ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) è la tecnica di trasporto scelta (nel 1987 e caratterizzata nelle sue parti principali nel 1990) da ITU-T per le reti B-ISDN (Broadband - Integrated Services Digital Network).
Sebbene ATM sia uno standard ITU-T, esisteva un grosso consorzio di aziende detto ATM-Forum, nato con lo scopo di accelerare il processo di standardizzazione di ATM. Nel 2004, l’ATM Forum si è riunito con MPLS & Frame Relay Alliance nel MFA Forum, divenuto nel 2007 IP/MPLS Forum.

La PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) è una gerarchia di multiplexing di tipo “quasi sincrono”
Il “quasi sincrono” implica il supporre che i flussi in ingresso da multiplare non abbiano esattamente la stessa velocità, e che, quindi, ogni tanto sia necessario inserire nel flusso di uscita dei bit che non fanno parte del messaggio, ma servono da “stuffing”.

E` stata definita in modo parallelo, ma non compatibile, in Europa e negli USA, storicamente per radunare in flussi di sempre maggior dimensioni le comunicazioni vocali digitalizzate a 64 kbit/s.
Uno dei suoi limiti più evidenti è costituito dal fatto che non è possibile estrarre o inserire flussi che distino più di un gradino nella gerarchia.

SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) è una gerarchia di multiplexing sincrona
E’ stata definita nelle raccomandazioni G.707, G.708 e G.709 del ITU-T nel 1989
Una delle ragioni per cui è stata definita è che permette l’estrazione e l’inserimento di flussi in e da qualunque livello della gerarchia.
