The epitome of wellness in town is Merano’s Thermal Baths complex, which offers

fifteen pools of different sizes (including two with water containing radon), a spa

center with various treatments, a sauna complex and a spacious park in the summer.

Merano has a richly diverse event calendar. Culture, tradition and culinary delights

are central to many local events, such as the traditional Haflinger Country Horse

Races, Merano in Yoga, the Merano Spring project, the Asfaltart street art festival, the

TuesdayNight in Merano and A summer night in Merano event series, and the südtirol

music festival merano.meran, one of Europe’s most important classical music festi-

vals. Not to mention such long-standing events as the Gran Premio Merano South Ty-

rol, the Merano Grape Festival (which dates back to 1886) and the Merano WineFes-

tival, three autumn highlights preceding the magnificent Merano Christmas Market.

As for shopping, Merano’s commercial hub are the Portici Arcades with their mix of

old-established shops and international boutiques and fashion outlets. A notable ad-

dition to the local outdoor market scene is the Merano Market: held from March to

October, its vendors sell South Tyrolean products exclusively. After dawn, the options

range from big screen entertainment at the cinema to the bustling nightlife in the

local bars and nightclubs (especially on weekends).

Perla delle Alpi, Nizza del Tirolo, terrazza meridionale della monarchia asburgi-

ca: sono tanti i riconoscimenti attribuiti a Merano che ha ispirato diversi artisti e

letterati, fra i quali Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Mario Luzi, Edoardo Sanguineti,

Maria Luisa Spaziani. Alcuni loro versi sono stati incisi sulle panchine che puntellano la

“Via della Poesia” in un tratto della rigogliosa Passeggiata Gilf. Ogni due anni, inol-

tre, si celebra il Premio letterario Merano-Europa.

Proprio a Kafka è dedicata una delle dieci opere plastiche realizzate da artisti di spes-

sore internazionale che in un tratto della Passeggiata Lungo Passirio compongono il

percorso “Figure Umane”: rendono omaggio a personalità che hanno contribuito allo

sviluppo e al consolidamento dell’immagine di Merano.

Pearl of the Alps, Nice of Tyrol, Mediterranean terrace of the Habsburg Monarchy: Through-

out its history Merano earned many flattering denominations, inspiring influential

writers like Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Mario Luzi, Edoardo Sanguineti and

Maria Luisa Spaziani. Selected verses of these writers, inscribed onto benches, form

the scenic Walk of Poets on the lush Gilf Promenade. Moreover, every two years the

Merano-Europe literary award is presented.

In September 2017, Merano officially applied for the title “Italian capital of culture

2020”. The submitted dossier’s title “Italy’s small Europe” not only hinted at the pe-

culiar linguistic situation in Merano (half of its population speaks Italian, while the

other half speaks German as first language), but also at the town’s crucial economic

and cultural role.

Merano’s diversity is also evident in its architecture, as shown by its castles, churches

and stately villas. Built in the 15th century, the splendidly preserved Prince’s Castle

used to be the urban residence of choice of the princes of Tyrol. The St. Nikolaus

cathedral with its 83-meter high bell-tower is widely considered one of Tyrol’s first

gothic buildings. However, the town’s two main architectural landmarks were built in

the Art Nouveau style: the Puccini Theater and the Kurhaus, the latter being a magnifi-

cent building hosting major events. The striking Lutheran church Christuskirche, the

Synagogue (with the Jewish Museum) and the Russian-Orthodox church bear witness

to Merano’s religious openness.

Merano’s museums and art galleries are also worth a visit: Merano’s eventful history

(featuring an Egyptian mummy) is displayed at the Palais Mamming Museum, while

contemporary tendencies in art and architecture have their showcase in the Kunst Merano Arte gallery. The Women’s Museum covers “women’s” topics, while at Trautt-

mansdorff Castle the Touriseum traces the evolution of tourism in South Tyrol.

A settembre 2017 Merano ha ufficialmente presentato la sua candidatura a “Capitale

italiana della cultura 2020”. Il dossier che la sostiene reca il significativo titolo “La

piccola Europa d’Italia” illustrando non solo la compresenza di gruppi linguistici (la

popolazione è di madrelingua per metà italiana e per metà tedesca) ma anche il cen-

trale ruolo economico e culturale della città.

