DESCRIZIONE - Il Macchi C.202 «Folgore» porta i caccia italiani al livello dei caccia migliori dell’epoca. Di linea bellissima, estremamente armonioso in ogni suo elemento, mantiene l’ottimo controllo di volo e la superlativa manovrabilità del suo predecessore C.200 «Saetta». Con il motore Daimler Benz DB 601 A- 1 il prototipo esegue il primo volo il 10 Agosto 1940. Già nel settembre 1940 se ne allestiscono le catene dimontaggio e i primi esemplari vengono consegnati nel maggio 1941. Dotato di filtro antisabbia il caccia fu impiegato in Africa Settentrionalefin dal novembre 1941,imponendosi sui caccia avversari Hawker «Hurricane» e Curtiss «P.40», seguendo l’alternarsi delle vicende belliche fino aN’arrivo delle truppe alleate in Italia. Un altrofronte che vide l’impiego de! velivolo fu quello russo, con attività molto intensa, anche se breve, a causa della grave situazione, dovuta al periodo invernale. Dopo l’armistizio il«202» fu impiegato al Sud nella Aeronautica Cobelligerante e al Nord nella Aviazionedella R.S.I. Terminato il conflitto fu utilizzato dalla Aeronautica Militare Italiananell’ambito della Scuola Caccia. La validità della impostazione originaria del progetto è dimostrata dalle poche variazioni che il «202» ha subito nel periodo di produzione.Oltrealla modifica con filtri antisabbia furono introdotti attacchi sub-alari per serbatoisupplementari o bombe.Fù sperimentato anche un radiatore posto sotto il motore e successivamente furono introdotti due cannoni Mauser da 20 mm„ in gondole sub-alari.L'armamento normale consisteva in due mitragliatrici da 12,7 mm. in fusoliera e due da 7,7 poste nelle ali.Caratteristiche tecniche - Caccia monoplano ad ala bassa con struttura interamentemetallica. Superfici di comando a struttura metallica, rivestite di tela. Carrello retrattile a scomparsa totale, ruotino di coda fisso. Posto di pilotaggio con capottina ribaltabilelateralmente. It had a beautiful and appealing design throughout and it conserved the superlative handling qualities of its predecessor: the Macchi C. 200 «Saetta». Powered by a Daimler Benz DB 601 A-1 engine, the prototype took to the air for the first time on the 10th August 1940. By September of the same year production started and the first example was delivered in May of 1941. Fitted with a sand filter it was used in North Africa, from November 1941, opposing such fighters as the Hawker Hurricane and Curtiss P. 40 till the Allied landings in Italy. It was also extensively used on the Russian front, although for a short period due to the gruelling situation brought about by the winter. After the Armistice, the «202» was used in the South by the Co-belligerant Air Force and in the North by the RSI. After hostilities ended it was used in the trainer role by the Italian AirForce.The very few changes required by the C. 202 during its career confirm the good sense and sound design of the original project. Apart from the modification to the sand filter, some were fitted with attachments for bombs or external fuel tanks. An experimental version was fitted with a chin radiator and a subsequent version was fitted with a pair of Mauser 20 mm cannons in underwing gondolas. D’une belle ligne, extrêmement harmonieux dans touts ses éléments, maintenants le très bon controle de vol et la superlative manoeuvrabilité de son prédécesseur, le C 200 «Saetta». Muni d’un moteur Daimler Benz DB601 A-1, le prototype effectua son premier vol le 10 Août 1940. La chaîne de montage fut préparée dès septembre 1940 et le premier exemplaire fut livré en mai 1941. Doté d’unfiltre anti sable, le chasseurfutemployé en Afrique