The management team of Colonna has been active in the Estonian real estate market since 2006. Colonna Capital repre-sents primarily international investors in-vestments into Estonian property projects. Day-to-day operations of already acquired properties are handled by the local team of Colonna.

Today Colonna related investors own 43 commercial properties around Estonia, most of them located in and around Tallinn. The buildings are mainly used for offices, but also for logistics centres, industrial sites and retailing centres. Total leasable area exceeds 143 000m2 and these are leased to around 370 tenants.

In addition to the commercial properties Colonna is active also in residential devel-opment where we are at the moment fin-ishing a building of one apartment building and will soon start with the construction of 2-3 more buildings.

In the future we are planning to grow the business primarily by making additional acquisitions.

Estonia is a country where exciting and crea-tive people have chosen to live and work. It is a good place to live; its living environ-ment can easily compete with any number of European countries. We are an intriguing

border nation –located between the European Union and russia, between the sea on the one hand, forests and marshes on the other. Slavic and Scandinavian influence, German and Baltic heritage cross this border and mix in Estonia`s culture.

tiit Ojasoo, one of Estonia`s most internationally successful theatre directors and the head of the nO99 theatre says, that in a situation where the world is increasingly open, even aggressively so, Estonians are among the very few peoples and cultures that con-tain a secret. „A secret is something that tugs at one`s attention and calls to be discovered. this trait is not necessarily an advantage in competition –the one who shouts the loudest is always the first to be heard. And it is always possible, if you are one of the last to learn the so-called „answer“, then you are disappointed. But it is really true that Estonia does not just hand itself over. Most of its culture will always remain hidden, like an iceberg.“

Of course, Estonia is no terra incognita, but already because of its small size, the voice of its slightly over a million people often goes unheard. As its people´s lead-ers have said in the past, those who are small in number can only grow in an intellectual sense, in matters of the spirit.

Estonia is an „undiscovered pearl“. this has been confirmed by foreigners who have admitted that at one time they had prejudices about the place. first they had fallen in love with tallinn, and later discovered for themselves Estonia`s clean natural environment and its open spaces. As well as opportunities that one can no longer find anywhere else.

tiit Ojasoo, uno dei registi teatrali estoni più af-fermati e direttore del teatro nO99, afferma che in un contesto globale in cui ciascuno si sta aprendo agli altri, anche aggressivamente, gli estoni sono tra i pochi popoli e le poche culture che continuano a mantenere un segreto. „Un segreto è qualcosa che attrae la nostra attenzione e chiede di essere scoperto. E non è neces-sariamente un vantaggio in termini di competizione, poiché il primo ad essere ascoltato è solitamente chi gri-da più forte. Inoltre è sempre possibile rimanere delusi, specilamente se si è tra gli ultimi a scoprire la cosiddetta „risposta“. In ogni caso gli estoni non spifferano questo segreto, e gran parte della nostra cultura tende a rima-nere nascosta, come la parte sommersa degli iceberg“.

Di certo l’Estonia non è più una terra incognita, ma anche in virtù delle sue piccole dimensioni la voce del suo milione di abitanti o poco più, spesso, non viene ascoltata. E come i leader estoni hanno affermato in passato, quelli che sono poco numerosi non possono che crescere nell’intelletto e nello spirito.

L’Estonia è una „perla nascosta“, come confermano molti stranieri, i quali spesso ammettono di essere arri-vati nel Paese con dei pregiudizi. Per prima cosa si inna-morano di tallinn, e poi scoprono le bellezze ambientali, la pulizia e gli spazi aperti delle campagne, oltre a molte opportunità che non sono più disponibili altrove.

feeL tHe DesiGnDesign means the appearance, feel, ease of use and, above all, functionality of a product. it involves an understanding of needs, innovation and the very best traditions.

Abloy’s range of door handles includes models designed by the company’s own in-house design department as well as by top Finnish designers, such as Alvar Aalto, Harri Koskinen and Timo Sarpaneva.

A handle created by a young Estonian de-signer in 2012 complements the ABLOY product range. The Estonian branch of Abloy Oy organ-ized a design competition to find a unique new door handle for its range of products. The com-petition proved a success, with the jury selecting young designer Mihkel Mäll’s ‘Abloy Tunne’, or ‘That Abloy Feeling’ as the winner.

RAUL-STIG RäSTA (36), a music producer, composer and an artist himself, is a people’s favourite whose song ”Good Bye to Yesterday” will represent estonia in the eurovision song Contest. i

t is actually quite nice to be no-ticed and praised, Stig agrees. Appropriately, just in time for the competition, Stig’s Eurovi-sion stage partner, Elina Born,

finished recording her debut album.Stig tells us that he himself is also

always asked about a solo album and keeps claiming that he likes to remain in the background and produce for oth-ers. More than alone and more than shining solo in the spotlight. Stig is not Sting. But he likes to make music and there’s a lot of work out there for him as a music producer. Even though Rästa tried making commercials for a day job for a while, he finally ran out of time for making music, the studio was left empty.

All-in-all, the musician’s occupa-tion allows to get by in Estonia. “I am driving a 25 years old car, you don’t need a new car... I have a small apart-ment.” A luxury class Mercedes and an apartment in the elite area of the city, in Kadriorg, are, of course, another matter. The 1989 Mercedes has a “super cool feeling”. The fuel consumption of the dignified car is “outrageous”, but - “I don’t drive much and I rarely leave the city with the car.”

Even though Stig says that money is not all that important, he only wants to make music, it is not impossible that money may start rolling in should they win. And once the millions start to ac-cumulate, it will probably also be easier to become a target of plagiarism accu-sations. As the world practice shows in the light of the recent “Blurred Lines” case, even by shooting certain “similar-ities” “from the hip”.

Stig as a music producer admits that it is very common to learn from the work others, but one must be aware of the limits. “We are sometimes told that there are similarities,” says Stig, that “Goodbye to Yesterday” has also been compared to several things. Stig also remarks that he himself has had a fin-ished song on his computer and then you hear it somewhere, it’s already been done. This is pop music!

Stig likes to ride a bicycle, a long-board or go surfing. What he likes most, however, is driving away from the city to his country house by the sea. Accompanied by his dog, Jackson, and his significant other.

Il produttore di musica, compositore e artista Raul-Stig RäSta (36 anni) è il beniamino nazionale e la sua canzone ”Goodbye To Yesterday” rappresenta l’Estonia al concorso musicale Eurovisione.

Di per se è bello essere notati e accettati, affer-ma Stig. Tra l’altro, Elina Born, con la quale Stig si esibirà sul palco dell’Eu-

rovisione, ha appena composto il suo primo album di debutto mentre i due artisti si preparavano al concorso mu-sicale.

Stig afferma, che spesso viene chie-sto anche a lui quando farà il suo al-bum da solista, e continua a conferma-re che a lui piace stare nel retroscena e lasciar fare agli altri, più che anda-re alla ribalta da solo come solista. Stig non è Sting. A lui piace fare musica e crede che ci siano ampie opportunità di lavoro come produttore musicale. Rä-sta ha pure provato a lavorare durante il giorno come promoter, ma alla fine non rimaneva più tempo per fare musica, lo studio rimaneva vuoto.

In fin dei conti, è possibile guada-gnarsi da vivere come musicista in Estonia. ”Guido una macchina che ha 25 anni, non bisogna per forza avere una macchina nuova... e ho un piccolo appartamento.” Ovviamente, la prima è una Mercedes di lusso e l’appartamento si trova in una zona d’elite della capita-le, a Kadriorg. Una Mercedes di 89 anni è sempre ”un’emozione eccezionale”. Quest’auto d’epoca ”consuma un sac-co di carburante”, ma ”non guido mai tanto e con questa macchina non vado spesso fuori città”.

Anche se Stig dice che il denaro non è importante, e che vuole fare solo mu-sica, dopotutto non è neppure impos-sibile iniziare a fare bei soldi e guada-gnare bene. E se si inizia ad accumulare milioni, è anche più facile essere accu-sati di plagiarismo. Come si è visto nel caso recente del brano ”Blurred Lines”

che è stato accusato ”impulsivamen-te” di avere delle ”similitudini” con altri brani.

Essendo produttore di musica, Stig riconosce che è molto normale pren-dere spunto dagli altri, ma bisogna ri-conoscere i propri limiti. ”E’ successo, che ci hanno detto, che il brano è simi-le”, dice Stig, e che anche ”Goodbye to Yesterday” è stato paragonato a molte altre produzioni. Inoltre, Stig fa nota-re che anche lui nel computer ha avuto una canzone che aveva prodotto pre-cedentemente, e che poi ha sentito in giro, ed era già stata fatta. Questa è la musica pop!

Stig va volentieri in bicicletta, in longboard o fa surf. Ma la cosa che gli piace di più è lasciare la città e andare nella sua casa al mare assieme al cane Jackson e la compagna.

a real estate business man Roberto De Silvestri from Monaco found himself in Estonia by total chance. On the way to Helsinki, he came by a brochure about tallinn and that was enough

to make an impulsive decision to go across the gulf of Finland to tallinn for a couple of days. What he saw and experienced here, left such a strong impression to Roberto that to date, he has considered tallinn as his second home already for 17 years. a comfortable elegant apartment in tallinn Old town, wide and fascinating circle of acquaintances and European-level restaurants are the reasons why Roberto feels here well as in his home city Monte Carlo. But this is not the only reason. One of his most important business-es is located in tallinn. the investment company Colonna Capital has invested in the Estonian real estate market over 120 million Euros.

“When the real estate market in Monaco and France was still dazed, Estonia showed clear signs of activity,” Roberto recalls the reasons why he started to invest specifically in real estate. today, the business man who is also active in the banking world regards highly a low bureaucracy and well-functioning administration in Estonia.

“all my business partners are gentlemen whom i know personally,” says Roberto. “these wealthy men with great life experiences have dis-covered the hidden potential in Estonia and refer to Estonia as Switzerland of Eastern Europe.”

Quello che ha visto una volta arrivato in Esto-nia gli ha lasciato un impressione talmente forte che Roberto da diciassette anni chiama tallinn la sua seconda casa.

little Estonia is a big festival country – there are yoga festivals and winter swimming festivals and, of course, the huge song festival (laulupidu) that is held every five years. however, the international festivals that connect the people here with the rest of the world are especially important.

On the one hand, these festivals show foreigners what is special about Estonia and what we are skilled at, but on the other hand, they also help

this place at the edge of Europe from becoming peripheral.

the three biggest international festivals are headed by three tough Estonian women, three graces from three different generations. When it comes to women and age, it’s not usually polite to talk about it, but it is a fact that deserves recognition that the 71 year old AnnE Erm has been at the helm of the international jazz festival Jazzkaar for over a quarter of a century alrea-dy, the 59 year old TiinA LOkk took the Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) into the European big leagues, and the 36 year old HELEn SiLdnA created one of the leading European music festi-vals tallinn Music Week (tMW).

Springtime is high season for festivals in Esto-nia – that is when tMW, Jazzkaar and Estonian Music Days are held, but besides those there is also one of the world’s leading extreme sports festivals Simple Session, which celebrated its 15th birthday this year.

international interest is high and many visitors also flock to the literary festivals that take place in the spring – Prima Vista in the university town of

tartu and HeadRead held in the capital of tallinn. a lot of foreign artists also participate in the

visual theatre festival treff (puppetry) and the modern performing arts festival Baltoscandal or Saal Biennaal, and the theatre festival Midwinter Night’s Dream.

in the fall, there is Baltic Session, a festival geared towards youth interested in international street art.

the highlights of the year are towards its end, when the Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) is held.

tiina lokk, director of the Black Nights Film Festival, admits than when starting PÖFF 19 years ago, she didn’t even dare to dream about the fes-tival growing into one the biggest annual cultural events in Estonia and one of the definitive film festivals of Northern and Eastern Europe, with 77 thousand admissions sold and more than 250 feature films shown every year.

last year’s FiaPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) upgrade was yet another dream come true and not only set the festival more firmly on the map of the global film industry, on par with the big ones like Cannes, Berlinale, Moscow and Venice. tiina lokk, direc-tor of the Black Nights Film Festival says that it

in spring 2016, music is a good reason to come to tallinn, but definitely not the only one.

