Iniziamo dal tuo più importante successo, la vittoria agliopen di Francia 2010. Che regalo ti sei concessa perfesteggiare?

Il regalo più grande è stato festeggiare con la mia famiglia ed imiei più cari amici al rientro da Parigi. I miei genitori hannoimbandito una lunga tavolata piena di cibo e vino buono, gliamici sono accorsi da tutta l’Italia. E’ stato bellissimo. A dire ilvero però, avrei voluto anche fare una bella vacanza al mare,per riposarmi e smaltire la grande emozione. Ma a noi tennistinon è concesso andare spesso in vacanza. E ho dovutorimandare.

Che scarpe usi sul terreno di gioco?In campo uso sempre la Raptor Ultra II di Lotto.

Che caratteristiche devono possedere le tue scarpe datennis per soddisfarti a pieno?

Le mie Raptor racchiudono soluzioni tecniche avanzate che mipermettono di potenziare le performance in campo. La suoladinamica di forma concava, disegnata sulle forme del miopiede, mi garantisce massima ammortizzazione, stabilità ereattività. Inoltre sono dotate del sistema ammortizzante Syn-Pulse, che mi garantiscono un ottimo cushioning e miforniscono di una eccellente stabilità torsionale neglispostamenti laterali. La trovo una scarpa confortevole,bilanciata nel peso e in perfetta simbiosi con il mio piede.

E finalmente parliamo delle scarpe che indossi fuori dalterreno di gioco… quante ne hai, più o meno?

Scarpe… tante scarpe! Di tutti i tipi: comodissime, comode,

stivali, col tacco molto alto. Ne avrò almeno una cinquantina.Il fatto è che non riesco ad usarle molto spesso. Per cuiquando le indosso me le godo proprio.

Le tue preferite?Una scarpa col tacco 12, grigia, che metterei su ogni vestitoperché anche se alta è molto comoda, e le mie scarpe LottoLegenda: comode, morbide, di vari colori e che miaccompagnano sempre.

Ti consideri una fashion victim?Non direi proprio. Amo la moda, mi piace scoprire le nuovetendenze ma amo ancor di più vestirmi ed indossare ciò chepiù mi piace.

Che scarpe metti in valigia, quando parti per parteciparead un torneo?

Ovviamente non possono mancare le mie scarpe da tennis eda atletica. Ed a seconda dei tornei che mi aspettano ne portopiù paia. Poi una scarpa col tacco perché a volte capita chedebba essere elegante, e assolutamente non mancano le mieLotto Legenda.

Hai uno stilista preferito?Me ne piacciono molti, ma alla fine prevale sempre il gustoitaliano, e quel suo stile inconfondibile. Laura Biagiotti rispecchia per me stile, eleganza e comodità.Per questo ultimamente ho scelto sempre i suoi capi daindossare in svariate situazioni, perché con la sua semplicità,eleganza ed un pizzico di estrosità mi rappresentapienamente.

Segui i consigli delle riviste di moda?Non direi… perché mi piace indossare ciò che più misoddisfa a prescindere se è di moda o meno. Però mipiace sfogliarle, prendere spunti e seguirne a volte glistili, i colori, ed il… sapore!

Parliamo di un’altra passione tipicamentefemminile, le borse. Quante ne hai? E le tuepreferite?

La borsa è quel complemento che a una donna nonmanca mai, è verissimo. Non ne ho una preferita.Ma ne possiedo moltissime. Tutte diverse, daquella semplicissima a quella molto importante, daquella colorata in tessuto a quella elegante in pelle.Mi piace sceglierla a seconda del momento, aseconda del mio umore, a seconda di ciò cheindosso… e alla situazione.

Baratteresti una vittoria a un torneo, RolandGarros escluso, per una borsa in coccodrillo diHermes?

Sono una competitiva nata. L’emozione di unavittoria è impagabile. Non la baratterei mai per unoggetto anche se pur così eccezionale come laborsa in coccodrillo di Hermes.

Che rapporto hai con i tacchi? Meglio alti obassi?

Per la vita che faccio ora, ho poche occasioni permetterli. Ma mi piacciono molto e se possoindossarli preferisco in assoluto quelli alti.

Qual è lo stile di abbigliamento che più tiappartiene e quello che mai vorrestiindossare?

Lo stile che più mi appartiene …. è il mio. Mi piacesentirmi libera di indossare ciò che più mi piace aseconda del momento e del mio umore. Non mipiacciono le cose “normali”. Ed amo vestire o moltoelegante ed estrema, o apparentemente tutta“disordinata”, con colori e stili in contrasto.