Septentrionaleà la fin denovembre 1941, s’imposant aux chasseurs adverses, Hawker Hurric.ane et Curtiss P 40, par la suite l’alternance des vicissitudes guerrières finit à l’arrivée des troupes alliées en Italie. Un autre front, qui vit l’emploi de l’appareil fut celui de Russie, avec une activité très intense, mais courte, à cause de la grave situation due à la période hivernale. Après l’armistice, le 202 fut employé au sud par l’aéronautique cobelligérente et au nord par l’aviation de la RSI. Le conflit terminé, il fut utilisé dans l’aéronautique militaire italienne dans le circuit de l’école de chasse. La validité de la mise au point originale du projet est démontrée par le peu de variations que le 202 a subit au cours de la période de production. Outre la modification du filtre à sable, celle de l’attache sous l’aile pour réservoir supplémentaire ou bombe fut introduite. Fut même expérimenté un radiateur placé sous le moteur puis successivement furent introduit deux canons Mauser ou gondoles sous les ailes. L’armement normal consistait en deux mitrailleuses de 12,7 mm de fuselage et deux de 7,7 dans les ailes. Caractéristiques - Chasseur monoplan à aile basse à structure entièrement métallique. Von elegantem Aufbau, vollkommen durch - dacht in jedem seiner Elemente, bewahrt auch dieser Typ die guten Flug - eigenschaften und die überaus große Manövrierfähigkeit des Vormusters C. 200 «Saetta» (Pfeil). Mit einem Daimler Benz DB 601 A-1 führt der Prototyp am 10 August 1940 den Erstflug durch. Schon im September 1940 wird die Serienfertigung aufgenommen und die ersten Muster erscheinen Mai 1941 bei der Truppe. Ausgestattet mit Sandfilter wurde der Typ auch ab November 1941 in Nord-Afrika eingesetzt, wo man auf die gegnerischen Jäger vom Typ Hawker «Hurricane» und Curtiss «P. 40» traf. Der “Blitz” blied bis zur Invasion derallierten in Italien im Einsatz. Eine andere Front, die den Typ im Einsatz sah, war Rußland, wo eine sehr starke, wenn auch sehr kurze Einsatztätigkeit des italienischen Korps erfolgte. Besondere Schwierigkeiten ergaben sich aus den winterlichen Verhältnissen. Nach dem Waffebstillstand dientedie MC 202 im Süden in den Reihen der «Co belligérant AF» (Badogliotruppen), im Norden in den Staffeln der R.S.I. Luftwaffe. Nach Beendigung der Kriegshandlungen wurde der Typ auch von der italienischen Luftwaffe zur Jägerschulung eingesetzt. Die phantastische Qualität des Grundentwurfes zeigt sich schon darin, daß die MC 202 während ihrer Produktion nur wenigen Veränderungen unterzogen wurde. Zu der Ausrüstung mit Sandfilter kamen noch Waffen rüstsätze unter den Tragflächen entweder für Zusatztanks oder für Bomben. Es wurde auch ein Kinnkühler für den Motor ausprobiert und später auch zwei Flügelkanonen vom Typ «Mauser» eingebaut diese in Gondeln Die Standardbewaffnung bestand aus zwei MG vom Kaliber 12,7 mm. in Rumpf und zwei MG von 7,7 mm. in den Tragflächen. Technische daten Jagdflugzeug. Tiefdecker in Ganzmetallbauweise Steuerflächen aus Metallprofilen mit Stoffbespannt. Fahrgestell einziehbar, Spornrad fest. Cockpit mit seitlich aufklapp barer Haube. Black arrows indicate parts to be cemented together, grey arrows indicate parts to be fitted into place without cementing. Ensure that cement suitable for polystyrene plastics is used.

Aermacchi MC.202EC (ex Serie XIII) Serial: MM91974, Italy, 1943EC probably meaning "Esperimento Cannoni", it was another link between Veltro and Folgore. One aircraft (Serie III, s/n MM 91974) was fitted with a pair of gondola-mounted 20 mm cannon with 200 rounds each (it flew on 12 May 1943),; later it was turned into a C.205V. Filter A.S.