“the core of our programme has been music, but since our restaurant scene has also become very exciting, we also added great restaurants to the festival roster, as well as unique venues for free city stages like shops and art galleries, a cra-ft beer festival,” says Helen Sildna, head of tMW. all this so that we would have the opportunity to show that tallinn is one of the coolest cities in Europe, where people should want to come back and see more than the medieval Old town, adds Helen.

Jazzkaar is the largest jazz festival in the Baltic States, and next spring it is celebrating its 27th year already. Over the last two weeks in ap-ril, the best in jazz can be heard in tallinn as well as across Estonia. Besides the biggest jazz music finds in the world and Europe’s exciting talents, the festival also offers interesting special projects – a free concert day, kitchen concerts, urban space projects, etc. “the rainbow coloured jazz party Jazzkaar (‘vikerkaar’ is rainbow in Estonian) is definitely a good reason to visit Estonia in april and welcome the coming of spring with us,” says anne Erm, the grand old lady of Estonian jazz and festivals.

EsTonIa In fEsTala piccola Estonia è in realtà un paese di grandi feste: festival dello yoga, del nuoto invernale, ed ovviamente laulupidu, l’enorme festival musicale che si tiene ogni cinque anni. le manifestazioni internazionali che mettono in contatto i cittadini estoni con il resto del mondo sono generalmente considerate molto importanti da noi.

in particolare, questi avvenimenti ci permetto-no di mostrare ai visitatori stranieri le nostre eccellenze ed aiutano il nostro Paese, situato

al confine dell’unione, a sentirsi meno “periferi-co”.

i tre più grandi festival internazionali sono gui-dati da tre energiche donne, le nostre tre grazie estoni di tre generazioni diverse. Quando si parla di signore non è generalmente educato menzio-narne l’età, tuttavia è per noi un atto di stima e riconoscimento ricordare che la settantunenne AnnE Erm ha guidato il nostro festival jazz Jaz-zkaar per più di un quarto di secolo; che la cin-quantanovenne TiinA LOkk ha guadagnato alla rassegna internazionale di cinema Black Nights Film (PÖFF) un posto tra le migliori d’Europa e che la trentaseienne HELEn SiLdnA ha fondato la tallinn Music Week (tMW) a tutt’oggi uno dei festival di punta nell’area dell’unione.

in Estonia il periodo delle rassegne e delle manifestazioni culturali è la primavera, ed è in tale periodo che si svolgono ad esempio il tMW, Jazzkaar e gli Estonian Music Days, oltre a molti altri eventi come il festival di sport estremi Simple Session, che celebra quest’anno il suo quindice-simo anniversario. attiva nel campo delle arti visive e performati-ve, capace di attrarre molti artisti stranieri per partecipare al festival delle marionette di treff, al festival delle arti performative moderne Balto-scandal, alla Saal Biennaal o al festival teatrale Sogno d’una Notte di Mezza Estate.

D’autunno ha luogo invece il Baltic Session, dedicato alla street-art internazionale, aspet-tando la fine dell’anno, quando si tiene il Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF). tiina lokk, direttri-ce della manifestazione, ammette che quando diciannove anni fa fondò PÖFF non avrebbe mai immagginato potesse crescere tanto da diventa-re il maggiore evento culturale Estone e uno dei migliori dell’Europa settentrionale ed orientale, con più di settantasettemila presenze e duecen-tocinquantea film in concorso ogni anno.

lo scorso anno il PÖFF è stato promosso dalla FiaPF (International Federation of Film Produ-cers Associations), avverando non solo i sogni di molti ma confermando soprattutto l’avvenimento sulla mappa globale dell’industria cinematogra-fica, al pari di Cannes, Berlino, Mosca e Venezia. tiina lokk, direttrice del festival, è convinta che il riconoscimento “pone nuovi obiettivi con cui confrontarsi costruttivamente, e ci permette di sognare ancora più in grande; ci conferma inoltre di essere sulla buona strada, una strada che oggi più che mai, in quest’epoca agitata, è quella di connettere le persone offrendo loro non solo un prodotto artisticamente soddisfacente, ma che sia in grado di esplorare le grandi Domande, e le questioni fondamentali della nostra presenza sul pianeta e gli argomenti più scottanti della scena regionale e globale”.

Nella primavera 2016 la musica sarà sicu-ramente un buon motivo per venire a visitare tallinn, ma di certo non l’unico:

“la musica è sempre stata il cuore del pro-gramma, ma considerando che il profilo della ristorazione è cresciuto molto, abbiamo deciso di coinvolgere diversi ristoranti eccezionali ed offrire location dedicate, diffuse nella città, a disposizione di negozi, gallerie d’arte ed anche un festival della birra artigianale”, ci racconta He-lena Sildna, direttrice del tMW, “con l’obiettivo di mostrare come tallinn sia una delle città più cool d’Europa ed invitare i visitatori a ritornare, perché c’è molto di più che la medievale Città Vecchia da vedere”.

“Jazzkaar è il più grande festival jazz dell’area baltica, e la prossima primavera festeg-gerà il suo ventisettesimo anniversario. Durante le ultime due settimane d’aprile, tallinn e tutta l’Estonia risuonano al ritmo del miglior jazz mondiale ed europeo, ma il festival ospita anche molte attività collaterali, come il free concert day, i concerti da cucina ed interessanti progettazioni dello spazio urbano. “il festival arcobaleno Jaz-zkaar (vikerkaar significa arcobaleno in estone) è da solo un’ottima ragione per visitare l’Estonia in aprile ed accogliere la primavera con noi” – anne Erm, signora del jazz estone Helen Sildna

The most important national celebration of the country is the song festival (laulupidu), and even the events that took place at the end of the 80s and that helped to make Estonia independent and free again are called the singing revolution!

in spring, from March to april, three major fes-tivals – tallinn Music Week, Estonian Music Days and Jazzkaar – bring very powerfully Estonian music and artists in front of the local and foreign audience

if we speak about big names of classical music in the world, we cannot look past the composers arvo Pärt and Erki-Sven tüür, but there are many other remarkable names as well.

in very different styles of pop music, the folk-rock band Ewert & the two Dragons is currently building a reputation in the world. the band is introducing its third album “Circles” made for Sire Records.

Pop singer Kerli, Maria Minerva active in the underground scene, dance music producer Mord

Fustang are currently living in the uSa.a popular folk-metal band Metsatöll, which

recently issued their new EP Pummelung, uses the chronology of the local natural religion (maa-usk). So, according to the calendar, it is now year 10228. it begins with the Billingen catastrophe of 8213 before Common Era, when the Baltic ice lake broke its way into the ocean and most of the current territory of Estonia appeared from under the water.

three Estonian women, who perform their creation mostly in Estonian, are very requested performers both in Estonia and abroad. the women are a brilliantly diverse and experimental Kadri Voorand, she just won the award of the best jazz artist, Mari Kalkun, interlacing naturally Estonian traditional and author’s creation, and a violinist and singer Maarja Nuut, tallinn Music Week’s notable artist winner.

Estonian folk-innovator Maarja Nuut is quite rightly one of the brightest hopes of Estonian music, being chosen as the first artist from the Baltic region to perform at the official program-me of the leading world music festival WOMEX last year, receiving rave reviews for both her live performances and recordings, and making even Simon le Bon of Duran Duran praise her song “Üts pruut”.

the Estonian-rooted and Switzerland-based artist ingrid lukas is also the real creator of her own artform. Her current third album “Demi-monde” takes you to a place where urban beats unite with mystical and calm sounds, hymnal strings with grungy bass lines and the Estonian Regilaul tradition with the modern song forms.

ingrid lukas: ”For me, Estonia is an oasis of nature. On this spot on earth, where i was born, the nature is especially intense and vibrant. in the air, there is freedom and inspiration in the form of thousands of melodies. You can just catch them from the Demimonde. i love to go to the forest with my friends and pick mushrooms and berries. We can lose ourselves for hours. We hug the trees, we light the candles for the deceased souls and we sing, sing, sing.

i wrote a song about it “Blue, black, white - We`re hungry for silence, a shimmering night silver clear. the armies are marching and beating their boots left and right, the choirs keep singing a song of the sea, earth and light”

Mari Kalkun, is mostly well-known for her powerful voice, storytelling and the ability to create warm and spontaneous atmosphere at

her concerts. Her songs are accompanied by minimalist arrangements for guitar, piano and unique Estonian zither. She comes from the most southern corner of Estonia, a place on the edge of borders and the Eu called Võrumaa. Her cur-rent third album is called “tee ilo” and it has been recorded with her band Runorun.

Mari kalkun: “Estonia is a really good place for adventurers – there are many almost un-discovered and well-hidden natural and cultural treasures. i am fascinated in Estonia (especially in South-Estonia) by those two the most – dense forests, where you can wander around, and rich traditional culture – you can still find pretty vivid and modern indications of it here and there. i like this country because things have not been smoothed and flattened here – it still has its primitivity, wilderness and roughness.

and of course, one more splendid thing that a lot of Estonians think is elementary, but it is not so in the big world - silence and clean air, which, i think, are the most significant (natural) resources of Estonia.”

Maarja nuut: “Estonia is a place where you can meditate in the forest and then implement those crazy ideas with very little effort! as it is so small, it is possible to create personal contacts and reach the right persons, and this inspires to create.”

Il più grande festival nazionale è il festival della canzone (laulupidu) e l’evento che ha portato all’indipendenza e alla libertà della nazione alla fine degli anni ottanta del 1900 si chiama la rivoluzione cantata (singing revolution)!

in questo momento, la musica estone sta vi-vendo di bei successi sia per quanto riguar-da la musica classica e la musica moderna, che il jazz e vari generi della musica pop.

Da marzo ad aprile sono organizzati tre grandi festival musicali che, con grande energia, pre-sentano al pubblico locale e ai visitatori del paese musica e artisti estoni. i festival sono i seguenti: Tallinn Music Week (la settimana della musica a

tallinn), Eesti Muusika Päevad (i giorni della mu-sica estone, Estonian Music Days) e il festival della musica jazz chiamato Jazzkaar.

potente, la sua arte di narrazione e l’abilità di cre-are un’atmosfera avvolgente e spontanea nei suoi concerti. le sue canzoni sono accompagnate da arrangiamenti minimalistici per chitarra, piano-forte e zither, eccezionale strumento estone. la cantante proviene dalla parte più meridionale dell’Estonia, da un luogo al limite dei confini e dell’unione Europea chiamato Võrumaa. il suo terzo album è intitolato ”tee ilo” ed è registrato con il complesso Runorun.

Mari kalkun: ”Per gli avventurieri, l’Estonia è una vera e propria riserva naturale. Qui si tro-vano molti luoghi reconditi e poco frequentati, nonché’ molti tesori culturali. Proprio queste due cose mi intrigano di più dell’Estonia (soprattutto nell’Estonia meridionale), le foreste più folte dove inoltrarsi e la ricca tradizione culturale, dalla qua-le si può ancora trovare ispirazione e espressioni molto vive e moderne. a me piace questa terra, perché’ non è raffinata e lucidata, ma è ancora primitiva, selvaggia e grezza.

