold®, dall’acquisto della lana fino al prodotto finito sullo scaffale del scaffale negozio. Ogni segnalazione da parte dell’utilizzatore è molto importante per l’azienda, perché consente di lavorare sul costante miglioramento qualitativo dei prodotti e del servizio al cliente.

Quality control is very important for Devold®. What makes Devold® unique is the fact that we own and control all steps in the manufac-turing process. Checks are conducted when wool tops are purchased, before and after spinning, during knitting of the fabric and after dyeing and stitching. Devold also has its own dye works, where we have used only reactive dyes for many years. Reactive dyes are biodegradable and contain no heavy metals. Samples are also taken before the products are added to the inventory. Devold® has one of the most stringent con-trol regimes in the industry.

It is important for Devold® that each garment is of high quality. We are proud of our quality control during the manufacturing process: from purchasing the wool and all the way until the clothing is on the shelf in the store. We appreciate feedback if one of our products does not meet expectations. This can help us prevent similar defects in the future. We want the consumer to enjoy clothing from Devold® for a long time.

La pratica di allevamento che va sotto il nome di Mulesing è applicata allo scopo di eliminare il problema di alcuni parassiti dal mantello della pecora, ma rappresenta per l’animale una forte sofferenza.

La lana è la fibra preferita da molti utilizzatori perché non consente al sudore di intaccare le fibre e per le eccezionali propri-età termiche.

UNDER WEARThe inner layer ought to be thin and tight-fitting. It must quickly wick sweat away from the skin and out to the middle layer, so that the wearer stays dry, warm and comfortable. Wool is the absolute best option for most people, since it has good moisture wicking properties and retains heat even if it gets wet.

STRATO INTERMEDIOQuesto strato ha due funzioni: mantenere il calore trasmettendo all’esterno il sudore ed il calore in eccesso. Lo strato intermedio può essere meno aderente rispetto al primo strato proprio per consentire che si formi una sorta di intercapedine per la circolazione dell’aria fra il primo strato e lo strato esterno. La scelta del numero di strati da utilizzare in rapporto alla temperatura esterna di decide proprio in base al tipo di secondo strato che si intende utilizzare. Un maggior numero di strati sottili lavorano meglio di un singolo capo spesso.

MIDDLE LAYERThis layer has two functions: to keep you warm and to transport moisture and excess heat away from the body. The middle layer ought to be more loose-fitting and bulky than underwear, since it is very important that this layer forms a gap between underwear and the outerwear. A loose-fitting middle layer also provides better moisture-wicking (and warmth) through air circulation. It is the middle layer, where you select the number of layers according to the temperature outside. Several thin layers can work better than one thick layer.

STRATO ESTERNOPer strato esterno spesso si intende il guscio protettivo. Questo strato deve proteggere dal vento e dale intemperie, consentendo allo stesso tempo l’evaporazione dell’umidità prodotta dal nostro corpo. Sug-geriamo quindi di scegliere capi impermeabili con un buon livello di traspirazione, spesso dato dall’impiego di membrane che lasciano uscire l’umidità ma che non la fanno entrare !

OUTERWEARThe outerwear layer is often referred to as the shell clothing. This layer must keep weather and wind out, while wicking away moisture. Choose breathable materials that are water-repellent and have sufficient venti-lation possibilities. Good outerwear has a membrane that lets moisture out but not in.

USATE IL GIUSTO DETERSIVO PER LAVATRICEMolti detersivi per lavatrice contengono enzimi che possono danneg-giare la lana. Si raccomanda quindi di utilizzare dei detersivi liquidi a ph neutro studiati specificamente per il lavaggio di capi in lana o seta. Evitate sempre di utilizzare candeggina sui capi in lana poiché causa un danneggiamento delle fibre e toglie al prodotto le sue peculiari funzionalità.

USE CORRECT LAUNDRY DETERGENTRegular laundry detergents contain enzymes that can damage the natural wool fibres. It is therefore recommended to use a liquid laundry detergent that is specially designed for washing woollen or silk products (e.g. Milo) is recommended. These laundry detergents do not contain enzymes and have a pH-neutral composition that has been specially developed to care for wool.

The woollen garments can withstand washing a few times with regular laundry detergent, but the wool fibres will be damaged if exposed to enzymes over a longer period of time.

Avoid using bleach on wool. This will damage the fibres, and the wool will lose its properties.

LA LANA TIENE LONTANO LO SPORCOLa lana ha una naturale capacità di resistere allo sporco e di auto-pulizia. Ciò consente di utilizzare un capo in lana numerose volte prima di doverlo lavare, semplicemente interrompendone l’uso per alcuni giorni durante i quali la fibra riprende le sue naturali proprietà ed elimina i residui organici prodotti dal contatto con il nostro corpo. L’esposizione dei capi all’aria è un altro ottimo sistema per consentire il riutilizzo senza bisogno del lavaggio.

