PRESENT AND FUTURE CHALLENGES IN SEVERE RETINAL DISEASESCan we move beyond present-day limitations?

From extreme vitreoretinal surgery to artificial vision: a view toward innovative drugs, gene therapy and retinal stem cells.

Dear Colleagues,

I take great pleasure in inviting you to attend our

congress on “Present and Future Challenges in Severe

Retinal Diseases” to be held in Verona, Italy on February

4 and 5, 2011.

As ophthalmologists, we are living in a very exciting

but challenging time. The treatment of ocular

diseases has advanced greatly over the past few

decades, with patients often well informed about the

pathologies they suffer from and the therapeutic options

available. As a result, many patients can barely accept

that there are still diseases that we are unable to treat.

We need to be able to answer questions like:

“Isn’t there someone in the world who can help me?”;

“Can stem cells be helpful in treating my disease?

“When will they be available?”

“What about gene therapy for my retinitis pigmentosa?”

“Where can I go to get an artificial retina?”

The aim of this meeting is to improve our expertise in

the diagnosis and treatment of severe retinal diseases

and to gain insights into the many therapeutic options

that are expected to be available in the near future.

With this goal in mind, my staff and I are looking forward

to welcoming you to the romantic city of Romeo and Juliet.
