.Architecture for Benetton.Not the successful manufacturer or

the creator of Fabrica, but the enlightened patron of architec-

ture who has commissioned works from Afra and Tobia Scar-

pa, Tadao Ando and many other designers. Luciano Benetton

- or rather Benetton and architecture - is the subject of a

weighty tome, Architettura per Benetton (with translations in-

to French, Spanish, German and Japanese; published by Ski-

ra). With graphic design by Massimo Vignel/i, photos by Anto-

nia Mulas, and texts by Dejan Sudijc (the introduction) and

Marco Mulazzani, the book tells a story that began in 1964

with the first factory for knitted goods at Ponzano (Treviso),

twenty-four years later converted into the group's head office.

It continues with projects for the restoration and reuse of his-

torically important buildings (from Villa Minel/i at Ponzano to

Villa Loredan at Venegazzù, the Palazzi Bomben and Man-

druzzato, the Benetton Foundation's headquarters at Treviso,

and the Hotel Monaco in Venice), the construction of factories

and sales points, and the arrivai of Tadao Ando in Italy for the

first time to design the container for the innovative centre for

research into communications.

architettura. Dopo i due importanti concorsi vinti a Roma - uno

per la chiesa Dives in Misericordia inaugurata l'anno scorso (ve-

l'Ara Pacis, il cui cantiere procede alacremente seppur tra con-

tinue accese polemiche -, l'architetto americano è salito al nord

dove è stato coinvolto in due interventi importanti. Sarà lui a rea-

lizzare vicino a Bergamo - all'interno del Parco Scientifico e Tec-

nologico progettato da Jean Nouvel e chiamato "Kilometro Ros-

so" per l'immagine che se ne avrà percorrendo l'autostrada - la

nuova sede Italcementi. AI momento il progetto non è stato an-

cora reso pubblico ma si sa che sfrutterà un nuovo cemento ca-

pace di diminuire l'inquinamento, ulteriore sviluppo del "Bian-

co TX Millennium" che "azienda ha messo a punto per la chie-

sa romana. Sorgerà invece a Jesolo (Venezia), sull'area delle ex

colonie infantili, il nuovo complesso residenziale turistico voluto

dai giovani Reichegger con la loro impresa edile Hobag, per ri-

portare il noto centro di villeggiatura allo splendore degli anni

Settanta. Un progetto dove il segno di Meier è ben riconoscibile

nella scarna geometria, nell'impianto quasi razionalista, nel gio-

co tra pieni e vuoti, nel bianco delle finiture. I primi apparta-

menti dovrebbero essere pronti entro l'anno prossimo.

26 Apri/) at the A+D Museum in West Hol/ywood on Richard

Meier's recent American projects - construction now under way

includes the new federal courthouse in San Diego, San José

civic centre, UGLA's Eli Broad Art Genter, a new restaurant in

Beverly HiIIs for the chef Wolfgang Puck - Italy is enamoured

with his architecture. Atter winning two important competitions

in Rome - one for the church of Dives in Misericordia opened

last year (see Abitare, July-August 2001) and the other for the

conversion of the Ara Pacis, where work is going ahead briskly

despite the slanging match surrounding the scheme - the

American architect moved to the north, where he is involved in

two important projects. Near Bergamo he is to design the new

Italcementi building in the Science and Technology Park de-

signed by Jean Nouvel and cal/ed the "Kilometro Rosso" be-

cause of the image travel/ers will get from the motorway. Todate

the project has not been made public but it is known that will

use a new cement capable of cutting pol/ution, a further devel-

opment out of "Bianco TX Millennium ", which the company de-

vised for the church in Rome. Then in Jesolo (Venice), on the

site of a former seaside camp for children, Meier will build a

new residential complex for holiday-makers commissioned by

the young Reicheggers with their building firm Hobag, who
