La ricerca sui materiali innovativi? A Varese è di casa e già da un pezzo ha imboc-cato con decisione la strada dell’attenzione all’ambiente e ai materiali innova-tivi, spronata anche dalla Camera di Commercio. L’ha intrapresa con grinta da

oltre mezzo secolo nel Centro Comune di Ricerca di Ispra, affrontandola poi conrespiro europeo. L’ha percorsa lungo l’Asse Ticinese del Biotech e ha proseguito met-tendo preziosi mattoni verdi con l’Insubria Biopark di Gerenzano. Il tutto senza scor-dare due progetti targati ambiente e ricerca (l’Energy Ch.It e l’Energy Management)e l’impegno delle università varesine sul fronte delle Biotecnologie.

A Ispra si Entra in EuropaAncora lo scorso ottobre il modello Ispra veniva analizzato e lodato durante unavisita dal ministro per le Politiche Europee Andrea Ronchi. Che lo definiva “unsimbolo di quanto possa essere importante operare su scala europea, avvalendosi dellaprofessionalità di tutte le eccellenze esistenti e aggregando risorse che su scala naziona-le sarebbero troppo limitate”. E il Centro Comune di Ricerca di Ispra – una realtà radicata nel Varesotto fin dal1956, poi ceduta dal Governo ad Euratom – ha tra le mani un compito importante:può giocare infatti un ruolo determinante nell’incidere sul destino climatico del pia-neta, emergenza dei nostri tempi. Grazie ai laboratori, tra i quali quello che statestando il consumo e le emissioni di autobus e camion. E non dimentichiamo semi-nari preziosi come quello sugli impianti fotovoltaici, o ancora l’efficienza energeticanegli edifici, con un occhio rivolto anche alle agevolazioni fiscali che una sana con-sapevolezza ambientale può trasmettere. Ma dalle prove sui sistemi di illuminazionea quelle sugli elettrodomestici del freddo, l’elenco delle ricerche che vogliono con-tribuire a fermare il cambiamento climatico, è lungo.

What about our Province’sresearches concerning innovativematerials? For quite a long timeand with the support of the localChamber of Commerce Varesehas been paying attention toenvironment and innovativematerials. For more than fiftyyears Varese has been carryingout this research in collaborationwith the Joint Research Centreof Ispra (which gives it anEuropean mark), but also withthe Biotech sector of TicinoCanton and with the InsubriaBiopark in Gerenzano. Besides,Varese boasts other projectsregarding environment andresearch (called Energy Ch.It andEnergy Management) and theefforts of its university as con-cerns Biotechnologies.

It has arelevant task, that is to influencethe climatic lot of the world andto face up this actual emergency.The JRC has several laboratories,among which there is a depart-ment that studies busses and lor-ries’ consumption and emission.The JRC also organizes preciousworkshops, such as meetings con-cerning photovoltaic systems orbuildings’ energetic efficiency.Besides the JRC pays great atten-tion to tax relieves which arerelated to a correct environmen-tal sensibility. Pavia, oltre che con banche e imprese: si tratta dell’Asse Ticinese del Biotech, unprotodistretto che parte appunto dal Canton Ticino estendendosi fino al capoluogolombardo. A sostenerne lo sviluppo anche la Fondazione Banca del Monte diLombardia: Varese però ha il ruolo determinante di regia in questo ambito ed è pro-prio la tecnologia a unire aziende e istituzioni. Una scommessa tanto più preziosa intempo di crisi. Come ha avuto modo di sottolineare Alberto Onetti, direttore delCresit (Research Centre for Innovation and Life Sciences Managementdell’Insubria): “Il punto di forza delle biotecnologie e delle scienze per la vita è un insiemedi settori sviluppati e che offre particolari prospettive di sviluppo”.Intendiamoci, il Varesotto è già terra fertile in questo senso, tuttavia il rischio delleaziende è di rimanere isolate. Con questo Asse si riesce a metterle in rete.

Due Atenei per Vincere le Sfide del FuturoLe biotecnologie stanno bussando sempre più alla porta del mondo universitario edella ricerca, rivelandosi un alleato strategico contro la crisi. Concetti ribaditiall’Insubria dal ministro Roberto Maroni, che si è chiesto: “Varese come Cernobbio?Molto di più. Varese ha di fronte a sé grandi e importanti sfide da vincere”. Non dimenti-chiamo che anche l’Università Carlo Cattaneo di Castellanza s’è dotata di un Masterin Biotecnologie. Che già ha attirato l’interesse delle imprese, perché – ha illustratoil direttore del master, il professor Giuseppe Aglialoro – le biotecnologie possono rap-presentare “…un volano per l’economia”.

