Nel panorama delle relazioni ebraico-cristiane degli ultimi tempi, si registrano ancora echi e riflessioni sulla revisione della preghiera cattolica del Venerdì Santo, secondo il rito straordinario del 1962.

Il Comitato Centrale dei Cattolici Tedeschi, che fu tra i primi a formulare un documento scritto di reazione al Motu Proprio "Summorum Pontificum" dello scorso 2007, dal titolo "The Disruption to Christian-Jewish Rela-tions by the Re-establishment of the Tridentine Rite" ("la frattura nelle relazioni ebraico-cristiane provocata dal ripristino del Rito Tridentino") mettendone in luce i rischi per il dialogo, nel febbraio del 2008, è nuova-mente tornato sulla questione. A circa venti giorni dalla pubblicazione della revisione della preghiera, nel documento intitolato "A New Burden on Christian-Jewish Relations" ("Un nuovo fardello sulle relazioni ebraico-cristiane’), il Comitato pone in parallelo le due versioni della preghiera, quella del 1970 e quella, rivista, del 1962, evidenziando come nella prima "la chiesa riconosce che gli ebrei fedeli all’alleanza con Dio e che vivono nell’amore del Suo nome, sono sul cammino della salvezza" e "chiede che, lungo tale cammino, Dio conduca Israele alla pienezza". Viceversa, la riformulazione operata da Papa Benedetto, suona piuttosto come l’ arrangiamento amichevole di una fraseologia che continua a parlare di necessità di ‘illuminazione’ e quindi a sottendere l’incompiutezza e l’oscurità in cui cammina il popolo ebraico.

le ripercussioni negative che tale revisione ha avuto sulle relazioni ebraico-cristiane fanno interrogare sulla effettiva opportunità di sostituire una formulazione equilibrata come quella del 1970 con una revi-sione tanto problematica. Per questo, il Comitato conclude auspicando che la preghiera del Messale di Paolo VI venga permessa per l’intero rito romano.

Ad aprile dell’anno corrente, il viaggio di Benedetto XVI negli Stati Uniti con il previsto incontro con la comunità ebraica locale portava con se anche l’aspettativa di un chiarimento in merito alla preghiera del Venerdì Santo. le comunità statunitensi si sono espresse nel complesso in modo meno preoccupato sulla questione (una rassegna dei documenti ebraici sull’argomento si può trovare sul sito “www.sidic.org” nella sezione dei documenti in linea - ebraici), ma conoscendo bene gli echi che la vicenda aveva avuto in Europa. Il messaggio papale alla sinagoga di Washington in occasione della Pasqua, non riferendosi mai esplicitamente alla questione, ha in qualche modo ribadito la duplicità dei piani su cui il Vaticano tratta le relazioni ebraico-cristiane: quello intra-ecclesiale (di cui le disposizioni liturgiche sono esempio) e quello ad extra, cioè il piano in cui le relazioni vengono intessute frontalmente e personalmente. Su quest’ultimo piano, infatti, la gestualità del Pontefice riprende quella del predecessore nella volontà dell’incontro e della vicinanza. Viene ribadito l’insegnamento della Nostra Aetate, e la crescita nella fiducia e nell’ami-cizia che consente di condividere spiritualmente i doni della Pasqua ed a perseguire il suo richiamo alla giustizia, alla misericordia e alla solidarietà. Queste, si concretizzano nell’impegno a rispondere alle ne-cessità di chi soffre e ad operare per la pace in Medio Oriente.

la consueta rassegna bibliografica maturata nel corso di quest’anno, risultato della raccolta di documenti e dallo spoglio dei periodici, viene riportata in modo parziale in questo numero, e divisa nei tre numeri del-l’anno 2008 per conservare al Bollettino un formato agevole. Sono aggiunte anche le informazioni relative al nuovo Programma di Attività del Sidic ospitate presso l’Università gregoriana per l’anno 2008-2009.

Following its April 2007 statement on the exten-ded permission to use the Tridentine rite, the discussion group again considered the different

versions of the good Friday prayer at its meeting in February 2008 and adopted the following statement:

On February 4, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI promul-gated the good Friday prayer “For the Jews” in the extraordinary rite [Tridentine] version, which unleashed international protests from Jews and Christians. It struck that nerve, which touches a historic trauma for Jews irrespective of their reli-gious orientation: conversion to believing in Jesus Christ! Ever since the Middle Ages the prayer for the Jews on good Friday has led to harsh, humiliating and dangerous excesses against the “perfidious” and “blind” Jews. Although this vocabulary of traditional enmity towards Jews does not occur in the new intercession, old Jewish fears are evoked by the phrasing that Christians hope for the enlightening of the hearts of the Jews and their acknowledging Jesus Christ.