E ovviamente, un’altra cosa importante che è indiscutibile per molti estoni, anche se non lo è per niente nel resto del mondo: il silenzio e l’aria pulita, che secondo me sono i valori più impor-tanti di questa terra.”

l’innovatrice del folk estone Maarja Nuut è quasi sicuramente una delle stelle emergenti e più grandi speranze della musica estone. infatti, la cantante violinista è stata scelta come prima artista proveniente dai paesi baltici ad esibirsi l’anno scorso al festival mondiale della musica WOMEX. la cantante ha pure ricevuto recen-sioni entusiasmanti sia per le sue esibizioni dal vivo che per i suoi dischi, oltre che a ricevere un elogio da Simon le Bon dei Duran Duran per la sua canzone ”Üts pruut”.

inoltre, ingrid lukas, artista con origini estoni e stabilito in Svizzera, è il vero creatore della performance artistica di Maarja Nuut. il suo terzo album più recente, ”Demimonde”, ci porta in un luogo dove ritmi urbani si mescolano a sonorità calme e spirituali, violini angelici e si abbinano con accompagnamenti di basso grunge e melo-die della tradizione estone (Regilaul) si fondono con espressioni musicali moderne.

ingrid lukas: ”Per me, l’Estonia è un’oasi del-la natura. in questo luogo della terra, dove sono nato, la natura è particolarmente intensa e vib-rante. Nell’aria, c’è libertà e ispirazione che danno forma a mille melodie. le puoi captare dall’album ”Demimonde”. adoro andare nella foresta con i miei amici e raccogliere funghi e frutti di bosco. Ci potremmo perdere per ore. abbracciamo gli alberi, accendiamo delle candele per le anime scomparse e cantiamo, cantiamo e cantiamo. Ci ho scritto una canzone ”Blu, Nero, Bianco” (Blue, Black, White) che fa: siamo affamati di silenzio, una scintillante notte dal cielo terso. i soldati stanno marciando e battendo i loro stivali a si-nistra e a destra, i cori continuano a cantare una canzone dedicata al mare, terra e luce”.

karmen with a K, that is, karMEn pEdaru is married to an italian, Riccardo Ruini. From the window of her apartment in Rome, she can see the towers of the world`s most

famous cathedral, St. Peter`s. From her tallinn apartment she can see St. Olaf`s church. But Karmen does not just recommend churches to those visiting Estonia. important landscape mark-ers include old, high chimneys, and around such buildings there is always something going on, as, for example in Rotterman City, the tellisikivi area, or the Culture Cauldron. „For me, the Old town is the ultimate, but it is certainly worth visiting places outside it -- to have a meal in Kalamaja, take a walk in Kadriorg, and stop by some art museums.“ She recommends that the visitor get acquainted with Estonia`s high achievements in design – from fashion to furniture – „but these are things one can also discover on the internet.“

alExandra ElizabEth ljadov: in tallinn i would certainly suggest visiting the Old town and the Seaplane Harbour; for more active people, i would suggest climbing the steps to the top of the television tower. also, i would certainly recommend everyone to have a taste of classic Estonian black bread and ice cream. in the sum-mer, you should definitely drive to Pärnu beach, visit a spa or take a trip from the yacht marina out to the bay. another enjoyable adventure is surfing at Ristna on the coast of the island of Hiiumaa, because the waves are high. But it is nice just to take a walk along the beach and look for ancient stones with holes bored into them. in the winter, paying a visit to Otepää is a good idea, especially during the World Cup events. Ski enthusiasts will find the famous slopes at tehvandi to be a real challenge.

kadri vahErsalu: My first suggestion is to find a local who knows Estonia well, rent a car, and drive out of the city into nature. Our rural countryside is clean and lovely, one of Estonia`s proudest features! Of course, you should also en-joy Estonian cuisine – we have so much to offer! i have noticed that what seemed ordinary when i was young now seems special. Find yourself a real Estonian grandmother, who will prepare food for you that is better than in restaurants adorned with Michelin stars.

anni jürgEnson: Make a day-trip to Haap-salu (100 km from tallinn), an idyllic small town and seaside health resort. Relax at one of the many spas; stroll around and enjoy its lovely wooden architecture and have a lunch at one of many nice cafés. among my favourites are Hapsal Dietrich and the restaurant at the Haapsalu Re-

sort Hall. Haapsalu is also well known for its great second-hand and antique stores.

harlEth kuusik: Of course one should visit the tallinn Old town, and go to a cozy restaurant that has Estonian food. i suggest you try kama (a grain dish), and black bread. Since Estonia is so tiny, it is well worth it to drive around to differ-ent places-to Saaremaa, for example, Pärnu and tartu, and Põlva, along with other smaller towns. Or just to enjoy the beautiful natural surround-ings and have a picnic.

karMEn pEdaru, è sposata con l’italiano Riccardo Ruini, e dalla finestra del suo appartamento a Roma, può vedere la cupola dalla più famosa basilica del mondo , qualla di

S. Pietro. il suo appartamento di tallinn invece si affaccia sulla chiesa di S. Olaf, ma le sue racco-mandazioni per i turisti in arrivo in Estonia non si limitano alle chiese: Karen ci consiglia anche altri luoghi storici, come le vecchie ciminiere intorno alle quali succede sempre qualcosa: ad esempio in Rotterman City, nell’area di tellisikivi o al Cal-derone della Cultura. „Per me la Città Vecchia è la parte migliore di tallinn, ma ci sono senza dubbio altri spazi notevoli anche fuori di essa. Potreste ad esempio andare a mangiare a Kalamaja, fare una passeggiata Kadriorg e fermarvi in qualche museo“ Karmen raccomanda inoltre di misurarsi con l’alto livello raggiunto dall’Estonia in ambito di design – dalla moda all’arrademanto. „Ma que-ste sono cose che potete scoprire da soli anche tramite internet“

l’estate non si può non visitare la spiaggia di Pär-nu, dove c’è un’ottima spa e da dove è possibile visitare la baia via mare dalla marina degli yacht. inoltre, per via delle alte onde, è possibile fare surf nella località di Ristna, sull’isola di Hiiumaa, ma anche una semplice passeggiata sulla spiag-gia, magari alla ricerca di antiche pietre forate è molto piacevole. in inverno è una buona idea visitare Otepää, specialmente durante la Coppa del Mondo di sci: le discese di tehvandi sono una sfida anche per gli appassionati.

kadri vahErsalu: il primo consiglio che mi viene in mente è: trovate qualcuno del luogo che conosca bene il Paese, affittate una macchina e avventuratevi nella natura. le nostre campagne sono pulite e deliziose, una delle cose che ci ren-de più orgogliosi del nostro Paese! Poi godetevi la cucina estone, ha veramente molto da offrire! Mi sono resa conto che le cose che sembravano normali quando era piccola ora mi sembrano speciali: trovatevi una vera nonna estone, ed assaggerete ricette che superano di gran lunga qualsiasi piatto possiate acquistare in ristorante stellato.

anni jürgEnson: Passate una giornata a Haapsalu (100 km da tallinn): è un piccolo villag-gio idilliaco sulla costa ed un centro benessere:

potrete rilassarvi in una delle tante spa, passeg-giare godendovi la squisita architettura in legno e pranzare in uno dei molti caratteristici caffé. tra i miei preferiti ci sono il Hapsal Dietrich e il ristorante del Haapsalu Resort Hall. Haapsalu è anche famosa per i negozietti dell’usato e gli antiquari.

harlEth kuusik: Sicuramente non si può non visitare la Città Vecchia di tallinn e rilassarsi in uno dei suoi confortevoli ristoranti con dell’ottimo cibo estone. Consiglio vivamente di provare il Kama (a base di granaglie) ed il pane nero. Poi l’Estonia è così piccola che vale la pena di visitarla in macchina e raggiungere Saaremaa ad esempio, o Pärnu, Põlva e le città minori. Oppure godersi un bel picnic immersi nell’eccezionale natura del paese.

Joonas Torim (25) and marko ala (27) – these two young men are the founders of OOT-OOT. They both share a passion for vintage Scandinavian furniture and complement each other in their everyday work

OOT-OOT

By now a number of popular new furni-ture items have been added to the oot-oot series – they are all characterised by the light airy scandinavian approach,

thoroughly constructed ergonomics and high quality materials. The designers consider the time they spent restoring and selling vintage furniture from the 50s, 60s and 70s as the basis of their production: “We learned so much about quality and ergonomics. We sat on so many sofas and discussed how people these days sit and lie and what kind of sofas they need.”

Joonas and marko value authenticity and

honesty, especially when it comes to materials and quality – a sturdy frame, high-class bolster, good quality German springs and natural linen as a base. mass production only focuses on trends and emotional reactions – it has little to do with good quality or sustainability. Furniture by oot-oot is produced to stand the test of time. The designers have also considered every detail as they constructed their new studio. “most of our waking hours are spent at the studio, essentially we only go home to sleep. Why should we be satisfied with anything less than a harmoni-ous and functional working environment?” asks

Sono già molti i pezzi d’arredamento aggiunti con buon successo di pubblico alla serie oot-oot, tutti caratterizzati dall’approccio leggero e arioso dello

stile scandivano, completamente ergonomici e realizzati con materiali di alta qualità. i designer considerano il tempo speso a restaurare mobili degli anni ’50, ’60 e ’70 come la base del loro lavoro: “Ci ha insegnato così tanto sulla qualità e l’ergonomia. Ci siamo seduti su così tanti divani e discusso molto su come la gente si siede o si sd-raia, e di quale tipo di divani possa aver bisogno”.

Joonas e marko danno estrema importanza l’autenticità e l’onestà, specialmente per quanto riguarda i materiali e la qualità: si comincia con un solido telaio, uno schienale d’alta classe, otti-me molle tedesche e lino naturale. la produzio-ne di massa è interessata soltanto alle mode e a suscitare reazioni emozionali, non ha nulla a che vedere con la buona qualità o la sostenibilità. i mobili oot-oot sono invece pensati per resiste-re al tempo. i designer sono stati attentissimi ai dettagli anche nella costruzione del loro nuovo studio: “passiamo la maggior parte del nostro tempo in questo studio, e praticamente andia-mo a casa solo per dormire. Perché avremmo dovuto accontentarci di qualcosa in meno che uno spazio di lavoro armonioso e funzionale?”, si chiede Joonas. marko aggiunge: “l’ambiente di lavoro perfetto deve ispirarti, deve essere un posto in cui puoi goderti il tuo lavoro. Deve avere stile, essere spazioso e onesto!”. nel loro studio anche gli attrezzi da lavoro sono fatti con materiali autentici, niente plastica. mentre sviluppavano con cura il loro studio e i prodotti, i due giovani fondatori di oot-oot hanno anche messo gli occhi sui mercati internazionali: “non saremo mai ikEa, ma ci piacerebbe attrarre dai paesi confinanti clienti che sanno quello che vogliono e danno il giusto valore all’autenticità e alla qualità”.

al momento, tuttavia, sono ben felici di coccolare i loro clienti locali, ai quali spesso con-segnano personalmente i mobili acquistati.

il fiore all’occhiello della loro produzione attuale è il bellissimo divano Cosmo. il concet-to principale dietro i prodotti di oot-oot è offrire sostenibilità attraverso la durevolezza, e l’obiettivo è offrire pezzi capaci di sfidare il tempo. materiali di qualità, un design attento, ergonomia e un’incantevole funzionalità sono gli ingredienti per creare nuovo classici, questi sono i prodotti oot-oot, pensati per rappresentare valori che erano andati persi nel tempo.

Joonas. marko adds: “an ideal workspace is inspiring – the kind of environment that lets you enjoy your work. stylish, spacious and earnest!” in their new workshop even the tools they use are of authentic materials, no plastic. Carefully developing their workshop and products, the two young men have set their sights on international markets: “We will never be ikEa, but we are look-ing for clients from our neighbouring countries who know what they want and value authenticity and quality.” However, at the moment they still enjoy working with local customers who often get their furniture delivered by the two designers personally.

