The group
Cooper Industries
Founded as a small foundry in 1833 at Mount Vernon in Ohio, USA, by the brothers Charles and Elias Cooper, Cooper Industries is
now a worldwide manufacturer with leadership positions in the electrical market. In the first 125 years of its history, the company was
concentrated in the production of gas compression and distribution devices, as well as diesel engines for boats. In 1960 Cooper started a
products portfolio diversification process with a series of takeovers and a slight international expansion.
Today the product lines include equipment for the oil industry, products for electric power distribution, emergency lighting, fire and
intrusion systems.
The presence of Cooper in Europe must be attributed to a series of takeovers of high level brands such as CEAG, Menvier, and
MTL. With a vast network of companies, Cooper Industries holds today a strong leadership in innovation, development, production,
distribution and technical support in the whole world.

FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS DEFINITIONSThe scope of a fire detection system is that of revealing fires as quickly as possible and to provide signalling and indications so that suitable actions can be undertaken. The function of a fire alarm system is that of providing visual and/or acoustic signalling to the occupants of the building who might be subject to the risk of fire. The functions of fire detection and alarming can be grouped into a single system. The EN 54-1 standard specifies the requirements, testing methods and performance criteria of the components of fire detection and signalling systems in buildings.A glossary is reported below relating to fire detection and signalling systems (see also the outline of a fire protection system).
Control or signalling central unit.Component of a fire detection and alarm system through which other components can be supplied, performing the following functions:• supervision:itsupervisesthecorrectoperationofthesystemandsignalspossiblefailuresthroughopticalandacousticdevices(short
circuit, line cut-off, power supply system failure)• detectionmanagement:itreceivessignalsfromtheconnecteddetectors, determinesifsuchsignalscorrespondtoafirealarmsituation,
locate the danger area, and possibly logs all or part of such information• signallingandactionmanagement:itactivatesthesoundandvisualfirealarmdevices,sendsthealarmtothefire-fightingservice,
activates the automatic extinguishing systems and the sectioning procedure (electromagnetic door-release units).Fire detector: Component of a fire detection system that contains at least one sensor that constantly or regularly monitors at least one physical and/or chemical phenomenon associated to the fire and that delivers at least one corresponding signal to the control and signalling central unit. The decision to trigger the fire alarm or to activate the automatic fire protection equipment can be taken at the detector or central unit level. The detectors can differ according to the monitored phenomenon (heat, flame, smoke, gas), the way they respond to the variation of the monitored parameter (static, differential, speedometer), the configuration (single-point, multi-point, linear), the resetting mode, the type of transmitted signal (two-stage, multiple state, analogue).Fire alarm device: Component of a fire alarm system used to deliver a fire alarm (e.g. sounder, beacon, optical-acoustical panel).Manual signalling point (manual call point). Component of a fire detection system used to activate a manual alarm.Power supply unit. Component of a fire detection and alarm system that supplies power to the control and signalling central unit and to the components connected to the central unit.Automatic fire-fighting system: Fire-fighting and fire protection equipment (e.g. fixed extinguishing system).Section/Department: Section of a building delimited by construction elements with a predetermined fire resistance and designed to meet the requirements of fire prevention.Point: Component connected to the detection circuit to transmit and receive information about fire detection (fire detectors, manual signalling points).Area: Geographical division of monitored rooms or environments, where one or more points are installed and for which a dedicated area signal method is used for all points. The areas must be delimited in such a way that it is possible to locate, quickly and with no uncertainty, the fire origin. Each area must be provided with at least two manual signalling points.

Connection elements: All elements that make up the connections between the different components of the detection and alarm system. The cables must be suitably screened if connected to equipment sensitive to electromagnetic interference. The minimum section of voltage supply wires in detectors, manual points etc. must be at least 0.5 mm2.Interconnections must be carried out (according to CEI 64-8 prescriptions):
•withwiresinpipingundermortarorfloor;or•withwiresinexposedpiping;or•withexposedwires.Thewiresmustbeprovidedwithsheathingandlaidsoastoavoidaccidentaldamage.
Connections and shunting must be made inside specific boxes. Interconnection lines must run inside environments monitored by fire detection system. Flying lines are not allowed. In direct current lines (normally used in very low voltage), the wires must be dimensioned adequately to minimize voltage drop. Knowing the current and the lead resistance, voltage drop can be calculated with the Ohm principle:
V = R • Iwhere R is total wire resistance. The table indicates the specific resistance of the most used wires.

FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEMS:CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPONENTSELECTROMAGNETIC DOOR RELEASE UNITSWhen a fire starts the progression of damage to material and immaterial goods is exponential. Therefore, areas affected by the event are restrained through the activation of physical barriers, such as fire-resistant doors that divide the building into separate sections. In normal conditions, such doors are kept open by an electromagnet and allow to control the passage of people and/or means of transport/vehicles.In case of alarm, the release systems are activated to close them (the area required for the door to close must be kept clear). The electromagnet or door-release units an integral part of a system called “retaining system” for flame-resistant, smoke-resistant doors and other closures. A retaining system consists of at least one fire signaller, e.g. smoke detector, a release unit or signal processing central unit, a retaining device (electromagnet) and an energy source. In case of emergency, the electromagnet releases the door that closes automatically thanks to a closing system (hydraulic door check, spring or counterweight systems), thus preventing the propagation of fire and smoke.Electromagnets are available with retaining strength from a few tens to several hundred kilos, according to the door structure, as well as in different shapes and configurations, for different installation and mounting solutions.Description. The electromagnet normally consists of a coil inside a ferromagnetic core. When the coil is crossed by current, the electromagnet generates a special magnetic field. Approaching a specific iron counter-plate, this is powerfully retained against the core. The attraction power of the system normally depends on the physical dimensions and the magnetic characteristics of the core material, and the current that flows through the coil.Ejector for residual magnetism. It is a counter-plate detaching system generally made up of a central pin with calibrated spring that, with no voltage, allows the door release by eliminating the residual magnetism that would keep the core and counter-plate together.Permanent electromagnetic brake. It exploits the magnetism of a permanent magnet to keep the counter-plate against the core, with no current consumption. In this case, to separate the parts, it is enough to supply voltage to the coil inside the core for a few moments, in such a way that the generated magnetic field has the same intensity as the pre-existing field but opposite polarity, so that the previous field is cancelled.Selection of the electromagnetic brake. To choose the model and the retaining strength of the electromagnet, you must consider the installation site, whether industrial, residential etc. In industrial environments, for instance, the installation of an electromagnet with a higher strength than calculated might prevent undesired release due to impact or vibration owing to the transit of heavy vehicles or fork-lift trucks. The following factors must be considered: door type and weight, closing system type and power, useful installation area, number of electromagnets, total consumption, available energy source and its autonomy, possible use of the release button on the electromagnet or a remote button. Each device must also allow manual operation, without affecting the functionality of the release device.Door status. To comply with accident prevention standards or specific directives, some magnets are provided with “door status”, which in combination with a magnetic contact on the frame, allow the central unit to identify the position of the door.

Technical info
The door status is a contact that changes status when the counter-plate is released from the electromagnet (they are mainly used in France).Diodes. Some door-release units are provided with diodes for disturbance suppression and protection against power supply reversal, while some others are not equipped with such devices so that the installer can apply the most suitable devices according to the specifications of the power supply line.Release button: It is a button on the electromagnetic release unit that, cutting of power supply to the internal coil, allows to release the counter-plate and close the door.Remote manual release button. It is a release button located away from the electromagnet and installed near fire-resistant doors (it must not be covered by the door).Installation advice: It is important to identify the application point for the electromagnet and the corresponding counter-plate. Normally, the electromagnet is mounted on the wall, while the counter-plate must be located in the top area of the door wing.A key factor is the distance between the door-release unit and the door hinges: the shorter the distance, the lower the strength required to close the door manually. The electromagnetic units with release button must be installed in such a way that the button can be easily identified and accessed. Special attention must be paid that the electromagnet core and the counter-plate are installed in axis. The mounting supports for the electromagnet and counter-plate must be provided with screws or anchors adequately sized to withstand traction at least twice as strong as the electromagnet’s nominal retaining strength. The keeper plate must be mounted with the “TOP” label upwards to avoid torsion that might damage it in the long run. Check the correct inclination of the plate, so that its surface is parallel to the core, then tighten the screw of the counter-plate joint. When the release unit is installed, the core and counter-plate must engage with a slight pressure on the door wing. The presence of even minor impurities between the electromagnet core and the counter-plate, or small dents due to accidental impact may prevent perfect union, causing a remarkable proportional reduction of nominal retaining strength. The surface must not be painted and, for optimal efficiency, must be cleaned periodically with a soft cloth (do not use water).
Manual Call pointsRed manual Call points are employed for the manual signalling of a fire alarm (manual fire alarm points).Descriptions. broken simply with fingers, a glass breaking hammer.Colours: Manual call points are available in different colours besides red for other applications (provided with adhesive labels to identify their function) such as: door release in access control systems, extinction control, emergency stops, generic danger warning and other purposes.Operation: The Call points can work with direct operation (breaking the glass or pressing the fake glass will trigger the alarm) or indirect operation (it is necessary to break the glass and press the internal button). The finger must apply pressure onto the sensitive front element, which is normally a glass of suitable thickness protected by an anti-injury film, or a “fake glass” of plastic material. In some buttons, the glass must be broken with a specific hammer.A broken glass and/or the apparent colour alteration of the fake glass background indicate the button where the signal was started. According to the model, the button can be restored by means of a suitable tool or by replacing the broken glass.