The new text authorized by Pope Benedict reads in English translation:

Let us also pray for the Jews. That our Lord and God may enlighten their hearts, that they may acknowledge Jesus Christ as the Savior of all men. (Let us pray. Let us kneel. Let us stand.)

Almighty, ever living God, who will that all men would be saved and come to the knowledge of the Truth, graciously grant that all Israel may be saved when the fullness of the nations enter into Your

Church. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Irritating questions are raised by this prayer. If the Tridentine rite of 1570 (last revised in the Roman Missal of 1962) spoke of blindness and darkness, and now, however, the new intercession prays for “enlightening,“ the question arises if this is not only a friendlier sounding phrasing of the same thing. If the Jews are to arrive at the realization and thus acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as the Savior of all humanity, do they have then to convert to believing in Jesus Christ—in the course of history or only at its end? Or will they see the Savior of the world, when history, which is the

time of faith, has come to an end? Is the Jews’ ac-knowledgement of Jesus Christ—when and how-ever takes place—a con-dition for their salvation? Or are there two ways of salvation: one for the peoples entering into the

church, and another for Israel without the church? Does the church go on with her hoping and pray-ing for Israel to be saved leaving it to god? Or must the church feel obliged to invite the Jews by the Evangelization—certainly without any coer-cion and without any compulsion—to believe in Jesus Christ and the gospel?

Pope Paul VI’s good Friday liturgy renewed in the sense of the council has not raised such ques-tions and fears. In the Roman Missal of 1970 the official English translation of the good Friday prayer reads:

Word of God, that they may continue to grow in the love of his name and in faithfulness to his covenant that they may reach the destination set by God’s providence. (Let us pray. Let us kneel. Let us stand.)

Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and his posterity. Listen to your church as we pray that the people you first made your own may arrive at the fullness of redemption. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.”

What makes these prayers different is obvious: On the one hand in the prayer of 1970, which is said on good Friday in the ordinary Rite of the Roman Catholic Church almost everywhere, the church expresses unequivocally her appreciation of the dignity of Israel, god’s chosen people, to whom god has given the promises and a Covenant, that was never revoked and will never be revoked (cf. Rom 9:4 and 11:29 and the Declaration of the Second Vatican Council, Nostra aetate, 4). On the other hand the church acknowledges that the Jews who are faithful to god’s covenant and live in the love of His name are on the path to salvation. She asks that god lead Israel to fulfilment along this path. The church does not speak here of a Jew-

ish confessing of Jesus Christ to be a condition for salvation, be-cause she trusts that their being faithful in god’s covenant will lead the Jews to

their salvation. This conviction was also clearly expressed in our discussion group’s statement, “Jews and Christians in germany: Responsibility in Today’s Pluralistic Society”1 from 13 April 2005: “According to Christian faith, Jesus Christ is ‘the Yes and the Amen’ (2 Cor 1:20) of god’s irrevo-cable fidelity to Israel and to the whole world. Nevertheless, there is salvation for Jewish people who do not believe in Jesus as the Christ because of god’s covenant with them.”

Comparing the two prayers it becomes over-whelmingly clear that the prayer of Pope Benedict XVI is a step backward from the prayer of Pope Paul VI and from the groundbreaking words and

gestures of Pope John Paul II. We are disappointed and dismayed that Pope Benedict did not use the formulation of the “ordinary form” of the Missal of 1970 verbatim for the “extraordinary form” of the rite. In the motu proprio of July 2007, which permits the extended use of the Tridentine rite, it states that the postconciliar rite of 1970 is the norm, while the rite of 1962, although now per-mitted for general use, is only the exception. But it is also stressed there that both forms of the rite testify authentically to the faith of the church (lex orandi – lex credendi). The authorization of two forms weighs particularly heavily on such a historically burdened topic as the good Friday prayer for the Jews. The ambiguity of having two authorized forms of praying for the Jews irritates Catholics and has greatly damaged the growing trust between Catholics and Jews.