The crown jewel of their current product line is the handsome sofa Cosmo. The driving concept behind their products is sustainability through durability – the products are designed to withstand the test of time. Quality materials, carefully thought through design and ergo-nomics together with enchanting functionality become the cornerstones for new classics – the products created by oot-oot represent values that have become forgotten over time.

Estonian design – this is a modernistic language of form and Nordic design tradition. Preference is given to minimalism – little details, functional beauty and natural impression. The trump card is the conservative form and original material that can also been seen as environmental awareness.

BEgiNNiNg Of ESTONiaN DESigN

at the beginning of the 20th century, the national movement began to consider, in addition to its language, art and architecture as a part of its identity. The combination of (old) Estonia and (modern) Europe became the basis for forming the Estonian style.

in Estonia. The majority of them are running small businesses and preparing small product lines. They all try to find a producer, marketer and buyer by themselves. naturally, some of the product designers have joined together into the offices and provide design services to producers; however, few of them work as statutory design-ers for production companies.

LEaDiNg BraNchES Of DESigN

The most important areas are high-tech prod-ucts, household products, lights, furniture, spa inventory, textile, vehicles, fashion and graphic design.

The largest area of Estonian design is the fur-niture design. Partly this can be explained by the tradition. This is the reason why the name luther, the man who established the industry of ply-wood and furniture in Estonia, has for years been equivalent to furniture for Estonians.

furNiTurE frOm PLywOOD

an exciting example of Estonian furniture design is Borealis, a trademark created by Jaanus orGusaar. started as a fashion designer whose hand-made footwear and clothing became legends, one of his headgears turned into his first lampshade. Followed by lights and furniture. Bionic architecture, that searches for similar lines and forms from nature and architecture became his favourite topic. Jaanus became interested in form that is also a pattern at the same time. By using plywood with milled patterns, he builds furniture and lights that are easy to assemble.

orgusaar has received all design awards pos-sible to have in Estonia and is very much appreci-ated also abroad.

another direction is furniture from recycled wood. These objects are playful and with unique texture. Their original finishing speaks about the previous life of the details.

Derelict Furniture, a trademark created by Tõnis kalvE and aHTi GrünBErG produces modern minimalistic furniture from the aban-doned material with interesting stories.

among the large manufacturers, standard, the largest company in the Baltic states engaged in furnishing public amenities, and Thulema are worth pointing out.

SPa DESigN

The spa culture in Estonia is over two centuries old. Being up-to-date with what is going on in the world, both bath producers and trendy en-ergy cocoon creators are able to provide com-petition on wider market. one of the examples is

the bath designer villi PoGGa, whose com-pany aquator has become a leading developer and manufacturer of medical baths in the Baltic states and who uses his experience obtained from medicine to create baths for ordinary con-sumers. The company exports its products to ten countries and has received recognition from the European Design awards.

Balteco, the largest bath manufacturer in northern Europe and whose several innova-tions have become a standard for others, offers a wider product range. Great design is achieved under the management of the head designer aivar HaBakukk.

neoQi has developed a unique line of sauna and water treatment equipment and exports the products to 56 countries. neoQi products have won two aDEX Platinum awards; the design author is sTEn aDEr.

The designer miHkEl masso has recently won a redDot Design award. The highest award was given to the electric heater Drop, designed for the Estonian company Huum that was nomi-nated for the category of bathrooms and saunas and was recognised for the masterful execution of the design solution.

While the above mentioned baths are made of acrylic material or mass of stone, the new environmentally friendly trend is wooden baths designed by FranTs sEEr and manufactured by a small business khis.

diagnostic equipment designed by TiiT liiv and developed by alEko PEiPsi, helps to assess the health status of muscles, their tone, elasticity and stiffness (the author of the method is arvED vain). at the moment, the equipment is used for the surveys in research institutes all over the word, including in the European space agency. This small, light-weight and ergonomic machin-ery is produced by the company myoton as.

TiiT liiv has among other things also been the creator of a high-tech flowerpot design; the flowerpot that is made to take complete care of your plants. sensors, a microprocessor and spe-cial software contained in the pot take care of the plant (the idea maTTias lEPP). This is a great help for those who wish to grow something in their homes, but are constantly away from homes. The producer is Click & Grow.

chaLLENgE wiTh vEhicLES

already in 1938 saar&Co built a race motor cycle which frame solution helped to win the competi-tion. since 1959, Estonia became the large line manufacturer of formula racing cars, with orders coming all over the soviet union.

in 2010 anDrEas uiBomäE designed a retro-styled motorcycle renard GT which main values are combined by the laconic design character-istic to the nordic countries, modern materials, charismatic v2-engine and engineer-technical intelligence.

in autumn 2012 inDrEk narusk, a designer, engineer and one of the owners of the com-pany velonia Bicycles completed a steel-framed urban bike viks under the Estonian bicycle brand velonia. Classy, yet aggressive, minimalistic and unique. viks is like a caferacer, a version of a motorcycle with pedals. Designboom chose viks to be among the world’s top 10 bicycle designs in 2013.

in 2013, after long development, an electric scooter stigo was completed by the designer maTTi õunaPuu. The scooter folds down to the size of an umbrella, is towable and takes up little space. a vehicle that can be used both as a vehicle and an extension of the journey in public transportations, escalators and elevators. stigo has won several awards.

ExPErimENTS wiTh TExTiLES

Textile designers combine innovative and old legacy, handicraft and high-tech methods. monika JärG is breaking rules and making sim-ple things differently. This is how an embroidered wooden floor, which is a carpet and a floor at the same time, was born. or she combines wool with concrete – a concrete wall and floor cover mate-rial complemented with woollen dots. Plates are water and cold proof, and they improve acoustics indoors. The designer kärT oJavEE has special-ized on the research and development of smart textiles where high tech, modernistic design, soft electronics, textiles and smart solutions meet. For example the source for creating her material (in cooperation with Eszter ozsvald) symbiosis W was the principle of biomimetism. The basis is a plant cell structure. it is an organic display, made for waiting rooms. if you put your hand onto the material the surface beneath begins to grow. The smart textiles by ojavee have received a wide-spread international attention and won design awards.

in 2011 a carpet from as narma won a repu-table design award redDot. The designer kaiDi PloomiPuu considered a novel weaving technol-ogy newWeave®, developed in Estonia. The car-pets are two-sided, natural and made of cotton.

Estonia stands out with its love of innovation and wide use of info technology. internet banking and m-payments (mobile payments, m-parking) are widespread, e-elections, e-tax board, exten-sive iD-card services are well-known. skype and Transferwise have become world-famous.

il Design Estone parla un linguaggio modernista in chiave della tradizione nordica. Si preferisce minimalismo – pochi dettagli, bellezza funzionale ed una naturale impressione d’insieme. il suo trionfo consiste nella forma conservatrice e nell’uso di materiali genuini, che potrebbe essere interpretato anche come consapevolezza ambientale.

L’iNiziO DEL DESigN ESTONE

all’inizio del novecento, il movimento nazionale ha trovato la sua identità oltre nella lingua anche nell’arte e nell’architettura. la base della forma-zione di stile caratteristico estone era la fusione di quello (arcaico) Estone e (moderno) Europeo.

attualmente ci sono numerosi designer qua-lificati. la maggior parte di quelli sono piccoli imprenditori, che producono piccole serie di prodotti. Tutti cercano di organizzare da soli la

produzione e la commercializzazione, trovar-si acquirenti. Certamente, alcuni designer di prodotti Estoni si trovano in uffici ed offrono al produttore servizi di progettazione, altri pochi sono impiegati come designer statutari nelle industrie.

BraNi PriNciPaLi DEL DESigN

i campi principali sono quelli di prodotti di alta tecnologia, prodotti casalinghi, apparecchi d’il-luminazione, mobili, inventario da spa, prodotti tessili, veicoli, moda, e design grafico.

il campo più grande del design Estone è quello dell’industria di mobili. Qua la tradizione fa la sua parte. Così il nome del signor luther, fon-datore dell’industria di pannelli di compensato e di mobili, per gli Estoni ormai da anni vale come sinonimo di mobili.

mOBiLi Di PaNNELLi Di cOmPENSaTO

un esempio curioso del design per i mobili Estoni è marchio Borealis, ideato da Jaanus orGusaar. inizialmente come designer di moda che con i suoi vestiti e calzature fatti a mano ha creato delle leggende, e da un suo copricapo è nata una copertura della lampada. Poi sono nati degli apparecchi di illuminazione e mobili. un suo tema preferito è diventata l’architettura bionica, che cerca delle simili caratteristiche

nella natura e nell’architettura. Jaanus s’inte-ressava delle forme che nello stesso momento formavano di motivi. occupandosi di pannelli di compensato in quali veniva fresata una fantasia, costruisce mobili ed apparecchi di illuminazione che sono facili da montare per l’utente.

orgusaar è stato premiato con tutti i premi per design in Estonia, altresì ha ottenuto riconosci-menti all’estero.

un’altra direzione è quella di mobili di legno riciclato. Tali oggetti sono unici, con superfici interessanti; la finitura originale continua a rac-contare la vita precedente di dettagli.

il marchio Derelict Furniture di Tõnis kalvE ed aHTi GrünBErG produce mobili contempo-ranei minimal dal materiale deprezzato interes-sante.

Di grandi produttori valgono a menzionare le imprese standard e Thulema come i maggiori produttori del design per gli spazi pubblici in tutto il Baltico.

DESigN PEr LE SPa

la cultura Estone di spa ha ormai più di due-cento anni. mantenendo il passo globale sono competitivi al mercato più ampio sia produttori delle vasche che ideatori di capsule energetiche contemporanee. uno di esempi potrebbe essere villi PoGGa con l’impresa aquator – ideatore e produttore leader nel Baltico di vasche terapeu-tiche quale applica delle esperienze sul campo di medicina anche alla produzione delle vasche per consumatori normali. l’impresa esporta la sua produzione in dieci paesi stranieri, è stata premia-ta all’European Design award.

una varietà di prodotti più ampia offre la Balteco, il maggior produttore di vasche quale

ha proposto diverse soluzioni innovative ormai diventate standard per gli altri. il suo design deve al designer dirigente aivar HaBakukk.

la neoQi ha sviluppato una catena unica di capsule per trattamenti di sauna e dell’acqua, esportate in 56 paesi. Diversi prodotti della ne-oQi, progettati da sten ader hanno guadagnato due premi internazionali aDEX Platinum.

il designer miHkEl masso è stato recen-temente laureato con il premio redDot. Ha guadagnato il maggior riconoscimento con il suo riscaldatore elettrico, Drop, progettato per l’impresa Estone Huum, candidato in categoria di bagni e saune, riconosciuto per la virtuosa realiz-zazione del progetto.

le vasche descritte sono di materiale acrilico o di massa di pietra, ma una nuova tendenza propone delle vasche ecocompatibili, prodotti di legno, progettati da Frants seer e realizzati da khis.

aLTa TEcNOLOgia

un designer è certamente importante altresì alla progettazione di attrezzature mediche. Con un attrezzo per la diagnostica di muscoli progettato da TiiT liiv e alEko PEiPsi, impresa myotonPro, uno può valutare la salute di muscoli – tono muscolare, elasticità, rigidità (ideatore del meto-do arvED vain). Quest’ apparecchio oggi si usa per le ricerche in 18 istituti di ricerca nel mondo, tra gli altri anche in agenzia spaziale Europea. il produttore dell’appareccio piccolo, leggero ed ergonomico è myoton as.