Un Bioparco Volano dell’IndustriaE’ in questa direzione che ci si è incamminati anche nel Sud della Provincia diVarese, con l’Insubria Biopark. A Gerenzano la ricerca procede spedita, interessan-do anche problematiche delicate come le terapie avanzate, vale a dire i prodottimedicinali a base di cellule e il loro potenziale nel trattamento di molte malattie.Nell’istituto del Saronnese si è anche testimoni diretti dell’applicazione della ricer-

Varese is the heart of thisnetwork, in which firms and insti-tutions are united by technology.The actual crisis makes this chal-lenge become more and more pre-cious. Alberto Onetti, director ofCresit (Research Centre for NewTechnologies and Life Sciences ofInsubria University) underlines:“Biotechnologies and biological sci-ences’ potential is given by their actualdevelopment and by their prospects ofdevelopment”. The Province ofVarese already offers opportunitiesin this field, but our businesses riskto be isolated. This District repre-sents the way to involve them in aspecific network.

Two Universities aimed at win-ning future challengesBiotechnologies become more andmore important for universitiesand research centres and appear tobe a strategically to get over thecrisis. These concepts were con-firmed by Minister RobertoMaroni when he visited InsubriaUniversity. The Minister won-dered: “Is Varese like Cernobbio?Yes, it is. Even better Varese offersmore opportunities than Cernobbio,because it has to face up and wingreat and important challenges”. Alsothe Carlo Cattaneo University ofCastellanza organizes a Master inBiotechnologies, in which enter-

prises are particularly interested.Professor Giuseppe Aglialoro,Director of the Master, explainsthat biotechnologies can represent“…a driving sector for economy”..

A biopark which leads IndustryInsubria Biopark, an institutesituated in the South of theProvince of Varese, follows theabovementioned trend. InGerenzano its research is pro-ceeding quickly and involvesdelicate matters, like advancedtherapies techniques. This insti-tute studies medicaments basedon cells and their potential inthe treatment of many diseases.Besides, it directly demonstratesthe concrete results and applica-tions of its research: TheBiopark has really a photovolta-ic system, opened in January. Insix months it allowed the labora-tory a 100 thousand euro sav-ing. Moreover the systemexceeded all the initial expecta-tions, because it produces a10% more of energy in compar-ison with forecasts. Climate certainly helps this system,which is the biggest one installed inthe Province of Varese and is listedseventh in the classification of ourRegion. The system was realizedwith the support of FondazioneCariplo. Meanwhile this instituterepresents the eighth technologicand scientific park and is the cradleof the Italian companies operatingin the biotech sector.

When firms save energy, theydevelopIt is a well-established convic-tion that energy conservation

represents an investment in thedevelopment. The projectEnergy Ch-It confirms this idea.This project is organized by theChambers of Commerce ofVarese and Como, with the col-laboration of Politecnico ofMilan, of the Centro Tessile eCotoniero of Busto Arsizio andof Supsi (the SUPSI Universityof Applied Sciences and Arts ofSouthern Switzerland).This project was proposed byApi (The small and mediumenterprises Association ofVarese) last April: It provides acooperation which crosses thefrontier and involves theCanton of Ticino. Its aim is tochange the use of electricity andto promote renewable energies,starting from businesses situat-ed in our area. These enterpris-es are small and medium con-cerns and Energy Ch-It offersthem the opportunity to cooper-ate through a network. The first step will include freeenergy checks-up for every firm(140 checks-up have beenalready planned): through theanalysis of the feedbacks it willbe possible to know the powerconsumption of every singleproductive stage. An other fun-damental aspect of this projectaimed at energy saving is theclassification of all premises.The privileged ones are thesmall enterprises, but also thoseold buildings that were builtbefore 1977. The controls willallow to draw up a list of goodgeneral rules that will be offeredthe firms.

Superando le stesse aspettative iniziali, visto che produce il 10% di ener-gia in più rispetto alle previsioni. Con l’aiuto del clima, certo, ma intanto siamo difronte a un impianto che è il più grande della provincia di Varese e il settimo dellaLombardia, realizzato anche in questo caso grazie a un’alleanza, quella con laFondazione Cariplo. Intanto questa struttura si è affermata come l’ottavo parcoscientifico tecnologico e incubatore di imprese in Italia nel settore biotech.

Chi Risparmia Energia CresceChe risparmiare in energia significhi pure investire nella crescita, è credo conso-lidato nella provincia di Varese. E un’opportunità in questo senso è il progettoEnergy Ch-It, organizzato dalla Camera di Commercio varesina con quella coma-sca e con la collaborazione del Politecnico di Milano, del Centro tessile e cotonie-ro di Busto Arsizio e della Supsi, la Scuola Universitaria Professionale dellaSvizzera Italiana. Un altro progetto di cooperazione, presentato lo scorso aprile, che supera le fron-tiere e ingloba il Canton Ticino. L’obiettivo è rivedere gli impieghi energetici,come pure promuovere le energie rinnovabile a partire dalle imprese che costitui-scono l’ossatura di questa zona, quelle piccole e medie, e che possono così costi-tuire una rete. La prima tappa sarà l’analisi, attraverso check-up energetici gratuiti(ne sono stati previsti in prima battuta 140) in ciascuna azienda: in questo modosi esamineranno i processi produttivi, proprio in termine di consumo d’energia. Enon si trascureranno gli immobili, che hanno un peso fondamentale in questa par-tita di risparmio energetico. Privilegiati appunto i siti produttivi di piccole dimen-sioni, ma anche gli edifici già vecchi, costruiti prima del 1977. Dai controlli sca-turirà una lista di buone prassi che verrà offerta alle aziende.