Le città della moda: Milano, Parigi, New York,Londra, Shanghai. Un tuo ricordo per ognunadi queste.

Non ho molto tempo per andare a fare shopping. Lamia vita ruota ancora attorno ad un campo da tennis ein palestra, per cui sono molto poche le volte in cui miconcedo di andare a zonzo per negozi. Spesso è lanecessità che mi spinge ad andare a comprarmi davestire anche se in realtà amo farlo. Di Milano ricordosempre le passeggiate con mia madre Luiscitaguardando le vetrine, di Parigi i suoi negozi chespaziano dall’alta moda al vintage, di New York eLondra amo la varietà di stili e la creatività che si respira

origini e dalle persone a me più care.Sei mai stata ospite di una sfilata?

Certo, e mi è piaciuto molto. In passato ho anche sfilato perl’azienda che allora mi rappresentava per l’abbigliamentotecnico. È stato divertente. All’inizio mi sentivo impacciata ma poi l’imbarazzo è scematoed ho iniziato a divertirmi molto.

I tuoi sogni nel cassetto?Ne ho molti, come tutti penso. Mi auguro di riuscire arealizzarne almeno qualcuno e di togliermi qualche sfizio. Peresempio avere dei figli.

E dopo il tennis che farai?Per ora non ci ho ancora pensato. In realtà ho dei desideri, manon si possono dire….

ad ogni angolo. Shanghai non ho ancora avuto il piacere discoprirla, ma penso che un giorno mi dedicherò un po’ di tempo peresplorare tutti quei luoghi che con il loro fascino mi catturano mache ancora non sono riuscita a visitare.

Immagino che tu sia legata soprattutto a Milano… cherapporto hai con la città?

Milano mi ricorda la mia infanzia. Sono cresciuta in uno deicondomini più grandi d’Europa dove, ogni pomeriggio, miritrovavo con gli amici per giocare nel parco comune. Ho ricordibellissimi legati a quel periodo. È una città che mi piace moltoanche se in realtà è da tempo che non la frequento. Sono venutavia da Milano quando non ero ancora maggiorenne per seguire lamia passione e la mia professione. 2010 was her year: we saw her triumph at the Roland GarrosTournament, Italy’s first ever female tennis player to win a“grand slam” trophy, and then at the Barcelona Open, as well asin the Fed Cup team competition against the United States. Andin 2011, Francesca Schiavone, Italy’s “Sportswoman of theyear”, made her debut whilst proving her exceptionalstubbornness by sticking it out in the longest challenge ever in the history of women’s tennis, almost fivehours against the Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova duringthe Australian Open. How does this 33-year-old Milanesewomen recover from such hard work? When she can, shebecomes a fashion victim. The only drawback is the amount oftime she has available, busy as she is with intercontinentalflights, tournaments and training sessions. In this article,however, Francesca reveals how a professional tennis playertransforms herself when the calendar enables her to take abreak. From warrior to diva, the distance can be very short. Itwon’t last long, however, as there is the French Open to defendat the beginning of June. So, it’ll be goodbye to her 12 cm heelsand back to her tennis shoes, whose technical characteristicsshe is no stranger to.

Let’s start with your biggest success, winning the FrenchOpen in 2010. What did you treat yourself to by way ofcelebration?

The best present of all was celebrating with my family and myclosest friends when I got back from Paris. My parents hadprepared a spread of food and fine wines, and friends turned upfrom all over Italy. It was fabulous. To tell the truth, however, Iwould also have liked to have had a holiday by the sea, to restup and deal with all that emotion. But when you’re a tennisplayer you don’t often get the chance to go on holiday. And Ihad to put it off.

Which shoes do you wear when out on the court?On the court I always wear a pair of Raptor Ultra II from Lotto.

What characteristics must your tennis shoes have for youto be fully satisfied?

My Raptors are based on advanced technical solutions thatenable me to step up my performance out on the court. Thedynamic concave-shaped sole, designed to the shape of myfoot, guarantees me the utmost in rebound, stability andreactivity. What’s more, they are fitted with a Syn-Pulsecushioning system, which guarantees excellent levels and givesme great twisting stability when side-stepping. I find it to be acomfortable shoe, well-balanced in the weight and in perfectsymbiosis with my foot.

