RURAL DEVELOPMENT
Rural development is the second pillar of innovation of Italy’s Ministry for Agriculture, Food and Forests.
In partnership with Telespazio, Sofiter has developed the special know-how needed to provide support services covering all aspects of rural development.
These services are the result of the combined experience of Sofiter, Telespazio and SIN (the National Information System for Agricultural Development).

CASE STUDIES
KGS GROUP 14
Highway & MicroUAV After a long deal with Autostrade S.p.A., italian highways management company, in 2012 a first microUAV was sold as new tool to support maintenance jobs.
The idea, tested during six months, is to use an esacopter to verify the status of the spans, sections between two bridge support. This is done by making the esacopter fly under the span, with a camera on its top, recording a full HD movie.
The technicians can look every flaw in the structure, every seepage and every other defect they would have looked for using more traditional way to inspect the bridge.
The advantages are lower costs of inspections, higher speed of execution and better view of every flaw.
Anyway the real goal of Gruppo KGS is beyond selling one or more microUAVs. The goal is to develop, together with Autostrade, a turn key solution able to satisfy all needs that a highways management company can have all over the world.
INDUSTRIAL GOAL
Autostrade is the first step in the company roadmap that wants to develop more than one solution microUAV based, changing the general approach that is to propose the drone leaving to the customer the task to discover how to use it.
Gruppo KGS, on the strength of its experience, believe that this is the right approach to the market because the company will be able to increase the value of its own experiences and skills in many different fields like maintenance, agricolture and so on.
Introduzione al francese
KGS GROUP 15
BUSINESS VALUE
Autostrade is a very important customer because it allows to begin to speak of microUAV as industrial solution.
This means that civilian microUAV will be proposed in a variety of real world environmet as real tools to support at the best their recurrent tasks.
Obviously there has to be economical return in using the microUAV. In this case all the tests done demonstrated that also the quality of the inspection grows up and, more relevant, it is possible to avoid dangerous works.
E.R.M.E.S. Project
Another firm belief of Gruppo KGS about the future of civilian use of microUAVs is that at the moment there are too few sensors to be used, because of the youth of the market itself.
At the moment you can use quite only standard devices adapted to the microUAV and this means also to have one streaming for each kind of data available in a separate way.
Enabling multiple sensors, designed exactly to be used from microUAVs, means enabling microUAVs to more complex tasks but also to be able to process multiple data in a simple way.
KGS Group, through Sofiter, is involved in Ermes, a financed project designed to produce some new sensor prototypes, sensors light enough to be a viable payload also for microUAVs and able to produce multiple data streams.
The project plans to produce some relevant deliverables like a mini radar, a photo camera able to process image on board and a software system to process multiple data in real time.
The group is growing up its R&D capabilities thorugh two different approaches: being involved in financed projects, so to interact also with other competence center like universities or technological companies and acquiring, in its structure, new companies, like PRO S3, or new skills, able to follow up the state of the art of microUAVs and of the connected items.

BUSINESS VALUE
The value proposition of microUAVs is mainly in the capability to collect data and process them in real time, so to support many different kind of operations. Thinking of vertical solutions to propose to the market, this kind of ability becomes more and more relevant so it’s clear the goal the group wants to reach thorugh Ermes. The idea is to develop some frameworks, hardware and software, for multidimensional sensors and data process (data fusion). This will be the base for future development and new market proposal, allowing the group to gain a serious advantage on other competitors.