Technical info
FIRE ALARM DEVICESThe sound pressure of an alarm device is expressed in dB(A), as explained hereunder.Sound pressure level and decibel (dB) Sound pressure level (SPL) is the degree of variation of atmospheric pressure in a point due to sound. SPL is generally indicated at 1 m from the source. As the sound pressure range measured in practice has 6 orders of magnitude, a logarithmic scale in decibel (dB) is applied to preserve a certain level of measurement accuracy. The formula for SPL is:SPL (dB) = 20 log10 (P/P0), where P is measured pressure and P0 is the reference pressure that represents the hearing threshold:20μPa (1 Pa = 1 N/m2 ). The range of sound pressure levels in practice goes from 0 to 140 dB (see table next). We remind that dB calculations are based on the addition of sound pressure, not SPL. Double sound pressure corresponds to +6 dB, while multiplication of the sound pressure by 10 equals +20 dB. For a single-point sound source (remote field), the spherical attenuation of sound pressure according to distance can be derived from the equation:Sd = S0 – 20 log10 (d/d0), where d = distance from the source, d0 = distance from the source at which the SPL is known, Sd = SPL at d distance, S0 SPL at d0 distance. So, if distance doubles, sound pressure decreases by 6 dB (20 log102 = 6). Sound pressure levels are expressed, in practice, in dB(A) to take into account the response curve of human ear to different frequencies and sound pressures.Letter A indicates the weighted curve used to filter the sound pressure measurement.

Sounders. y emit a dual-tone or alternate signal or frequency Sweep. Normally, medium-low frequencies are use (1 kHz approx.) for fire applications, and medium-high (3 kHz approx.) for security applications. Sound pressure must be at least 65 dB in one direction and not more than 120 dB in all directions. The most popular sounders are electronic models with two different technologies:• piezoelectric:theyexploittheproperty of piezoelectric crystals, that deform elastically if subject to an electric field. The electric field is
obtained by applying voltage to a “waffle” made up of two metal electrodes with an intermediate piezoelectric material layer (normally ceramics). If the electric field is alternate, the piezoelectric waffle starts vibrating, generating an acoustic signal. The piezoelectric waffle must be coupled to the air impedance with a suitable diffuser. Very low consumption but very small range of reproducible frequencies.
•electromagnetic:theyconsistofaloudspeakerwithpermanentmagnet;anelectroniccircuitfeedsamovingcoilwithafrequencyinthe kilohertz range, which sets the diaphragm into vibration and consequently generates the emission of an acoustic signal. Current consumption is rather high, but a wide range of reproducible frequencies is available. Recently, voice message sounders have been introduced, which help reduce panic as, besides emitting an alarm tone, they can also play a recorded voice that informs people in the building about the actions to be taken. Some sounders are provided with beacon to provide also a visual alarm.
BELLS. In the past, they were the only acoustic alarm device, now they are still used as, thanks to the high content of low-frequency harmonics in the signal, they can be heard at a distance also with physical barriers.OPTICAL ACOUSTICAL PANELS. Developed as options for fire detection systems, they are now commonly used as, besides issuing an acoustic signal, visually communicate with a message, reducing the disorientation of people in the room. In terms of information, the available writings, besides indicating the event under way, provide indicative information on the behaviour to be complied to, such as “DO NOT ENTER” or “EVACUATE ROOM”.The silk-screen printing process of the COOPER CSA panels, makes the writing almost invisible with turned-off panel, but very clear with turned-on panel.Different light sources are available: incandescence (fixed or intermittent light), Xeno (only intermittent light), fluorescent (only fixed light). Acoustical signalling is performed by means of piezoelectric buzzers with high sound pressure.Recently, self-supplied panels have also been introduced, which thanks to their battery, do not absorb current from the central unit, only requiring a simple activation command. The panels are generally installed at entrances and along escape routes from the monitored areas, in the higher part of the environments for easier identification.BEACONS. They emit a light signal in alarm conditions. The most popular are provided with Xeno lamp to generate very intense light flashes with minimum current consumption.OPTICAL and ACOUSTIC REPEATERS. They allow the remote transmission of the optical and/or acoustic signalling of alarms in the locations where the signals emitted by the main alarm devices are not perceptible. They have LED-based light sources and acoustical signalling by means of piezoelectric buzzer.