La sua varietà si manifesta anche nell’architettura, attraverso i castelli, le chiese, le

ville signorili. Eredità del 15° secolo e magnificamente conservato, Castello Principe-

sco fu residenza dei Principi del Tirolo. Con i suoi 83 metri d’altezza il campanile del

Duomo di San Nicolò è una delle prime espressioni del gotico in Alto Adige. Il Teatro

Puccini, del 1900, è un vero gioiello di equilibrio nell’accostamento di stili. Il Kurhaus,

palazzo simbolo di Merano, è un inno all’eleganza e al liberty dove si celebrano vari

eventi. La presenza di una chiesa evangelica, di una sinagoga (con museo ebraico) e

di una chiesa russo-ortodossa documentano l’apertura religiosa della città.

Vari musei e gallerie solleticano l’approfondimento: la dinamica storia di Merano - ne

è parte anche una mummia egizia! - rivive al Palais Mamming Museum, le avanguar-

die dell’arte e dell’architettura contemporanea sono di casa a Merano Arte, il Museo

delle Donne racconta il mondo al femminile, il Touriseum a Castel Trauttmansdorff

Merano offre tutto l'anno le condizioni ideali per passeggiare all'aperto, in città, fra

i parchi e una vegetazione alpina e mediterranea incorniciate da maestose cime. Il

rollio del fiume Passirio caratterizza il centro ed è piacevole viverne le sponde.

Le tante facce del cuore urbano si possono scoprire camminando. Dalla Passeggiata

Lungo Passirio sulla quale affaccia il Kurhaus parte il Sentiero di Sissi: intitolato alla

celebre imperatrice, conduce ai Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff. Questi rappre-

sentano una delle maggiori attrazioni dell’Alto Adige: 80 ambienti botanici da tutto il

mondo e vari spunti fra i quali il "Giardino degli innamorati".

La Passeggiata Tappeiner è un balcone sulla conca cittadina che offre panorami uni-

ci. Altri percorsi prendono il via dal centro. Attorno al quale si dipana una fitta rete

di Waalweg, i sentieri d’acqua che affiancano le antiche rogge - molte ancora in fun-

zione - per l’irrigazione dei campi. Si inoltrano lungo facili pendenze fra prati, meleti,

vigne e boschi. Più in alto i sentieri di montagna, per chi ama la natura d’alta quota.

Le vette che circondano la città sono facilmente raggiungibili. Sul lato nord si staglia

il Parco nazionale Gruppo di Tessa. Consente di farsi ammirare nella sua interezza

attraverso l’Alta Via di Merano, circuito di circa 100 km suddiviso in varie tappe.

Throughout the year, Merano offers ideal conditions for walks in its parks, their al-

pine and Mediterranean vegetation forming a striking contrast to the town’s mountain

backdrop. The rush of the Passer River is a distinctive feature of the town center, the

riverbank offering scenic waterside hangouts.

One can explore the whole town on foot. The Sissi Trail was named after the well-

known Austrian Empress, and leads from the Kurhaus and the Passer Promenade to

the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. The Gardens are one of South Tyrol’s major

tourist attractions, the complex boasting 80 garden landscapes from around the world

and intriguing areas like a Garden for Lovers.

The Tappeiner Trail, meanwhile, offers splendid views of the Merano Valley Basin. Other

footpaths also have their starting point in the town center. In addition, there is a dense

network of Waalweg trails surrounding Merano. These trails run alongside manmade wa-

ter channels used for the irrigation of the cropland. The Waalwege lead across meadows

and through orchards, vineyards and woods.

Those who prefer high-altitude hikes, should head to the easily accessible mountains

around Merano. To the north of Merano extends the Texelgruppe Nature Park. The Me-

rano High Mountain Trail, a circuit covering 100 kilometers divided into several legs or

day hikes, leads directly through the nature park.

The Merano 2000 ski and hiking area is located directly above the town and acces-

sible with the eponymous cable car in just seven minutes. It offers the right kind of rec-

reational activity for everyone. With a large area for children (open in summer) and the

Alpine Bob whizzing down into the valley for 1.1 kilometers, Merano 2000 is great fun for

the whole family.

An enjoyable and environment-friendly way to explore the Merano area is to take a bike

ride on the cycle paths leading through the town’s surroundings. The bikemobil Card

offers specific advantages for riders taking long-distance tours.

Relaxation and fun in lush settings are also key factors for golf’s popularity. There are

two golf courses near Merano: the Golfclub Passeier. Meran in the Passeiertal Valley and

the Gutshof Brandis 9-hole golf course in Lana.

A quintessentially local horse breed, the iconic Haflinger is a popular choice for rides through

the countryside around Merano. It also takes center-stage in the traditional Haflinger

Country Horse Races, held each year on Easter Monday at the Merano Racecourse, one

of Europe’s most beautiful horse racing grounds. The racing season’s undisputed highlight

is the Gran Premio Merano South Tyrol, one of Europe’s most well-known races.

