Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

PARACHUTE PACKERS Charles Plumb was a U. S. Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. He flew sev-enty-five combat missions before his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb safely ejected and parachuted into enemy terri-tory. He was captured and spent six years in a Communist prison be-fore his release and return to the United States. One day, when Plumb and his wife were having a meal in a restau-rant, a man came up to their table and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. “I kept wondering how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good morning, how are you?’ because I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor.” Plumb thought of the countless hours the man had spent below decks standing at a long table, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each parachute, holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn’t know. So, who’s packing your parachute? Like Charles Plumb, everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day: a physical parachute, mental parachute, emotional parachute, or spiri-tual parachute. Let us remember to say hello, please, or thank you, to congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something good in return.

Living your Stewardship As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize and thank all those who “pack your parachute,” whether family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or strangers. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Prayer for Veterans Day God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home.

Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. Have mercy on the poor, Lord, have mercy on the poor! May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! Amen.

Week of November 10, 2013

Listen to the Word (Luke 20:27-38) As you hear Paul’s words of comfort to the Thessalonians, what part of this reading was most welcome for you to hear? Which of Paul’s

words most affected you?

Look into your life Question for children: God always stays with you, no matter what. What signs can you see to help you believe that? Question for youth: Death is a hard reality in our human life, but if we believe in the resurrection, we know it isn’t the end of the jour-ney. How does your belief in heaven affect the way you live? Question for adults: Having faith in difficult times is hard! What makes you believe in the promise that God will be your strength, as Paul says?

Activities for the week

To better understand life everlasting, take a nature walk as a family and observe the cycle of life and death. What do you see, smell, hear, touch or taste that teaches you about life or death? Does nature tell us anything about our own life and death? After your walk, come home, fix a snack, and share with each other what you observed and what you learned. Make a prayer list of members of your community, family, or friends who have died in the past year. Place the list in a special prayer space in your home. Every day this week, say a prayer for the people on the list. Talk about the changes that seeds go through to begin new life. Find a picture book at the library that illustrates these changes. Together with your child, plant seeds of a non-flowering plant. Dis-cuss how seeds can show the journey from death to new life.

This is our eternal consolation and hope. Then will our joy be truly fulfilled. Monday, November 11 - St. Martin of Tours, bishop Wis1:1-7 Ps 139:1-10 Lk 17:1-6 The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world, guiding believers in the ways of forgiveness and charity. Tuesday, November 12 - St. Josaphat, bishop, martyr Wis 2:23-3:9 Ps 34:2-3, 16-19 Lk 17:7-10 Death is not an end but a passage to God who rescues those who call upon him. The demands of gospel love far exceed the claims of the Law. Wednesday, November 13 - St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, virgin Wis 6:1-11 Ps 82:3-4, 6-7 Lk 17:11-19 All authority is rooted in the wisdom of God who defends the lowly and afflicted. The gratuitous love of Jesus is met with gratitude and praise by the leper. Thursday, November 14 - Weekday Wis 7:22b-8:1 Ps 119:89-91, 130, 135, 175 Lk 17:20-25 Wisdom is praised as a reflection of eternal light, standing firm forever. Jesus, our wisdom, must suffer and be rejected. Friday, November 15 - Weekday (St. Albert the Great, bishop) Wis 13:1-9 Ps 19:2-5 Lk 17:26-37 The beauty of creation proclaims the glory of God. No one shall escape the Day of the Lord. Saturday, November 16 - Weekday (St. Margaret of Scotland, St. Gertrude) Wis 18:14-16; 19:6-9 Ps 105:2-3, 36-37, 42-43 Lk 18:1-8 In the Exodus is seen the calling forth of a new creation. The Lord hears the cry of those in need. Sunday, November 17 - Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Mal 3:19-20a Ps 98:5-9 2 Thes 3:7-12 Lk 21:5-19 Jesus teaches that his disciples will be persecuted as a necessary prelude to the parousia. Through their perseverance, they will emerge victorious when the Lord comes again. As we await the Day, let us conscientiously fulfill our Christian obligations. .

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s second reading, St. Paul prays that the

Thessalonians may be strengthened “in every

Stroke Scan, Inc will be here performing 8 ultrasound screenings on Monday, December 9, 2013

Do you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes? Do you have a family history of heart disease, stroke, or internal cancers? If so, do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possible serious disease. They will scan the arteries in the neck, the main artery off of the heart, the thyroid, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and the arteries in the legs. These screenings are typically NOT performed at annual check-ups, nor will insurance companies pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Collectively, these screenings cost thousands. Stroke Scan will be offering them to you for a $145 for all 8 combined. If you pre-register for the $145 complete pkg. you will also receive a Atiral Fibrillation screening FREE OF CHARGE. Insurance is NOT necessary to receive this discount. However, pre-registration IS necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today.