TiiT liiv ha tra l’altro progettato anche un vaso ad alta tecnologia – il vaso che fornisce alla pianta tutta la cura necessaria. la pianta verrà custodita dai specifici sensori, microprocessore e la software (idea maTTias lEPP) installati nel

nel 1938, saar & Co ha progettato una bicicletta da corsa, con una favorevole soluzione innovati-va del telaio.

nel 1959, l’Estonia diventò un grande produt-tore di serie di macchine formula, su misura per tutta la unione sovietica.

nel 2010, anDrEs uiBomäE ha costruito una motocicletta di stile retro renard GT – carat-terizzata dalla linea laconica nordica, materiali contemporanei, motore forte v2 ed intelligente ingegneria tecnica.

nel 2012, inDrEk narusk, ingegnere, pro-gettatore e uno di proprietari dell’impresa velonia Bicycles, ha realizzato una citybike chiamata viks con telaio in acciaio, marchio Estone velonia. la bici è ugualmente elegante ed agressiva, minimal ed unica. la viks sembra di essere una versione della moto di tipo caferacer, ma con i pedali. il Designboom ha scelto la viks tra i 10 migliori design per bici del 2013.

maTTi õunaPuu ha costruito nel 2013 uno scooter elettrico chiamato stigo. Quel modello è piegevole come un ombrello, rimorchiabile e portatile, caricabile da qualsiasi presa elettrica, poco voluminoso. un veicolo facile da traspor-tare altresì sui mezzi pubblici, sulle scale mobili e sugli ascensori. lo stigo ha guadagnato diversi premi.

ESPErimENTi cON TESSiLi

i designer tessili intrecciano delle linee innovative con quelle arcaiche, l’artigianato con metodi di

alta tecnologia. monika JärG rompe le regole e cambia modi di fare. Così è nato anche un pavimento ricamato – contemporaneamente tappeto e pavimento. oppure, ha mischiato la lana con del calcestruzzo avendo un materiale di copertura da pareti e pavimenti, decorato con piccole sfere di lana. i pannelli risultano resistenti all’umidità ed al freddo, migliorano l’acustica negli interni.

kärT oJavEE si è specializzata sulla ricerca e sviluppo di prodotti tessili intelligenti. s’incontra-no high tech, design moderno, elettronica soft, tessili e soluzioni intelligenti. Per esempio, ha progettato (con EszTEr ozsvalD) un materiale symbiosis W, applicando principi di biomimetica e partendo dalla struttura di una cellula vegetale. si tratta di uno schermo organico, progettato per le sale d’attesa. mettendo la mano sul tappeto, la superficie sotto la mano inizia a crescere. i suoi tessili intelligenti hanno guadagnato riconosci-menti internazionali e premi di design.

un tappeto dell’impresa narma, progettato da kaiDi PloomPuu, è stato premiato nel 2011 con il rispettabile premio redDot. l’artista ha applica-to una nuova tecnologia di tessitura newWeave® elaborato in Estonia. Entrambi i lati di tappeti sono presentabili, i tappeti sono naturali, prodotti in cotone.

Entrepreneur Urmas sõõrUmaa (53) is the man behind rotermann city in the heart of Tallinn. in 2004 he started his efforts to create a new living environment, one that is created with heart.

The range of businesses that urmas sõõrumaa engages in is wide – in the 1990s he started with the security company Ess

Group, and now his activities range from real estate to charity.

according to sõõrumaa, who is main-ly active in the Baltic states, russia and ukraine, there are two places he consid-ers sacred in the world: the childhood home, where he was born, in the kohila parrish near Tallinn, and rotermanni City. “These are the places where i want to make my mark in this life,” muses the entrepreneur. “i’m not sure what the motor is that drives me, but i have this huge desire to create something that lasts longer than i do.”

The first time he happened to wander into the rotermanni quarter, sõõrumaa was 17 years old. at that time, his brother worked at a food service machinery fac-tory mehis that was located there. urmas worked there on the side, as a sports and training methodology specialist.

a few decades later, urmas sõõrumaa became the owner of the rotermanni City in Tallinn, who took the reconstruc-tion of this dilapidated urban space as his personal quest. “of course, develop-ing this quarter is a big challenge, but i thrive on difficulties,” he admits. “Each new building that i construct adds value to the existing ones. There is plenty of room for development in this area!”

be the most important thing. “i have had intense discussions with the architects over each building in the quarter, so there is a lot of my will in here. making money is secondary, but at the end of the day, the business does have to be in the green.”

When it comes to the architecture, he values objects that are interesting, have plenty of space and are practical; at the same time, he points out that everything that is ingenius and attractive is actually simple – it’s just a matter of finding the right angle.

as a developer, his goal is to bring life to rotermanni in the daytime as well as at night. “When selling or renting apart-ments, instead of focusing on the price, it’s more important to emphasize the

surrounding environment – where you want to come and stay,” says sõõrumaa, who also lives in rotermanni and whose investment company u.s. invest is also located in the quarter. His sons Tõnis and ander also work for the quarter.

The entrepreneur, who is interested in Eastern philosophies, says that the quar-ter has to possess a healthy spirit, first and foremost referring to its geobiology. “Before building, i map the underground energy and neutralize the influence of water veins, because the static elec-tromagnetic fields they create have a negative effect on people’s health and everyday wellbeing,” he explains.

the historical old Town in Tallinn – the new Town. “Whatever city you visit, the old town is always a part you want to see,” he explains. “But i would like it if a new part of town also became as important on the map of Tallinn. one that would beacon you to visit because of it’s remarkable architecture and living environment. Considering the capacity and opportunities rotermanni presents, it will make a great new city.”

ThE rOTErmaNNi quarTEr

History

The rotermanni quarter is a historical industrial part of Tallinn, whose story began 186 years ago. The main role in developing the industrial quarter was played by the company rotermanni Factories, founded by Christian abraham rotermann. There was also a number of other successful companies and facto-ries in the quarter.

at the beginning of the 20th century, the rotermanns’ undertaking developed with great speed. among other struc-tures, that’s when the high chimney that is the beacon for rotermanni City was built. other structures completed at that time were a grain elevator, a wheat mill and a groat mill. in 1908 the salt storage was completed, and to this day it is one of the most unique limestone buildings in Estonia.

The time of war and confusion in

firms in Estonia to renovate the roter-mann Flour storage, Barley mill, lum-ber Workshop and sample mill. a new four-section building complex has been completed, and the new Flour storage has been joined with the old Flour stor-age through the atrium. The rotermann and rosen streets have been named and the rotermann square has become the heart of the quarter.

There are many shops, cafes, beauty salons, dance and fashion studios, providers of postal and other types of services, as well as the offices of re-nowned marketing companies, advertis-ing companies and law offices that are now located in the quarter.

FuturE

in the next stage of development, 22 500 square meters of residential and commercial spaces will be constructed in the rotermanni quarter.

The old grain elevator and gate building located on Hobujaama street will become a building with a modern interior that will have entertainment and commercial functions. The new building will be home to several restaurants, as well as dance and aerobics studios. The first floor will house commercial and business spaces, and the upper floors will have offices with interesting con-cepts. The construction is expected to be completed by January 2016.

1918-1920 didn’t leave the rotermanni quarter untouched. several buildings that were abandonned were demolished, but the quarter as a whole weathered all the storms.

soviet occupation brought a new wave of restructuring. Private enterprises were nationalized; historic buildings were left to ruin and new buildings that were ill-suited for their surroundings were built.

The changes that the soviet time brought to the quarter are also part of the world cultural heritage now: a great part of andrey Tarkovsky’s film “stalker”, which belongs among the classics of world cinema, was filmed in the desolate industrial zone.

after Estonia regained independence in 1991, the restoration of the buildings was initially considered impossible. in 2001, the rotermanni quarter was given the status of an area of cultural and environmental value, where the herit-age conservation specialists had a vision about old industrial buildings being compound with high quality modern architecture. in 2004 construction ac-tivities were launched.

Qualche decade più tardi, urmas sõõrumaa diventò proprietario della rotermanni City in Tallinn, la cui mis-sione era la ricostruzione dell’omonimo e fatiscente spazio urbano. “Certo lo sviluppo di questo quartiere è una bella sfida, ma le difficoltà mi motivano”, am-mette sõõrumaa “Ciascun nuovo edificio che costruisco aggiunge valore agli altri e c’è molto spazio per lo sviluppo di quest’area!”

Qualsiasi cosa faccia, sõõrumaa vi si applica con entusiasmo e le dedica tutto sé stesso. “Per ogni edificio del quartie-re, ho avuto intense discussioni con gli architetti, e posso dire che nel risultato finale c’è molto della mia volontà. il profitto è per me un aspetto secondario, anche se ovviamente è necessario che i conti siano in attivo”.

Per quanto riguarda l’architettura, sõõrumaa dà valore a manufatti che siano interessanti, spaziosi e pratici, e contemporaneamente sottolinea che qualsiasi cosa che abbia ingegno e att-rattiva è giocoforza semplice – si tratta solo di trovare la prospettiva giusta.

l’eredità sovietica, tuttavia, è oggi patrimonio culturale dell’umanità: buna parte del film stalker di a. Tarkovsky, uno dei classici della filmografia mondiale, è girato nella desolazione industriale di questo quartiere.

il quartiere si è sviluppato in uno spazio urbano dall’architettura unica e dal ritmo di vita attivo. la rotermann City oü ha lavorato in tandem con i migliori studi architettonici d’Estonia per rinnovare il deposito della farina, il mulino dell’orzo e la falegnameria. un nuovo comp-lesso di quattro edifici è stato inoltre completato ed il nuovo silo della farina è stato connesso al vecchio attraverso un atrio. sono state inoltre create le vie rotermann e rosen, così come la piazza rotermann, che è così diventata il cuore del quartiere, che oggi ospita molti negozi, caffè, saloni di bellezza, atelier di danza e di moda, rinomate agenzie di marketing, compagnie pubblicitarie, servizi postali e uffici legali.

il Futuro

il prossimo passo nello sviluppo del quartiere sarà la realizzazione di 22500 metri quadrati di edilizia residenziale e commerciale.

il vecchio deposito per il grano e la porta del quartiere sulla via Hobu-jaama diventeranno un nuovo edificio dagli interni moderni con funzioni d’intrattenimento e commerciali: vi troveranno posto ristoranti, palestre e fitness club. il primo piano ospiterà spazi commerciali mentre quelli superiori saranno adibiti a un nuovo e interessante conetto d’ufficio. la conclusione dei lavori è programmata per gennaio 2016.

AnAstAssiA KovAlenKo (23), the best female motorcycle athlete of the year in Estonia, is one of the new generation of female racers in Northern European road racing history to race at international level.

Estonian national sports include basket-ball, football, skiing, athletics and cy-cling, however, motor-sports have long traditions, as well. estonian women have

ridden on the race track before.Anastassia was chosen to race in the pres-

tigious european Junior Cup, the eight rounds of which on various european tracks are held as part of the World superbike championship series. As from this year, the competition incorporates a separate Women’s european Cup where 10 women from across the world are selected to race; Anastassia Kovalenko is to represent north-ern europe.

Anastassia was born in tallinn, estonia. she is the oldest of five children, having two younger brothers and one younger sister. outside of mo-torcycle racing Anastassia is a gifted piano player – she studied in nõmme Music school. she has also done ballroom dancing for ten years.

Anastassia rides under one of Finland’s most famous road racing teams Kallio Racing, the name of which is known thanks to Mika Kallio, a Grand Prix Moto2 title contender as well as one of the managers of the team. last season, Anas-tassia won the superstock 600 B class champi-onship in estonia.

in the month of May Anastassia will receive her master’s degree in the Faculty of law, after which she will focus fully on her training and driving. summer competition schedule is intense, with races almost on every weekend and be-tween these independent training in order to test new driving techniques. there is no free time be-cause it is also important to maintain the physical form going to the gym.

the media likes to refer to Anastassia as a beauty on a bike or a motorcycle princess but the young woman prefers to be called just Anas-tassia.