And, finally, let’s talk about the shoes that you wear whenyou’re not on the tennis court… can you give us an idea ofhow many pairs you’ve got?

Shoes… I’ve got loads of shoes! Of all different types: extremelycomfortable, comfortable, boots, ones with very high heels. Ibet I’ve got about fifty. The problem is that I don’t get to wearthem that often. So when I do, I really go to town.

Your favourites?A grey pair with a 12 cm heel, which I would wear witheverything if I could because, even though they are really high,they are extremely comfortable, and my Lotto Legenda shoes ofcourse: comfortable, soft, in different colours which goeverywhere with me.

Would you describe yourself as a fashion victim?Not in the slightest. I love fashion, I like discovering all thelatest trends but I prefer wearing the things that I like most.

Which shoes go in your suitcase when setting off to play ina tournament?

Obviously I can’t go without my tennis and running shoes. And,depending on the number of tournaments, I have to take severalpairs. Then a pair with a heel because sometimes you’ve got tobe elegant, and my Lotto Legendas are simply a must.

Have you got a favourite designer?I like lots of them, but in the end I always got for the Italian look,with that unmistakable style. For me, Laura Biagiotti is areflection of style, elegance and comfort. That’s why, lately, I’ve been going for her clothes to wear invarious situations, because her simplicity, elegance and touch ofmoodiness is so me.

Do you follow the advice that is written in fashionmagazines?

Not at all… because I like wearing the things that I like bestregardless of whether it is fashionable or not. But I do likeflicking through them, getting ideas and, at times, following thestyles, the colours and the … taste!

Let’s talk about another typically female passion, namelybags. How many have you got? And what are yourfavourites?

The bag is an accessory that any woman simply must not bewithout, it’s so true. I haven’t got a favourite. But I’ve got loadsof them. All different, from those that are so simple to those thatare much more full-on, from ones that are colourful and madeout of fabric to those that are more elegant and made out ofleather. I like choosing them to suit my mood, to suit what I’mwearing… as well as the situation.

Would you swap a tournament victory, Roland Garrosexcluded, for a crocodile skin bag from Hermes?

I am a born competitor. You can’t put a price on the emotion ofwinning. I would never dream of swapping that feeling for anobject even if it was something as exceptional as a crocodileskin bag from Hermes.

What is your relationship with heels? Do you prefer themhigh or low?

Given my current lifestyle, I don’t get much chance to wearthem. But I like them very high and, if I can walk in them, I preferthose that are really high.

What style of clothes would you say suits you and whatwould you never be seen dressed in?

The style that suits me the most …. is mine. I like feeling free towear what I like the most depending on the moment and how

I’m feeling. I don’t like “normal” things. I love dressing veryelegantly and extreme, or apparently completely“disorganised”, in contrasting styles and colours.

The fashion capitals: Milan, Paris, New York, London, Shanghai. What memories do youhave of these places.

I don’t get much time to go shopping. My life still revolvesaround a tennis court and the gym, so I’ve had very little timeto hit the shops. It’s often out of necessity when I do go to buysomething to wear even though, in reality, it’s something I likedoing a lot. Milan always reminds me of going window-shopping with my Mother Luiscita, Paris has shops that range from haute couture to vintage, in New York and London I love the variety of styles and thecreativity that’s there on every corner. I still haven’t had thepleasure of discovering Shanghai, but I think one day I’ll setaside a bit of time to go and explore all those places that havecaptured me with their charm but which I still haven’tmanaged to visit.

I imagine you have very close ties with Milan… what isyour relationship with the city?

Milan reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in one of thebiggest blocks of flats in Europe where, every afternoon, Iused to meet up with my friends and off we’d go to play in thepark. I have very happy memories of that period. It is a citythat I like a lot even though, in reality, I haven’t been there for a long time now. I left Milan to followmy passion and my career when I was still underage. But my family still lives there, and every time I get back from atournament I like to go back to my origins and the people I’mclosest to.

Have you ever taken part in a fashion show?Oh yes, and I really liked it. In the past I also modelled for thecompany that represented me then for the technical clothing.It was great fun. I felt a bit clumsy at first but then I got over the embarrassment and started to really enjoymyself.

Do you have any unfulfilled dreams?I’ve got lots, just like everyone else I suppose.I hope some of them will come true so that I can satisfy awhim or two. Having children for example.

And after tennis what will you do?Up to now, I still haven’t given it much thought. Having saidthat, there are a few things I’d like to do, but I can’t quite sayjust yet….