Note: Even hikes on trails that are reportedly easy should be carefully planned, taking the prevailing weather conditions into account.

Direttamente sopra la città - vi si approda in 7 minuti con una funivia panoramica - si

protende l’area sciistica ed escursionistica Merano 2000. Si offre a tutti, a partire

dalle famiglie grazie a un parco tematico per bambini (durante la bella stagione) a

l’Alpin Bob che si tuffa tra gli alberi per 1,1 km.

La bicicletta (si possono anche noleggiare gratuitamente) è un altro modo, divertente

ed ecologico, per conoscere il territorio solcato da diverse piste ciclabili. La “bikemo-

bil Card” garantisce diversi vantaggi su lunghe percorrenze.

Verde, relax e divertimento sono i tratti comuni pure del golf: due i campi nei parag-

gi, da 18 buche al Golfclub Passiria.Merano in Val Passiria e da 9 buche al Gutshof

Brandis a Lana.

Fra le icone della città non si può dimenticare il cavallo. L’Haflinger, originario di que-

ste terre, grazie alla sua docilità si presta ad escursioni in sella nella natura. Le loro

corse, il Lunedì di Pasqua, rappresentano l’apertura della stagione dell’Ippodromo di

Maia, uno fra i più belli e prestigiosi d’Europa. Il suo momento clou va in scena con

il Gran Premio Merano Alto Adige, corsa a ostacoli tra le più famose del continente.

Merano è il paradiso dei buongustai. La ricchezza della tradizione sudtirolese gioca

con gli influssi mediterranei dando vita a una sorprendete varietà di interpretazioni

che riflettono il vissuto di questa città. Che si ritrova nei locali: le stube in legno che

profumano di Schlutzkrapfen (mezzelune ripiene) e Spatzln (gnocchetti verdi di spi-

naci) si alternano ad ambienti internazionali. Le pasticcerie in stile viennese ai bar di

tendenza. Tra sapori alpini e haute cuisine sono tantissime le esperienze intermedie

- e creative.

Numerose manifestazioni sono dedicate al gusto: per esempio la Festa dell’Uva

con i suoi piatti tipici e i Mercatini di Natale con la loro sorprendente gastronomia.

Ma soprattutto il Merano WineFestival che a novembre manda in scena un gioioso

tourbillon di degustazioni di vini, showcooking con celibri cuochi e delizie artigianali.

Inoltre diverse Settimane Gastronomiche coinvolgono ristoranti che più volte duran-

te l'anno dedicano parte del loro menù a un tema.

Merano is a paradise for gourmets, where South Tyrol’s rich culinary tradition and

Mediterranean flavors combine to a wide range of crossover dishes, reflecting the

town’s general set-up. As do its eateries, from rustic inns with their wood-paneled

Stuben and the lovely smell of Schlutzkrapfen (semi-circular stuffed pasta) and Spatzln (soft dough dumplings made with spinach) to restaurants with international cuisine,

from Vienna-style Konditoreien (pâtisseries) to trendy bars. There are numerous fla-

vors and creative approaches to be tried in between these alpine and Mediterranean

influences.

Many events focus on culinary delights: the Merano Grape Festival, for instance, on

traditional food, or the Merano Christmas Market on Christmas specialties with a sur-

prising twist. Not to mention the annual Merano WineFestival, which each November

comprises all sorts of wine tastings, cooking demonstrations and tasty treats. In addi-

tion, themed culinary weeks see restaurants preparing dishes to differet themes during

the year.

A custom both highly traditional and entertaining is the so-called Törggelen in au-

tumn, which combines hiking with hearty seasonal fare like must, roasted chestnuts,

meat platters and Knödel dumplings, served up in rustic wayside inns. Local products

are still widely used in South Tyrol’s cuisine, with the still-important local agriculture

yielding high-quality foodstuffs like apples, milk, cheese, jam, Speck ham, rye bread

and aromatic herbs. Not to mention grapes: its mild climate and soil quality make

Merano a bona-fide wine-growing area. Besides native red wines like the light-bod-

ied Vernatsch and the full-bodied Lagrein, locally grown white wines like the Gewürz-

traminer and the Pinot Bianco have garnered much praise. A high quality level is also

guaranteed by the Winery Meran Burggräfler, which is located in the neighboring

village of Marling and has 360 members.