It was also felt that unnecessary damage to this confidence and annoyance was caused by the fact that Pope Benedict, who—as far as we know—neither before the publication of the motu proprio in the previous year nor before the prom-ulgation of the new good Friday prayer, consulted with Jewish dialogue partners to discover whether the new good Friday intercession would hurt their religious feelings. Numerous letters and public statements—for instance the statement of our discussion group from April 2007—had made the explosiveness of the project unmistakably clear. What is difficult to understand is that the new good Friday prayer for the Jews was put into ef-fect without comment and the forceful reactions which could be expected were hazarded. The subsequent explanation of Cardinal Kasper, that the excitement was based on misunderstandings since the text only expresses the church’s escha-tological hope, was hardly convincing.

We hope for and ask Pope Benedict to revise his decision and permit only the good Friday rayer of 1970 for the entire Roman rite.

la visita negli Stati Uniti mi offre l’occasione per estendere un caloroso e cordiale saluto ai miei fratelli e sorelle ebrei in questo Paese e in tutto

il mondo. Un saluto che è tanto più spiritualmente intenso a motivo dell’avvicinarsi della grande festa di Pesah. “Questo giorno sarà per voi un memoriale; lo celebrerete come festa del Signore: di generazione in generazione, lo celebrerete come un rito perenne” (Esodo 12,14). Anche se la celebrazione cristiana della Pasqua differisce in vari aspetti dalla vostra celebrazio-ne di Pesah, noi la comprendiamo e sperimentiamo in continuità con la narrazione biblica delle grandi opere che il Signore ha compiuto per il suo popolo.

In occasione della vostra più solenne celebrazio-ne, mi sento a voi particolarmente vicino, proprio per ciò che “Nostra Aetate” invita i Cristiani a ricordare sempre: che cioè la Chiesa “ha ricevuto la rivelazione dell’Antico Testamento tramite quel popolo con cui Dio, nella sua ineffabile miseri-cordia si è degnato di stringere l’Antica Alleanza e che si nutre dalla radice del buon ulivo su cui sono stati innestati i rami dell’oleastro dei gentili” (n. 4). Nel rivolgermi a voi, desidero riaffermare l’insegnamento del Concilio Va-ticano II sulle relazioni cattoli-co-ebraiche e reiterare l’impegno della Chiesa per il dialogo che nei trascorsi quarant’anni ha cam-biato in modo fondamentale e migliorato i nostri rapporti.

A motivo di questa crescita nella fiducia e nell’amicizia, Cristiani ed Ebrei possono insieme sperimentare nella gioia il carattere profondamente spirituale della Pasqua, un memoriale di libertà e di redenzione. Ogni an-no, quando ascoltiamo la storia della Pasqua noi ritorniamo alla notte benedetta della liberazione. Questo tempo santo dell’anno dovrebbe essere un richiamo per entrambe le comunità a persegui-re la giustizia, la misericordia, la solidarietà verso lo straniero, la vedova e l’orfano, come comandò Mosè: “Ma ti ricorderai che sei stato schiavo in Egitto e che di là ti ha liberato il Signore tuo Dio;

perciò ti comando di fare questa cosa” (Deutero-nomio 24, 18).

Al Sèder della Pasqua voi richiamate i santi pa-triarchi Abramo, Isacco e giacobbe e le sante donne di Israele, Sara, Rebecca, Rachele e lia, l’inizio della lunga generazione di figli e figlie del-l’Alleanza. Con il passare del tempo l’Alleanza assume un valore sempre più universale, quando la promessa fatta ad Abramo prende forma: “Io ti benedirò e renderò grande il tuo nome, e divente-rai una benedizione.... In te si diranno benedette tutte le famiglie della terra” (genesi 12, 2-3). In effetti, secondo il profeta Isaia, la speranza della redenzione si estende all’intera umanità: “Verran-no molti popoli e diranno: ‘venite, saliamo sul monte del Signore, al tempio del Dio di giacobbe, perché ci indichi le sue vie e possiamo camminare per i suoi sentieri’” (Isaia 2, 3). In questo orizzonte escatologico viene offerta una reale prospettiva di fraternità universale sul cammino della giustizia e della pace, per preparare la via del Signore (cfr Isaia 62, 10).