“i wish to achieve a good result in the interna-

tional arena. in the first race i finished second in women’s ranking, and i will try to continue along the same line, to evolve, to increase the speed even more and to compete for the first position. i hope to be driving at the international level also the next year,” says Anastassia, who takes as a model MotoGP racer Jorge lorenzo, compet-ing herself with his bike number 99, as well. “His career is full of difficult moments but always he has been able to overcome these and keep on fighting. Racing is a rather mental sport, it’s very important to be able to control one’s emotions.”

there is just one race track in estonia, and that one relatively short, besides. “Yet in the summer-time i train mostly in estonia because it is very expensive to go abroad for training. i go abroad for training, for example, before the start of the season, this year i trained in spain in February and March.”

What’s great about estonia is that “i am sur-rounded by my friends and family. very many people support me and this support is very important to me.”

di continuare in maniera simile, di svilupparmi, di aumentare la velocità ancora più e di competere per la prima posizione. spero di essere correndo a livello internazionale anche l’anno prossimo,” dice Anastassia, chi segue l’esempio del pilota di MotoGP Jorge lorenzo, e anche lei gareggia col stesso numero 99. “la sua carriera è piena di momenti difficili ma sempre è stato in grado di superarli e di continuare a lottare. la corsa è uno sport piuttosto mentale, è molto importante es-sere in grado di controllare le proprie emozioni.”

C’è solo un circuito per correre in estonia, e quello inoltre relativamente corto. “nonos-tante in estate mi alleno soprattutto in estonia perché è molto costoso andare all’estero per l’allenamento. vado all’estero per l’allenamento, per esempio, prima dell’inizio della stagione, quest’anno mi sono allenata in spagna nei mesi di febbraio e marzo.”

the ebavere sacred grove hill stands next to the Rakvere–tartu road. the value and vulnerability of life in the grove is underlined by the pan-european natura protection it enjoys. Accord-ing to President lennart Meri, who was also a celebrated ethnographer, it was from here that the ancient god tharapita set out to Kaali; similar traces are described in the livonian Chronicle of Henry (Heinrici Cronicon lyvoniae).

A natural phenomenon, awarded the title of the estonian miracle, is located in the tuhala land-scape protection area in the County of Harjumaa. the witch’s well starts boiling over when the witches of tuhala whisk in the well. this fantastic natural phenomenon is fed by a subterranean river starting 1.5 km away from the well, where the tuhala River disappears into a funnel shaped karstic sinkhole called the Midwife Hole. the name is supported by a folk legend of a groggy midwife, who drowned in the hole.

ing to some sources) years ago. Although the exact age of the crater is not established, it’s the youngest large meteorite crater in europe.

la collina di ebavere ed il boschetto che la occupa si trovano accanto alla strada Rakevere-tartu. il valore e la vulnerabilità della biodiversità ospitata dal boschetto sono sottolineati dalla protezione ambientale paneuropea natura che gli è stata riconosciuta. secondo il Presidente lennart Meri, già rinomato etnografo, l’antico dio tharapita sarebbe partito proprio da questo luogo per raggiungere Kaali; cosi come indiche-rebbero anche le Cronache di enrico di lavonia (Heinrici Cronicon lyvoniae).

il pozzo dEllA sTrEgA di TuhAlA.

Un particolare fenomeno naturale, guadagnatosi il titolo di Miracolo estone, si verifica nell’area a tutela ambientale della campagna di tuhula, nella Contea di Harjumaa. si dice che l’acqua del pozzo cominci a bollire quando le streghe di tuhala vi si lanciano dentro , ma questo fantas-tico fenomeno naturale è in verità causato da un corso d’acqua sotterraneo che sgorga a circa 1,5 km dal pozzo, dove il fiume tuhala scompare in una gola carsica a forma d’imbuto conosciuta come il Buco della levatrice, secondo il folklore locale perché una levatrice barcollante che ci sarebbe caduta dentro.

A 20 km da Kuressaare, capitale di saaremaa, la più grande isola estone, è possibile osservare le tracce di un incidente cosmico: si tratta d’un cratere meteoritico databile intorno a 2500 anni fa (o 7500 secondo altre fonti). sebbene l’età del cratere non sia stata stabilita con esattezza, si pensa che quello di Kaali sia il più recente cratere meteoritico di larghe dimensioni in europa. nel suo libro Hõbevalge (in italiano Bianco Argen-to), lennart Meri ha esaminato le relazioni tra l’esplosione di Kaali con fonti mitologiche come la caduta di Fetonte figlio d’Apollo, l’arrivo di thor, l’antico dio scandivano del tuono orientale ed i manoscritti dell’esploratore Pitea.

il pittoresco affioramento sabbioso di suur-tae-vaskoda, vicino Põlva, si eleva 22 metri sopra il livello del fiume. la leggenda vuole che vana-pagan, leggendario gigante del folklore estone, fosse così incantato dalla bellezza del posto che costruì un certo numero di deliziosi ambienti sotterranei cui attribuì il nome de le stanze del Paradiso.

le sorgenti d’acqua sono ancora largamente riverite in estonia: la gente visita queste fonti per prendere dell’acqua che sia vitale e per comu-nicare con gli spiriti e gli elementali dell’acqua.

il cosiddetto scivolo di Roccia di Massu si trova oggi a ridosso del lato settentrionale della strada Massu-Mõisaküla, nel villaggio di Kojuta, dioce-si di Hanila. Precisamente, questa formazione rocciosa è situata tra il massicciato dalla stra-da ed il canale che corre intorno ad essa, e si caratterizza per tre scivoli naturali che in passato erano usati in rituali propiziatori: si credeva infatti che scivolando su questi piani inclinati con le ter-ga nude, le donne si garantissero il matrimonio e migliorassero la propria fertilità.

recognition – food. Indeed, it was in the competitiveness study for food culture that FutureBrand placed Estonia in 14th place among 118 nations.

According to Restaurant Magazine, food tourism is a growing trend. Tall, blonde and with a clear complexion: the classical northern type you would say bum-ping into her in the streets of Tallinn, where she lives since the 1990s. Once beyond the safety distance however, she would be betrayed by her

own eyes, which are not exactly blue. Looking at them you wouldn’t see the Baltic Sea, but in facts the rich and sun-blackened soil of Campania. Daughter of a Finnish mother and a Neapolitan father, Elena Natale is the astonishing outcome of Northern Europe meeting Southern Europe, an explosive and unknown blend of Italian creativity and Scandi-navian efficiency. About Estonia she loves simplicity, ef-ficiency, the quality of public education and the character of its people: “they are shy at the beginning, but as soon as they open up they reveal very profound worlds that need but to be discovered. Their flaws? Sometimes Estonians are maybe too formal and rigid and there’s a certain gender inequality here when it comes to developing one’s career”.

For years, her name has been associated in Estonia to the organization of the most relevant cultural events, from the annual Tallinn Music Week to Tallinn European Capital of Culture 2011. Her last challenge is anyway reaching far beyond, and it started in Italy, where from May 1st she went on air as Director of Gallery Estonia, the Estonian pavilion at the Universal Exposition of Milan EXPO 2015. The preparation of this international showcase took two years of strenuous commitment but the results are finally and successfully being reaped: Gallery Estonia has indeed been considered by many international media as one of the most interesting and better realized pavilions of the entire exposition. And for a 1.3-mil-lion-citizens country, the only of Northern Europe taking part into the big Milanese event, this is not at all small thing.

Per anni, in Estonia, il suo nome è stato associato all’or-ganizzazione degli eventi culturali più rilevanti – dall’annuale Tallinn Music Week a Tallinn Capitale Europea della Cultura, nel 2011. La sua ultima impresa, tuttavia, sta andando ben oltre, e si svolge dal 1° maggio in Italia nelle vesti di direttore di Gallery of Estonia, il padiglione estone a Expo Milano 2015. BArT WESTErHOUT came to Swissôtel Tallinn from Swissôtel Amsterdam. Of his twenty-five years of experience in hotel management, fourteen have been spent at the service of Swissôtel. Bart finds work in Tallinn to be an interesting challenge and thinks Estonia is one of the best-kept secrets of Northern Europe.

T he thirty-five year old hotel chain founded by Nestlé and Swissair oper-ates on six continents and twenty-six countries. Next to such established hotels as the Savoy London, the

Plaza New York and the Fairmont Monte Carlo, Swissôtel Tallinn is a newcomer but the hotel has already received much acclaim.

“World Travel Association Award 2010, Condé Nast Traveler – Gold List 2012, World Luxury Hotel Awards 2013, Condé Nast Traveler – read-ers’ Choice List 2013”, Bart Westerhout, General Manager of Swissôtel Tallinn, lists the distinctions received over the years. “Being recognised in this way confirms our company slogan, a passion for perfection, which is based on our warm Swiss hospitality combined with quality, efficiency and reliability”.

Working in Tallinn is an exciting and satisfy-ing challenge for Bart Westerhout. “Estonia is a wonderful country,” Bart says. “I felt at home here from the first day that I arrived.”

Bart praises the efficiency in Estonia. Get-ting bank and ID cards took but mere moments. And it didn’t take long to find a lovely and cosy apartment in Tallinn’s Old Town to share with his wife, Brigit, an active Member of the Board of the International Women’s Club of Tallinn. Both have found a myriad of friends here and are active on the social scene. Their 24 year-old university student son also visits them in Tallinn often.

Bart Westerhout: “It is easy to blend into society in Estonia. People are open and friendly and most of them speak English, which makes interactions especially effortless. There are a lot of great things to highlight about Estonia. The efficiency and ease of doing business, the lack of bureaucracy, the cleanliness, safety and open-ness of the society are of great value. And yet, I see that very little is done for the pensioners here. Their security and welfare should be a much big-ger priority for the state.”

“Estonia is a big secret; a true pearl of North-ern Europe that the world just has to discover,” Bart Westerhout sighs enthusiastically. “read the TripAdvisor recommendations and come visit us,” he suggests. “See you soon in Tallinn!”

Entrambi hanno stretto subito molte amicizie e sono attivi sulla scena sociale, e spesso fa loro visita il figlio universitario ventiquattrenne.

“In Estonia è semplice integrarsi. La gente è aperta e cordiale e la maggior parte parla inglese, il che facilita non poco l’interazione. La sempli-cità e l’efficienza delle infrastrutture commer-ciali aiutano molto l’apertura di un’attività, la mancanza di burocrazia, la pulizia, la sicurezza e l’apertura della società sono anch’esse di gran valore. Eppure vedo che per i pensionati si fa molto poco qui: la loro sicurezza e un supporto sociale adeguato dovrebbero invece essere una priorità del paese”.

Mary jordan, award winning filmmaker, art-ist, activist and social justice advocate based in New York City is married to Estonian politician Eerik-Niiles Kross. Together, the couple is devel-oping their Kau Manor in the Estonian country-side. Mary has also created The Kau Academy with the goal of supporting established and emerging artists working in a variety of media.

Cycling carefree in the summer nights with my wife on Estonian roads and pavements (which is not against the law if you take due care), through forests and along the coastline. And, of course, the new independ-ent pubs and breweries that have brought better tastes to the Estonian beer market – my favourite being the beer called ‘Virmalised’.”

“Estonia is indeed small, with few people. Which brings many benefits. It’s so easy to make contacts, if you need a personal phone number of a professional person, someone you haven’t yet met, it’s unlikely you would have to make more than one call to a friend to get that number. The main streets in Tallinn are really only busy for about 2 hours a day and then they are empty and quiet. To visit nature and feel a part of it you need only travel a few kilometres to find deep forest or deserted coastline.”

“I recommend most that you go swimming in the pleasantly warm, calm and shallow Baltic Sea during the summer. And for culture, to visit the Museum of Occupation and Kumu.”

Chris reckons that “the budget airlines, ‘eu-rofication’ and ‘natoism’” have probably been the most significant changes since his first visit to Estonia 16 years ago.

chris long, alias The rhythm Doctor, leggen-dario dj inglese, è sposato con l’artista e designer Anu Samarüütel e, per questo motivo, passa molto tempo in Estonia.