Energy Managementuguale Impianti Efficienti

L’energia è una risorsa a tuttocampo. E quindi bisogna saperlagestire, per il bene dell’ambiente edel portafoglio. Con questo spiritoè nato ‘Energy Management’, unprogetto da 100 mila euro su cui laGiunta della Camera di Commer-cio di Varese ha spinto con con-vinzione. Il piano punta a soluzio-ni innovative a favore dell’efficien-za energetica degli impianti che sitrovano nelle aziende varesine. Lastrada è tracciata negli anni scorsi,pensiamo che dagli studi regionalidel 2007 l’industria di Varese sicollocava in una classifica suiconsumi pro-capite prima diComo con 6.221 Kwh. Nelledelicate partite aperte oggi dallacrisi economica (e da una cre-scente sensibilità ambientale),investire su questo fronte costi-tuisce una mossa ancora piùimportante. I semi si gettanoanche nella formazione. E’ chia-ro che se gestire il costo dell’e-nergia diventa un fattore strate-gico, servono figure adeguateper ben portare avanti questocompito. Così nasce l’energymanager in terra varesina, eall’interno della Laurea inIngegneria Gestionale all’uni-versità Carlo Cattaneo diCastellanza si è tracciato un per-corso di studi che formerà figu-re professionali in grado di gesti-re “in modo integrato ottimaleil fattore energia all’interno deiprocessi produttivi nelle azien-de” (per dirla con le parole delrettore Andrea Taroni). Espertidi energia a tutto campo, quindimultidisciplinari come l’impresaha bisogno. Le redini dell’inse-gnamento vanno al gruppo Erg ea Espansione Srl, la società gros-sista di energia elettrica fondatanel 2002 e partecipata, tra glialtri dall’Unione Industrali.

Energy Management meansefficient systems

Energy represents a fundamentalresource. We have to use it in anappropriate way, in order to protectenvironment and save money. Theproject “Energy Management”derives from this attitude and issupported by the Council of theChamber of Commerce of Varese,which has also allocated 100,000euro to promote it. The projectaims at finding innovative solutionsfor the firms of Varese, which canguarantee the energy efficiency oftheir systems. This idea was devel-oped in the last years. We can men-tion the researches that our Regioncarried out in 2007, which includ-ed a list concerning the per capitaconsumption of the industries. Theindustrial reality of Varese, thatshowed a 6221 Kw/h consumption,was placed first if compared withComo industrial reality. The actualeconomic crisis and the increasingenvironmental sensitiveness induceto invest in this field, which is con-sidered more and more significant.Firms invest in training too. If weconsider the reduction of energyexpenses a strategic element, weneed experts that are up to this job.That’s why in our land there is aprofessional figure called EnergyManager. As its Chancellor AndreaTaroni explains, the degree inIngegneria Gestionale of the CarloCattaneo University of Castellanzaincludes a course aimed at trainingexperts in energy management.These experts will be able to man-age energy properly in all the enter-prises’ productive stages. They alsohave a multidisciplinary education,particularly requested by the indus-trial sector. This training is pro-moted by the groups Erg andEspansione Srl. The second groupwas established in 2002, collabo-rates with subjects like the UnioneIndustriali (Entrepreneur Union)and is a wholesale trader in theenergetic field.

Nuove Tecnologie e Scienze per la Vita, E’ un progetto che ha grande rilevanza all’interno del territorio varesino. Nel 2009 la Cameradi Commercio di Varese ha aderito al Comitato promotore “Sistema produttivo delle NuoveTecnologie e Scienze per la Vita – Asse del Ticino”. La finalità è di sostenere l’aggregazione delleimprese operanti nella filiera delle nuove tecnologie per le scienze della vita, valorizzando i lega-mi tra imprese e centri di ricerca/strutture sanitarie d’eccellenza. Il CrESIT (Research Centre for Innovation and Life Sciences Managementdell’Insubria), soggetto capofila del Comitato promotore, ha raccolto l’adesione di una

There is a project which is considered particularly relevant in all our land, called“Sistema produttivo delle Nuove Tecnologie e Scienze per la Vita – Asse del Ticino”(Productive system related to the District for New Technologies and Life Sciences –Ticino Valley). In 2009 the Chamber of Commerce of Varese jointed the Committee thatpromoted this initiative. Its aim is to support the union of all the businesses interestedin the application of new technologies for Life Sciences Management and in the improve-ment of the connections among firms, research centres and the most prestigious health-care institutions. CrESIT (Research Centre for Innovation and Life SciencesManagement of Insubria University) is the head member of the Committee that proposed

Amongthem there are research centres, local authorities, professional associations and a consid-erable number of firms connected with this productive system (biotech, clean-tech, med-ical technologies and related trade). Nowadays it is possible to find more than thirtyenterprises involved in this project, which continues to receive requests of participation.The Research Centre for Innovation and Life Sciences Management continues growingand there are the bases to make it become one of the drives behind the economy of ourVarese System.