Cristiani ed Ebrei condividono questa speranza; infatti, noi siamo, effettivamente, come affermano i profeti, “prigionie-ri della speranza” (Zaccaria 9, 12). Questo vincolo permette a noi Cristiani di celebrare al vostro fianco, anche se in un modo nostro specifico, la Pasqua della morte e della

risurrezione di Cristo, che noi consideriamo in-separabile dal vostro, avendo gesù stesso detto: “la salvezza viene dai giudei” (giovanni 4, 22). la nostra Pasqua e il vostro Pesah, sebbene distinti e differenti, ci uniscono nella comune speranza centrata su Dio e sulla Sua misericordia. Questo ci sprona a cooperare gli uni con gli altri e con tutti gli uomini e le donne di buona volontà per rendere migliore questo mondo per tutti, in attesa del compimento delle promesse di Dio.

LA NOSTRA PASQUA E IL VOSTRO PESAh, SEBBENE DISTINTI E DIFFERENTI, CI UNISCONO NELLA COMUNE SPERANZA CENTRATA SU DIO E SULLA SUA MISERICORIDA

Con rispetto e amicizia, chiedo, pertanto, alla Comunità ebraica di accettare i miei auguri di Pesah in uno spirito di apertura alle reali possibilità di cooperazione che vediamo da-vanti a noi, mentre contempliamo le urgenti necessità del nostro mondo e guardiamo con compassione alle sofferenze di milioni di no-stri fratelli e sorelle ovunque. Naturalmente, la nostra condivisa speranza per la pace nel mondo abbraccia il Medio Oriente e la Terra Santa in particolare. Possa la memoria delle misericordie di Dio, che Ebrei e Cristiani cele-brano in questo tempo di festa, ispirare tutti i responsabili per il futuro di quella Regione - dove gli eventi legati alla rivelazione di Dio avvennero realmente - a rinnovati sforzi e

specialmente a nuovi atteggiamenti e ad una nuova purificazione dei cuori!

Nel mio cuore, ripeto con voi il salmo dell’Hallel pasquale, invocando abbondanti benedizioni di-vine su di voi:

“Celebrate il Signore perché è buono;perché eterna è la sua misericordia Dica Israele ‘eterna è la sua misericordia’... lo dica chi teme Dio ‘eterna è la sua misericordia’”(Salmo 118, 1-4).

A Bad Arolsen, una cittadina a nord di Francoforte, sono stati aperti al pubblico gli archivi dell’International Tracing Service and historical research (ITS). gli archivi riguardano tutti i prigionieri, tedeschi e non, che furono internati nei campi di concentramento e di lavoro. l’archivio centrale custodisce 50 milioni di schede relative a oltre 17,5

milioni di civili perseguitati dai nazisti.

Una spessa cartella contiene i dettagli relativi a venti giorni di uccisione sistematica di prigionieri del campo di Majdanek. l’International Tracing Service (ITS) è l’archivio nazista più grande del mondo, con più di 33 milioni di pagine di schede, conservate in sei edifici. Per oltre 60 anni l’archivio era accessibile solo ai sopravvissuti e ai fami-liari, organizzazioni sull’Olocausto, studiosi e giornalisti, ma dalla scorsa settimana anche la grecia, uno dei paesi facenti parte del Consiglio dell’archivio, ha dato il suo assenso all’apertura al pubblico. Il Vicariato di lingua ebraica in Israele è parte del Patriarcato latino di gerusalemme. la comunità è composta da cattolici di lingua ebraica che vivono in Israele, provenienti sia dall’Ebraismo che dalle Nazioni

Oggi, le comunità cattoliche di lingua ebraica sono presenti a gerusalemme, Tel-Aviv-Jaffa, Haifa e Beer Sheva. Il Vicariato include due comunità di fedeli di lingua russa. Nel 2003 mons. Jean-Baptiste gourion osb fu ordinato vescovo per la comunità cattolica di lingua ebraica come Ausiliario del Patriarca Michel Sabbah ma dopo la sua morte prematura avvenuta nel 2005 è stato sostituito come vicario dal Custode di Terra Santa, padre Pierbattista Pizzaballa ofm.Il Vicariato è presente in sei località di Israele e cerca di allargare tale presenza costruendo e sostenendo chie-se e centri comunitari. Pubblica libri liturgici e materiale cristiano in lingua ebraica, svolge attività educative e caritative.