“Quello che più mi è piaciuto è stato lavorare con persone che hanno la mia stessa mentalità alla creazione di eventi, grandi e piccoli, nei quali posso suonare vecchia e nuova musica per un pubblico ricettivo; andarmene in bici senza paura nelle notti estive con mi moglie per le strade estoni e addirittura sui marciapiedi (che non è illegale se fatto con la dovuta attenzione), per le foreste e sulla costa. E, ovviamente, i nuovi pub indipendenti e le birrerie che hanno introdotto nuovi gusti sul mercato estone – la mia preferita è senza dubbio la ‘Virmalised’.

“L’Estonia è piccola, ha pochi abitanti. Questo porta con sé molti vantaggi: è facile creare nuovi contatti e se hai bisogno del numero di qualche professionista che non hai ancora incontrato, di solito non ti ci vuole più di una telefonata per riuscire a ottenerlo tramite un amico. Le strade principali di Tallinn sono trafficate seriamente per sole due ore al giorno, per il resto sono calme e tranquille. Per immergerti nella natura e sentirti veramente parte di essa, ti basta viaggiare per pochi kilometri per ritrovarti nel fitto della foresta o su una spiaggia deserta”.

Chris crede che le “compagnie low cost”, l’entrata in Unione Europea e nella NATO siano stati, probabilmente, i cambiamenti più grandi cui ha assistito a partire dalla sua prima visita sedici anni fa.

Petri Nikkilä from Finland has been the head of Nordea Estonia since 2014. Before that he was responsible for coordinating the sales, marketing and customer support areas at Nordea Group. “Estonia is a very interesting and important country for Nordea Group and i consider my role here to be an immensely exciting challenge,” says Petri.

Nordea is the largest financial group in the Nordic countries, which operates as an advising bank with a broad-rang-ing service and product portfolio for both private and business customers in Estonia. In addition, Nordea has secured a strong position in the Estonian market as a leasing company and pension fund manager. This year, Nordea will celebrate 20 years on the Estonian banking market. On the local market, the branch of the largest Nordic financial group has paid particular at-tention to stable growth and establishing and maintaining excellent customer relations. In 2013, this approach was also acknowledged by The Banker, world’s lead-ing banking and financial publication, by naming Nordea the best bank in Estonia.

Petri, who has received a degree in economics from the Erasmus University rotterdam, has previously held the po-sition as Global Head of Customer Stra-

tegy and Segments at HSBC Bank. His working experience also includes positions as Business Unit Director at Mars Inc. and Business Director at Unilever AMET.

In Petri’s opinion, Estonia’s business climate can serve as an example for many European countries: “The local business environment and financial policies promote entrepreneurship and create a favourable business climate for compa-nies operating here. Estonian companies have made good use of it.” However, he admits that Estonia, due to its small size, is highly dependent on what is happening elsewhere in the world, and the economic difficulties and shrinking export opportunities in Europe force local companies to make a great effort.

In the light of great international experience, Petri highlights Estonia’s continued strong com-mitment to grow and develop both as a state and on corporate level. “Twenty years of rapid devel-opment has not lessened the desire of Estonians to write down their own success story. I see that kind of energy and desire to develop and expand

every day when meeting customers at the bank,” says Petri. “Such a drive could serve as a model for all of our northern neighbours.”

Estonia has established itself as a successful information society. When looking ahead, Petri finds it necessary for Estonia to make significantly greater investment in education, information technology and areas which bring great added value. Alongside traditional industries, the devel-opment of IT area has demonstrated its vitality, whereas the engagement of talented people and more aggressive investments would significantly contribute to a better capitalisation of this field.

In addition to financing activities, Nordea con-siders it important to support the local culture. According to Petri Nikkilä, this is due to a desire to be part of society. “Culture is the foundation of every society and our goal is to contribute to the sustainable development of Estonia by sup-porting cultural events. We support Pärt’s Days, a music festival dedicated to Arvo Pärt, PÖFF (Black Nights Film Festival), one of the world’s top 15 film festivals, and Tallinn Music Week. TMW, which was chosen among the ten most impor-tant winter festivals by The Guardian, is particu-larly close to the heart of Petri who is a former symphonist and rock musician.

In fondo alla grande esperienza internaziona-le, Petri sottolinea la forte voglia Estone di cre-scere e svilupparsi sia come nazione che al livello imprenditoriale. “Venti anni di sviluppi turbolenti non hanno cancellato la sete degli Estoni di co-struire una propria storia di successo. Ogni gior-no quando incontro dei clienti alla banca vedo questa energia e la voglia di crescere e allargarsi,” dice Petri. “Questo tipo di “drive” potrebbe essere come modello per tutti i nostri vicini nordici.”

L’Estonia si è fatta valere come una efficace società informatica. Per il futuro Petri considera importanti investimenti notevolmente più grandi nell’istruzione pubblica, nelle infotecnologie e nelle aree che producono grande valore aggiun-tivo. Oltre i settori di economia tradizionali, lo sviluppo delle infotecnologie ha già dimostrato la sua vitalità, e coinvolgere delle persone dotate più investirci più decisamente aiuterebbero signi-ficativamente a capitalizzare meglio questa area.

Oltre la sua attività finanziaria, la banca Nor-dea considera molto importante il sostegno della cultura locale. Petri Nikkilä dice che questo si fa per il desiderio di far parte della società.

“La cultura è la base di qualsiasi socità, e il nostro obbiettivo è quello di dare il nostro contributo allo sviluppo sostenibile dell’Estonia con sostegno di eventi culturali. Promuoviamo il festival musicale Pärdi Päevad dedicato al Mae-stro Arvo Pärt, il festival cinemaatografico PÖFF (Black Night Film Festival) appartenente nel TOP 15 nel mondo, ed il festival Tallinn Music Week. Il festival TMW, valutato dalla rivista The Guardian come uno di festival più importanti in stagione invernale, per Petri come un ex-musicista sinfo-nico e musicista di rock band sta particolarmente a cuore.

erik Sakkov, member of the management board at Tallinn Airport, doesn’t live far from the airport – he could easily bike or walk to work and on occasion he does so.

Erik is known as a man, who showed re-markable decisiveness and vigour when the port of Tallinn had to be readied for cruise ships. Now he and his marke-

ting team are expected to work hard to allow all airplanes land at the Tallinn Airport.

The general public, however, knows Erik more as the keyboard player for the popular band Pan-tokraator. In the beginning of the 80s, Erik’s first band was a punk band called Propaan, however, Panto is more progressive rock with hints of folk music. Panto also has somewhat of a world famous hit in “Metsavaht”. The band has fans all over the world, even though the sheer numbers may not be staggering. Erik taught himself to play with the toy synthesizer Pille that he earned himself by working on the fields of a collective farm in Soviet times. Later he constantly had to change synthesizers, because in those times the instruments didn’t stay tuned and you never knew what sound they would make once you press a button, if any.

Years later, Erik started to collect old russian synthesizers. By now he has quite a number of them, however, most of them won’t make a sound. “I have to find a guy to breathe life back into them,” says Erik.

Whenever he gets a moment away from the busy pace of work and family life, Erik jumps into his studio at home, where in addition to the vintage instruments he has new keyboards in fine working order and a mixing board for recording. When you listen to Erik’s songs, you might feel that it’s a shame that he doesn’t want to play his wonderful improvised synthesizer pieces at the airport. In all other ways, however, the Tallinn Airport has made a lot of effort to become a truly cosy and comfortable place for when you’re waiting for a plane. It is one of the reasons why you should fly to Estonia and, more precisely, to Tallinn, most definitely!

In recent years, the transformation of Tallinn Airport into a cosy airport has been particularly noticeable. The different needs of passengers have been more clearly catered to in order to offer everyone a chance to spend their waiting time as pleasantly as possible.

Exciting discovEriEs in thE passEngEr arEa:

the library at tallinn airport Passengers can choose a book from the bookshelf to pass the time while waiting for their flight. You can also take the book along on a trip and return it when you come back. If you have not managed to

finish reading the book during the trip, you may take it home and return it next time.

The library is entirely self-service and open 24 hours.

enterprise estonia’s introduction to estonia. One of the passengers’ favourite gates is Gate 5 because an introduction to Estonia is incorpora-ted into the waiting area. A large selection of print material in different languages is available on the shelves and clips about Estonia are played on the big screens to show events and exhibitions that are taking place in Estonia. Chairs are decorated with national patterns, the bridge from the gate to the airplane is designed as a walk-through in the woods and fabric banners hang from the cei-ling to create a pleasant mood. In a separate area, the business lounge has comfortable armchairs in Estonian design for business travellers.

To connect the traveller with the airport, a wall made of aspen boards is placed next to the cor-ner so business travellers can leave their business cards and thereby exchange contacts.

Children’s playground. The second part of Gate 5 is dedicated to the Estonian children’s favourite Lotte from Gadgetville. The wall of the waiting area is decorated in Lotte theme, a high three-storey children’s playhouse is situated in the middle of the waiting area with a screen mounted on the wall for playing Lotte animated films; th-ree tables and 12 chairs in the Lotte area provide Lotte colouring paper and crayons.

In addition to children’s entertainment, Lotte Village helps children relieve any travel anxiety and make passing the time more fun. Seating places decorated with Estonian national patterns next to the Lotte area offer parents the opportu-nity to keep an eye on their children in the play area.

Non-Schengen children’s area. There is also a play area for children in the non-Schengen zone. As many charter flights pass through the non-Sc-hengen area of the airport, this is where families wait for board their flights. Again, the play area helps children relieve any travel anxiety and ma-kes passing the time more fun.

Boudoir-themed women’s restrooms. All women’s restrooms in the airport have been revamped – cubicles and mirrors are designed in a boudoir theme. A visit to the lavatory may pro-vide a pleasant surprise and influence the entire airport experience. Each cubicle is dedicated to a clothing item/accessory. The mirror and the door carry a flattering message, and the overall messa-ge embodies a glorification of femininity.

Sports-themed men’s restrooms. In order to maintain balance, men’s restrooms have also received a completely new look.

Instructions on how to tie a tie are placed on the mirrors, and humorous sports facts can be found around the whole toilet room.

For example, did you know that fencing is the only combat sport that has no weight classes?

And really, there’s a lot more at the airport...

Erik ha mostrato fermezza e decisione nel momento in cui il porto di Tallinn ha do-vuto prepararsi per accogliere le navi da crociera. Ora ci si aspetta un gran lavoro

da lui e dal suo team di marketing per preparare l’accoglienza aeroportuale di Tallinn.

Il pubblico, tuttavia, conosce Erik soprattutto come tastierista del famoso gruppo Pantokra-ator. All’inizio degli anni ’80, Erik suonava con il gruppo punk Propaan, ma i Panto hanno uno stile più progressive rock con tinte folk ed hanno raggiunto una certa notorietà internazionale con il singolo “Metsavaht”. Anche se il loro numero totale non è forse sbalorditivo, la band vanta comunque fan in tutto il mondo. Erik ha imparato la musica da autodidatta con il sintetizzatore gio-cattolo Pille, guadagnato lavorando sui campi di una fattoria collettiva all’epoca dell’Unione Sovie-tica, ma in quel periodo era costretto a sostituire il sintetizzatore spesso, perché gli strumenti non rimanevano accordati ed era impossibile preve-dere che suono avrebbero prodotto, ammesso che funzionassero.

Anni dopo, Erik ha cominciato a collezionare vecchi sintetizzatori russi e oggi ne possiede molti, anche se la maggior parte non può emet-tere una nota. “Dovrei trovare qualcuno capace d instillarci nuova vita”, dice Erik.