Molti credono che un lavaggio della lana a bassa temperatura non sia sufficientemente igienico; questo non è vero in quanto le carat-teristiche specifiche della fibra di lana non consentono allo sporco di insinuarsi nella sua struttura, come avviene invece per il cotone.

WOOL IS DIRT REPELLENTSince wool is naturally dirt repellent and self-cleaning, a woollen garment can be used several times before it must be washed, but it is recommended that woollen garments rest a day between each use. This gives the wool fibres time to restore their natural strength and resilience. Proper airing of wool can be just as effective for rem-oving dirt as washing the garment.

Many believe that woollen clothing does not get properly clean during a wool washing programme, but wool gets cleaner at 30° C than cotton does at 40° C. Due to the scale structure on the outside of wool, dirt is not pulled into the fibre as it is on cotton fibre.

SMACCHIATURAEventuali macchie di unto sulla lana devono essere rimosse possibil-mente prima che si asciughino, allo scopo di prevenirne l’assorbimento da parte dela fibra.

Si consiglia quindi di pulire la macchia con un panno asciutto per assorbirne la maggior quantità prima di risciacquare con acqua tiepida, lasciando scorrere l’acqua attraverso l’indumento nel punto in cui si trova la macchia.

Per le macchie più ostinate si consiglia di strofinare leggermente con sapone molle o con un detergente liquido.

Nel caso in cui la macchia sia di sangue, risciaquare solo con acqua fredda per evitare il coagulo e quindi la permanenza della macchia.

STAIN REMOVALIf you are unfortunate enough to spill something on your woollen clothing, it is important to rinse it off before it dries, as you will prevent the stain from setting into the fibres.

Wipe the stain with a dry cloth to absorb as much of the spill as possible before you rinse well with warm water. Let the water run through the garment where dirt is located.

On stubborn stains it is recommended that you gently rub in soft soap or Nylonvask cleaning agent.

If you are unfortunate enough to get blood stains on woollen clothing, it is important NOT to rinse with warm or lukewarm water. Rinse with water as cold as possible to prevent the blood from coagulating and staining permanently.

LA LANA PUO’ ESSERE BOLLITAE’ molto commune l’idea che la lana si restringa alle alte temperature e che quindi non possa essere bollita. Ciò non è vero. Il motivo per il quale la lana infeltrisce o si restringe dipende da questioni meccani-che legate allo stiramento delle fibre.

Nel caso in cui sia quindi necessario disinfettare la lana, è sufficiente lasciare a bagno il capo steso e fermo in acqua pulita per almeno 10 minuti evitando di strizzarlo.

WOOL CAN BE BOILEDThere is a widespread idea that wool shrinks at high temperatures, and therefore cannot be boiled. This is not true. In order for wool to shrink/felt, it must be subjected to movement in one form or another. As long as the woollen garment lies still, the temperature will not have any impact.

If there is a need to disinfect wool, simmer for 10 minutes on a plate in clean water. Make sure the garment lies COMPLETELY still. In other words, no stirring.

CONSIGLI PER MANTENERE BELLI I CAPI IN LANASe volete avere capi extra soffici potete utilizzare ammorbi-denti per tessuti, eccetto che per i capi della collezione Devold Expedition.

In questo caso andreste a danneggiare la struttura del tessuto che permette a questi capi la trasmissione dell’umidità, riducen-dono il cosidetto “effetto acquedotto”.

I capi in lana non dovrebbero mai essere asciugati alla luce solare diretta, poicè questa può provocare l’ingiallimento della fibra bianca o lo sbiadimento dei colori.

Per togliere le pieghe consigliamo di sottoporre il capo ad un bagno di vapore, oppure di stirare a bassa temperatura inumidendo il tessuto.

Per il lavaggio in lavatrice utilizzare il programma lana o in alternativa il programma per capi delicati, possibilmente evitando di lavare un carico di indumenti superiore ai 2 kg.

E’ preferibile infine lavare i capi in lana dopo averli lasciati riposare all’aria aperta, per consentire alla fibra di rigenerare le proprie caratteristiche originarie di flessibilità ed elasticità.

TIPS FOR KEEPING WOOLLEN CLOTHING NICEIf you want extra soft wool, you can use fabric softener, except on the quality Devold® Expedition. If you use fabric softener on Expedition, the channels which wick the moisture away from the body will become clogged and you will lose ”the aqueduct effect”.

Woollen garments should never be dried in direct sunlight, since there is a risk that the sun yellows or fades the fabric.

If you want to straighten out wrinkles in your garment, it is recommen-ded that you hang it in a steam-filled bathroom. If you prefer to iron, the garment must be damp and you must use settings for wool on your iron.

If the washing machine does not have a wool programme, wash wool on the delicate programme. When washing wool, fill the machine slightly less than for other loads, max. 2 kg.

Never soak wool. This will weaken the fibres.

Do not wash woollen clothing before airing out or stain removal has been attempted. Let woollen clothing have the opportunity to rest and recover by letting the garment rest a day before it is used again. Air out woollen clothing in fresh and preferably damp air when it rests so as to restore the resilience and elasticity of the wool.