Usanza tipica e divertente è il “Törggelen” che d’autunno unisce il piacere delle cam-

minate fuori porta ai sapori della stagione: principalmente mosto e castagne, ma an-

che il piatto delle carni servite con i canederli in locande tipiche lungo i sentieri. In

cucina vengono usati i prodotti della casa: l’agricoltura, in Alto Adige, ha un ruolo

centrale ed esprime prodotti di alta qualità fra i quali mele, latte e formaggi, mar-

mellate, speck, pane di segale, erbe aromatiche. E naturalmente l’uva: il clima mite

e le proprietà dei terreni fanno di Merano un’area vitivinicola a grande vocazione.

Ne sono ambasciatori vini rossi autoctoni come la leggera e seducente Schiava e

l’austero Lagrein ma anche e soprattutto i bianchi all’apice di tante classifiche di gra-

dimento, dal Gewürztraminer al Pinot Bianco. Espressione di questa grande varietà e

qualità è la Cantina Merano Burggräfler che nel limitrofo paese di Marlengo riunisce

360 soci conferitori.

I giorni si accorciano, la natura alpina imbiancata si fa magnifico scenario, gli aromi

sono quelli dell'Avvento. Relax, attività o di tutti e due un po': nessun problema, Mera-

no permette ogni tipo di scelta.

Con la funivia panoramica, il comprensorio sciistico ed escursionistico di Merano

2000 si raggiunge in 7 minuti dalla città, della quale viene considerata la “terrazza

soleggiata”. Quaranta chilometri di piste di diversa difficoltà, tracciati per freerider e

snowboarder, vari sentieri escursionistici, la discesa per le slitte: una serie di possibilità

che consente a ciascuno di trovare la montagna che cerca. Altre aree dedicate agli sport

invernali con atmosfere, panorami e opportunità differenti si possono raggiungere ve-

locemente in auto (massimo un’ora): Schwemmalm in Val d’Ultimo, San Vigilio sopra

Lana, Plan in Passiria e il ghiacciaio della Val Senales.

unique; there is a multitude of things to do and to discover at the food and handicraft

stalls as well as special guided tours of the town, workshops for children and concerts.

New Year’s Eve in Merano is an occasion to gather and see in the New Year to live music

Primavera a Merano Spring in Merano

In spring, nature awakens from its hibernation and adorns Merano with greenery and

flowers, while the surrounding orchards are covered in hues of white and pink. The mild

local climate invites visitors to take reinvigorating walks in the fresh air. The spring blos-

soms in Merano also herald a time of new discoveries.

The common need for wellbeing and inner balance is central to two spring events: while

Merano in Yoga features famed international experts in the holistic disciplines, the Süd-tirol Balance project comprises various open-air initiatives.

facce che coinvolge le località dei dintorni: Scena, Tirolo e Naturno. Rappresenta

un’esaltazione del dialogo della natura con l'ambiente urbano, il territorio e la mano

dell’uomo che le dà forma. Iniziative, sculture floreali e opere d’arte caratterizzano

vari luoghi. Proposte per rigenerarsi arricchiscono il programma.

Fra le manifestazioni spicca il Merano Flower Festival, alla sua prima edizione. Sor-

prendenti installazioni floreali e figure forgiate con le piante caratterizzano il centro

ing the villages of Schenna, Dorf Tirol and Naturns. It is a celebration of the artistic inter-

play between nature, the Merano area and human craftsmanship. Side events, topiary

and artworks adorn various locations. Leisure activities further enhance the program.

A key part of Merano Spring, the first Merano Flower Festival features eye-catching in-

stallations and topiary made of flowers in the town center, while an outdoor market’s

vendors sell flowers, ornamental plants and gardening accessories. A program of side

events rounds out the festival.

È un inventario relativo ai nuovi edifici realizzati negli ultimi sei anni, selezionato assieme a una giuria composta da tre membri, uno proveniente dal nord Italia, uno dalla Svizzera e uno dall’Austria. Vengono individuati circa 40 progetti di tutta la regione, con un’attenzione particolare rivolta ai principali compiti progettuali in Alto Adige.NEW ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTH TYROL 2012-2018Merano Arte wishes to plan the third edition of “New Architec-ture in South Tyrol” in 2018, and proposes a third list related to the new buildings made in the past six years together with a jury made of three members, one from northern Italy, one from Swit-zerland, and one from Austria. In this case, about 40 plans will have to be detected in the entire region, with particular atten-tion addressed to the main planning duties in South Tyrol.

I prezzi elencati non comprendono supplementi (p.e. per camera singo-la o breve soggiorno).

Il prezzo valido a tutti gli effetti sarà quello concordato telefonicamente o per iscritto con l’albergatore. In caso di partenza anticipata (rispetto a quanto concordato) viene solitamente fatturato il costo di tre giornate di soggiorno. A seconda dei casi, può essere fatturato anche tutto il periodo prenotato.