Appena ha un po’ di tempo per staccare dal ritmo frenetico del lavoro e dalla famiglia, Erik si fionda nel suo studio privato, dove oltre agli strumenti vintage ha ora a disposizione tastie-re moderne e funzionanti ed un mixer per la registrazione. Ascoltando le sue canzoni viene da pensare che sia un peccato non voglia improvvi-sare con il suo sintetizzatore anche all’aeroporto. Per tutto il resto però, l’Aeroporto di Tallinn ha fatto molti sforzi per trasformarsi in un posto piacevole e accogliente per i viaggiatori in attesa d’imbarco, e questa è un’altra buona ragione per volare in Estonia, e più precisamente a Tallinn!

Negli ultimi anni la trasformazione dell’ae-roporto di Tallinn è stata notevole, ed oggi è un luogo molto più confortevole, attento ai diffe-renti bisogni dei passeggeri e pensato per dare ad ognuno l’opportunità di passare piacevolmente l’attesa del proprio volo.

Nell’area d’attesa è disponibile una vasta selezione di materiale cartaceo in varie lingue ed i maxischermi proiettano video informativi sull’Estonia, compresi gli eventi e le mostre in corso. Le sedute del gate 5 sono inol-tre decorate con i motivi tradizionali del nostro Paese ed il ponte verso l’aeronave è progettato per riprodurre un sentiero nel bosco, dal cui sof-fitto pendono tessuti tipici estoni. L’area business ospita invece un lounge con comode poltrone, anche queste progettate secondo i motivi tradi-zionali.

Per facilitare l’interazione dei passeggeri, è anche stata installata una bacheca in legno di pioppo dove i viaggiatori possono lasciare i pro-pri biglietti da visita e prendere quelli altrui.

il parco giochi per bambini. Un’area del gate 5 ospita un parco giochi per i più piccoli, nello stile dell’amato personaggio Lotte della serie Gad-getville. I muri sono decorati col tema di Lotte e su uno schermo sono proiettati i cartoni della serie, mentre al centro dell’area c’è una casetta per bambini a tre piani, tre tavoli e dodici sedie. A disposizione dei bambini ci sono inoltre album da colorare di Lotte e colori a volontà. Oltre all’in-trattenimento, lo scopo del Lotte Village è quello di aiutare i bimbi a smaltire l’ansia e lo stress del viaggio, senza dimenticare la sicurezza: adiacen-te all’area gioco, infatti, sono sistemate poltrone decorate con i motivi tradizionali estoni da dove i genitori possono controllare comodamente i propri figli.

Bagni per uomini in stile sportivo. Per equità, anche i bagni degli uomini sono stati rinnovati ed hanno ora un look tutto nuovo: gli specchi di-spensano consigli su come annodare la cravatta e simpatici aneddoti sportivi sono sparpagliati per tutto il bagno.

Lately the Estonian film industry, so far valued internationally in the field of animated films, has also started to attract more international attention and recognition in the form of feature films.

Just to mention a few of the great moments…

Young director MArTTI HELDE has won inter-national acclaim with his debut film “IN THE CrOSSWIND” (2013), which just recently took the Best Director Award at Beiing 5th International Film Festival.

The greatest success so far, the nominee for Oscars 2015 Foreign Language Film and Golden Globe Award along many others the Estonian-Georgian Co-Production “TANGErINES” has had a remarkable success on international festivals. And this anti-war drama is about to hit regular cinema screens in Europe.

“SPrING”, the horror-romance movie pro-duced by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson has gained popularity especially in the US market. Visual effects of the movie were produced in Estonia by FrostFX. Movie is about young man in a personal tailspin who flees the US to Italy, where he sparks up a romance with a girl hiding a dark secret.

FiLm iNduSTry ON ThE riSE

Among many of the really good new docu-mentaries already a big rave is a film by Vladimir Loginov and Max Golomidov “ANTHILL”, a portrait of a giant garage located in the largest Soviet blockhouse area of Tallinn.

In 2007 “AUTUMN BALL” (Sügisball) by director VEIKO ÕUNPUU won the Horizon (Orizzonti) Award at the Venice Film Festival, which was the first big international recognition an Estonian film had received.

The acclaimed director has completed his new film “rOUKLI”

vEikO ÕUnPUU: “Even I don’t know precisely what this film (roukli) is exactly about. Certainly it introduces the themes of love and war and the fact that in reality none of us knows what the hell is it that we fuss over every day. That it’s a secret, a mystery.”

Speaking of his homeland: “For me there’s enough space, fresh air and tranquillity here. I enjoy the changing of the seasons, as well, especially the moment when the short summer begins and everything is in bloom. To me such an explosive joy for life seems possible only after a long and tedious winter, in contrast. And I also like autumn because it won’t let us forget death. I like that Estonians in general are not hysterics. One could fantasise that as a result of a short, concentrated effort of a few hundred years per-haps we could achieve becoming an ecologically clean, Zen-Buddhist nation where every person has the maximum opportunities for a spiritual growth and a happy, complete life. In short, Esto-nia has potential.”

Il giovane regista MArTTI HELDE ha vinto plauso internazionale col suo film d’esordio “NEL VEN-TO DI TrAVErSO” (2013), che proprio di recente ha vinto il Premio al Miglior regista nella 5a edizione del Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Pechino.

Il successo più notevole fino adesso, il candi-dato al Premio Oscar al Miglior Film Straniero nel 2015 e al Premio Golden Globe insieme a tanti altri, la coproduzione estone-georgiano “MAN-DArINI” ha avuto un successo eccezionale in festival internazionali. E questo dramma pacifista sta per arrivare ai grandi schermi dell’Europe.

“PrIMAVErA”, il film horror-romanzo prodotto da AArON MOOrHEAD e JUSTIN BENSON, ha guadagnato popolarità soprattutto nel mercato statunitense. Gli effetti visivi del film sono stati prodotti in Estonia da FrostFX. Il film parla d’un giovane uomo in un avvitamento personale chi fugge gli Stati Uniti per l’Italia dove inizia una storia d’amore con una ragazza chi nasconde un secreto oscuro.

iNduSTriA ciNEmATO-GrAFicA iN crESciTA

Tra molti dei nuovi documentari veramente buoni, “FOrMICAIO” da VLADIMIr LOGINOV e MAX GOLOMIDOV è già un fenomeno, un ritratto d’un garage gigante situato nell’area più grande dei palazzi sovietici di Tallinn.

Nel 2007 “BALLO D’AUTUNNO” (Sügisball) del regista VEIKO ÕUNPUU ha vinto il Premio Oriz-zonti nella Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinema-tografica, il primo riconoscimento internazionale importante che un film estone aveva ricevuto.

vEikO ÕUnPUU: “Anche io non so esattamente di che tratta questo film (roukli). Certamente introduce i temi dell’amore e la guerra e il fatto che, in realtà, nessuno di noi sa che diavolo è quello que ci preoccupa tanto oggi giorno. Que-sto è un segreto, un mistero.”

Parlando della sua patria: “Per me c’è abba-stanza spazio, aria fresca e tranquillità qui. Anche mi piace l’alternarsi delle stagioni, soprattutto il momento quando il breve estate comincia e tutto è in fiore. Per me tale gioia esplosiva per la vita sembra possibile solo dopo un lungo e tedioso inverno, in contrasto. Inoltre, me piace l’autunno perché non ci permette far dimenti-care la morte. Mi piace che gli estoni in generale non sono isterici. Si potrebbe fantasticare che in conseguenza d’un impegno breve e concentra-to di pochi secoli forse potremmo raggiungere diventarci una nazione ecologicamente pulita, zen-buddista dove ogni persona dispone delle massime opportunià per una crescita spirituale e una vita felice e completa. In breve, l’Estonia ha potenziale.”

Although the history of the port of Tallinn dates back thousands of years, the state-owned company Port of Tallinn is relatively young. It was

founded in April 1992. In 1996 Port of Tallinn became a public limited liability company, whose sole shareholder is the republic of Estonia.

Tallinn Old City Harbour is one of the biggest and busiest passenger harbours in the entire Bal-tic region, currently processing ro-ro cargo car-ried by passenger liners and ro-ro vessels. Apart from the Old City Harbour the company operates four additional ports across Estonia.

In terms of number of travellers, Tallinn`s Old City Harbour ranks third in the region, after Copenhagen and St. Petersburg. As Estonia`s largest tourist gateway, it is estimated that the port serves approximately 70% of tourists who visit Estonia. This means some 10 million travel-

lers a year. The Old City Harbour is the homeport of Tallink, the leading provider of high-quality mini-cruise and passenger transport services in the northern Baltic Sea region.

The harbour is located in the heart of Tallinn, within walking distance from its charming, me-dieval Old Town and everything a traveller might need. Tallinn’s Old Town is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With its numerous impec-cably restored buildings, the medieval centre of Tallinn is said to be the most beautiful and attrac-tive city centre in the Baltic countries.

Port of Tallinn is a founding member of the Estonian Association for Environmental Manage-ment, a member of the prestigious European inter-port environmental protection organization EcoPorts, and a supporting member of the C40 World Ports Climate Declaration initiative.

Il porto della Città Vecchia di Tallinn è uno degli scali passeggeri più grandi del Baltico, e al momento ormeggia sia traghetti ro-ro, operate dalle compagnie passeggeri, sia carghi ro-ro. La stessa compagnia gestisce altri quattro porti in Estonia oltre a quello della Città Vecchia.

Il porto della Città Vecchia di Tallinn è terzo nell’area per numero di passeggeri, dopo Cope-naghen e San Pietroburgo. Inoltre, il porto è il canale d’ingresso principale dei turisti in arrivo, e si stima che serva circa il 70% dei visitatori che

entrano in Estonia: ossia dieci milioni di perso-ne l’anno. Il porto della Città Vecchia è anche il quartier generale di Tallink, società che offre minicrociere di qualità e servizi di trasporto pas-seggeri verso la regione baltica del Mar del Nord.

Il porto si trova nel cuore di Tallinn, a pochi passi dalla medievale Citta Vecchia e da tutto quello che possa servire ai viaggiatori. La Città Vecchia è iscritta come patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO, e con i suoi molti edifici perfetta-mente restaurati, si dice che il centro di Tallinn non abbia eguali tra tutte le città dell’area baltica.

To keep up with Estonian art scene, one can visit galleries, but in the capital, it is well worth spending time at the acclaimed centre for modern art, Kumu, and the Contemporary Art

Museum (EKKM). At the moment, Estonian artists are earning their laurels: Jaanus Samma, who is participating in the Venice Biennial, and Kris Lemsalu, who performed at the Frieze in New York, wiht the help of Estonia`s most internatio-nally active gallery, Temnikova&Kasela.

KrIS LEMSALU says that this stage of her life, her clothing is her home, not a physical place. No-madic life is not something she has one hundred percent accepted, but she does not feel ready to choose a permanent place to live and found her own studio. When asked about her future, the young artist replies, „I will either be dead, or I will be living in a big house.“

Per essere aggiornati sulla scena artistica estone è possibile visitare le gallerie d’arte, ma nella capitale è soprattutto consigliabile visitare il centro per l’arte moderna KUMU,

o l’EKKM, il museo d’arte contemporanea. Al momento i migliori artisti estoni, con l’aiuto della galleria estone più attiva sulla scena internazio-nale, la Temnikova&Kasela, stanno raccoglien-do onori all’estero, come Jaanus Samma alla Biennale di Venezia, e Kris Lemsalu alla Frieze di New York.

ViTa breVisKrIS LEMSALU afferma che a questo stadio della sua vita, la sua casa sono i vestiti più che un luogo fisico. La vita nomade non è qualcosa che ha accettato al cento percento, ma non si sente ancora pronta a scegliere un luogo dove vivere permanentemente e fondare il suo studio. Se gli si chiede del suo futuro, la giovane artista risponde: “Vivrò in una grande casa, oppure sarò morta”.
